Obama dip scares House Dems: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

Sen. Barack Obama's decline in the national polls following Sen. John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate evidently has scared House Democrats who apparently had already started to allow themselves to think about what having a Democrat in the White House would do for their agenda.

The Hill newspaper reports:

Democrats say they grew a little complacent over the summer, buoyed by Obama's glowing media coverage and his lead in the polls.

That has changed since Palin's emergence, which has energized the Republican base and McCain's campaign.

"There is concern," said Rep. Ed Pastor (D-Ariz.). "We were feeling a little laid-back, and now we're saying, 'Oh hell, this is slipping away, we've got to get to work.' "

Not sure how the Democrats could have allowed themselves to get complacent. Had they not heard of the Bradley Effect? Did they not remember how much trouble Obama had winning over lower income whites in the states like Ohio and Pennsylvania which just happen to be two of the battleground states that may decide the election?

This race was always going to be difficult for Obama and not just because of his skin color. His newness to national politics and his relative short resume on national security and foreign affairs were always going to be challenges for candidacy, not insurmountable but there nonetheless.

And that was before he alienated many Hillary Clinton supporters by not choosing her as his running mate, which opened up the door for McCain to put a woman on his ticket.

What's more, most of the national polls that showed Obama leading into the conventions had the race close, within the margin of error or not far outside it. (Did I mention the Bradley Effect already?)

So there wasn't really a lot of grounds for complacency on the Democrats' part. But wishful thinking is part of human nature, even with supposedly hardened professional politicians, apparently.

The Hill story indicates that there's a certain level of obsession with the race on Capitol Hill and that Democrats are split. Should the Obama campaign attack Palin or hope she self-destructs and continue to hit McCain on the issues?

"That's all people have talked about since we got back," said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat who represents Missouri, a projected battleground state. "I received a phone call from an Obama fundraiser who said we're going to have to go back and revisit the strategy."

Since Palin made her national political debut last week, Obama's campaign and other Democrats have been slow to criticize Palin, preferring to let mainstream news outlets and liberal blogs raise questions about her record.

But Democrats are growing concerned that Obama's campaign has not challenged Palin's lack of experience and views on abortion, creationism and the Iraq war more aggressively.

"There's anxiety developing because of a perceived lack of aggressiveness," said Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), an early Obama supporter. "There's natural anxiety when one feels they're behind."

Democrats say that Obama's campaign should get tougher on Palin and challenge her opposition to the right to abortion in cases of rape or incest, her support for teaching creationism in schools and her characterization of the Iraq war as a "task that is from God."

Republicans have tried to paint critics of Palin as bullies. Last week, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) accused The New York Times of "trying their best to drag her down."

But some Democrats say that Obama's campaign cannot let itself be cowed.

"They have to be careful of being defensive," said Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.). "The best defense is a good offense. She's probably the least qualified person ever to be picked for vice president."

Moran makes a good point about Democrats not being too much on the defense. After their unsuccessful presidential campaigns, and there've been many, Democrats are usually the ones asking themselves why their candidate wasn't tougher, why didn't their candidate hit back harder? Republicans never seem to have to ask themselves such questions.

That's because they tend not to be complacent when it comes to the White House. They keep their eyes on the prize. They know you can't govern if you don't win. So winning, like Vince Lombardi would say, is the only thing.

Maybe now the SURROGATES will start being more active and not let all the work be left to Obama/Biden alone!

Come on SURROGATES, move your $ss a bit more effectively, please!

Obama needs to show independence by standing up for workers' right to vote privately in quicker unionization elections instead of being subjected to intimidating card-signing campaigns under the Employee-Free Choice Act - which is opposed by Sen. George McGovern and other defenders of individual choice and democratic values.

Our society is becoming one of that reflecting the movie titled Idiocracy.

The Republican party has become an organization that can only gain influence by attacking or playing into the fears of individuals that cannot pick up a book and read.

I know that McCain will probably win this election... and all those "non-educated white male voters" will still be loosing their jobs and blaming others, while failing to see that their own party is the one ripping the moral fibers of America

lipstick on a pig comment: is that offensive enough?

Interesting Rep. Moran's comment "She's probably the least qualified person ever to be picked for vice president". One could apply the same logic to Senator Obama. He's probably the least qualified person ever to be picked for president!

Yes, it is a high time that the Obama camp wakes up. They should not wait for the media to do the work for them. They need to be aggressive and challenge Palin on all fronts. Their campaign is spreading lies about Obama, and using change as their new slogan. They want to make Palin untouchable with excuse of sexism. Bridge to nowhere story is a lie as we now know the truth about it. The plane sold on Ebay? is also not true, and worst of all, McCain said it sold for a profit. Obama should continue to talk about the issues at large on tax cut for the middle class, education, and the economy at large, and also attacking the credibilty of Palin. He should stop giving any credit to Palin because he wants to be considered fare. Lipstick or not lipstick, don't hold back for later day delivery, do it now Obama, start today.

Obama, I believe, has had a personal sense of entitlement to the White House, and once Hillary was out of the way, thought he'd move right in.

I'm glad John McCain is proving to him that he's going to have to work for the job he desires.

No more handouts to those who feel entitled!

Obama should ignore Palin but he can't do it until you guys quit asking him about her and playing into the myth machine the Republicans' started cranking up at their convention. No big surprise they've kept her cloistered from the press to allow them ample time to promote her ridiculous new persona in the eyes of voters. McCain and his boys are playing you guys like a piano.

If you still don't get the LIPSTICK ON A PIG jab, here's one of Obama doing it to Hillary in the Primary.

Notice on the slow motion what the women sitting behind Obama are saying (and doing). Watch as they REACT to figuring out what he did, and how they start laughing when they get the joke.

Obama obviously has a weird hangup with us women. I couldn't imagine doing this in a million years!

Mr. James asks:

Should the Obama campaign attack Palin or hope she self-destructs and continue to hit McCain on the issues?

Well, we know the answer to that question didn't take but a milisecond! Smear full steam ahead!

Is this supposed to be Mr. Cleavers comment, "Since Palin made her national political debut last week, Obama's campaign and other Democrats have been slow to criticize Palin, preferring to let mainstream news outlets and liberal blogs raise questions about her record."

Give us a break Mr. James, please! the mainstream media such as you call yourself, are in the Obama campaign's bag of tricks. To repeat the statement above, Democrats say they grew a little complacent over the summer, buoyed by Obama's glowing media coverage and his lead in the polls. "Glowing media coverage". Se. Obama's campaign has been one of celebrity - rock star - chosen one - complete with fawning media in tow.

Mainstream media as well as the liberal blogs are attacking with smear, fear and outright lies. The 30 lawyers sent to Alaska to dig up anything they can on Gov, Palin by the Obama campaign is proof of the campaigns fear of Gov. Palin and the media is in lockstep with the smear campaign.

What the Obama campaign will fear more than Gov. Palin will be the unveiling of the true Barak Obama to the nation. It won't take 30 lawyers to unmask the corruption laden Chicago-Obama machines tactics, the direct associations with racists, terrorists, anti-American fudnraisers, mentors and close freinds. Theses truths have already been revealed, unfortunately the fawning media ignores these truths and/or buries the information about the true Obama on the back page next to the legal notices.

Why would the Democrats begin doing anything now, they haven't done a thing for 2 years - what's their approval rating now 18%? They got to get Obama in there or they may be out of their cushy seats next.

Why do the Democrats think that attacking Palin on creationism and abortion will chip away at support for her? Are they not aware how many people in this country more or less hold beliefs similar to hers? Probably not, which is why they keep imploding in national elections. You can't keep telling people that they are stupid for not voting with their economic interests in mind while you simultaneously denegrate visceral beliefs.

Do any of you rememebr when Obama used sexist remarks to Hillary in the primaries??

How about when he said "You're likable enough Hillary" like she was some useless female in need of his reassurances.

Obama is the chauvenist pig here, not Palin.

Will the real Obama please standup.

After seeing him on Fox he doesn't have a clue, get hiom off his stump speech and ask him to explain the how to he falters.

Dems aren't scared they need to do more and register these unregistered voters and get them to the polls.

The media needs to do their jobs better and really address who Sarah is and stop running scared because of the sexist ploy that the Republicans have brainwashed everyone with. if the media presents the truths about Palin there would be an issue of whether Omama should even acknowldge her. She is the golden child for the moment.

Oh, please. After eight years of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove, does anyone think America will elect a GOP ticket in 2008? Dems should stop fretting.....

Obama made the same mistake Hillary did. She thought the primary was nothing more than a coronation for her inevitable election. Obama thought the same thing until the RNC.

Both have demonstrated outstanding arrogance and lack of judgment. Both got caught completely off-guard and were put into scramble mode. Both significantly underestimated their opponent.

All characteristics of great leadership...right?

Despite protests from Obama and the MSM, he won't persuade ordinary Americans who instantly recognized Obama's attack as directed at Palin, and who know he has a record of such junior high trash talk antics such as cleverly smirking while he gave Hillary the finger to a cheering crowd following his primary loss in Pennsylvnia. Even more amazing is that Obama campaign has been floundering and off-message since the Palin announcement 12 days ago and counting.
-- Obama hasn’t had a “good communicator” day since his acceptance speech. Tell me where he’s looked or sounded Presidential? He keeps comparing himself and his record to his opponent’s VP pick – thereby diminishing himself as POTUS. He’s looking elitist again, with the small town mayor attack. A “fighter for families” and his campaign attacks a woman’s family (with teen pregnancy and a Downs baby) – not good. They’ve now gone negative big-time. That “pig” statement is going to hurt him. And it may hurt him with those Hillary supporters and feminist groups who have bit their tongues up until now. Obama is utterly lost. And this is just the campaign. Imagine how this rank novice would handle the pressures of the White House. No thanks, Obama. We're not buying.

Come on, boys and girls, of the Bush-McCain Republicans, an election means, discussing the issues, not character assassinate. Let's leave that to the cartoonists !! Let's discuss the Banking Mortgage Scandal, that will make the S&L Scandal, look like a piggy-bank theft or make the Enron Scandal look like a typo !! If you Republicans don't want to discuss those issues, how about the slaughter In the Oil Fields of Iraq !!! Can you discuss that disaster, without name-calling, or distorting anybody' record or statements ?!! I hope so, but I doubt it !! Here, are just a few issues that the Bush-McCain Republicans could discuss, as reasoning adults, but refuse to. They want to talk about lipstick and pigs, pit-bulls and bridges to nowhere. Well, America if you want this incompetent pair as President and Vice-President, vote for them !! We survived the Bush-Cheney Regime and their 8 catastrophic years, we will survive four years of the next incompetent Republican ticket, if it is so ordained !!

Fortunately, he has not been picked for president, and hopefully, he will not be.

He is an inexperienced, empty suit.

These heroic house dems just caved on drilling, too. Bravely ran away, away. Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin!

If Sarah Palin, that "small town mayor" from Alaska can rattle Obama, how does he think he'll deal with Iran's Ahmadinejad?!!!

The job of the U.S. Presidency is WAY TOO BIG for someone who is as inexperienced and easily thrown as Obama.

". . . . . , Obama's campaign and other Democrats have been slow to criticize Palin, preferring to let mainstream news outlets and liberal blogs raise questions about her record"

What a joke the aforementioned is! Obama is as guilty as the rest in his crooked infested background! Had he let the personal attack against Palin alone and encouraged his liberal news media so-called suck ups, he would still be ahead in the polls! I have never witnessed such filty dirty ascinine personal attacks against a candidate in all the years I have been voting. Get to the real issues and let the people decide, who are not as stupid as the media and most politicians think!

And we wonder why our kids turn out the way they do when they witness first hand such immaturity in our politicians and other leaders--not to mention the stupitiy of Hollywood! No wonder we have shootings in our schools and bullies to our kids---the democrats certainly have taught them a few things during this election!

If Democrats really grew complacent over the summer, they need to be scared. Elections cannot be taken for granted. Anybody coasting should instead be making the case that there is not a dime's worth of difference between a McCain Presidency and a third Bush term.

McCain & Palin will call themselves "mavericks" who will reform Washington. Really, they're Republicans, who are responsible for the last 8 years.

Americans won't let McCain & Palin put lipstick on a pig.

Oh, please. After eight years of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove, does anyone think America will elect a GOP ticket in 2008? Dems should stop fretting.....

I thought the same yet judging by some of the commentors on this board, it is sadly, quite possible.

I thought it was unthinkable that a Bush-Cheney ticket was electable. Look at how wrong I was, though not half as wrong as all of those Bush-Cheney supporters, turned out to be !! With the most negative ratings ever, please blame it on the media, the Bush-Cheney Regime has disappointed a lot of their supporters, yet, they choose to re-elect them when they vote for the incompetent ticket, of McCain-Palin !! Is there a psychiatrist in the house !!? Our electorate is in dire need of an examination !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Dead even in the polls or McCain slightly (1-4%) ahead is hardly a slam dunk for either side. The polls have margins of error larger than McCain's slim advantage at the moment. It is interesting how the Republican strategy of attacks on their opponent vs. discussing the issues is having some traction at the moment. Will voters continue to embrace the celebrity status of Palin. I suspect the Palin bounce will continue to fire up the previous moribund Republican base which would have voted McCain voting with a lot less enthusiasm . It's doubtful that Palin or McCain will ultimately win over any independent voters whose economic futures are in jeopardy as they look for solutions from candidates instead of rancorous attacks and folksy one-liners.

I love the smell of lib panic in the morning. It smells like victory.

It's "beliefs" that have been pimped by the GOP. Do you feel that GWBush has protected your God or your Jesus? Are you better off than you were 8 years ago? Do you realize that the GOP uses this "belief" to manipulate you and rake in tons of $$$ for themselves and their friends, all the while not giving 1 cent about your God or your Jesus? It's so painful to watch the middle-class get squeezed and yet they stand there and take it because somewhere in the pscyhe of the complacent is the "belief" that if someone tells you something in reference to God, you can take their word for it. Unreal! Do you really not learn the lessons from Ted Haggard, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Baker....on and on. It's ridiculous. Better yet, the mindset is to point at "radical Islam" all the while ignoring how "radical" the mirror actually reflects. Blaming Sunni and Shia for not welcoming us with open arms? When you try to have a discussion with factual information, such as the US ranks 36th in healthcare in Industrialied nations, the US has fallen behind in techology and education, the "religion" always blankets any of the discussion. The problem with the whole religion discussion is that it's unprovable, and relies soley on faith. Last I checked, faith didn't stop Katrina, didn't stop the war in Iraq, didn't keep the deficit from growing, and hasn't dropped any more tablets with rules from the sky. Fact, my bills have gone up over 100% in the last 8 years between gas and electric. My God and my Jesus haven't cut me a check, or tapped me on the shoulder with any ideas on how to alleviate this.

Obama is finshed unless he can find a race card to use like he did on the Clintons-

Tora! tora! tora!

If Democrats haven't figured out that now is the time for a full out unrelenting attack on Bush and the Republicans, they must want to go back to minority status.

So much corruption. So much incompetence. So little time.

If you have any jugular instincts, now is the time to let them out.

Obama's campaign was over the day he picked Joe Biden as his VP. Obama, intoxicated by his poll numbers, did not realize that poll numbers can change faster than the weather in Chicago. The second problem that Obama has is his narcissist and arrogant personality. He probably thought that that he could win the race all by himself, and decided to ignore the Hillary's voters. American politics will have a new term: the "Obama Effect": a candidate who thinks that he knows better than his core base.

Barack Obama is suffers from a lack of self knowledge. He is a chameleon. He becomes whatever the moment requires of him. This is the most risky and dangerous leader, especially during wartime.
We don't trust him anymore. He had it, we learned more by watching him and listening to him....and he lost our trust.
Thank God we had the time to see the real Obama. There is no real Obama. He's a fake.
