Obama says he too knows that Alaska sits next to Russia, 'saw it on a map'

"How you campaign foreshadows how you're going to govern,'' Sen. Barack Obama said today, suggesting that the rival campaign of Sen. John McCain is trying to embrace "the change mantra'' while campaigning for office the same old way.

"John McCain has been peddling this story about me increasing taxes,'' Obama said in an interview aired by This Week with George Stephanopoulous on ABC this morning. "My tax plans provide three times the tax relief for middle class families as John McCain's... What I've said is, let's provide tax cuts to 95 percent of the American people.''

Obama was asked if it is wise to be talking about raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans at a time of economic trouble.

"It is wise, if you've got a half a trillion dollar deficit. I think it makes sense for us to pay for what we're purchasing... If we're spending $10 billion a month for the war in Iraq, you can't keep borrowing that on a credit card for the Chinese.''

But he did allow that any tax increases may be dependent on the shape of the economy at the time: "I think we've got to take a look and see where the economy is,'' Obama said.

The Democratic nominee was asked about McCain's running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska - and suggested she will be able to speak for herself "if she ends up answering an invitation to your show,'' a shot at the fact that Palin was missing from today's Sunday morning news show lineup.

"She is a skilled politician,'' Obama said of Palin. "Here's what I'll say, if he tells me that he chose somebody who may be even more aligned with George Bush or Dick Cheney or the politics we've seen over the last eight years... the most important thing from my perspective are what are the policies that John McCain and his vice president intend to pursue... What I didn't hear (from the GOP's convention) is... how are they going to put people back to work... how are they going to make health care available... how are they going to make college more affordable.''

On McCain maintaining that Palin has more national security experience than Obama has because Palin runs the Alaska National Guard: "I actually knew that Russia was next to Alaska as well,'' Obama said. "I saw it on a map.''

"This whole resume contest that is going back and forth is not what America has been looking for.''

On the Republicans ridiculing Obama's experience as a community organizer, as they did at their convention last week:

"It's a real puzzling thing,'' Obama said. "Understand what I did as a community organizer. When I got out of college as a young person 24, 25 years old... I went to Chicago and worked with churches... to set up job training programs for the unemployed... and try to deal with asbestos in homes for the poor.

"John McCain has been talking about putting 'country first,''' Obama said. "That's what I did, at the ages of 24 and 25 before going to law school... It's curious to me that they would mock that, when I think that that's exactly what young people should do.''

"For folks who have tried to grab the change mantra,'' Obama said, "they've got a very traditional view of what community service should be... it's running for office.''

On military service, which was touted by McCain at his convention and which Obama lacks: "I always thought the military was a noble.., option... When I came of age in 1979, the Vietnam war already had come to an end, we were not engaged in any '' military action. "It's an option I decided not to pursue.''

Obama also agreed that his comment at the Saddleback church forum with McCain - that answering the question of whether life begins at conception was "above my pay grade'' - was probably too flip. "I don't presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological answers,'' Obama said on This Week. "What I know is that abortion is a moral issue. It's an issue that families struggle with all the time.''

So, as a community organizer, how many jobs did he help create? Obama was the one who has pointed out from the first of the campaign that he was a "community organizer", pushed it at every opportunity on the trail. Senator Obama planted himself in the south side of Chicago where his community organizing allowed him access to people in politics that he never would have gotten to otherwise and create a base of voters. He's is the one who has pushed the fact of community organizing makes him more qualified, I'm just not buying it. If he's so concerned about the south side of Chicago, why move out?

Sure, Obama believes a resume' is not important...since he doesn't have one.
He wants to be chief executive of the nation, yet he's never even managed a McDonald's. He wants to be commander in chief of the military, yet he wouldn't even qualify to be a corporal. The thinnest book in the world? A list of Obama's achivements in the real world outside of politics.

I am so impressed! Obama knows that Russia is next to Alaska "because I saw it on a map." Golly, gee. And he doesn't know when life begins but he does know enough to vote three times against a bill that would prevent killing a live baby born during an abortion. Seems there are a whole lot of things Obama doesn't know...including how to run a country.

Smart, funny, and tells it like it is. I cannot wait until Obama is our President.

Why anyone would want "four more years, only worse" is beyond me. What country have the Republicans been living in? Oh yeah. The one where the Alaskan National Guard is our first line of defense, and taking our country from record surpluses to record deficits is "small government."

I'm glad he knows that Russia is next to the 59th state, or was it the 57th state?

Obama started the "resume contest" by attacking Palin initially. But he lost that battle. More bad judgment from Obama. I’m much, much more concerned about Obama’s profound and dangerous lack of experience at the TOP of the ticket than I am about the supposed lack of experience at the bottom of the McCain ticket. Further evidence of Obama’s paper thin resume is the fact that he is actually trying to convince Americans that his presidential campaign has given him “executive experience.” Obama hasn’t as much as managed a Kool-Aid stand in the front yard. My God.

What a childish game it is to question Obama's long ago role as a community organizer without acknowledging his terms in the state legislature or his term as a senator from Illinois. This country is facing some very serious issues with the economy, energy, healthcare and the threat of terrorism, yet so many on the right want to reduce this election to questions about what Obama did in his distant past as a community organizer. How foolish.

Because Obama doesn't have a resume!

I agree with George Will at the Washington Post. Senator Obama is the least experienced presidential candidate in 75 years.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR2008090202441.html

Oddly, none of the news networks, almost all of which are in his pocket, have mentioned this.

So, what he's saying is, the qualifications to be President are irrelevant (since a resume is an accounting of your qualifications). Hmmm. By his measure, any idiot with a pulse is qualified to be President of the US. Shows you just how little regard he has for the office he ambitiously seeks.

Do people forget that Sarah Palin has only been governor for as long as Obama has been campaigning? Do people forget that the race isn't between Palin and Obama, it's between McCain and Obama? Do people forget that the housing crisis is the worst it's been since the great depression and the only way we got out of that was a a socialist democrat named Franklin D. Roosevelt? No one complained then... no one is going to complain when Obama gets us out of a recession. And I still don't understand how abortion is a political issue... If Republicans don't want the government to tell the American people to pay taxes, they shouldn't have the government tell the American people how to raise a family.

Can we get another in depth story on Obama?

Is there room left in the paper?

I'm sticking with Hillary and scrappy Joe, Obama is not qualified.

Sophia is wrong. The U.S. did not get out of the Depression because of the socialist policies of FDR. In 1940, unemployment stood at 15 percent! It was World War Two that took America out of the Depression. Economists said at the time that Roosevelt's policies actually delayed America's emergence from the Depression, long after European countries which followed free market philosophies did. History's
always tough when it contradicts
falsehoods, right?

So, as a community organizer, how many jobs did he help create?
Posted by: vla | September 7, 2008 11:31 AM

Probably as many as McCain did in his 80 years in the Senate.

But I'll give you this: Sarah Palin's earmarks probably creaated more jobs than BOTH McCain and Obama.

Hmmm... interesting how that works. Government money creating jobs.... Hmmmm... interesting concept. And yet the conservatives are RAILING against government spending.

Duh! Where do you think the SPENDING is FOR? And where do you expect the government to get money other than TAXES? You can only borrow from the Chinese and Arabs so much.

Obama has lied about his credentials from the onset of the presidential campaign.

First, his book states he came to Chicago in 1985, after graduation from college. This is when he spent 3 years organizing the voter’s registration rally. (I did not think this is a paid position). I help to organize people to vote and I am not paid for it. Then he left Chicago and went on to Harvard law school in 1988. Then, in 1988, he met Michelle while an intern. Yet, she even contradicted this because she said when she met him he was doing voters registration. That was three years before he met her.

Then, in 1991 after graduating Harvard law School, he returned to Chicago, and did what??? More voters’ registration??? Then working at a law firm a very short while, and did an adjunct professor role and getting married. Then in 1995, he ran for Illinois State Senate, and in 2004, U.S. Senate.

SO when did Obama ever work?

George Bush was governor of a very large state and had lots of experienced, a lot good that did us. The experience argument on both sides is irrelevant. If you're inexperienced but smart, have sound judgment and surround yourself with smart, experienced people, you can be an effective president. If you're very experienced, but are dumb, have poor judgment and surround yourself by idiots, you'll be a bad president.

As for Palin, if she were a man, McCain would have never, ever picked the governor of Alaska as his running mate. He's completely pandering to the Clinton supporters. If you don't think that's the case, you're so unbelievably dumb. I'm no bleeding heart liberal and actually like John McCain, but the political bs he's pulling right now is pathetic.

What is McCain executive experience? He has been a legislator most of his adult life. What business, city or state did he run. My husband did 20 years in the military and that don't make him qualified to be president of the USA. All these fake arguments. Besides a gun tootin white woman what you think that would do to our foreign policy standing in the world. She looks like George with a cowboy hat. That is not sexism that is realism.

Is he serious? How can you say your resume is irrevelant? So your saying when you go to apply for a job that you resume doesn't matter? YEAH RIGHT! This guy really is delusional!

First of all Abortion is a political issue because of Roe vs Wade. Second Obama talks about change yet he picked for his VP someone who has been in the old government for 20 some years. Is that change Obama? The only reason he picked Biden is because he is afraid Hillary would have out shown him as his VP.

It's funny that Sophia mentioned :"Do people forget that Sarah Palin has only been governor for as long as Obama has been campaigning?"

So what does it tell you?

1. Sarah Palin has been working for the people of Alaska ever since she was elected. Barack Obama, on the other hand, has done nothing for the people of Illinois but running for the next job ever since he was elected.

2. Sarah Palin spent the last 2 years practicing her executive skills, managing a budget of $11 billion and 24,000 employees for the state of Alaska while Barack Obama spent the last 2 years running a campaign for himself.

3. Sarah Palin has earned her paychecks from the state of Alaska in the last 2 years while Barack Obama has done nothing for the state of Illinois to earn his paychecks.

Even though this is supposed to be a contest between John McCain and Barack Obama, it's obvious that even the #2 on the Republican ticket is far more experience than the #1 on the Democratic ticket. The choice is pretty clear: McCain-Palin is the most qualified ticket in this contest.

What is John McCain going to do to fix the problems that his miserable party has created over the last eight years?
He has no clue. He had a chance at the convention to lay out his plans but rather thought people did not know he had been a POW.
The only people he cares about are the fat cat lobbyists that run his campaign and the super rich he wants to continue giving tax cuts.
Showing no regards for qualifications and picking Mrs Palin as his running mate shows he does NOT put his country first.

Quippy, as I recall Senator Obama has referenced and stressed his community organizing quite often during the primary to the present time. Perhaps he should have dwelled more on his work in civil rights litigation or being a professor. He was the one who kept throwing that community organizing resume out there for the voters to be impressed with.

Frankly speaking, the media and liberals and Obama idiots are SCARED TO DEATH that Obama (who doesn't even know that there are 50 states not 57 in our nation) is NOT going to win. That is why the only thing they can do is to try to tear down, rip to shredds Palin, her family and now her church. Boy are they ever desperate. Palin could care less. She's tough and strong. This makes the idiots even madder (as in insane). Stick that in your pipe and chew it!

And the meek shall inherit the Earth. I am pretty sure that refers to all the dumb posts found in the comments sections across the Internet. For everyone who still claims to be a Republican, tell me what you are afraid of. The Republican Party has left everything that it had stood for, so that it could become a party of three uncompromising ideas - pro-life, pro-guns, pro-corporate. A conservative used to be about staying with the "tried and true". It used to be about a modest foreign policy. And most of all, it used to be about staying out of other peoples business. Teddy Roosevelt would be a flaming liberal in today's politics. In, my opinion, the current Democratic nominee for President is more conservative than anyone in the Republican Party. Listen and read instead of following what you are being spoon-fed by chain e-mails and the nonsense that comes from the "non-traditional" media.

Since Palin was the one who slapped the face of every American who's ever volunteered to better their own community when she flung that lowly crap at Obama, let's compare what Palin did around the same time: She was a sports reporter (and apparently not very good one; check out youtube).

Again, since Palin shot the insult at community volunteers and organizers, and claimed that she had actual "responsibility" as mayor, let's look at her tenure as mayor. Lo and behold! Palin had to hire a "city administrator" to do that actual work of a mayor of a tiny burg which has an infrastructure so small that it currently has only 500 buildings buildings hooked up to Sewers. She couldn't even handle that job, hence somebody else had to be paid from city coffers to actually "administrate" the Wasilla city government.

What a sham!

Response to Sophia:
Housing Crisis? Is the government suppose to buy everyone a house now? When I moved to FL 3 years ago the prices were too high because of the market so we rented. Is that Bush's fault? FDR did not end the Great Depression, WWII did.

Other news media are reporting Obama's slip in the ABC interview where he referred to "my Muslim faith." The comment stood until George Stephanopolous broke in, saying "you mean your Christian
faith?"

To those that really think Barack was talking geography when he said he knew where Russia was... you should not be allowed to vote. His comment was to show that "foreign policy experience" that was touted by McCain himself consisted of being geographically closer to Russia than the rest of the U.S.

I loved the part when he talked about "my Muslim faith." What a moron.

If you strip the meaning of Obama's "resume contest" statement down, what he means is "at least I know I don't have the experience to be president." Thanks a lot, Hopey.

So, "anotherperspective1", you think 8 years in a state senate constitutes "no work at all", whereas 24 years in the U.S. Senate, (3 times "no work at all") is a lot of work?

Interesting math you've got going there.

And - to paraphrase McCain (I can't remember if this was John or Cindy McCain who said this): "Alaska is the closest state to Russia, and she (Palin) knows that" - was given as justification for her "foreign policy experience" - any idiot can look that up on a map, I think, was Obama's point.

Dianne got it right... if you watched the ABC interview and assumed Obama was mishandling some geography facts.. then you should sit out this election and spare us the tragic chance that Bush might actually be elected again in the form of McCain/Palin.

Experience?

How about a lawyer, eight years as a state legislator and two years as Representative? Would that qualify for the presidency?

If not, then you just disqualified Abraham Lincoln, generally regarded as the best president in all of American history.

Compare that to Obama, and you find Obama has more experience.
