The presidential campaign may not be getting old.
But John McCain is, the way Barack Obama's new TV ad tells it in a ratcheting up of attack-messages for a contest that has grown increasingly combative.
"1982, John McCain goes to Washington," the announcer of a new Obama campaign ad today announces. "Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn't.
""He admits he still doesn't know how to use a computer, can't send an e-mail, still doesn't understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class," says the narrator of an ad picturing McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and McCain with the sitting President Bush at the White House. "After one president who was out of touch, we just can't afford more of the same."
The Obama campaign's Dan Pfeiffer insists the campaign is not taking issue with McCain's age - 72, potentially the oldest man ever to win a first term as president - but rather all that time that McCain has spent in Washington.
"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," Pfeiffer told the Associated Press. ""It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."
But some say Obama has been playing on McCain's age for some time now. Kathleen Hall Jamieson, an expert in political communications, maintains that the Obama campaign has been "priming'' voters on McCain's age in many ways - the term applies to providing salient images that make it easy for people to understand.
"What Sen. Obama is doing, he is raising age in every possible situation they can find,'' Jamieson told the Tribune. "They showed a slowing down of his exchange with President Bush to make him appear to be slowing down, sleepy... and they talked about him not remembering how many houses he has... What that is dowing is 'priming' age.''
Obama's campaign ads have played on the fact that McCain couldn't remember how many homes he owns, when asked by a reporter from Politico - seven, the Obama campaign ad volunteered (though it turned out to be eight). And they have portrayed video of Bush and McCain moving in slow motion.
Then, on Monday, when Obama raised a ruckus with his comment about putting lipstick on a fish, it was the other thing Obama had to say about McCain's "failed policies'' that singled more of that "priming:'' "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," Obama said, and, as laughter erupted: "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, but it's still going to stink after eight years."
The old fish: Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania maintains that Obama's message about McCain is clear.
The new Obama ad, if nothing else, portrays McCain as out-of-touch and out-of date. It arrives as national polls show McCain gaining a modest, but "stable'' advantage over Obama - as the latest Gallup Daily Tracking poll reported this week: a 48-44 percentage point advantage for Obama in three days of surveying.
""Today is the first day of the rest of the campaign," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says in a campaign strategy memo. "We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain's attacks and we will take the fight to him, but we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people."
Not only McCain's computer literacy, but also his fashion sense are mocked in an ad that pictures the senior senator from Arizona in out-of-date clothing.
McCain has said that he relies on his wife and staff to work the computer for him and that he doesn't use e-mail - President Bush also does not use e-mail.
A spokesman for the Republican National Committee, Alex Conant, accuses Obama of "trying to destroy" McCain and running mate Sarah Palin with personal attacks. "This is more evidence that Obama's politics of hope< is just empty words," Conant said in a statement.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fashion sense and computer literacy? Good grief they are certainly desperate in the Democratic party if they think these are big issues. So, we're going from lipstick, pigs, old fish to fashion sense and e-mails. Keep it up Dems, you'll manage to insult every voter in middle America who is not a fashion plate and computer nerd. Here's a tip, older people vote too! There better rethink that out-of-touch thing, I think they are out of touch.

The Republicans call these "personal attacks?" I disagree. The information about tax policy and the lack of McCain's technology skills are relevant and important. McCain's campaign repeatedly lies about Obama's tax policy and misrepresents his own. We need straight talk not McCain's deception. McCain's lack of curiosity and low intelligence ARE important, duh. We don't need any more ah-shucks I would like to have a beer with him kind of guys.
Go get 'em Barrack, and the rest of you Democrats and "journalists" - hold these liars accountable. I want to hear from Hillary.

The Obama campaign has every right to go after McCain - and if their new ads is an "attack"on McCain's age, so be it. At least it's true - McCain is old! The McCain campaign can't have it both ways.
The last ad about "sex education" was vile - it was horrible. They even distorted Obama's face and made his suit appear to be wrinkled as if he was lurking in some playground. IT WAS JUST VILE! No one has to stoop that low in order to win an election. That ad literally turned my stomach. It totally disrespects those poor children who have been victims of child molestation.
For McCain to say that the campaign would have gone in a different direction had Obama agreed to have town hall meetings with him is just bull. In essence, he's saying that Obama should have allowed McCain to run his campaign! GET REAL!!!
McCain deserves everything is gets!!!

An effective ad for John McCain to respond would to point out the hypocrisy that Senator Obama shows on occasion.
The Chicago Sun Times reported this morning that if the Illinois Senate does not meet in the next two weeks then a bill that was vetoed by Governor Blagojevich addressing ethical lapses and stregthen the fight against corrupt practices in Illinois will not become law.
Barack Obama has declined the opportunity to call his mentor, State Senate President Emil Jones, and request that Senator Jones act regarding this veto.
The new media in Illinois has called this legislation vital in addressing corruption in Illinois.
Senator Obama has been critical of ethical lapses and corruption in Washington. I cannot see why he will not act in his home state.
If this is the type of "Change" we will see then we do not need it!

One thing I have learned this election cycle from the Obama campaign and his media friends is that it is forbidden to be prejudiced based on race but attacking people due to their sex and age is 100% A-OK! More change we can beleive in.

John McCain does not put country first; he has always been about putting John McCain first.
His recent ads that he puts his stamp of approval on are out and out lies. His campaign doesn't care because when you lie enough and keep repeating them a percentage of people believe them.
John McCain showed how little he cares about this country when he picked a candidate that may help him win but whose qualifications to be a heartbeat away from the Presidentcy are a joke. John McCain deserves no respect because he shows none.
Obama is a class act; McCain is a Rovian puppet.

There is plenty of material to go after McCain. After all of the poo that has been thrown daily at Obama, it is good to see him take a more aggressive stance. If this election is about McCain-Palin, they will lose. If the McCain-Palin campaign can successfully dominate the news cycles by being on the offensive against Obama-Biden (and staying out of the media's glare themselves), then they have a chance.

I don't think it will work. There are a lot of computer illiterate people out there who do not understand how computer illiteracy relates to the Presidency, much less how it is "out of touch." It is out of touch and in today's world it is important to understand computers and the Internet, but all too many people don't get that; and, many of those who do not understand computers may object to what they will consider being called "out of touch."

It is very unfortunate that political ads have to turn negative at this point of campaigning. What can you do when these tactics of political ads are already so entrenched with what works?
Posted by: Sleep | September 12, 2008 11:03 AM
There are a lot of individuals out there with their. Opinion about Obama. But in all actuallity they are scared to have an african american man lead this country, so they sit there and toy with the idea that McCain and palin really can change this country. But you are missing the fact that McCain supported Bush and now Bush supports McCain and palin is an idiot because she is already considering going to war with Russia. If McCain and palin were to take office this country is ddomed. Like matt damon said "its a like a really bad disney movie". So if you think McCain is referring to change in our country you are wrong. The only chang he is going to bring about is the fact that there will be a white man and a white woman in office instead of two white men.so don't let the world of politics confuse by a simple word.
McCain doesn't have a plan he is only hoping that the same thing happens to him that happened to Bush that he slips into office. And he is basing his theory on race and this "maverick" thing. Just listen to his acceptance speech he didn't say ANYTHING AT ALL!!!

Obama is what? Did you mean to spell the word "desperate?" No wonder the republicans buy into this garbage, they don't know any better.

Obama is certainly dapper and can talk like a used car salesman, but isn't qualified to be POTUS.
McCain can buy a new suit, Obama can't buy experience.

Ripping on Senator McCain for his unfamiliarity with sending email is as foolish as ripping on JFK for not knowing how to type (he didn't). And it's as childish as a pre-teen ripping on her parents for not being as web-savvy as she is. The easy response is, "I may not have my own Facebook page, dear, but I'm still your daddy."
The Obama ad shows that the Obama Campaign is running out of ideas.

If a candidate says ANYTHING that is negative but true, it should be fair game. Negative things that are lies get on my nerves. What Obama says about McCain being a technological dinosaur is true as well as important. We live in a hi-tech world, and our leader needs to be knowledgeable in that area. Just like I want my doctor to stay abreast of the latest medical tecniques, I want my president to stay abreast of hi-tech advances.
If McCain's people think his age should not be an issue, they're wrong because he is approaching the average age of death in this country. I've heard people say that race and age should both be off the table. WRONG! Race affects absolutely nothing unless you're a racist. Age affects many things...........and I should know because I'm no spring chicken myself!!!!
Posted by: Viv | September 12, 2008 11:28 AM
Is it really so hard for so many to imagine what it would be like to have a President that is inquisitive? I for one would love to have our leader be a person who meets the challenges of a changing world and has the sense to stay on top of new and emerging technologies. That so many people consider that to be a fault instead of an asset says a lot about the voting public. I am very afraid for our country.
Posted by: Barb | September 12, 2008 11:41 AM
Computer literacy is important -- would you hire someone who didn't know how to use a computer?
And it has nothing to do with age. My parents are both 70, and they've had e-mail accounts for almost a decade. They had to use computers at their jobs before they retired. Apparently John McCain has "people" to do that for him.
It's the 21st Century. The president should know how to use a computer and understand how important computers are to the economy. It's not too much to ask.
Posted by: amy | September 12, 2008 11:43 AM
So wait-- the GOP chooses to ignore the clear message they're trying to send through the video (McCain is part of the Washington machine and is in bed with Dubya-- that's a figure of speech by the way), but rather that... it's a schoolyard taunt about his age?
Seriously, when did they stop ignoring the obvious attack and start making up others?
Posted by: Captain Obvious | September 12, 2008 11:46 AM
Ugh - I'm a fan of Dems, but honestly, this ad is the last straw. It's moronic to assume that someone has to be savvy with MS Outlook to be a decision-maker, and is a complete slap in the face to older Americans. Naturally, some people will whine that anyone who doesn't vote for Obama is a racist, but honestly, I'm a young guy who works in the tech field, and this ad makes him look like nothing more than a self-absorbed jerk.
Posted by: Joe | September 12, 2008 11:48 AM
Senator Obama was afraid to be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly for 9 months. His excuse was he was too busy. This person who tells Americans he can face down Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but he's too afraid to be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly ? He granted an interview only after he dipped in the polls below McCain (no doubt he's really sweating his drops in MI and PA). This person refused to be interviewed by the only network that's not acting like the media arm of his own campaign. (Notice the anchor shuffle NBC did this week in reaction to outcry over strong bias by Chris Matthews and Ken Oldbermann.)
So we've got someone too old running for president against someone too afraid to grant an interview to Bill O'Reilly.
Good luck when Russian tanks roll into Tblisi and NATO is paralyzed (even after Georgia joins NATO) since Russia supplies western Europe with most of its natural gas and oil. We're in good shape with the man afraid of Bill O'Reilly

Unfortunately, there are so many Americans that are uneducated on where each candidate stands on the important issues. The McCain and Obama campaigns know this and that is why they are tailoring their ads to simplify their rival to a few issues. Yeah, McCain is old and yes, Obama has nothing to enforce his "Change" platform. It's unfortunate that a lot of votes are going to come from these two points.
Posted by: GRD | September 12, 2008 11:50 AM
Amazing the media have no problem with Obama pointing out that McCain is "old," considering that age discrimination is illegal. But what if someone were to point out another form of discrimination that is illegal, that Obama is black? The hue and cry would be echoing everywhere. Where, oh where is the media outrage over Obama's age discrimination tactics? The same place their biases reside.
Posted by: Derrick | September 12, 2008 11:51 AM
Yes, McCain has asked Obama to meet at McCain's meeting choices where McCain decides who the small group of his choice of the town hall meeting -providing tickets to only those of HIS choice. Obama would have NO input into the time, place, location, or who is present - nor could he be able to designate people of Obama's choice.
Obama on the other hand has requested McCain to debate on THREE occasions with an open forum. McCain has refused those engagements.
Do you see McCain's smoke and mirrors campaign here?

This is the old vicious politics Obama promised he would not use. The lipstick statement was not positive, so the McCain campaign hit back where it hurts. The more Obama attacks the more he hurts himself with independent voters.

There's no excuse for being stuck in the 1980's. If you don't keep up, you're left behind - same thing we tell kids.
My aunt is 96, has her own PC and uses email.
Which makes me wonder...what about McCain's mother? Does SHE use email? I expect she does.

If the McCain camp is choosing to see these issues as "attacks" on McCain's age, then they have no right to complain when the Obama camp points out attacks on Obama's race and patriotism.
But in fact these issues aren't related to McCain's age at all - they're related to his being elite and out of touch. It isn't that he can't remember how many houses he has because he's too old to remember, it's that he's too elite and out of touch. My grandparents are in their nineties - they can remember how many houses they own (one). The same with the issue of computer knowledge. I know people in their eighties who can tap dance around me with the computer. Older people are perfectly capable of learning to use computers, at least at a basic level. Most older people have HAD to learn about using computers. But not John McCain - he has flunkies do that for him. As for the "old fish" comment, it referred to Bush policies that we've had for eight years now that McCain is trying to wrap up in new paper and present as "change". It had nothing to do with McCain himself, the same as the "lipstick on a pig" comment had nothing to do with Palin.
But keep it up, Republicans. Keep whining about being "victims". It really sells to your "personal responsibility" crowd, doesn't it?

Going negative already is a sure sign of a desperate man and deperate poorly run party.
The House and Senate are Democratic, yeah a change is needed, not more Obama'a with their hands out waiting for the goverment to solve all their problems.
Dem's should be ashamed of what they have turned into, low educated slander mongers waiting in a welfare line while the rest of the world pours cheeply made goods into our ports, waiting to be sold at Walmart.
Dem's signed NAFTA, Dem's lifted the Chinese trade embargoes....The Democratic party ruined all the economic achievements made my Reagan in the 80's. And anyone with a college educations knows that it takes 10 years for to see if a economic plan has worked.
10 Years after Reagan was in office we had properity, 10 years after Clinton, We have WAR and recession...WAKE UP

Much has been made about the selection of Palin being an insult to women. Unfortunately that is not only a good analysis or observation, but the reality is that his selection was an insult to every citizen regardless of gender, age or race as it exhibited a callous disregard for the safety and well-being of this nation. Incompetence and ego driven stubbornness over the last 8 years have almost destroyed this nation economically and militarily and totally diminished any meaningful influence which we previously enjoyed worldwide. It is in comphrehensible to think that that we should suffer an additional 4 years of this disastrous governance under a McCain/Palin administration.

I don't care if Senator McCain does not use computers. Nor do I care if his clothes are out of style or if he is "old."
I care about his experience - including his serivce to his country - and his ability to lead this nation on a global stage.
Obama has no experience, has not served his country (particularly as the do-nothing senator in Illinois), and would be a disaster as U.S. President in the global community.
Obama is obvously desperate. He thought he would waltz right into the White House. He's done nothing to earn the highest office in this land.
I was swept up in Obama's messages of change and hope, and voted for him in the primary. I also helped elect him to the senate. But he has been nothing but a disappointment, and McCain will get my vote in November.

How can a comment or statement be an attack or a smear if it's the truth? I get so tired of ppl saying McCain / Palin is being attacked if they get called out on bogus information. McCain and Palin have been nothing but smear mavericks.
How can we expect them to do right by the American people and be honest when their road to the White House is a road of false smears?
Posted by: Oh Please | September 12, 2008 1:24 PM
This ad has nothing to do with McCain's age. There are plenty of older Americans who are fortunate enough to have access to computers and who are curious and patient enough to have learned how to use them. My 80 year-old grandmother is one of them. John McCain obviously lacks that curiosity and patience--not good for someone who wants to be President.
In the Information Age, the President of the United States needs a command of the technology that dominates the way we interact. Yes, whoever is elected will have a full-time staff attending to his every need, and if McCain insisted on getting his news via LPs, then some schmuck would be paid to spend all day recording headlines onto LPs so the President could get his news.
But what if, god forbid, there were an emergency situation and Uncle Johnny had to manage his own calendar or send out his own correspondence one day? I would hope that President of the United States would be able to function if left unattended for a few hours.

Nice smear, Obama! The man is a disabled vet! His hands don't work well--because of the beatings he took in Vietnam.
Excerpt from the Boston Globe: "McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes."
Is Obama's campaign trying to lose?
