The Swamp

If you've been following those electoral vote tracking maps which Republican strategist Karl Rove has been kindly sharing with us, you'll remember that Republican presidential nominee John McCain gained some ground after the presidential nominating conventions..

But since the economy has headed south, Democrat Barack Obama has gained in the polling in states that will settle the presidential election contest.

With 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, Rove's newest tally of the state polls as of Sunday shows Obama favored in states holding 259 votes -- up 48 - from the last review just four days earlier - and McCain favored in states holding 163 - down 26 from that previous tally.

The votes available in "toss-up states,'' such as Florida and others where the polls are too close for comfort for anyone in the latest polling: 116, down 22.

"It's too soon for the 29 state polls released since last Wednesday to reflect the post-debate political environment, but it's clear that the recent economic news has been favoring Barack Obama,'' Rove reports.

"Obama now holds his largest lead over McCain since July 17,'' Rove notes of the electoral tally. " With 36 days remaining before the election, each candidates has the time and ability to change the dynamic of the race - and I am confident that will happen several times more.''

Lol this map is even from good old Karl, so you know it is still skewed towards repub's

And there was much rejoicing.

Latest Gallup poll: Obama 52%, McCain 44%

Latest RCP Poll: Obama +4.6%. This is just about the largest lead Obama has had in the campaign. Obama gaining strength in many of the key states, and McCain slowly watching Florida slip away - and Barack has not even released Hillary to go to Florida and campaign!!!

Then add the Rove polling in, and it looks bad for McSame.

The American people are seeing the real John McCain - saying yesterday morning how HE had gone to DC to get the bill passed - which did NOT pass (ditto Mitt Romney telling everyone how McCain was responsible for the bill passing!!). How HE "suspended" his campaign - even though his ads were still running all over the country.

I do not like the looks of this. It looks like we are going to get a three house government again. Look out for a rough ride when Pelosi and Franks are having tea at the White house every day.

Palin, Bush vs Gore!

...it's clear that the recent economic news has been favoring Barack Obama,'' Rove reports.

The financial acumen of the great Obama will surely save us from this Bank World melt-down.

Some of the credit, though should also go to Chris Dodd and Barney Frank for all of their fine legislative work, that has also helped to promote this latest, favorable Obama impression for the astute undecided voter.

Django, looking past your sarcasm, it could also be that McCain's erratic behavior and political grandstanding might have totally put off a lot of people. And also the fact that McCain with all his experience he touts couldn't make a case for himself over Obama in the debate.

A big aspect to leadership is being even-keeled and inspiring confidence in people in tough times. McCain has failed that test recently, and Obama has excelled at it. The polls specifically dealing with that issue have shown it, and it only take simple observation to see it; you don't need a poll.

I don't believe the polls, I have a confidence McCain will win.
Obama Hussein Barack remains unknown and what he talks just memorized from somebody wrote for him to talk.
I don't trust Obama and never will.

Regardless McCain will still win.
Barach Hussein Obama still unknown to us all. He jas ZERO executive experiences, and whatever he talked was written by somebody for him to memorize. I don't trust this man who has no clear background.

I understand what you are saying and I certainly understand the ' inspiring confidence part', but I just never seem to see that FDR quality in the great Obama. For me, it is too much like "we need to capture bin Laden". I pretty much already recognize that too.

I don't see McCain as grandstanding or making a political play. Like the great Obama, he is also a U.S. senator. Every once in a while they should use their senatorial status / presence to throw down on a serious time-sensitive problem such as this. That IS in the job description.

My political issue, is that the average American does not really pay close attention to, or really understand these type of somewhat complex problems. They only know to believe whatever Campbell Brown, Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, or Brian Williams seem to think is right on any given day. "WaMu is belly up, that money is gone, and the Republicans done it". I understand your comments, but no one has solved this problem as of today, and no one, in my opinion, should be conferred any special hero status based on what had transpired to this point.

My standards for even any suggestion of a comparison to FDR, Abe Lincoln, JFK, RR, may be a bit high. Certainly a lot higher than this. Thanks.

Beatrice: You don't have to trust Obama but it might help you sound better if you got his name right. Your reasoning is quite funny though.

Beatrice, the polls speak the truth. Your thought process is pathetic.

Obama/Biden....YES!!!

The real issue is not how well Obama or McCain might do state-by-state, but that we shouldn't have battleground states and spectator states in the first place. Every vote in every state should be politically relevant in a presidential election. And, every vote should be equal. We should have a national popular vote for President in which the White House goes to the candidate who gets the most popular votes in all 50 states.

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC). The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral vote -- that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

Because of state-by-state enacted rules for winner-take-all awarding of their electoral votes, recent candidates with limited funds have concentrated their attention on a handful of closely divided "battleground" states. In 2004 two-thirds of the visits and money were focused in just six states; 88% on 9 states, and 99% of the money went to just 16 states. Two-thirds of the states and people have been merely spectators to the presidential election.

Another shortcoming of the current system is that a candidate can win the Presidency without winning the most popular votes nationwide.

The National Popular Vote bill has passed 21 state legislative chambers, including one house in Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, North Carolina, and Washington, and both houses in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The bill has been enacted by Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. These four states possess 50 electoral votes-- 19% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.

If this electoral vote tally remains solid, that would mean that McCain needs to win all but one or two of the tossup states, while Obama would only need to win one or two. Seems like an uphill battle for McCain.
