Former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift tonight denounced, in no uncertain terms, Barack Obama's "lipstick on a pig" metaphor as he tried to tell voters why they shouldn't believe John McCain and Sarah Palin when they say they represent change.
"I guess the formation of the Palin Truth Squad couldn't have happened too soon," said Swift, who chairs the new rapid response group and demanded an apology from Obama on Palin's behalf.
"You would think having gone through a hard fought primary with Sen. Clinton, the Obama team would have figured out how to respectfully engage in a debate," said Swift, who described Obama's comments as "the low road," and said Obama's aides and advisers have been similarly disrespectful.
Yet the Obama campaign just as swiftly objected to Swift's objection, noting that McCain himself had once called Democrat Hillary Clinton's health care plan "lipstick" on the "pig" of a health plan that she had advanced as first lady -- and the Obama camp tonight accused the McCain camp of playing "the gender card.''
Swift seemed to find no humor in Obama's words today, which she said were obviously aimed at Palin since she was the only one of four candidates in the race who wears lipstick.
In suburban Detroit, Obama said, perplexed, that the Republicans were trying to take away his mantra of change.
"How do they have the nerve to say it?" Obama asked. "When you've been supporting this current president, your party has been in power, and you're not offering anything new, how is it that you're serious about change? You're not. It's empty words. You're just saying it because you realize, 'Obama has been talking about change. That seems to be working. Maybe we should try to say it too.'"
And in Lebanon, Virginia, he said, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," as laughter erupted. "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, but it's still going to stink after eight years."
It should be noted that during the Republican primary, McCain compared former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to a pig -- as well as commenting on Clinton's "lipstick'' health-care plan. "Never get into a wrestling match with a pig. You both get dirty -- and the pig likes it," McCain said then, declining to respond to criticism leveled by Romney.
Campaigning in Des Moines, Iowa, in October, McCain had criticized the Democratic contenders for proposing what he called costly universal health care proposals requiring excess regulation. He had not studied Clinton's health-care plan, he said, but it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
""I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig,'' McCain said of Clinton's proposal then.
"Enough is enough," Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement e-mailed to reporters this evening after Swift's complaint about Obama.
"The McCain campaign's attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy - the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's health care plan just last year," she continued. "This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run."

Maybe after they loose the election there is a career for all in Stand-Up. As for fish, it doesn't take 8 years to stink. As for pigs, they grow up on farms. As for pork, Farm Bill!

This is going to blow up but it is taken way out of context. Obama would never make a low blow like this, it was a complete accident. Lipstick on a pig is an old expression, look it up on google. The fact that it coincided with Palin's lipstick remark is very very bad. I mean it makes him look terrible. But it wasn't intentional and was not a reference to Palin. Look at any of Obama's speeches and you will see that he would never go that low.

Of course he should apologize.
The Obamessiah says, "How do they have the nerve to say [reform]?" Funny. Every thinking American is asking the same thing about him.
There is nothing in Obama's background and record to back up the vague sloganeering about "change", "uniting", "hope". The guy is a run-of-the-mill corrupt Chicago Machine hack with a thin record.
Obama has had a 17-plus year personal financial quid pro quo relationship with the political "fixer" Tony Rezko. He has endorsed the worst, most corrupt and incompetent politicians in Cook County -- Todd Stroger, Alexi Giannouias and Richard Daley.
Obama claims to not accept money from federally registered lobbyists... but he accepts money from these same lobbyists' business associates and spouses... and he accepts money from lobbyists who happen to not be registered. He accepts bundled checks. He uses lobbyists and other government relations professionals as advisers. He has been bought and paid for by the big corporations.
How stupid does he think the electorate is, anyway?

McCain used that very phrasing in talking about Hillary Clinton's health care policy. Perhaps John McCain should apologize to Hillary for insulting her?
from 10/11/07 The Swamp...
"McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal."

The republican fake outrage is getting old.
Sarah Palin is a serial liar, a global warming denier, someone who believes in killing wolves and bears from aircraft, someone who does not believe in environmental protection, and a religious fanatic who would take this country into her "end times" scenario. They're hiding her from the press because they don't want these FACTS to come out. Once they do, the nation will reject her for good and sufficient reasons.
As far as deference, I suggest that she be given the same amount of deference that the republicans and the media gave to Hillary Clinton since 1992.

For what, for using an age old saying !!? Come on, Republicans, get some real issues to discuss, instead of avoiding the political debate. America needs an adult, meaningful, political debate, nor more name-calling and distortions and misinformation !!! Change the subject, but that will not work, the times are too important and America is in great need of an honest, compassionate leader. That leader is Senator Obama, he deserves your support, he wants to lead America, back to its ideals !! The Bush-McCain Republicans have had their time in our great office of the Presidency and look at the mess, in which, they have put our country. No more, Republicans, until they apologize for leaving America in the ditch and in the lurch !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Passive aggressive, that's the Obama couple! They're kind of piggy themselves, aren't they?
Posted by: Beth | September 9, 2008 8:24 PM
Man, the McCain campaign must think the American people are stupid. Trying to spin Obama talking about McCain-Palin as "CHANGE" into him calling her a pig? Give me a break.
Posted by: Ed | September 9, 2008 8:24 PM
Should Obama apologize?
Absolutely not. First of all, McCain used the same phrase when referring to Hillary Clinton's health care plan. Secondly, it's a metaphor! I don't feel that McCain or Obama should have to apologize for a figure of speech. I don't believe that either candidate meant to call Clinton or Palin a pig.
This is another example of how the American public is distracted from the real issue
Posted by: Dave P | September 9, 2008 8:26 PM
I doubt very seriously, that Jane Swift is that stupid, however this fits into the pattern of the GOP's plan of attack. Keep the people distracted by continuously launching baseless accusations and employing circular reasoning, thereby placing the focus on anything, other than the issues relevant to this nation.
Posted by: Joe | September 9, 2008 8:26 PM
An interesting way to put this story...just how is it relevant to Obama's sexist gutter slur to dredge up something McCain said in a long ago primary ABOUT A MALE?
FTR, I just heard ABC's report on the same story, and they totally evaded any context on Sarah Palin while mentioning Obama's remark.
This was obviously a crude remark aimed at Palin's 'the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? lipstick' joke.
Stay classy, Obama...the more we get to know you, th emore we see who you really are.
Posted by: Joshuapundit | September 9, 2008 8:28 PM

Posted by: Pat | September 9, 2008 8:30 PM
Absolutely not, you have to be joking. its a metaphor used for centuries in this country, the one about the fish is lot better anyway. can you get a clue and write something more important, like the fact that people are dying still in this senseless war, loosing jobs, loosing homes, no one gives a shit about your stupid article, but I really enjoyed that section on McCain referring to whatever his name is as a pig, that is priceless, thank you for that!

McCain speaking about Hillary Clinton -
McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health-care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the 1990s.
"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.
Posted by: Theresa | September 9, 2008 8:36 PM
It should also be mentioned in the article that when McCain rebuked Hillary Clinton for her health care proposal he also said, 'I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig'. From this readers perspective, truth is a two way street.
Posted by: Rizzo | September 9, 2008 8:36 PM
No, this is a well-known phrase referring to their campaign as a whole, not to Palin personally. Sheesh! This is no certainly less sexist than Palin's joke about the difference between hockey moms and bulldogs! Crimeny! To paraphrase Gov. Palin, quit your whining.

I am in shock after watching MSNBC and David Gregory this evening.
He interviewed the MSNBC investigative reporter and asked her about Sarah Palin's views and actions as governor in Alaska.
The reporter stated Sarah Palin has expressed her belief's that children should be carried full-term once conceived.
She then explained that once elected Governor Palin had done nothing to make abortion more restrictive in Alaska and refused to call a special legislative session when individuals on the far-right requested her too to address this matter.
David Gregory looked shocked that a far-left lie was being shot down on MSNBC.
It appears that Sarah Palin has strong beliefs regarding abortion but she has done nothing to bring fear to others who have equally strong beliefs going the other way!

I've used that same phrase countless times over the years. Never once did I use it to refer to Sarah Palin, or any other woman, for that matter.
The phrase "lipstick on a pig" means to make only superficial or cosmetic changes. It has absolutely no sexist component whatsoever. It is entirely appropriate in context given the new found emphasis on "change" - from Republican rule to Republican rule, apparently - now parroted by the McCain campaign.
And no, mouth breathers, "cosmetic" isn't sexist, either...

McCain opposed this year's 21st Century G.I. Bill, the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Instead, he co-sponsored a weaker version of the bill. The bill he opposed passed 92-6. He is the only senator who didn't show up to vote, aside from Senator Kennedy, who was hospitalized.
McCain voted against an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA’s medical facilities.
McCain voted against providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.
McCain voted against increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes.
Retired Army General Robert Gard said McCain's proposal for concentrating health care on just combat injuries would "shortchange those veterans who suffer from non-combat related conditions." He is apparently unconcerned about the number of veterans this would affect, including the 15% of female combat veterans who suffer from military sexual trauma.
When the VA was busted for circulating a memo suggesting doctors lower their diagnosis for veterans in order to save money, McCain replied: "it''s not important."
McCain voted against requiring minimum periods between deployments last year and against limiting soldiers' deployment to twelve months.
McCain said Obama didn't visit our wounded soldiers in Germany because he couldn't take the press with him. But the press was never scheduled to be there! Obama was only going to take a military adviser to the hospital in Germany. The adviser is a campaign staff member, so the Pentagon decided to consider it an improper political event and nixed the adviser. In fact, under the same rule, McCain was denied a visit to a military base in April. Also, Obama visited wounded Americans in Iraq without any press around. A McCain ad showed Obama shooting a basket and said he "made time to go to the gym but canceled a visit with wounded troops. Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras." But the basketball footage was from a visit with troops in Kuwait.
McCain assured the public five years ago that we would get out of Iraq fast, lose few Americans, and the Iraqis would bear the expenses.
McCain said Iraq and Pakistan share a border.
McCain thought Iran was training, as he put it, "Al Qaeda in Iraq," but Al Qaeda is a Sunni group and Iran is Shi'ite.

The only reason that it was clear that Obama was referring to Palin was that Palin first called herself a pitbull with lipstick on. I think it is a shame that we thought it was funny that the first woman VP nominee in the republican party essentially called herself a bitch with lipstick on during her acceptance speech. Palin should first apologize to women for furthering the notion that being a powerful woman means being a bitch.
Posted by: Lissa | September 9, 2008 9:22 PM
If McCain apologizes for "calling" Mitt Romney and Hillary pigs (as he did during the campaign as others above have pointed out), then yeah, then maybe Obama should consider apologizing. Until then, forget it. The Republican camp are acting like whiny babies at this point -they spent their entire convention mocking Obama, rather than discussing how they were going to fix this country. How anyone can't see through the rhetoric is beyond me.

Um, those folks quoting McCain using Lipstick on a Pig comment are missing the point. Yes, it is a common phrase used a million times, but things are a little different in the Presidential race once Palin used the Pitbull Lipstick comment. Obama's comment was a prepared remark and he knew what he was doing and so did the crowd when they laughed at it. How would the Dems like it if McCain used "calling a spade a spade"? Not funny. Nor was Obama's childish remark.
Barack just had his "macaca" moment.

Last November, McCain said the following about Hillary Clinton's health care program: "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig,"
If the Republicans keep making an issue out of this, Obama should release a statement quoting McCain. Then he should keep using the phrase, and when he does it point out that he's borrowing from McCain's rhetoric against Hillary Clinton.
If Obama apologizes for his comment, he's hopeless.

McSame never was concerned about teen pregnancy before he chose a VP running mate hot for abstinence. Palin is the one to throw babies and teen pregnancy in out faces at the convention. I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, but if you see the video and listen to the context he really seems to be saying Palin is a pig and McCain is an old fish. Even the audience was left with that impression given their cheering.
Over the last two weeks Palin has been using her lipstick/pitbull joke and the Obama uses his lipstick/pig joke. Plus his campaign's initial attack on McCain was that he was too old.
That's a little too coincidental for me. And, again, his audience thought that's what he meant. That's why they cheered so much.
I think this is a comment that's going to stick to Obama especially after he ignored Hillary for the VP spot.
Posted by: SAM | September 9, 2008 9:52 PM
Palin should apologize to hocky moms for calling them (B word that ends in ch) when she said the difference between them and a pitbull is lipstick. That was her quote and she wasn't referring to male pitbulls. The word for female pit bull is the same for all female dogs. So she stepped in dog doo doo on that one and no one called her out for that. At least not yet.

Lipstick on a pig? How is that different than Scarah saying she was a pit bull in lipstick? Whitewashing a lie is whitewashing a lie in any other language. I'll bet Bush and Cheney are glad for Palin in the face of the worst economy equaling the depression, the lies for war, no troops to really come home, and the record number of troops commiting suicide. Bush does to the troops what bad horsemen do to their horses--he rides them hard and puts them away wet. McCain seems to approve. Acceptable phrase, gentle screener.

Remember OBAMA has started his campaign stop the smear in politics; he devoted a website to all smears against him, and this is one of his changes he's supposed to bring. He's not going to be like every politician. He is going to rise above it.

It could be an honest mistake. How could he be expected to know Palin had made a direct analogy about herself using the word "lipstick" almost a whole week ago if he doesn't even know his own party controls both houses of Congress?

I've had it with the potty-mouthed liar from Alaska who gets the free ride and took six years and five colleges to get a bachelors degree in journalism. I've had enough of dummies calling the shots.
Come on you news reporter journalists make me proud, report on the pit bull with lipstick's distortions and tell us what she has really done and who she really is.
Come on people, let's get Democrats registered to vote and get out the vote for Obama, I've had enough of these ignorant lying fools.

Obama seems to know a lot about PIGS. What LIPSTICK DID HE USE with Larry Sainclair?
Democrats are out of control! PANIC ON BOARD! They missed the unique opportunity to put a woman on the ticket. The MAVERICK DID IT. Sarah Palin will come out pretty soon to give the final shot. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. CAN OBAMA HANDLE PUTIN & MEDVEDEV? THE ANSWER IS NO! THE GAME IS OVER. Democrats will lose again.

If he apologizes, he may as well concede. Why should she be allowed to insult, slur, lie, and say basically anything she can to get elected and one comment, obviously taken out of context, be considered offensive. Frankly, the whole Repub platform is lipstick on a pig.

Obama made a BIG mistake in doing this! It's always demeaning for a man to call a woman a pig (demeaning to the MAN, that is!) His speechwriters should be fired! They are desparate! They should just cool down before they blow it!
Posted by: Anita | September 9, 2008 10:27 PM
The inescapable conclusion is that Obama is totally inept as an extemporaneous speaker (that's off the cuff, for you left wingers). It was just another of his gaffes and women all over the country are incensed that he was referring to Palin or using that term that is derogatory to women in general. And he wonders why white women are deserting in droves. So will black women if they really think about it.
Posted by: Annabelle | September 9, 2008 10:30 PM
Absolutely NO - he should not apologize to Palin. With all the smarmy commentary from her about Obama in the RNC speech she deserves to get hit back - even if she's a "girl".
Granted someone else wrote her speech but she could have had it changed. She should have no special dispensation simply because she's a woman, has a baby with a disability and a pregnant daughter. She is a person who goes for the jugular and should be treated in kind. Not especially a good political move but what she deserves given her behavior and lack of empathy for victims of rape and incest, etc.

Obama owes Palin an apology. That was the lowest thing any candidate has said in this election!
Posted by: Gidget | September 9, 2008 10:37 PM
Obama owes an apology to all women, not just Palin. Pig is a derogatory term for women and he's saying that cosmetics don't matter, they're still pigs. Obama and his minions get their noses out of joint when someone says they're "uppity," a perfectly acceptable word in the dictionary meaning arrogant. Now he insults women by
likening them to a pig. What a dufus!
Posted by: Bonita | September 9, 2008 10:38 PM
What does Obama need to apologize for? Is Palin all of a sudden a victim... can't she take it?
Give me a break. I hope Obama doesn't fall for this crap.
I'm a woman and I don't think that expression has anything to do with gender. It's an expression that has been used a zillion times... I love the way McCain is using Palin in the election. It's a joke. She's a joke.
If the Republican's can't handle a simple expression then they are not fit to lead. Cry babies.

I am glad that people are not being distracted from what the real issues are in the race. As people are suffering from high gas prices, high food cost, high college tuition, high clothing costs, and everything else you can think of, they want Americans to focus on irrelevant comments.
It is great to witness Americans standing up and declaring "not this time." There is no way the media pundits can spin the fact that we are in the worst economic situation in years!. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
EIGHT YEARS IS ENOUGH! WE WILL NOT BE FOOLED AND BAMBUZZLED INTO FALLING FOR ALL OF THE DISTRACTIONS!
John McCain knows, the Republican Party knows, we all KNOW that Palin is not ready to be Commander-in-chief of the most powerful nation on earth! I have been listening to her speak over the past week, She says the same thing over and over again. The SAME things she said in her acceptance speech at the convention.
Her big gaffe on the lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers, " ??? Her comments demonstrates a total lack of understanding about one of the key economic issues that face the next administration!
It is clear that she is being shielded quite heavily by the McCain campaign because they know when she has to answer questions she does not have a clue about health care, education, foreign policy and the declining economy!
John McCain showed just how much he cares about our beloved country, by choosing someone as inexperienced as Palin! Moreover, Palin is being used to boost the Republican Party base, who cares nothing about her, her family (children) etc. as long as she hops through their hoops to get to where they want to go. Well meaning women should be outraged at the audacity of old man McCain taking advantage of young woman Palin!
However, it appears to tell us a lot about his judgment, after all, all of the women he has chosen have been "beauty queens" and apparently much younger than himself!
After all the hoopla is over, the American public will choose the candidate who has been consistent on his call for change over the past year, the candidate who has changed forever the way campaigns will run, how funds are raised and how people get involved and motivated from the bottom up!
Thanks Obama for caring enough to keep it real!

Another attempt to divert attention from issues by the GOP, and make it an election about 'personality', in which they can slander and lie their way to victory. Ignore the issues of the economy, the quagmire of a war based on lies, our declining public education, erosion of civil rights, and the imposition of pro-life and other lifestyle choices by the GOP gov't. Vote for keeping things the same as they have been for the past 8 years b/c you think Sarah Palin is 'hot' or McCain's 5 years in solitary somehow should negate his strict party-line voting that has led us to trouble. Then watch the country's remarkably fast decline continue, suck up to the Chinese and Russians to get in their favor, and become another failed empire in the history books, doomed to fail as a result of arrogance and stupidity.

Of course Obama meant nothing by it. This committee has been formed to take nothing and make it into something ugly. This tactic started with Bush senior and is so dishonorable, but unfortunately quite effective. Most Americans haven't got the intelligence to decipher the rhetoric. The Republicans will ride dishonest strategies like this all the way into the White House again, and frankly, I am sick of the whole thing. Our nation will never be able to unite after this election. Anyone who's seen the video can tell that Obam is making a reference to Palin because of her line at the RNC that the difference between hockey moms and pit bulls was lipstick.
During the primaries, Obama did this sort of thing a lot to Hillary Clinton --- he would say things that the audience took the way he wanted them to take it, and he'd get big cheers and applause, but then later would claim he didn't mean it like that.
It's very passive-aggressive...and childish. Like the speech he gave right after the Philadelphia ABC debate where he gave Hillary Clinton "the finger" and then later claimed he was just scratching his nose. But, you can tell how angry he was about his poor debate performance...and this was not nose scratching.

McCain voted for $150 billion in earmarks over the last 6 years. Sarah Palin is America's welfare queen, She requested, lobbied for and got more pork than any other mayor or governor in the nation.
She took a small town with no debt and ran it $22 million into the red even though she hired a Jack Abramoff associated lobbyist to help her now indicted buddy Sen. Ted Stevens get Wasilla $27 million in federal pork.
She's blowing millions as governor giving each Alaskan household over $3200 out the state's coffers this year while taking another $300 million+ from the rest of us in federal pork.
Republicans will do or say anything to get elected. Faux outrage, baldfaced lies, you name it. Enough already.

I mean this sincerely: individuals who do this - the 'gotcha' and the word-twisters, the 'black hole' means racist and 'lipstick on a pig' means sexist peddlers - are utterly blameworthy. Why don't we call them out more often, instead of responding in a reactionary fashion to their insane accusations?

The wealthy GOPers have found a way to get the "commoners" to vote Repub, so they can get their tax cuts. Anyone making at or under $227,000/year needs to Google and take a serious look at where the McCain vs. Obama tax plans will have them in the next few years. You're being used. The rich GOP don't care about abortion and prayer in school - they just care about their money and you're handing it right to them. I hope you get a thank you card.
And, when the economy continues its fall into recession, what's going to happen as the poor get poorer? When a young person has nothing to lose, crime does pay.
And, when Palin and her ilk reverse Roe v Wade... will women stop getting pregnant and having babies? No, they will get pregnant, be unable to make a choice re: what is best not only for themselves but also for the BABY, and thus give birth to babies they cannot afford to raise. These babies will be humans that will suffer - they will live hungry and scared. Is this better? Is this what God wants? Is this what the GOP elitists really want -- more people needing help? More people encroaching on their perfect world?
Better lock the doors, GOPers - when you make this bed, you're going to have to lie in it.

Palin is supposedly tough as nails, but thus far, measured by the bleating from the McCain campaign (yes, it's still he that would be C.I.C, everyone else seems to have forgotten that), the nails seem to be the variety that dwell on ones fingertips.
I want to know what colors Palin favors for her lips and nails.
Is it "Rouge Cou", "Light Sweet Crude" or the more subtle shade of "Trooper Taupe"?

Posted by: Nick | September 10, 2008 12:40 AM
The people asking for the apology are the ones that must think that Palin is a pig. This is a common saying and it fits the McCain campaign without implying any personal insult.
McCain must be very happy that he has shifted so much discussion away from the issues of the campaign over to frivolities. It's understandable. He has very good reason to want to do that.

The "lipstick" on a pig comment is clearly directed at Palin and plays back to her own reference to lipstick during the convention. Obama is clearly rattled by her, enough to throw off the veneer of civility and manners he has maintained to date. This won't help him. He should leave the mudslinging to the naturally ungracious and mean-spririted Biden. Biden is good for little else. It is certain Obama will lose now, possibly in a landslide. But he had run two good campaigns and could have come out of a loss with his head high, a gentleman. Even that is gone now. Sad,

In the big picture of Political Jabs this is no big deal. However, given the recent "surge" in the polls, much of which is attributed to white working women, this comment was politically stupid. It was also too calculated to be just an ad-hoc comment, we know he is totally scriptied. Obama's lip stick / pig remark ... and, Biden's unsavory children with special needs remarks show us what a couple of creeps these two candidates are. In lieu of Sarah Palin's comment about hockey moms, pit bulls and lip stick, Obama's lip stick/ pig remark was extremely demeaning. Even though I am not an Obama supporter, at least I thought he had some degree of class and sophistication. He can try to cover his tracks by saying that the lip stick remark was not directed towards Governor Palin, but anyone with half a brain knows that's exactly what he meant. I think Obama knows his campaign is in real trouble, and that's why he's stooping to such desperate, insulting and distasteful attacks. Obama is definitely not Presidential material.

McCain's handlers are trying to intimidate the press into leaving the poor "barracuda" alone. Dionne nails it when he exposes the shielding tactic for what it is:

A very angry man-- this liberal senator. Headline today, Sept.9. McCain leads Obama 49-44. He got a reason to lose it and perhaps "unintentionally" said the wrong thing.
Posted by: eva | September 10, 2008 5:03 AM
Politician or common folk, the worst thing anyone can do is compare any woman to a pig! It surely displays that Barrack has no common scense what so ever, this is the Democratic's dream man, hah!
If he thinks this way about this issue, what about the others? The true inner self is showing, what about his true intensions?
Demos, your in for a real surprise! This Is History!!

The Democrats continue to lose another presidential election, Obama is demonstrated every day as the worst candidate, has nothing to do its color, this man is sexist, doesn't like women who are better than him.
Obama should be remembered for his Rev. Wright and his best friends (Rezco, Bill Ayers, etc.) and need paint better their past, using another "lipstick".

For those of you defending Obama, you've already forgotten this video, haven't you?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoOFp-RDpvM
Have doubt? How about he does exactly the same "face scratch" move in front of another audience at the same place in his speech (1:18 into the video)?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlR9DNfqGD4
So, he gives Hillary Clinton - a FELLOW DEMOCRAT - the finger passive-aggressively in front of two audiences, and you think he was just making an innocent use of the phrase "lipstick on a pig?"
John McCain made it clear he was talking about Hillary's health care POLICY, whereas Obama was ragging on Palin and McCain the whole speech. Stop defending a juvenile joker that Obama is!
Posted by: Paul | September 10, 2008 6:55 AM
Oh for crying out loud. Is the word "lipstick" now forbidden because Palin uttered the word?
"Lipstick on a pig" phrase has been used forever to describe someone who is one way and tries to pretend they are another. Obama is far too smart to refer to Palin in this way and has more respect for women than that.
Stick to the facts and stop making up stuff that isn't there. Maybe even act like adults.

Obama is the real pig in all of this. Chicago and Cook County politics taken to the national level.
Posted by: Phil | September 10, 2008 7:24 AM
Hell yes Obama should apologize for that jerkwater comment he made about pigs and lipstick! This was no accident and he damned well knew who he was referring to here. I am now sick and tired of the ridiculous and uncalled for attacks on Sarah Palin. The truth is Obama is terrified and running scared because he is now dealing directly with something neither he or the Democratic party did not expect in their worst nightmares, namely an empowered woman who happens to be a Republican and who is now empowering other women just by her example alone. Right now, McCain doesn’t have to do a single thing to insure Obama is going to end up blowing the election. Obama is doing it all by himself, every time he now opens his mouth and even remotely makes reference to Sarah Palin. Maybe someone in his campaign needs to offer him a nice piping hot cup of SHUT THE HELL UP!

no apology!
when are the republicans going to apologize for ruining the image of america in the eyes of the world?
when are the republicans going to apologize to the families of all the soldiers who died in a senseless war in iraq?
when are the republicans going to apologize to all the families who lost loved ones in katrina?
and the list goes on and on...
was this a personal attack by obama on palin? no. it was a personal attack on every right-wing neo-con who has tarnished our once great nation.
get over yourselves.

Maybe McCain should apologize for using the lipstick on a pig comment that he used on Hillary Clinton.

Kermit the Frog just called, he said Miss Piggy will not be voting for Senator Obama and she is outraged. Obama needs to stay on message, he's not good at trying to be funny or cutesy, it's just not his thing. It gets him in trouble every time. Obama needs to be himself and get back on message.

there is nothing to apologize for. we should all start concentrating on things that actually matter regarding the election and stop wasting time on non issues.
Posted by: jt IL | September 10, 2008 8:03 AM
Listen to the crowd react when Obama said this - they completely understood the double entendre that was being used, for its so close in time to the lipstick comment from Palin. Yes, it was meant as it sounded; yes, Obama's denial is disingenuous.
Posted by: Gregg | September 10, 2008 8:03 AM
He didn't say anything wrong and even if he had actually called Palin a pig (by they way, yes this IS a common expression, maybe if you stopped watching American Idol for 5 minutes you would know something) who cares? The elephants aren't apologizing to the country or Obama for making fun of community organizing, a far more egregious insult and ascary sign of their utter disregard for anyone who is not already rich and powerful.

When Senator McCain apologizes for his misognist remarks and publicly addresses using the "c" word on his wife.
Posted by: Dick Yaney | September 10, 2008 8:07 AM
To those that would say Obama should be addressing McCain..President to President..I would say that currently the GOP is running Palin ahead of McCain..taking the spotlight off of him, understandably so, the classic misdirection..so in all fairness..Obama is going head to head with the top of the GOP ticket..at the moment..and all brought forth by the movers and shakers of the GOP running this campaign.
As for the "pig and lipstick" comment from Obama...it was all above boar-d.
You have to be careful what you say in explaining your case and what metaphors you bring to light in any speech because they can..and will be used against you..she inititated the allusion..Obama just had the wit to "one-up-her" and that's all within the boundaries of fairness and etiquette..after all, she was the one that mocked him first about his credentials as a "Community Organizer" in other words she oinked first so she had one coming..just remember Lady Palin.."he that oinks last oinks best."

Obama was not talking about Sarah Palin, He was talking about the McCain ticket.
The Republicans can win this election if we avoid the issues and play the sex discrimination card with this token.

Now we see why Obama didn't pick Hillary. He does not think a woman should be in the White House.
Well we got new for you sexist. A woman will be in the White House. And you will go back to Illinios.
I am glad the Dems picked Obama. His pick of Biden over Hillary and his anti-Women remarks will give John McCain and Sarah the Win.
God Bless America.

Why is anyone even discussing this? REAL journalists would ask hard questions about POLICY, not proverbs.
ASK Ms. Palin about her love of earmarks! That's a policy question! ASK Mr. McCain about his economic plan! THAT's a policy question.
These Republican shenagigans are intended to distract the American voter from what really matters. And it aint lipstick on a pig.

no apology is needed - same thing McCain said years ago about Hilary's health care agenda.... if Obama was referring to the GOP show-pony gal - good for him - looks like he has a pair after all.

Posted by: john | September 10, 2008 8:33 AM
Novel solution for everyone here: How about each side take off their boxing gloves, stick to the issues, and speak on the solution they propose?
Now wouldn't that be a novel approach?

He shouldn't have to apologize. It's a saying! Palin is the one who called herself a "pitbull with lipstick"! What a joke.

no, he shouldn't apologize. it's a commonly-used colloquialism. why is it, Jill and Mike, that the conservative Trib will always praise the right, but the dems say or do ANYTHING and you vilify them? I'm sick of this bias on the Tribune's part.
Barack, do not apologize, and get out there and win!!
Posted by: marie s. | September 10, 2008 8:55 AM
Has anyone watched the clip of the speech prior to this comment. "Now think about it, these are the same folks that have been in charge for the last eight years.
"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap up an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink after eight years. We've had enough."
It could be interpreted as you can put lipstick on Sarah Palin and she is still a pig, like the folks in office for eight years.
Senator Obama, apologize and move on, you lost my vote for president, don't lose it as my senator....
Posted by: Emily | September 10, 2008 8:57 AM
Even is Obama was not talking about Sarah Palin, MANY people in the audience thought he was. That is reason enough to apologize.
Posted by: Anne | September 10, 2008 8:58 AM
McCain/Palin have nothing to say about what they are gonna do, so all they can talk about is Obama. How about some ideas from the repubs? They don't have any...
It is stupid and ridiculous to think Obama was using that remark against Palin.
The republican party is despicable...
Posted by: Ben | September 10, 2008 9:01 AM
The faux uproar by the far right regarding Obama's comment just shows what wusses they are. "Oh, he said something that I don't like." So if serial adulterer and admitted bribe taker John McCain and his serial liar running mate,Sarah Palin can not take the heat of a Presidential election, how can the American people honestly expect them to be able to stand up to those who mean to do harm against this country?

Obama will catch heat for this one. I'm from Texas where this phrase has been used long ago and I'M SAYING HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE ! ! !
FIrst off, Palin referenced herself as a Pitbull with lipstick, THAT IS WHERE HE SCREWED UP, he took a stab at Sarah Palin by referencing that AFTER what she said and then using the excuse of McCain using that comment prior. If he didn't like something McCain said he should have gone after McCain NOT PALIN who he's been after since she was named on the ticket. TIME TO RUN AGAINST MCCAIN or he won't get anyones respect. Pretty bad showing you're threatened by the VP pick especially after you say she has no experience !
Posted by: BAD COMMENT LOW BLOW> SAY SORRY | September 10, 2008 9:09 AM
Only people who think low end would project and blow the comment into something it wasn't. Obama has nothing to apologize for. McCain might want to apologize though for some of the below the belt punches he's been throwing.
Posted by: Mike | September 10, 2008 9:12 AM
I'm embarrassed for your newspaper that you would even publish something as inane as this given all of the real issues this country faces. I realize that it benefits McCain to take everyone's eyes off the ball, but the fact that the mainstream media repeatedly falls for these nonstories is a disservice to the reading public. Guess I know where I won't be turning for actual news about what the candidates' views are on issues as I decide who to vote for.
Posted by: Kathleen | September 10, 2008 9:12 AM
What does he need to apologize for. Since, Obama has been in the spot light. They have wanted him to aplogize for his back ground. Aplogize for not being ignorant, and now they want him to apologize doing what they have been doing for years playing the game.
So, i think Palin should put on her armour.
And he should not apologize, for what.

One of my personal litmus tests for whether people are nuts is if they believe that Creationism should be taught in public schools. Palin apparently strongly supports the teaching of Creationism. How can anyone with even half a brain support someone who supports the teaching of Creationism in public schools?
Posted by: John | September 10, 2008 9:13 AM
He wasn't even talking about Palin. Look at the context, Obama used an old expression to talk about how McCain says he is an agent of change, but his record shows quite the opposite. What Obama meant was McCain's record is a "Pig" and that he simply can't get away from it by putting "lipstick" on it. In fact McCain used the same expression recently and he was talking about Hillary Clinton. It is clear the hypocritical Republicans will use this yet again to keep people off focus. By the way, there are quite a few "pigs" in the Republican Party; pig like in fascist! Oh no, I just had an ugly thought, John McCain in drag and lipstick, excuse me, I think I'm ill. Seriously, the McCain Campaign is making me ill. No apology, McCain; how 'bout you go pound sand.
Posted by: Tim | September 10, 2008 9:14 AM
Absolutely not! We all know what he was referring to. All the hype about Sarah Palin will disappear soon what goes up must come down. Any woman who believes that a woman should carry a baby after rape on incest in truly insane. Don't tell me what I can do with my body. And her stand on Sex Education is truly ridiculous sweep around your own front doors before sweeping around others.
Posted by: Markila | September 10, 2008 9:43 AM
It was actually really funny... In one line, Obama alluded to both McCain (who used the line earlier) and Palin, who used the idea of lipstick....
and all tucked into a commonly used expression...
it was very clever and witty.... where is your sense of humor Republicans...??
do you have no sense of repartee?
Posted by: Sylvie | September 10, 2008 9:57 AM
Obama was clearly talking about McCain right before he made those comments, but you can count on the party without a plan for the future to try to create a bogus talking point about sexism to keep the sheep that voted for Bush twice from ever discussing the issues. This stunt by the McCain campaign which comes straight from the Rove book of misleading the sheep with nonsense long enough to get elected should be obvious to most people as a way to keep people from asking Palin the tough questions. They are hiding her away from interviews so they can keep the media and voters from ever learning about her records and opinions.
McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis said last week that the election "is not about issues" but instead is about the candidates' personalities."
The plan being to slander Obama and put the pretty hockey mom on tv telling the same lies over and over without fear of repercussion because they have made the painted the media as being sexist if they even question the woman running to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
You would think that most women would be smart enough to see they are being played, but if they are the same women that voted for Bush twice they have a record of being gullible, so buying the McCain camps spin shouldn't be a big surprise.

Anyone who doesn't think an apology is warrented, just doesn't get it.
Barack Obama is running for our nations highest office and should respect ALL people. Men/Women, Repubs/Dem's. This kind of behavior if it came from the oval office today, the media would demand an apology. Also, it's kind of like being married, even though you don't get it and everyone else does, apologize and move on.
Maybe Obama should have some town hall meetings like McCain wants to show him up at his own game. Quit swinging at pitches in the dirt by going after the VP choice and go directly after the candidate. If this is leadership, then please drop out....
Posted by: emily | September 10, 2008 10:44 AM
Obama doesn't get it. Apologize and move on, this story and his attacks of a vp candidate are playing into the repub's hands which is why they are tied/leading over obama. The longer he drags this on, the more votes he loses to the repubs. Quit playing tic-tac-toe and get back into a game that you can win. Heck, at this point Obama should do the town hall meetings with mccain instead of all the debates where nothing is gained, talk to the people and show your differences. The networks already love obama so why not appeal to the voters.
Posted by: emily | September 10, 2008 11:06 AM
Saw Obama's speech this morning. I am glad he did not apologize. He has nothing to apologize for. It is the media like Fox that have made this a big story. Hannity arguing with
Huckabee about this being a common phrase in the south. Anything to distract from the issues. Let's not let the McCain camp get their way.

NOBODY BETTER THAN A BIG MOUTH WILL SPEND TIME TALKING ABOUT LIPSTICK. JOHN McCAIN KNOWS HOW TO CLOSE THE DEAL: SARAH PALIN IS THE CHANGE OBAMA IS SPENDING ALL OF HIS TIME ONLY TALKING ABOUT. SARAH IS NOT PERFECT BUT WHO CARES? BY THE WAY, WHO IS PERFECT? SARAH PALIN IS THE CHANGE. WHO CAN DENY IT?
