ST. PAUL - Sarah Palin says she didn't need any focus group in her campaign for city council in Wasilla, Alaska. But a national focus group following Palin's address to the Republican National Convention suggests that the "hockey mom" scored a goal or two.
The results of a national survey conducted Wednesday night among 1,000 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and Independents showed that Palin boosted her own image with her speech Wednesday night. Media Curves reports on the study by HCD Research and the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, designed to gauge perceptions of Palin.
They found:
-- After seeing the speech, greater numbers of people "across all parties believe that McCain's selection of the first-term Alaska governor will help his campaign.''
-- Republicans were especially positive, with nearly three-quarters suggesting the pick will "definitely" help. Seventy percent of the Republicans said they will "definitely" vote for the ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin.
-- Palin's speech proved "equally effective in swaying votes for both men and women.''
-- Among independents who saw the speech, those who said they will "probably" or "definitely" vote for McCain increased by 10 percent among men and women.
The viewers were asked questions before and after the speech, and emotions were measured using the Ayer Emotion Battery.
