Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin keeps saying she stopped the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" in an attempt to burnish her credentials as a pork-fighting reformer. And reporters keep pointing out that her claim is exaggerated.
Still, the McCain-Palin campaign keeps up the misleading line that she was the main player in taking out the bridge.
And still reporters keep shedding light on the inexactness, to put it politely, of that claim. One of the latest journalistic efforts to separate fact from fiction comes from PolitFact, a service of the St. Pete Times and CQ.
Yet, the McCain campaign has cut a TV ad that pushes the line that Palin stopped the bridge. It's as if they've decided to go with that first two parts of that famous Lincoln quote: "You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time..."
Anyway, here's a lengthy excerpt of what PolitiFact's fact checkers found:
We've addressed the bridge claim twice before, giving her a Full Flop for having first supported the bridge before opposing it, and a Half True for her original "thanks-but-no-thanks" claim. But since the campaign is making an even stronger boast with this TV ad, we are going to address it separately here.
First, we should point out that the ad is misleading because it appears to justify the claim with a newspaper article on the screen. "PALIN FLIES HIGH AS A REFORMER," says the headline from the Anchorage Daily News that scrolls onto the screen as the announcer says "she stopped the Bridge to Nowhere."
We think many viewers will get the impression that the Anchorage Daily News article backs up the claim. But alas, it is TV ad sleight-of-hand. The article merely says she "ordered her administration to seek fewer congressional earmarks" after the bridge became a symbol of pork-barrel spending. There are no other details about the project or her role in ending it.
... The project came into national prominence when Taxpayers for Common Sense, an advocacy group that opposes wasteful spending, cited it as an extreme example of pork-barrel spending. The bridge's national notoriety was cemented with a Parade magazine cover story that ran Nov. 6, 2005, under the headline, "Are Your Tax Dollars Being Wasted?"
... By the time Palin pulled the plug on the Gravina bridge project in September 2007, much of the federal funding for the bridge had already been diverted to other transportation projects. The bridge would cost $398-million, Palin said then, and Alaska was $329-million short.
"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398-million bridge is not the answer," Palin said. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329-million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island."
Lois Epstein, director of the Alaska Transportation Priorities Project, which opposed funding for the Gravina bridge, said while it's true that Palin formally put an end to the project, "It wasn't really a bold move when she did it..."
... Keith Ashdown, a spokesman for Taxpayers for Common Sense, believes Palin has "hyperinflated her role" in killing the project.
"She put the final stake in the project," Ashdown said. "But there was already tremendous momentum for the project to be scrapped. She gets credit for saying that they were not to go forward with the bridge, but it was at death's door."
So, no, Palin wasn't the only one who stopped the bridge. The project was facing nationwide opposition and the state, which could have built the bridge anyway, had already spent much of the money on higher priorities. Palin didn't kill it, she just performed the last rites. And the ad is misleading because it cites a newspaper article that doesn't provide any evidence that the boast is accurate. So we rate the claim in the ad to be Barely True.
So why does the McCain-Palin campaign continue to hype her role in killing the Bridge to Nowhere? Because many politicians tend to get into the habit of exaggerating their accomplishments, especially when their claims can't be easily rebutted.
But this is one that can be readily shown to be overstated. Reporters keep showing that it is. So why continue along this path?
One obvious reason is that the McCain-Palin team has made it such an important part of her biography that they dare not back away from it now.
The other would be that somewhere in the McCain-Palin campaign is the belief, shared with Lincoln that you can indeed fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time.

Comments
Is this the best that Obama's Swamp surrogate, Frank James, can do to attack Sarah Palin? Quote some partisan source, even which source admits the ad is "True?"
Even the Alaska Democratic Party credits Palin with killing the bridge. See http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/31192_Alaska_Democratic_Party_Deletes_Page_Crediting_Sarah_Palin_with_Killing_Bridge_to_Nowhere
for the facts the Obama campaign and its Swamp surrogates don't want people to know about.

When you see factual stories that say that the US ranks 37th in Healthcare among industrialized nations, 26th in education among industrialized nations, when 1/3rd of high school students cannot locate Iraq on a map, it doesn't take much of a leap to see that most of the American public will buy whatever is told to them. If people dislike Obama and dislike McCain, they wish for someone like Sarah Palin. It doesn't matter what facts surround her, it becomes about what her position represents in the flock's minds. It's almost better that she doesn't have a defined or researched history. It allows people to invest their own hopes in what she can become.
It's a very scary thought, with how much is at stake, and what could very possibly be a Presidential position. People are supporting her based on the fact that she's new and unresearched, and they defend any negative discovered because they don't want it to become so "real". It has truly become a Palin/McCain ticket. Nobody talks about John McCain, and that's even scarier. People are so easily swayed by a VP nomination that they're going to forget all of the negatives that go with McCain and back a VP? I'm saving now for my healthcare premiums for the next 4-6 years if Palin/McSame win.

If McCain gets elected the first thing he'll have to do it throw his VP out of Washington based on RNC logic.

What's happened to Republicans.....wasn't dignity & true sincerity a part of their mantra....

Sarah Palin is being positioned by the Republican party as the second coming of Ronald Reagan. Parallels include:
1. confident, on-message, humor-filled delivery
2. appeal across a wide political spectrum
3. evoke Normal Rockwell images of bygone days "small town values"
4. call spouse cutsie names (Mommy, First Dude)
5. Blame government, congress, and the media for all problems
6. concentrate on small issues such as welfare queens and earmarks to distract from larger issues- expect that there will be some earmark queen and king scandal soon with members of Congress
7. formerly in show business (beauty queen and sportscaster)
8. Teflon- no matter how many lies and mistatements she makes, will not be held accountable
9 image of frontier or backwoods rugged individualism (western movies, Alaska)
10. really good hair

PALIN ATTEMPTED TO BAN BOOKS WHEN SHE WAS MAYOR. (her title was not INQUISITOR) FIRST AMENDMENT: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (Pretty self-explanatory and number one for a reason…what would the founding fathers have thought of book banning based on religious or policital leanings?)

SECESSIONIST…we must unite behind Sarah Palin. Her husband, Todd, was a member the Alaskan Independence Party working for Alaska to secede from the United States.
The director of Division of Elections in Alaska reported that Todd Palin registered in October 1995 to the Alaska Independence Party, a radical group that advocates for Alaskan secession from the United States, and remained a member until 2002, when he registered as undeclared while his wife ran for office.
She is more than sympathetic to the cause of secession; she is a participant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvPNXYrIyI
Sarah congratulates the secession party only 6 months ago on their political gains.
Her pastor knows how evil America is and often preaches that America will be punished. A cause all evangelicals share. Listen below.

Now, with her elected as VP just we can realize the Republic of Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, the Republic of California and the Republic of Alaska.

Nice try, Bruce. Read the post from the Alaska Dems again. It's almost word-for-word identical with the fact-check piece. She is NOT credited with killing the bridge, she simply performed the last rites. She was all too ready to accept it, and even expressed regrets when she announced its demise. For a reformer, she sure loves her pork.

Bush/Cheney = McCane/Garbage Pailin
And this year's version is WORSE. If it wasn't for Obama, I wouldn't even bother. If he wins, the hope of an ideal America will live. If the Republicans win, more of the same. War, Debt to protect the oil of the rich, outsourcing of jobs, Middle-class/Poor misery and loss of homes. I am waiting to see where America's heart is. Time will tell.

Caribou Barbie is as phony as the day is long. She has lied about the Bridge to Nowhere and she has lied about earmarks.
Then there's the small detail that she has exactly zero national or international experience. She has been governor of a state for less than two years, that barely has enough population to rate a Congresscritter.
Why Republicans want this unknown, untested politician a heartbeat away from Four More McSame is nothing less than bizarre.

People in politics should know that it takes a lot of haggling and compromise to achieve an end result, especially when it comes to public funding. The bottom line is at the end, Sarah Palin did stop the bridge to nowhere from being built in her state. That is the result that needs to be focused on.

This is typical of the Bush/Cheney voter and the current administration. No matter what facts are brought to light, they always "stay the course," no matter what blind alley it leads to. Forget the truth, and full speed ahead!
Please learn the art of critical thinking, pay attention to the news about these candidates, and THEN make a selection based on issues and facts, not just on campaign rhetoric and lies.

My question is as follows:
Did Senator Obama request over one billion dollars in eamarks in the 150 days he actually worked in the Senate?
Did Barack Obama attempt to direct one million dollars in earmarks to his wife's employer?
How many earmarks has Senator Biden requested in his 29 years in the Senate?
Did John McCain ever request an earmark while he was an elected official in D.C.?

A brief search shows that the 2 people quoted in the above article as "nonpartisan" experts attacking Gov. Palin are both Dem Party activists. Anyone surprised that Frank James would do this?
Lois Epstein was in fact a Clinton administration appointee. Keith Ashdown works for CREW, an organization founded by Dem Party staffers to feed friendly reporters with quotes from a supposedly "nonpartisan" source.
Frank, in this internet age, you journalists simply can't get away with this kind of slimy "reporting" any more.

To you folks out there who are trying to claim that Palin killed the "Bridge to Nowhere" project, please re-read the article and then read a couple more on this issue. While yes, she put the final nail in the coffin of the project, the feds had already pulled $329 million of the $398 million that she had actively and publicly lobbied for. The feds pulled it because public outrage of the project was so loud and on point that they had no choice. If the feds had not pulled the money, she would have had here cute little face on TV with her high pitch nasally voice still fighting for that project. Let's not try to parse words here, please. She enjoys her pork just like any other politician, including McSame.

I guess the real question is where did the other funds go that were originally "earmarked" for the bridge. If this was true pork barrel and she was against it why did those funds get diverted to "other" projects and not just returned to the federal budget. Obvioulsy "pork barrel" in one context is not necessarily "pork barrel" in another.

Do you find yourselves running out of excuses for them after eight years? You should be.
Isn't it obvious to you Republicans and you self ordained conservatives by now that people like Bush, Cheney, McCain and Palin laugh at you behind your backs? Wake up. It's amazing to me how people who didn't even know who Sarah Palin was a week ago, are now slamming her to the ground with hyped up media stories as if they have been following her entire political life for the past 6 years.
Also amazing are those who are practically proclaiming Barack Obama as the lord and savior of this country, when 2 years ago, nobody had ever heard of him either - and we haven't learned much about him since.
Now as x-wizard noted, we shouldn't be voting blind on campaign rhetoric and lies. We should be voting based on issues and facts, remembering that we have heard very little from either candidate on how they will address issues such as education, healthcare, and economy as well as hot-button issues such as military operations & national security. Have voters really researched each candidate's position or have they just flowed along with the hot media topics? Or worse yet, are we, like so many in the 18-30 age group, getting our political coverage from the "Daily Show"? That indeed is frightening.
Each candidate, heck, every politician I have ever heard, will take their minor accomplishments, or bills they had little part in if at all, and trumpet them as their crowning acheivments. I'm certainly not going to be swayed one way or the other by stories like this one because for every exxageration McCain/Palin make, Obama/Biden are matching them.

Ah, are politics not grand?
It looks like the ticket for the Rep. should be Palin - McCain since they are trying to bring Palin down, and not McCain. One would think a presidential nominee would focus on their opponent, not their opponents running mate. Or better yet, they would concentrate on why they would be a good pres. Unfortunately it looks like Obama and his camp have decided that they cannot compete with McCain, and thus have to try to bring down palin. I guess I know who's gonna win this one.

In your own words, Sarah Palin "Ordered her administration to seek less earmarks." That's a good thing right?
Then you say, "By the time Palin pulled the plug..." So she did pull the plug.
Then you say, "Ketchican's desire a better way to reach the airport but the 398 million bridge is not the answer." So this was her motivation for stopping it.
Then you say director Lois Epstein said, "It's true that Palin formally put an end to the project." We know that already.
Then you say that spokesman Keith Ashdown said, "She put the final stake in the peoject." So I guess that means she ended the project.
Now if she went ahead with the project would you have spread the blame across the board to Democrats who voted for it. I think not, because you would have wanted to really skewer her. But you sure don't want to give her all the credit.
Well, at least you can say you gave it your best shot when you check into Obama Headquarters today.

Is THAT the best YOU can do? Your link actually proves the fact that it was Congress (not Palin) that killed the bridge. Even though she NOW says that she killed it, that said "thanks, but no thanks", she actually campaigned for the bridge (even wearing a "Nowhere Alaska" shirt pushing for the bridge) until it was clear that it wasn't going to get funded. So, she lied.
She claims she's against earmarks, but in fact she's been very much FOR earmarks (for them until she was against them, that is). She hired Ted Stevens' lobbyist to get $27 Million in earmarks as mayor of Wasilla. She charged the State over $16K for a private cook - yes, the very same cook she said she "fired". Again, a lie. For someone against earmarks and the bridge, it's amazing how much she was "for it before she was against it".
Just what we need in the White House, 4 more years of a lying, defecit increasing, bible-banging whacko. Thanks, but no thanks.

I think the strategy on the bridge to nowhere can be found in German quote from a few years back:
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
- - - Joseph Goebbels
and
"the most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”
- - -Joseph Goebbels

Funny thing about earmarks. We elect people to go to Washington and do good for us, get us money to fix roads and bridges, and other projects. Then people scream and yell about all of the earmarks that THEY brought back to their districts. But if they did not get the earmarks they would not be re-elected because they did not do their job.
It is a mean and vicious circle. The question should be: 'Did the earmarks go to better the people in their districts or did it get lost in a non-productive waste?' If it was waste and someone was able to get the earmark voided and/or stopped the waste then they should get some credit for it, and the requestor should be held responsible for trying to waste our money.

Is those kinds of errors in judgement that cause one to think twice and even three times, when considering a vote, for the McCain-Palin ticket, in November !! Then, later, God changed his mind, and told St. Sarah that the Bridge was an abomination in his eyes, and that she should fight the evil doers who were for it. She replied "Let it be written. Let it be done."
Far be it from lowly sinners like us to question God's will as expressed by his one true Prophet, St. Sarah of the Blessed Pipeline. Her words have the force of Holy Law. Her words define reality. She is pure and infallible in all things. Bless us St. Sarah with your Holy Wisdom and lead us in God's true path of infrastructrure spending. Amen.

JRMAC,
No matter how you try to sugar coat it; it is a lie! Why embellish on a statement and try to make people think you really did sell the jet on eBay? Just like she said she did not need the cook and the children really miss her. Well, here's another news flash! Her chef, Stefani Marnon was not fired as the chef only her services were not used from day-to-day. http://community.adn.com/adn/node/108600
Also, Stefani Marnon held jobs in different capacities in the Alaskan state government. As soon as I find that link from the report on Anderson Cooper (CNN) I'll post it here.
I guess Palin is the great white hope!
LIES! LIES! LIES! and more LIES to come.

What are the similarities between Sara Palin and a pit bull?
1. Neither cares about the environment, nor understands science.
2. Neither knows anything about foreign policy or has any experience in foreign affairs.
3. Both listen to their masters.
4. Neither attended a college for more than a year
5. Both attack innocent victims.

Democrats need to do in Chicago what the news libs are doing in Alaska. Google Chicago Style Politics and read facts, and I do mean facts about Obama. Sarah has more experience than he does and she did not, like Obama did, get a $300,000 plus ear mark raise for her spouse. He has not done what he said he did in Springfield. His handlers put his name on legislation to give him his "record". He walked all over the black politicians of the south side and the used his knowledge and connections to push others out of the way in true Daly style. The more I read the more I ran from voting for him. He is not just the same old politician from chicago he is the Daly machine and Sorros machine puppet. I did the research that the press should do for us. The are lazy and should all be fired for not doing their jobs. Oh yes go vote for the great Plagerizer you socialist. We looked up the ten points of Communism. Right out of Obamas platform. Whose money is behind him???? As and independent I was not for McCain but after looking through Chicago papers, archives and the congressional reports on ear marks I will never vote for the do nothing puppet from Chicago.

When John McCain articulated his no-nonsense pro-life stance, he stood head and shoulders above the competition. McCain delivered. McCain also delivered a pro-life running mate, who puts her money where her mouth is. That these two will standup and call a spade a spade is truly electrifying. They're standing up; I get it. Democrats' Achilles heel: “Most Democrats/Liberals here have nothing in common and dislike the very people they rely on to get them elected.” On a lighter note, Global Warming is an apparent hoax. The snowmelt seems to have been caused by Sarah Palin's proximity to the polar region. The woman is on fire. Here’s Jan & Dean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX7X4FovYRA&NR=1 And, I got your political pork; right here: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Bruce:
You are consistent; you never accept facts. Palin supported the bridge when running for Governor and then it became a scandal she opposed it. The fact is she kept the money (over 300 million) for other Alaskan projects. And then the rest of the country subsidizes Alaskans by overpaying for gas and the windfall goes to the Alaskans. That might be OK but why are we paying for these projects when they have all the extra money.
Also Bruce I guess you have proof that Frank James is a n Obama surrogate-you keep saying this, now please where's the beef on your whine?
