Like everything in this deeply polarized nation, how one views today's Washington Post story that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin put in for a taxpayer-funded per diem payments, even when she was at home, depends on which party one is supporting.

As is widely known by now, the Post had a story today that reported that Palin received per diem payments even when she was staying at her home in little old Wasilla. Making matters even more interesting, Palin also put in for her family members' traveling expenses.

At first blush, it seems a little odd since per diems are normally paid to employees who are traveling on official business.

None of this was illegal and if taxpayers in Alaska aren't up in arms, the question could be raised why should anybody else be?

Conservatives have pooh-poohed the Post story. Here's the better part of a posting by Dan McLaughlin on RedState.org:

The whole thing gets even more hilarious when you realize that Palin's charging less than $60 for trips that would be, if you could drive them, eighteen hours long, between home in Wasilla and work in Juneau. And that is before you consider, as Leon Wolf points out, that you can't get from Wasilla to Juneau by driving at all - you have to take the ferry.

One wonders what Joe Biden is charging taxpayers for taking Amtrak back and forth almost every day for a two hour trip between Wilmington DE and Washington DC.

Read David Bernstein's full post, quoted above, for the whole of the hilarity, and John Miller for more.

I know they keep trying to throw stuff at her to see what sticks, but OMG, the Governor of a state asked for a $60 per diem she was legally entitled to, and asked for it less often than she could've, and has spent 80% less on personal travel than her predecessor! Scandalous!

This was Kos's take on his namesake, DailyKos:

At first I was wondering, "why didn't I try that at my old job, demanding travel pay when staying at my own place?" Then I realized why -- it would've been a scam, and I would've been fired. Funny how that "accountability" thing doesn't seem to operate when a politician is elected to high office.

Now to be fair, Palin only made $125,000 a year, or 1/3rd of a Cindy McCain dress. That is really poor; at least $4.875 million away from middle class. And don't forget she "chose life", so who cares if she has the ethics of a sewer rat?

Instead of passing judgment on Palin, we should just be thankful it wasn't John McCain billing the state of Alaska to live at his home(s). He would've bankrupted the state.

Hard to tell how this per diem and travel expenses story will play out. Again, the only predictable thing is that this is yet another issue on which the right and left won't agree.

This ad hominem, baseless attack brought to you by Obama Spokesman Frank James. Where was he when Obama was securing a $1 million earmark for his wife's employer? And when Michelle Obama got a 200% raise after the U of C hospital got that money? But he's ALL OVER these per diems.

More Bush-McCan Republican gobble-dee-gook, concerning the Governor of Alaska. Maybe, it is time for her to withdraw her name from the Republican ticket, it is too greedy-heavy !! Between Senator McCain's reputation for questionable conduct and Governor Palin's state's sponsored expense account, they could buy a second private jet for their campaign !! Wait a second, why don't they see if they can buy back that jet, Governor Palin said she sold on e-bay. She probably could get it for a song and a dance !! Ah, those Bush-McCain Republicans, they are so inept and people are still considering, voting for them !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Yet ANOTHER swing and a miss for Obama Spokesman Frank James. What Palin spent was less than $60 a day ($54) and was 80% less than her predecessor's per diem.
Palin (a) billed the state for most expenses allowed by law, including per diem when she stayed in her own home (her "duty station" was the state capitol of Juneau) in Wasilla; (b) didn't bill the state for other expenses, when she could have done so lawfully, such as per diems for her children; and (c) spent a lot less money on expenses than did her predecessor, especially on travel and by ridding herself of the state's personal chef.

The Post doesn't do the math for us, but the total per diem claimed was $16,951 divided divided by 312 days, or $54.33 per day (the per diem is $60, so there were some partial days).

Also, the article headline, "Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home," and some related content, is very misleading. A glance at the expense report reproduced on the Post's website makes it clear that she requested per diem for her daily expenses, but not for lodging, and that she apparently wrote "lodging--own home" only to explain why she wasn't requesting hotel expenses. One almost wonders whether the author of the story understands what a "per diem" is; the story notes that Palin rarely charged the state for meals when in Wasilla and Anchorage, but of course she didn't, because she instead just asked for the per diem!

Newsweek's factcheck.org has a nice summation of the latest pack of lies the left is peddling about Governor Palin. Leftists like Frank James and Soledad O'Brien obviously are scared stiff of Palin because they're throwing the kitchen sink at her just hoping that one of their smears sticks.

I love Sarah palin. She spent a lot les on per diems than most Mass ols. I love her and I am a Democrat

Jeff,
You would support your conservative buddies no matter what they do.
The fact is Palin is just another politician. Her gleam is wearing off quickly.

Palin claims to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars, an agent of change, and pure. She made the choice to live in Wasilla instead of Juneau. Would these travel expenses be necessary if she and her family occupied the governors home? Politicians always want it both ways.

Jeff,

If McCain only met Palin once, what do you know about her? Are you suggesting that no one vet her? Ideologues, like yourself, are a curious bunch. Don't you even want to know who may be steering the Titanic should old man McCain leave this earth prematurely?

I saw one estimate the Joe Biden's daily commute costs the taxpayers $200 per day.

The Swamp reporters must have received orders from Obama to avoid this topic.

WTG Democrats just keep reminding me of why I left the party. They are so gracious to point out that Sarah Palin has saved her state money over the past two governors, 1 Republican and 1 Democrat. Obama seems to be losing control and attacking the lady who has done more for change than the other 3 combined. Attacks coming from the Obama camp are pure sexist and the dirt they are trying to sling washes way to show a true candidate for change. The Obama camp is desperate firing off 'piggish' jokes and should be ashamed. This is one former Democratic supporter who will remain independent but will vote for real change when I cast my vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. Thanks again Obama for showing me that the Democratic leadership really does not care about America. And even today the Pelosi gang is 'flipping' on off-shore drilling. Hmmm maybe because someone had to explain it to her that the PEOPLE want lower prices in the future. Nancy, you have some 'splaining to do! Well, it’s time to mail one of my wife’s lipsticks to Obama HQ now, because Obama has shown himself to be the pig, a male-chauvinist pig.

I don't recall liberals getting all steamed up about Hillary's per diem expenses when she took her child on a trip around the world right before they got off the taxpayers dime. I believe that cost millions what with Air Force One and all the Secret Service... But of course there is no bias here, it's all principle and reason.

This whole issue is irrelevant. We should be discussing the real issue which is: SHE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE VICE PRESIDENT....N-O-T Q-U-A-L-I-F-I-E-D.
