Sarah Palin raised taxes.
For a sports complex in hometown Wasilla, Alaska.
And the Republican nominee for vice president, part of a ticket vowing to avert new taxes, made the case for the tax-hike as a matter of preventative spending - better they build a sports palace and kids come play in it than paying the price of juvenile justice for those without a place to play.
Taxation and government spending as an antidote to social ills? Sound familiar?
So reports CBS News' Laura Strickler at CBSnews.com.
Palin's "lasting legacy'' as mayor of Wasilla, Strickler reports, "is a gleaming sports complex with an indoor soccer field, running track and of course, a hockey rink. With heated seats.
In Palin's recent convention speech, she criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama for wanting to raise taxes, Strickler notes. Pointing to her sister and husband who are small business owners in Alaska, she asked: "How are they going to be any better off if taxes go up?"
But it took a tax increase to raise the village hockey rink. Palin financed it with a special referendum raising the local sales tax by 25 percent. City Hall records show the referendum passed by 20 votes. CBS News also reports on 86 pages of city council documents showing that Palin justified the taxe increase in part because the private sector had not stepped in to fill the gap.
But "her most striking argument for raising taxes is one you might not expect from a fiscal conservative,'' Strickler reports: Among the documents an email from Palin to department heads in January 2001:
"As I look at the money that government [spends] on projects, programs, personnel and facilities to 'fix' societies ills and I realize that it's [be]come more politically correct and accepted for government to throw money towards 'after-the-fact [services]', instead of preventive measures that a community could take to support and promote...family oriented, positive, constructive activities and lifestyles. Even on the local level we [spend] hundreds of thousands of dollars on our Police Dept., Youth Court, DARE Program, etc... 'after the fact' fixes for juvenile problems. We are in a position to help.''

Comments
The liberal media will never cease to try to trash and impugn Gov. Palin's integrity. The FACT is that this sports complex has been a tremendous revenue stream for the community. This has made the community more money by way of memberships and participation in clinics and excercise programs. A fact the liberal liars in the media will never ever report.

Why would anyone build an "indoor" facility w / heated seats in Alaska. How long did it take Ms. Strickler to come up with this.
The villification of Sarah Palin, as postured out by the vast Left-wing Media that won't look into, or ask, the great Obama a damn thing. Good stuff, nothing but the good stuff.

That sounds like that huge convention hall/hotel/whatever else that was built where my parents live, in a town much larger than Wasilla. It's empty now.
BTW, thanks so much GOP, for picking this one. Now I can't watch "King of the Hill" because I see Peggy but I think Sarah. I love Peggy Hill, but I don't want her to be Vice President.

Great story!
First place I've seen it.

WOW! Nice Spin!
"Sarah Palin raised taxes."
AN honest byline would be..
Sarah Palin demonstrated rarely observed leadership as mayor by actually asking her constituents how they would like to spend some of the tax money that has been collected. They agreed to raise taxes to fund the project.
So now a community VOLUNTEERS with their votes, to pass a referendum to fund a hockey rink that everyone in the community can use. And this equals the messiahs robin hood complex of raising taxes without any referendum?
Following this logic- should the the golden child be elected, I will expect him to hold off on implementing any new fed programs until he can get everyones vote on whether or not we want this new spending...

Sarah loves pork more than mooseburgers.

Since when have conservatives ever said that no one must ever pay taxes? Anyone who believes that is woefully ignorant. The difference between conservatives and liberals on taxes comes down to a) how much we are willing to pay, b) for what purposes the money will be used and c) whether we consider it our "patriotic duty" to pay more than we believe is justified. Palin, as mayor, acted in what she believed to be the best interests of her community – and the community ratified that belief in a referendum. The city then raised the sales tax to back a bond issue to raise the revenue to build the athletic complex. The city was then sued by land owners who felt the city should pay more. All this story demonstrates is that Washington journalists really lack any understanding of how local government actually works. They probably graduated from "elite" journalism schools and then went right to work for the Tribune or some other large news organization without first gaining any sort of real world experience. They think they know it all, but in reality they are woefully disconnected from the reality that all of us pathetic Joe Six Packs face out here in the Hinterlands on a daily basis. Get out of DC once in a while (and covering a presidential campaign swing through New Hampshire or Pennsylvania doesn't count). It would do you some good.

heartburn, since when is a referendum "Rare leadership"? They happen all the time. She didn't invent them.
But I forget, She is perfect. All good on earth flows from her. She is doing God's will at all times. Forgive my blasphemy. I will not further question St. Sarah of the Blessed and Holy Pipeline.

Hey, it's not fair to actually look at what Sarah Palin did in the past! We should just accept whatever she says as the full and complete truth! How dare anyone even imply that perthaps a decision she made was incorrect or inconsistant. Her record doesn't matter, just what she says her record is.Those meany, angry, leftist ,marxist, socialists should just admit that she is absolutely perfect.
Sarah Palin is the greatest politician EVAH!

Lou-
Probably want to re read my post and the article- you are skewing the issue almost as badly as Strickler..
If you think it is at all typical for a city to use a referendum for projects like this-you are delusional. The typical route is to use taxpayer money and reward people that have helped you get elected with construction contracts to build..
Strickler is attempting to equate Obama's massive spending and big government, nanny state proposals with Palins "volunteer" taxpayer funding of a building in the community...
If you are proposing that diluting this down to " Palin raised taxes" is a fair representation of either what actually happened, or as anything close to what the annointed one has planned... then you either have a big problem with relatively simple concepts or are just being dishonest.

Heartburn-
Referendums like that happen all the time. I myself have worked on over $100 million dollars of public recreation facilities in the past 10 years, all of which involved a referendum. Park Districts here in the State of Illinois finance almost all of their Recreational facilities by that method.
Wauconda, Barrington, Hazel Crest, Cary, Lisle, are just a small selection of the communities in the State of Illinois that have referenda for recreational or park facilities before the voters this year.
St. Sarah did nothing special. All she did is show up your ignorance of how things really work at the municipal level. I know the glow from St. Sarah's halo is blinding, but open your eyes and look around before you call others delusional.

Lou- So is what Palin did in Wasilla a fair comparison to federal spending and Obamas proposed tax increases or not- (the article equates them)?
Or to be clearer- when can we expect to see the voter referendum to approve Obamas health care plan?
Posted by: heartburn | September 9, 2008 6:35 PM
But it took a tax increase to raise the village hockey rink. Palin financed it with a special referendum raising the local sales tax by 25 percent.
---------------
"All government services are paid for by 2 percent sales tax, said Casey Reynolds, the city's former economic development planner. There's no state sales tax. Numerous subdivisions outside city limits want to be annexed." ~ Fort Mills Times (Wasilla Ak)
---------------
You Lynch Mob Leftists that have Sarah Palin as Target No. 1 need to move on to the next over-played story of deceipt. I am sure that there are plenty more. If the tax rate is now only 2 frickin' percent, then it had to have been 1.6 frickin' percent before Sarah Palin's referendum increased it. That's 1.6 cents on the damn dollar raised to an even 2 cents on the damn dollar. By democrat standards that's one pathetic tax increase, and too, the citizens of Wasilla can go and see what this massive increase has built that is available for the use of the ENTIRE community.
Ms. Strickler seemed to have failed to capture any of these kind of sordid details in her media game of villifying the Republican.
If I were a democrat, I would take all of my showers in 160 degree Fahrenheit water using only Lava soap with lots of volcanic pumice. There is nothing that could ever get some of you clean, including prayer.

Heartburn-
No it's not a fair comparison at all. I never said it was. I just pointed out your mischaracterization that this referendum was some sort of "Rare leadership" on Pain's part. It wasn't. It's standard practice at the municipal level.
Are you claiming that a McCain/Palin administration will hold a referendum on the increased military spending they propose? Are you saying that this is precedent for how St. Sarah will govern at the Federal level?

Good - we agree..
The difference is that you were willing to let the articles misrepresentaiton stand unchallenged- and instead challenge my response.
My proposed new byline to the story was meant to show the absurdity of the "Palin raised taxes" original byline...
"rare leadership " is equally absurd.
My characterization was meant to underscore how, in your words relating to referendums "It's standard practice at the municipal level." this story was worth the time to write, publish and then be rehashed in this blog.
Spinning a pretty mundane project , that used normal funding process, and that a majority of the community agreed to pay for into "Palin raised taxes"in order to attack Palins credibility is just plain dishonest...and, it appears had your support, despite your understanding that it was not being characterized accurately again your words;
(" But I forget, She is perfect. All good on earth flows from her. She is doing God's will at all times. Forgive my blasphemy. I will not further question St. Sarah of the Blessed and Holy Pipeline"
++++++++
No I do not expect to see any referendums coming down from mount federal (DEM or REP) to ask us ,
" the teaming masses" how we would like our money to be spent.

"At the time, with the information she had, [Ms. Palin] made the right decision," Mr. Leonard said. "But you know what? Litigation happens."
This is the same thinking that Bush used to justify the Iraq War. We do not need more of this failed thinking.

heartburn- Yeah, right. Sorry bud, not buying. If you wouldn't have gone on to say that this isn't the way these things are usually financed, I might have believed it. But the honest truth is you did think that she showed rare leadership and had done something different. You were blinded by the glow of her halo. Glad I could help show you a bit about what's behind the curtain. Look at what she's really done, not just the hype and adulation.
