Chicago radio station WGN-AM is again coming under attack from the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama for offering airtime to a controversial author.
It is the second time in recent weeks the station has been the target of an "Obama Action Wire" alert to supporters of the Illinois Democrat.
Monday night's target was David Freddoso, who the campaign said was scheduled to be on the station from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Chicago time.
"The author of the latest anti-Barack hit book is appearing on WGN Radio in the Chicagoland market tonight, and your help is urgently needed to make sure his baseless lies don't gain credibility," an e-mail sent Monday evening to Obama supporters reads.
"David Freddoso has made a career off dishonest, extreme hate mongering," the message said. "And WGN apparently thinks this card-carrying member of the right-wing smear machine needs a bigger platform for his lies and smears about Barack Obama -- on the public airwaves."
The Tribune-owned station was flooded with calls and e-mails about an hour before an Aug. 27 interview with Stanley Kurtz, a conservative writer who examined Obama's ties to former 1960s radical William Ayers.
A WGN producer said Monday night's response was about the same as when Kurtz was on the station.

Here we go again - the totalitarian Obama brigade out to quash any dissenting opinion. I'm wondering, however, how long the Swamp will keep today's breaking story out about Obama secretly negotiating with the Iraqi government to prolong the war in Iraq so he can score political points. Just to think, I once admired a man that I now consider a sociopath and a traitor. Bye Barry - you belong behind bars now. I hope those who you caused to be unnecessarily killed and wounded in Iraq haunt you for the rest of your days.

"If we're going to ask questions about, you know, who has been promulgating negative ads that are completely unrelated to the issues at hand, I think I win that contest pretty handily," Obama said.

WGN and the Tribune company should be ashamed of itself...they should take Chicago off their name.
Posted by: K-Los | September 15, 2008 10:53 PM
It is called freedom of speech. I think that is something that Obama doesn't recognize which frankly, scares me. All of the left-wing hate mongering is OK, but as soon as something is said against Obama, they are out if full force trying to shut people up. Perhaps his campaign should be reminded that we are not a socialist or communist society.

I have no clue what WGN is doing. Chicago has to be the most liberal, Obama town in the country. May be they get listners in texas somewhere.

That's the fascist tactic of shutting up the voices of the opposition through phisical intimidation! Where has the moral high ground of Obama's campaign gone?
Posted by: Charles | September 15, 2008 11:03 PM
This isn't a first amendment issue after all since its not the gov't taking away Mr Freddoso's right to free speech. This is just another bunch of left-wing loons that will shout down anyone that disagrees with their positions. Just like Obama's little children followers practice on their college campuses.
If you can't win on facts, just scream the loudest.
Posted by: Terry | September 15, 2008 11:03 PM
Do you mean, Mr. McCormick, WGN, currently owned by the Tribune, the Midwest voice of the Republican Party? Why is this such a surprise?
Posted by: Rev. William Hayashi | September 15, 2008 11:08 PM
This extreme reaction to opposing viewpoints - seeking to quash their expression - is a manifestation of an authoritarian impulse extremely dangerous to a democratic society. The ability to coerce people into submission rather than exercise choice in a non-coercive environment - such as a secret-ballot election - is another. Beware those who think their truth is the only truth.

I am voting for Obama, but this kind of attempt to censor free press is counterproductive to the Obama campaign. Just like the radical left smear of Sarah Palin, we have extreme right smears on Obama.
Politics in America, people. Hitler limited the press; America should not.
Posted by: Liz | September 15, 2008 11:13 PM
Wow! There is not a lot of fact here, and I have never heard of Mr. Freddoso. However, if WGN wants to interview a book author, it seems they should not be censored out of doing it. I will not be tuning in, but I don't want anybody's campaign preventing access to people based upon their disfavor with their political candidate. I believe that time slot is the Milt Rosenberg show, and I think he can be trusted with his guest selection.
Posted by: Joe Nowosielski | September 15, 2008 11:13 PM
That's Obama and his insidious campaign for you. ANY message that doesn't fawn all over him MUST be a part of the "right wing smear machine" and not only must be criticized but must be silenced outright. Still standing with Hugo Chavez, eh, Barack? Shocking how someone who is so shamefully against the freedom of speech should be so close to the white house.

John Wilson: Freddoso's lies begin on the very first page of his book (repeated on the back cover) when he proclaims that Obama is "the least experienced politician in at least one hundred years to obtain a major party nomination for President...."(ix) Freddoso seems to be conveniently forgetting that George W. Bush in 2000 had served only six years as governor, far fewer years of experience as an elected public official than Obama's 12 years of experience (eight as state senator, four as US senator). Obama's experience in politics also exceeds that of Ronald Reagan (eight years as governor), Jimmy Carter (four years in state senate, four years as governor), Dwight Eisenhower (no political experience), Harry Truman (10 years as US senator, one year as vice president), Herbert Hoover (eight years as Secretary of Commerce), Woodrow Wilson (two years as governor), and William Howard Taft (four years as Secretary of War, two years as Solicitor General). Compared to 17 presidents in the past century, Obama has more political experience than eight of them, and less experience than eight of them (he's tied with Warren Harding).

I'm shocked as well as appalled. I didn't that WGN Radio allows people on the show who are dishonest and promote hatred. I look at the WGN TV news every night and from time to time listen to your radio station. I will not listen to the station anymore. I'm a person who believes in being fair to everyone. It's obvious that you people don't want change in our society.

Can this be an attempt at censorship of free speech.
Is this what Senator Obama means by "change"?
It's interesting that in all their efforts there were no statements countering what they claim this gentleman believes, just lambast and fog.

What ever happened to freedom of the press? Just because one of the parties in the upcoming election is displeased with what the station airs. If you have a complaint about it or disagree with it pay for the time to refute it on the air.

The Obama campaign doesn't want a free and open discussion with anyone that wants to talk about Obama's ties to domestic terrorist William Ayers, and the Annenburg Challenge or Woods Fund.
It's almost fascist how Obamas band of messianic followers jump on queue.

Senator Obama wants to stifle critcism. Where have we seen this over and over down through the years? The Democratic Party presidential nominee first of all snubbed the most qualified vice presidential candidate, female Senator Hillary Clinton. Now he tries to stifle those who have a different opinion about his qualifications. All you Generation Xers who are following this Pied Piper from Hyde Park beware of what is happening to our Party!

Posted by: JB | September 16, 2008 12:12 AM
There is a totalitarian tinge to the Obama campaign that is quite unattractive; a combination of Chicago Machine thuggery and far left William Ayers style Thought Enforcement. I can understand the campaign's nervousness: Obama's background has not been carefully reviewed by media--who paid for those multiple visits to Pakistan? What was Obama's LSAT score? Can we see the syllabus/reading list of the courses he taught at the U of Chicago? Why all the largesse from Fannie Mac and Fannie Mae? (Only Senator Dodd received more in campaign donations. ) There is so much we don't know. One has the impression journalists have not even read Obama's books. The first one, especially, leaves a multitude of questions that should be answered by any major presidential candidate.

Typical.

What is Mr. Freddoso saying that justifies the Obama attack? Your news piece uses phrases like "his baseless lies don't gain credibility . . . EVERYTHING TRIBUNE PRINTS IS A LIE but do not give an example.

Hmm, lets see, Milt Rosenburg lets yet another discredited propaganda artist lie and smear Senator Obama for 2 hours (for at least the second time), but its THE STATION that's under attack? Poor, poor WGN, I feel so sorry for you!
Here's a little hint, Mr. Roseburg: Book some guests that can offer an honest debate instead of ones that just distribute lies, and you won't have all these objections! Funny thing, the public seems to like it better when THE TRUTH is told on the public airwaves.

How can a guy raise historical amounts of money for a campaign -- hundred of millions of dollars -- beat a former president's wife in a large field of candidates during primaries; and find himself behind in polls against a guy who was on 'life support' six months ago???? Are the voters telling us something about their measure of Obama? Has he wasted the money? Can he just not manage the money? Or, is it his youth and inexperience now beginning to show up? He best not play around with freedoms of speech and press!!

I keep wondering what does Obama have to hide that he tries to do this again, especially in Chicago where it's obvious that he will win. Obama needs to grow up, does he think if he gets in the Oval that he won't be criticized? If he thinks that he's more delusional than I thought. He wants the big stage, but he wants it on his terms, meanwhile everyone else is free game. This guy is not ready for the big show.

Intimidation, remove freedom of expression, not to let others express their views, etc. This is the change that offers Obama and his people, and we can not allow it.
It's better to be near a person familiar (like McCain) that have a person unknown (as Obama) to become the President.

Our family listened to Extension 720 when I was a child. But beginning with the Clinton years I found it more and more difficult to bear. The host has a negative obsession with "William Jefferson Clinton" (as he refers to him), with declining populations in Europe, with the decline of cultural awareness (he has a quiz); now he apparently has a negative obsession with Obama. I can't listen any longer and I urge others to follow my example. I am not surprised that he had this guest. He will likely have a counter guest who will be relatively inarticulate and unimpressive.
I find this sad.

Dissenting comments are not the problem. The truth is, or lack thereof. If you're going to have someone who claims what they are saying is correct, why not complement that with the counter argument? That's fair. In many cases, the media isn't inpartial. They are more devisive and we don't demand a higher standard.

PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL CHOICES
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're 'exotic, different.'
Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, and its a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer,
become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review,
create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters,
spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor,
spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people,
become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee,
spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13
million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign
Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees,
you don't have any real leadership experience.
If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years
on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less
than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000
people, then you're qualified to become the country's second
highest ranking executive.
If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters,
all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress,
and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month,
you're a Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including
the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only,
with no other option in sex education in your state's school system
while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm
to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family,
your family's values don't represent America's.
If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction
and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and
once was a member of a group that advocated: the secession of Alaska from the USA,
your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.

For all the foaming-at-the-mouth comments about free speech, it's really obvious that the posters here don't understand what free speech is. Obama is not using the government to quash their first amendment rights. He's calling on his supporters to exercise their right to free speech and protest what he percieves as lies. He has filed no legal injuction and taken no government action, so the claims of Facism are a bit overblown. Does this mean every time you disagree with someone else, you should simply shut up and "hope" the truth is heard somehow? Who will counter it if not you? Those callers flooding WGN's lines all deserve to be heard also.

Mike G Stated: " Obama's 12 years of experience (eight as state senator, four as US senator). "
You shouldn't accuse others of being dishonest by being dishonest yourself. Obama has NOT been a US Senator for 4 years. He spent less than 175 days in the Senate, authoring ZERO legislation before he left to start running for President. For you to say that Obama has more experience than a person who was a Governor of states the size of Texas or California for 6 or 8 years is just ridiculous.

The Intellectual Elite's, which are flocking around BO seem to be taking over the fanaticism that so many tag to the religious right.

Why is Obama hiding his medical records? Is it because it says that he was circumcized by an Islamic sheikh?
I can believe that Obama converted to Christianity when he was older, but his insistence that he has nothing to do with Islam is insulting to Christians, Jews AND Muslims. He should just come clean with the truth, for a change.

What's the surprise? The Tribune has always supported extremists: George W. Bush the worst president in the history of this country and maybe in the world. Why wouldn't they allow an extremist, right-wing, nutcase on their free radio airtime? Maybe if the Tribune, formerly "The Worlds Greatest Newspaper", has now slipped into New York Daily News level of gutter journalism. Why not have the WGN commentators read passages from the "Elders of Zionism" as quotes from Obama? Hopefully, Zell wil sell WGN and the Tribune to Ruppert and the FX news team.

If these are untrue and lies, then why won't Senator Obama debate them?
And by the way, why does he always require a telepromter? To keep the "facts" straight or to remember his coachs' made up stories?

Sounds like one part of Chicago has its act together. Obama, former community Ogranzizer helped the schools so much in Chicago he sent his to private schools. He was made a front man for the Terrorist Professor Ayres to supposedly help the schools. He was a front man for the bigoted and racist church in Chicago.
Obviously, Obama does not want this background info out. So, folks there is no need for continued free speech.

This is not a matter of censorship, but has everything to do with the republican propaganda machine that is talk radio. Station after station, all across the country, echoing the same propaganda. Tell me when WGN interviews Todd Palin's past business partner.

Obama = coward. Afraid to have people expose the truth about this elusive creation of the socialist left. Where are the people from his past? They aren't around! This cowardly response from the same guy who claimed (in an ABC news interview) to have registered for slective service right after graduating from high school in 1989. Problem, there was no selective service registration in 1979. It had been suspended since 1975, until another not-so-memorable democrat - Jimmy Carter started it again in response to Russian aggression in Afghanistan. So, Obama lied. He said he thought of joining the military when signing up for selective service but the world was at peace. Either way he lied, he either got the year wrong and was a coward because the world was not at peace when the selective seervice resumed in 1980, or he lied about wanting to join the military. This man will say anything, to anyone who is gullible enough to believe and too infatuated to challenge him. Coward then, coward now!.

Unless I'm missing something here,or the author omitted something, there's no censorship stated or impliled in the email from the Obama camp.
"And your help is urgently needed to make sure his baseless lies don't gain credibility," clearly states that the aim is to prevent his lies from gaining credibility--that is making sure the opposing viewpoints are stated loud and clear. By the way, my conservative friends, that is just another aspect of our freedom of speech, by the way. The right to protest.

Posted by: Jerry | September 16, 2008 9:55 AM
This campaign has a habit of attempting to suppress free speech. I find it curious that one who would be President would display this particular attribute prior to election. It makes one suspect that if elected, freedoms would disappear quite rapidly. The radio stations should continue with their work and ignore the attempted censorship.
Posted by: Annie | September 16, 2008 9:55 AM
No, he is not trying to stop freedom of speech. Most of you are missing the point, you all say that he is taking away the freedom of speech from this man but he isn't. The radio station has the right to have this guy on but Obama has the right to defend or set the records staright about what is being said about him. Sounds like freedom of speech for both sides to me. So stop being one tracked minded, that's why the USA is in the situation it is today!

The liberal media hates Palin because she is an honest, hardworking woman who frightens the democrats. They try desperately to scare us with lies about Palin all the while trying to keep the facts about Obambi off the airways.
Remember this is what the Democrats led by Pelosi and Reid want to do with "The Fairness Doctrine" another Fascist ploy against free speech. The Dems couldn't compete on talk radio , odd how Franken came across,so they will put rules up that compel the talk radio shows to air people who otherwise cannot get on the air because they are so disgusting. I don't like it when Obama wants to silence people. This is so typical of the left. Look at what happened at Columbia University when someone from the right appears to speak, they physically attack them and shout them down. I am very worried that the Democrats put someone up who wants to attack free speach. They've taken over most of the media, which I like to call the Democratic media, and all day and night we hear horrible things being said about Republicans. Why isn't Obama crying about that?

Senator Obama's campaign is simply practicing the Bill Clinton tactic of, "Your opponent can't talk about you while your fist is in his mouth." It is a tactic designed to shut up any and all criticism of the candidate. Since it worked for Clinton, every campaign uses this tactic to some degree.
The answer to WGN or any other radio station's guests or viewpoint is to point out the items you believe to be incorrect and if the misstatements continue refuse to listen to the station or do business with their advertisers. A little economic hardship goes a long way. It isn't as much fun as shouting down your opponents, but it is a lot more effective.

It makes me sick to see that someone has issues and questions Obama's past is getting the old "brown shirt" treatment. (ala, 1930's Germany)

People need to learn the definition of censorship. If a large group of people disagree with what a commercial enterprise is doing, and voice their opinion to that enterprise to stop it, that is NOT censorship.
Frankly, I'd like to see a little more "personal responsibility" in the media by not allowing lies by any politician or their minions to go unchecked. I say if you're a commercial media outlet and you have someone on the air who makes false or misleading statements, and you don't correct them publicly within 24hrs, you should be subject to a large fine.

Obama doesn't like being criticized in his own town. However, there is a reason leftist radio doesn't work. Their ideas don't pass any kind of scrutiny. Just look at Obama's economic plan. Raise taxes on upper income earners who already pay 40% and cut a check a $300 check to everyone else. 40% of those people don't pay taxes anyways! Income re-distribution with the Government forcing you to pay and Obama calls it "neighborly".
I'm not big on McCain. However, Obama's economic policy was written by someone in kindergarten. It is a short term solution to a problem that is rooted in a tax code that fundamentally punishes achievement. Obama's answer is to add to it? Not on my watch.

Does MG know that some of those individuals he mentioned were governors who actually had to take a stand on issues, both non and controversial? How can Obama have more experience than Ronald Regan or George W. Bush? That is laughable to say the least. They could not hide behind their "present" votes as governor. How can a lawmaker provide any justification for voting present? Either you vote for a bill or you do not. End of story. If you do not like amendments to a bill, fight and/or change the rules to keep non-relevant amendments from being attached to bills. Politicians should start working for the people instead of writing memoirs to try to get themselves elected. Who writes a memoir at 40 anyway? You have to really love yourself. Seems a bit narcissistic to me.

Liberals claim to be all about our rights and freedom, but that's not the case. They don't want to be bothered with God, so religious rights are out for anyone who acknowledges a creator. They don't want anyone to criticize their people, so freedom of speech is out for anyone opposing them. They want the choice of removing the consequences of their own unprotected sex, so the right to life for unborn babies is out.
The Democratic party is the party of ME. It's all about ME. It's what ME wants and what ME thinks. And anyone who disagrees is a racist! (They can't call people sexist any more because then they'd have to defend Palin...)

Obama's entire life has been to effect change through the ballot box. He is cold and calculating, applying lessons well taught by his Marxist mentors.
"The Audacity of Hope" (title taken from J. Wright) Obama describes himself as a "pure product" of the 1960's. Born in 1961??? He describes his mother as inspired by "tolerance, equality and standing up for the disadvantaged". Then he PUTS HIS OWN MOTHER DOWN saying her "understanding of the sixties was limited" ! I guess by 8 years old he had it all figured out.
Barack Husein Obama can not come clean about his name, let alone his core beliefs.

There is nothing in this that suggests suppression of free speech. It is a call-in talk show. Obama is asking his supporters to "Make sure his baseless lies don't gain credibility" by calling the show to point out problems with the book and expose the author's errors and bias.
If the author, and the radio station's host and call screeners can't handle a dissenting viewpoint, perhaps they're both in the wrong business.
Don't you think the right wing calls Air America to express their opinion as well?

Clearly, the O'Bamma campaign is signaling how their candidate will treat free speech issues should He be elected.
Among their goals:
1. Use localism, "Fairness Doctrine" and ascertainment to harass conservative talk radio.
2. Eliminate Christian radio on the basis that the airwaves are a public trust and therefore such programming is a violation of "separation of Church and state".
3. Intimidate, threaten with legal action and otherwise harm those who do not fall in line with His views.
His counterpart in Venezuala, Hugo Chavez is probably the kind of change agent O'Bamma will be.
Democrats and far-left extremists do not tolerate dissent. Let WGN spew its version of the truth. If you don't like their content, find another radio station -- or just buy a network and demand tax dollars to support it... Oh yeah, they already did -- it's called NPR.
Wanna bet O'Bamma will also want to ban the books people like Kurtz write? Sara Palin's inocuous questions about library procedures are nothing compared to O'Bama and his jack-booted Brownshirts once they get in office. I can see the mass book burnings, radio license forefitures and bible roundups already!

This attempt to censor is just a taste of what the Obama Democrats have planned for this country. And yes, Obama is the least experienced candidate for President in more than a hundred years. Using his spotty years in the Illinois Senate and the US Senate as examples of experience is laughable. Voting present is not experience; spending most of his years in the US Senate running for President is not experience. Wake up you Obama trolls. You're backing a potential disaster for yourself and the rest of this Country. Many other commenters have it right. As long as a smear is against the Republicans, everything is fair game. But if it's against the Democrats, especially Obama, then it's unfair, vile, and worthy of censorship. The major difference between a socialist country and a communist country is a dictator---I think Obama wants to lead us to the latter. He should be a great fear to Putin, Ahmadinejad, Chavez and the rest of them.

Obviously this is a touchy subject to the Obama supporters - if they were sure that he was squeaky clean they wouldn't worry about what the author of this book said.
That said, all you people decrying WGN for having this guy on, must not have listened to the program. I've never heard Mr. Rosenburg not give fair airplay to both sides of an issue, and this was true last night as well. For every point Mr. Freddeso made he gave equal air time for an Obama supporter, Dan Johnson-Weinberger, to air his side of the story.
It is quite evident that there are certain things that the Obama campaign does not want to get into the public eye. His supporters are trying their best to suppress anything negative about him. Anyone who just yells "lies" and then blindly believes without checking into Mr. Obama's connections themselves are really cheating their own experience as voters.

With honor comes a willingness to debate a challenge made concerning the quality of your character and the level of your veracity. Since Mr. Obama has yet to define his true character by allowing americans to know about his relationship with Ayers and his work with the Annenberg Challenge, among other past performance, of course he must quash anyone shining light on the issue. He MUST destroy the messenger. His supporters in this instance are practicing pure stalinism.

Obama is Stalin Jr. Remember this moment. He will silence all critics. If he wins, get ready for the gulags and secret police.
Posted by: RDO38 | September 16, 2008 10:23 AM
What the story above doesn't mention is that the program was a debate between Mr. Freddoso and Dan Johnson-Weinberger, president of Progressive Public Affairs and a prominenet Obama apologist. The debate was lively indeed, and Milt was scrupulous about giving Mr. Johnson-Weinberger just as much air-time as he accorded Mr. Freddoso.

What attack on WGN? An attack on WGN might be a campaign to boycott WGN advertisers or to boycott the station by tuning in to some other station or just turning off. But to disagree with someone who appears on a WGN talk show does not rise to the level of a significant attack on the station, itself - no matter how vituperative that disagreement gets. But, now I willl attack WGN - for sensationalizing trivia, a pastime we can ill afford in this election year when our attention should be on the important policy issues that our nation faces, not the trivia of personalities.

Woody Allen once said that half of the key to success is showing up. In Obama's case, at least to his faithful, showing up for his various government jobs equates to success. He certainly has not accomplished anything--nada, zip. Even his claim to be a guy who "reaches across the aisle" is baseless.
There is no major issue in this election on which Obama has not either reversed or sifnificantly modified his position. If you belief that core beliefs are important, you must believe that this guy either doesn't have any, or that he is a blatant liar.
That said, I think he's still the winner in November. Who knows, maybe he'll be as good as he thinks he is--let's pray that thus is so.

Note to Obama Campaign: Appear on Dr. Rosenberg's show and debate your critics. His long career has shown him to be a fair and thoughtful host and moderator. Oftentimes I agree with him other times I find him to be very liberal. But I always find him to be reasonable and respectful. The respondents to Kurtz's appearance spouted thoughtless talking points. I for one would love to hear a reasoned refutation to one of Sen. Obama's critics.

Present!
I heard George W. Bush is really behind all this to make Obama's followers look bad. It's really just a right-wing conspiracy!
Seriously though, is anyone really surprised? And it only gets worse if the Dems get a bigger majority AND the presidency: they'll be able to pass the Fairness Doctrine, which will allow them to determine what political talk is fair and unfair (hint: MSNBC will be determined fair and any right-wing talkers will be shutdown for being unfair). Obama08: Change we HAVE to believe in.
Posted by: Josh | September 16, 2008 10:26 AM
Obama is just like his godfather -- Ayers. He HATES truth, and he HATES capitalism. So he will do ANYTHING in his power to shut up opposing viewpoints. If he is elected President, he will impose silence on anyone who disagrees with him, should he find a way to do so.
Posted by: erick | September 16, 2008 10:26 AM
Everyone who actually "wants" to learn about Barrack Obama knows that he is desparately trying to marginalize the number of people from learning about his past. The guy is largely running on "hope" and "change". What a joke. But worse is this attempt to intimidate a radio station into silence. Come on Obama. If they were all lies PROVE IT! Threatening a radio station doesn't prove anything.

If this man is elected we will be able to watch the first amendment disappear. We must remember he is a socialist and a communist. A vote for obama is a vote for Marx and Lenin.

The Obama people are getting nervous at the rating dip so they are doing what all good socialists and marxists in politics do... censor opposing comments. In the last few weeks this democratic district leader is voting for McCain. Obama is really a Chicago political left wing hack with nothing new but a good line of jive.
Posted by: Bruce | September 16, 2008 10:28 AM
That hate-mongoring Fredesso...a little like our Reverend Wright, don't you think. At least Fredesso wrote it in a book. Wright preached it as if it were the word of God. As all before me have said, our rights to free speech only apply when the agree with BH Obama.
Posted by: JM | September 16, 2008 10:31 AM
Freedom of speech means we should be able to hear issues pro and con and make up our own mind about content of information presented. No way should it be one sided as the Obama camp would like us to believe. Let freedom ring.
Posted by: Bunny | September 16, 2008 10:31 AM
As a 30 year listener to WGN radio, I've always known that Milt Rosenberg was a staunch conservative but he seems to have gone over the line in 'promoting' and giving airtime to the far right wing, extreme, dishonest, rantings of the anti-Obama lunatics. The two shows in question have featured authors who are 'Roveian Wingnuts' not credible or honest purveyors of truth.
Posted by: Michael C. Luckenbach | September 16, 2008 10:32 AM
Attempting to impede free speech seems only to occur when that information is true and you don't want the people to know the truth. Lies without proof have no life. How, in America, have so many been fooled by this fool, Obama!
Posted by: John | September 16, 2008 10:32 AM
Obama's behavior is very revealing and frightening.
As when Kurtz was on the show, Obama and his staff cannot dispute the facts so instead he calls on a bunch of thugs to shout down anyone questioning him.
You'll notice that none of the callers will state what is incorrect, what lies are in the book. They just want the questioning of Obama stopped.
Unfortunately for Obama it only draws more attention to those questions and vividly demonstrates that he'll viciously smear anyone who dares to look into his background, votes, record and associations.
So much for hope and change.
Posted by: SAM | September 16, 2008 10:32 AM
It's flat out funny to me, how GOP supporters are talking about squashing free speech. Aren't you the same people a few years ago who told America that if you weren't with Bush on his Iraq policies, you were a traitor?
Pot, meet kettle.
Just as this toolshed had every right to pollute the airwaves with his garbage, the protesters had every right to do the same.
Again, pot, meet kettle.

If America votes this guy in, America deserves him!

To the poster who thinks being a governor is less experience than being a Senator is mistaken. A governor "governs"...a senator tries to make laws. As for your example of Eisenhower - you have to be kidding me - he commanded (governed, directed, made decisions) during WWII. You can not compare Obama's legislative experience (especially over the past 18 months!) with governing. And his rabble rousing in Chicago did not produce any viable results for the "commuity" except line his and others' pockets.
Posted by: Krystal | September 16, 2008 10:33 AM
This is what politicians used to call hogwash before lipstick became all the rage. Senator Barack Obama conducted an interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, who clearly has not been so favorable to Obama. And, Fox News has not been so favorable to Obama. So, it may just be Obama doesn't want to go on WGN because, well, its just Chicago radio, and he is most likely assured of getting Illinois' electoral votes Nov. 4

WOW just WOW, this guy just said Barry Obama has more experience than Reagan...

Marxists, or Marxist wanna-be's will always try to silence the opposition. There is nothing new here. That's what Pelosi and the "Fairness Doctrine" is all about. Obama is no different. What is different is that a huge number of people are finally, finally seeing through this true American menace. And the shifting polls are registering the movement-even CNN, one of the most partial, partisan, biased news sources on the planet has started looking for a towel to throw in. Keep it up Barry, and keep up the mud against Mrs Palin. It's working, just not in your favor!
Posted by: David H | September 16, 2008 10:35 AM
Obama is a Marxist, so why does any of this surprise anyone? He has now tried to cut backroom deals with both the Canadians on free trade, and the Iraqis on playing the war to his advantage. Who's next, Chavez or Putin? He has learned from the Clinton model, how to suppress the opposition by any means necessary. Obama is just another dangerous radical. The Bill Ayers friendship is radioactive for Obama, and he's trying to shut it down fast. Good luck.

Why should anyone be surprised at the Nobama attack machine reaction to this interview? Obama and his minions are radical socialists who will stop at nothing to shove their brand of socialism down our throats. What is dangerous about Nobama is that he really believes that he is the expected one, the anointed one who has a "right" to the office. He is simply a charlatan and a demagogue just as the dangerous socialists in past history. He will do anything to crush any criticism because he truly believes that he should simply be installed as president because he is entitled to it. Freedom of the press? Ha! The 1st Amendment is O.K. as long as it's protections do not allow any criticisms of liberals and socialists.

WGN is not unlike most radio stations. They are in it to make a profit. At one time they probably could afford to exhibit some class but those days are gone. If they can maximize profits by putting a nazi on the air, they would do it. Let's face it, we're playing into their hands by helping to promote the authors of sham publications. I'd say that WGN might consider offering some balance by promoting authors that expose the negatives of McCain and Pahlin.

Contrary to Mike G in above comment about the experience of Obama. It's not about how many years, it's about what the job is. Senator is not the same as Govenor. He was 1 of 100 senators with a staff of about 3 people vs a Govenor that was in charge of pretty much all state employees. I'm president of a company, (with 3 employees) that doesn't mean that I have the same knowledge on how to run a business as Bill Gates does. I've heard that while a state senator Obama voted 'present' 130 times, that doesn't sound like soneone with experience or leadership.

Listen loonies, neither slander nor libel are protected forms of speech.
Learn the law before spouting off cries of the first amendment.
In addition, the campaign is recruiting the public and is not suggesting the person be jailed or his works made illegal. So if you think this has anything to do with the first amendment, you need an examination.

I noticed not one person here ever pointed out where Freddoso lied. You see, they can't. They haven't read the book. But they know that if it doesn't portray Senator Obama with a halo, it must be bad.
Perhaps they should read the book. Freddoso talks less about Obama and more about the corruption that is Illinois and Chicago politics. Something no Illinois resident should be proud of.
But wanting to stop Freddoso from being on WGN by strong arm tactics is just wrong. If you are so secure in your candidates history, you should ignore him as those who have written hit books on George Bush have been ignored.
We don't stop free speech here, people. And if that is what you subscribe to, move to Cuba.

The Obama campaign has the order all wrong, and they should know better. First, you win the election. Then you install a secret police to instill order and manage "re-education". Then you create another secret police to watch the first one. Then you move out the educated and upper class and move in the proletariat, creating a new upper class. THEN, and only then, do you begin to censor all media, and start replacing "Oldspeak" with "Newspeak".

The last 8 years have seen us taking steps further and further from a democracy. If you're really this clueless, please don't vote. There's a reason this country is hated by so many around the world.
The WORLD is praying Obama gets elected this November. In fact, most of the world is more educated on American politics than the people who actually vote for our president. There are many respectable shows on WGN-AM but U of Chicago professor, Dr. Milt Rosenberg, the radio host of the program in question, has let his ideological leanings, and possibly his age, cloud his judgment on what is responsible broadcasting. Any liberal who thinks WGN or the Tribune should suffer repercussions for interviewing this author really needs to take a good, long hard look at what that means. Do you really want to silence someone with whom you disagree, even if he is a crackpot? The quickest way for your candidate to gain credibility is by allowing those opposed to his candidacy free rein to criticize, because when you stomp your feet in typical, whiny liberal fashion you only lend credence to the opposition.
Obamabots, you have already lost. To quote a famous writer, Me thinks thou dost protest too much. Or words to that effect.

The people calling in to get this gentleman off the air are in fact practising their free speach rights. For all the people talking about free speach, here is how it works; the First Amendment prevent the government from infringing on your rights to free speach. There is not government action here so the Obama supporters that call in to voice their dissaproval are practising there free speach right just as much as the individual has to right to voice his opinions on the air.
As for WGN radio, it is a part of the Tribune Corporation which is a right leaning corporation so it makes sense that they would propgate ideas and thoughts that would not be furthering Obama's casue.
They too are talking advantge of their First Amendment right to freedom of the press.

Why no refutation of what this book is saying? I hear about the lies, and the "hate speech", and the right-wing smear machine (shades of Hillary), but not one instance of an explanation of what the lies were. Maybe they're not lies after all...

Everyone who actually "wants" to learn about Barrack Obama knows that he is desperately trying to marginalize the number of people from learning about his past. The guy is largely running on "hope" and "change". What a joke. But worse is this attempt to intimidate a radio station into silence. Come on Obama. If they were all lies PROVE IT! Threatening a radio station doesn't prove anything.

In America, I always thought that we always supported the right of citizens to speak whether we agree or not. Tolerance is not a quality of the OBAMA camp apparently. I wonder if Senator Barry will use gov't power to silence debate? I'll bet he fully supports the UN-fairness Act that seeks to destroy talk radio and silence conservative voices. I suggest that liberals become more tolerant and stop using gestapo tactics. It is quite sad that they seek to quash opinions. Debate and disagree, but please stop being so UN-American.

This is not new with Milt Rosenberg's show. He has been attacking Obama for months and books authors to further his arguments. He is no different than Rush, Sean and other neo-conservatives not just on Obama but other conservative issues, however he tries to hide under the cover of the U of Chicago Psychology Professor for credibility. I have written to WGN and Milt about how bias he is and have stopped listening to his show....and continue to tell others.

Where were you all when CNN was critical of McCain and Palins qualifications and decided to pull out of an interview? All Brown did was ask a truthful question. McCain = Scripted Talk & Lies

Way to go stupid Americans. Keep fighting among yourselves. And please do vote for McCain :)

I have always enjoyed WGN when I can get it on the dial.
Freedom of Speech does not belong to any party, person or ideology.
If you can't handle WGNs programming please tune to NPR. They provide 24 hour a day U.S. taxpayer funded Communist propaganda.
Join them today as Obama plays Venus Flytrap next to Terry Gross on Fresh Air.

So, the media wants to show their political views on the air. So what. That's nothing new. It's guaranteed under our constitution. If you don't like it, change the channel. I'm sure there is more than one in Chicago. Reading the posts here clearly show the divide in this great country caused by our political parties. Both parties have forgotten who they work for. Our enemies are laughing at us.

If MikeG thinks that his list of experience for presidents, which includes Dwight Eisenhower (no political experience) is an accurate gauge of it, I think he should look again. Eisenhower, for example, had to run a huge staff, millions of men, and manage relations between France, England, Russia, the US, and other allies. I think this hardly qualifies as 'no political experience'. Read some history and see what it was like.
I also think that Reagan had a harder job of it running California (20% of the nation's population) for eight years than Obama had in the state senate. Have you observed what our Illinois legislators, of either party, do in Springfield? You call that governing?
Governors have won a lot of presidential elections because they actually have had to run something and prove their competency. We haven't elected a senator since Kennedy. It was Governors Reagan, Carter, Clinton, and Bush that won elections.

While I still do not understand why so many people would support a candidate who says nothing about his real intentions, I do understand that this candidate wants everything done his way, or his wrath shall be visited upon those who disobey him.

@ Hillary Angered By Sarah Palin's Comments September 16, 2008 9:05 AM:
I just googled a portion of your "PRESIDENTIAL AND VICE PRESIDENTIAL CHOICES" missive and whaddya know... your entire post is a copy-and-paste-job that's been posted on dozens of sites around the web.
What's your official job on the campaign: hack, flack, or lackey?

I read that WGN & Rosenberg'
s producer invited an Obama rep to appear on both shows and they declined. Then Team Obama encourage others to boycott the show & station. Hey, if it's all lies, get on the air with the liars and call them out. Share the real story. But no, not the Obamaniacs. They respond with obfuscation and claims of discrimination. Could it be because they know Obama isn't the squeaky clean Pol they've presented?

Go ahead and keep kidding yourself, that BO is not a communist. It is unthinkable, if you've never lived in such a society. For all those who know what it is like to live under socialism, BO's ideas, ethics and BS, fit right in - taking away our rights and distributing income "equally". Promoting the idea that the government can solve all your problems. You people better WAKE UP

Wow.. someone just tried to say Obama has more experience than 8 of the 17 Presidents in the past 100 years. and tied with one.
You cant "TIE" the point people make about experience has nothing to do with # of years..its not a contest that way.
Its about experiences and productivity while in office, or in business. Eisenhower didnt have any you say, but I'm sorry, he was busy destroying the Nazi regime.. but lets ignore that, even though there are only two jobs outlined by the Constitution for the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces is one, and executor of legislation passed by Congress is the other.
But hey.. his 35 or 40 years as one of the greatest Generals in human history, during one of our darkest times doesnt count as much as Obama's time as a State Senator..right?
Posted by: Matt | September 16, 2008 11:42 AM
Wasn't this book one that Mayor Palin wanted to 'ban'.
What a joke...Obama's team speaks out of both sides of theirs mouths...plus during a freefall in the stock market he's getting 28,500 dollars per person for his smear campaign....what a bunch of hypocritical losers.

So we have yet another instance where someone is slated to talk about Barack Obama in an unflattering light and (surprise surprise) "The Chosen One" is trying to shut him up. This reminds me of another famous leader. oh what was his name...oh yeah: Stalin.
McCain/Palin 08
