Alaska report: Palin abused her power: The Swamp

The Swamp

by James Oliphant

From the New York Times:

A legislative committee investigating Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, the Republican vice presidential candidate, issued a report Friday night that found she unlawfully abused her authority by firing the state's public safety commissioner.

While the report concluded that a family grudge was not the only reason for dismissing the commissioner, Walter Monegan, it said it was probably a contributing factor.

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda, to wit: To get Trooper Michael Wooten fired," said the report, which was issued in Anchorage.

Mr. Monegan has insisted that he was dismissed as retribution for resisting pressure to fire a Trooper Wooten, who was involved in a bitter divorce with the governor's sister. Ms. Palin said Mr. Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

Ms. Palin told reporters at a campaign stop in Ohio on Thursday that she has nothing to hide. "It's a governor's right and responsibility to make sure that they have the right people in the right place at the right time to best serve the people who hired them, and for me, the people of Alaska, so my cabinet's got to be the right cabinet for the people of Alaska," she said.

In another setback for Ms. Palin, a judge on Friday ordered the state of Alaska to preserve any government-related e-mail messages that Gov. Sarah Palin sent from private accounts.

The ruling, by Craig Stowers of Anchorage superior court, came as the result of a lawsuit brought by a resident, Andree McLeod, against Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Ms. Palin has occasionally used private e-mail accounts to conduct state business, and her Yahoo accounts were hacked last month.

The judge ordered the attorney general to contact Yahoo and other private carriers to preserve any e-mail messages sent and received on those accounts. An assistant attorney general told the court that the governor was no longer using here private e-mail accounts to conduct state business.

Lawmakers in Alaska released the 300-page report and 1,000 accompanying pages of documents and testimony Friday after being briefed on its findings during a closed-door session.

The politically volatile report is the product of a months-long state investigation into whether Ms. Palin abused her power as governor when she dismissed Mr. Monegan as the state public safety commissioner in July. But Mr. Monegan has said the governor's office pressured him to dismiss Trooper Wooten , who had been embroiled in a bitter divorce and custody dispute with the governor's sister.

Ms. Palin's husband, Todd, and several of her aides responded to subpoenas from the state investigator, Steve Branchflower, but the governor herself did not testify under oath in the investigation.

Ms. Palin has said she acted appropriately. She has proffered several reasons for Mr. Monegan's dismissal, including that he was insubordinate and did not support her budget reforms, and that she wanted to steer the state's Public Safety Department in a new direction.

The McPalin campaign is now officially FINISHED.

You can put a fork in them, they're DONE!

No surprise here.
Sweet!

So the great goddess of Republicania has been scoped. Her I am trying to decide who to vote for and find out that Sarah is just another slime ball. Who'd a thunk it? I was really impressed with her referring to herself as a female dog (she really did) to the thunderous applause of her fans. The crowds just roar at her utterances about Obama's lack of trustworthiness. Now her she is being found officially to be untrustworthy.

But the ruling on her abuse of power will just roll off her back, she'll look herself in the mirror, and say "go kick butt, girl." The Republicans will probably prepare to boil both Sarah & McCain in oil.

My fellow prisoners. I couldn't say it better myself;

This report only confirms the truth about Palin..She is crooked and not at all what we need in the White House..I think with her past instead of stumping hatred every day during the election process she had better be hoping she is not investigated even farther..She seems like a very spiteful, egodriven, radical, impulsive individual that thrives on other peoples misery..She should have loved her Country enough to say " no thank you" when asked to run on the VP ticket..We are still waiting on her medical records and hr college transcripts and degree pls media...She and McSame are too unstable to run this Country..Go home...

Sadly, it's hard to know what to believe any more. With the non-stop criticism of Palin over the last few weeks I am forced to take this report with a grain of salt. The full-court press to get Palin while Obama and Biden get nothing but love leaves one to wonder how much partisan politics has played into anything related to Palin any more. On another note...come on already, I think we've all known Obama (or any Democrat for that matter) was a shoe-in for the presidency this year. I hope the Obama machine didn't waste too much money on Palin.

cheney-palin, bush-mccain, more of the same!

One more example of McCain's judgement.

Old-fashioned breaking your enemy's kneecaps politics as usual. Not so mavericky.

She's still minor league compared to Daley, Blago and Obama.

Let's see, after six years and how many million dollars spent on Ken Starr's witch hunt, Bill Clinton was impeached for ...?????
Wonder if McCain will try an Eagleton this close to Nov 4, or will that old standby, stonewalling, prevail ?
Is that the band from the Titanic I hear warming up ?

Omitted in the above article: facts.

For example, note that the Swamp writer doesn't bother to link to the actual report. Or to Gov. Palin's statement. So that readers can check things for themselves. Obviously, the Swamp writer hasn't even read the report he's writing about.

It used to be Journalism 101 to actually READ a report prior to writing an article about it.

I'd say more, but the Swamp would censor me if I did.

Grasping at straws on this one...there's nothing here.

Get over it lefties...

Bill Ayers...now there's a story!

Paulo

I still love love love McCain but I'm an idiot and people shouldn't listen to idiots like me.

Wait.

Was the B.I.L. actually abusive to his wife and child (violence and tasing come to mind)? If so, I think the Govhernor would have been remiss NOT to try any legal means to separate the trooper from the state. If as the public safety droid has said, Palin was just over-reacting, well that's good to know.

The penalty for being from Alaska is also the good news -- a legislative committee up there can make a decision in a timely fashion.

Are we to understand that Senator Obama never exercised undue influence for a cause he feels strongly about? Wow.

And we want this type of behaviour running the country? Haven't we had enough of this vindictive type of behaviour that thinks just of themselves and those that are in partnership with them, instead of running a country or state that holds a myriad and diverseness of people, cultures, and traditions. This woman voted to prevent Native people of Alaska to learn their language, traditions, customs, prevent them from learning and teaching their children their ancestral ways? Imagine what she would do if she WAS president!!! This lady has brains...yessir indeedy....she sit's on them.

Let's see ... a few months for Alaska to produce this, years and still nothing from Illinois on Obama's dirty Rezko deal.

So, is it a witchhunt in Alaska, or a coverup in Illinois?

Was the B.I.L. actually abusive to his wife and child (violence and tasing come to mind)?

No, stupid but not violent.
No reports of violent acts against the ex-wife, just threats. The tasing was extremely stupid, but also not violent. The kid wanted to get tazed so stepdad stupidly taped the leads to the kids arm like they do in training and hit a 1 second taze. Father of the year he is not!
The step son said he wanted to do it again too.

Gotcha!!!

thanks

You Betcha Sarah!

Good riddance to you, and not a moment too soon.

This comes as no surprise and really speaks for an indepth vetting BEFORE offering a bimbo the chance at being a heart beat away from President.
Don't be surprised if her political days are down the toilet. Perhaps after the American people have spoken and sent her back on a one way bridge to Alaska, the people of Alaska will have had enough as well.
Never in the history of the Presidential elections in the USA has a more unqualified person been put on the ticket for Vice-President.
This alone should show the American people how out of tune McBush really is.
God help this country, we have fallen so far.

This may sound damning, but it likely will go the way of other abuses of power. After all, the governor does have the right to change personnel.

But that's not the question.

The question is: Why did the governor's people make so many calls to various personnel regarding her ex-brother-in-law.

Only full disclosure of this; only candid recollections will suffice.

The party that demands Obama make full disclosure regarding Ayers can give the public no less regarding Wooten.

Paulo, the REAL story, which the mainstream media seems to be sitting on, is Todd Palin's membership in the Alaskan Independence Party. Sarah even went to some of their conventions. This group wants to secede from the U.S. Talk about terrorists!!!

McCain rally in Lakeville, MN made Minnesotans look so ill-informed about Obama. All in all it was a good day for Obama tho.... McSame under pressure had to finally confront his supporters. It made him look really dumb now for inciting them in the first place. Couldn't have played out any better.

What a surprise. - Yeah Right.

When the lead prosecutor, French, and his other 'ruffled feathers' announces an "October surprise' BEFORE the investigation begins, appoints an investigator who is friendly with the Commissioner who resigned, it's surprising that we find she had the right to fire.

What a non-issue !!

Its ovious that this stupid report is taint with Democrapers who are slanting things in alaska. Nothing has changed other than she did her job to get rid of a manager person who was NOT doing the right job. I'd do the same if I was in her shoes. Most of the people reacting to the report are Democrapers who can't stand for a strong woman with leadership who takes charge and does her job. The obamma democraper crowd are a bunch of die hard liberals who want big government and ALL americans will pay dearly if they get to rule this country. We recently seen the stock market crash, now we will see the whole goverment crash when they get to spend two or three thrillen dollars of tax money on frills galore to pay for wholesale projects for people who do not live up to their resposibilies. Example...bale out homeowners who did not pay their moragage. They all get payed off loans at your expense.I can't wait to see how this country will fall when money driven Obamma gets his way on free college for all blacks with a 1.5 grade average. Free food and utilies for any minories who has a income level of $40K a year. Free Free Free .......

She's a small town, backwater pol, at best.

If you had a weird flashback when she popped up (like a toadstool after a rainstorm) on the nat'l scene, you did (if you ever saw Silence of the Lambs).

Jodie Foster's do and makeup at the very beginning of that film , when she's on the obstacle course, make her look uncannily like Sarahhhh.

Which is part of the point. Clarice Starling is, at the beginning, still a hick.

It is amazing how a report on Palin states she abused her power.
The committee was composed of 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats hand chosen by Palin.
In the minds of Palin supporters. They didn't see the report or Obama spent money to slant the report. The investigation started before she was nominated. The committee comprised 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats Palin chose. How does this translate to Obama supporter attacking her. We didn't even know who she was until Aug. 29. Her husband was questioning state employees from the Governors office. My bosses spouse better not question me about anything.

After reading all the vitrol here against Sarah Palin, I still look forward with a sense a glee to the report that will be issued once Tony Rezko starts singing to the Feds about some of the activities your beloved Barack Obama was involved with.

It may take some time, and things may indeed go your ways as far as this election goes.

But after that report is issued for all the world to see, it will still mean that I may still have the rare opportunity of seeing TWO Democratic Presidents impeached by Congress in my lifetime, and that will make all of this worth it.

Posted by: Paulo | October 10, 2008 11:01 PM

It was important 40 years ago. It is irrelevant to this election.

Now if you can prove Obama helped Ayers to set some of those bombs when he was 9 YEARS OLD. Now you've got something.

As the report shows, what Palin did was not "technically" illegal, but it was certainly un-ethical. McCain's whole campaign has been based on ethics-reform. They are hypocrites of the worst order.

And for all complaining about the media probing of Palin. Get serious. Obama has been probed and picked apart the last 2 years. And his entire life has been an open book for 6 years. Nobody outside Alaska knew anything about this "celebrity beauty queen" 6 weeks ago. We have a right to find out all we can. McCain should have done his homework instead of pandering to the religious right. And now he's stuck with her.

lololol. I hear the GOP'ers spinning and deflecting this one. "My, my what should we do Billy Bob. Well Matilda, I'm not gonna believe it. That Muslim n....r probably set this all up. Palin is sooo darn perty and cute. She would never do anything like this. You're so right Billy Bob. It's all a set up for sure!!! Yeeeee haaaaaa!!!!

Did a woman at a McCain rally really say that Obama was an "Arab"? Perhaps she was planted in the audience by the Democrats to make McCain supporters look stupid?

just another slew of lies told by this woman and the republican party

Now, if only the investigation against Alberto Gonzales and the firising of nine U.S. attorneys (democrats) would be revived. After the election, when Obama is in place, this investigation should be revived, and those who did the political firings should be convicted of abuse of power and sentenced.

McCain and Palin are indeed done. Makes my day.

the present controll is held by the republican party. vice president cheney owns a company call haliburton, haliburton is being contracted by the government to carry fuel, do the troops laundry, supply water etc. they charge the government $99.00 for each, yes i said it, each bag of laundry. that means if we had 100.000 troops in iraq and another 50 to 75.000 in afghanistan, mulitply that 3 times per month. this is a company owned by the vice president. how is it that the vice president is allowed to contract his company to make millions per month for somthing simple that the troops can take care of themselves. another company called blackwater which is owned and ran by an ex-cia operative are contracted by the government to guard missle's and other bases and carry out an assortment of duties are nothing but mercenaries, they have been contracted by the same government with 47 billion yes i said billion$ contracts up from 17 billion$ a few years ago. this person was also allowed to pattern his computer network after the cia's, his former employer. now if that isnt a breach of national security i dont know what is. that is the reason the government cant get anything done, they are so busy trying to grease their own palms its a wonder why the economy hasnt come to a complete crash years ago. their pratice of neo-liberalism, neo-colonialism is why this economy is in the state it is today. out-sourcing, downsizing, and privatization is common practice of this government and thats why we cant get anything done that postively refects this country. they are so busy preaching buy american this buy american that when all they do is practice hypocracy, by doing the things they tell us not to do. if these two bozo's (palin and mccain) get in office, we will see nothing but the same you see written above.

Syndicated columnist and professor of law Hugh Hewitt has the best take on this:

"Democratic state senator and staunch Barack Obama supporter Hollis French of Alaska boasted in early September that he would provide an "October Surprise" which would upset the McCain-Palin campaign....

Today, however, in an episode of political theater that would make Josef Stalin blush, French gave it his very best shot: The investigator he hired and directed, Steve Branchflower, has labored mightily and given birth to a bloated and redundant 263-page report which boils down, for purposes of the ongoing presidential campaign, to two paragraphs that completely contradict one another. And the one of them that's unfavorable ignores the most important — indeed conclusive — evidence on point, but goes on to provide Branchflower's guess as to whether Gov. Palin has done anything improper.

Please understand this, if you take nothing else away from reading this post: The Branchflower Report is a series of guess and insupportable conclusions drawn by exactly one guy, and it hasn't been approved or adopted or endorsed by so much as a single sub-committee of the Alaska Legislature, much less any kind of commission, court, jury, or other proper adjudicatory body. It contains no new bombshells in terms of factual revelations. Rather, it's just Steve Branchflower's opinion — after being hired and directed by one of Gov. Palin's most vocal opponents and one of Alaska's staunchest Obama supporters — that he thinks Gov. Palin had, at worst, mixed motives for an action that even Branchflower admits she unquestionably had both (a) the complete right to perform and (b) other very good reasons to perform.

Here are the two key "findings," however (from page 8 of the .pdf file; boldface mine):

Finding Number One

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides

The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust."

Finding Number Two

I find that, although Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.

Here's a note to Mr. Branchflower, who clearly is verbose, but obviously none too keen a scholar of logic: Gov. Palin's so-called "firing" of Monegan (it wasn't a firing, it was a re-assignment to other government duties that he resigned rather than accept) can't simultaneously be a violation of the Ethics Act and "a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority." This, gentle readers, is a 263-page piece of political circus that actually explicitly refutes itself on its single most key page!"

"Proper and lawful..." Perhaps if The Swamp scribe had actually read the report prior to writing on it, he might have noted these words.

See www.hughhewitt.com for more.

Nedless to say, The Swamp, in its eagerness to help Obama, will never cite Hewitt's article.

And Joe Biden has never erred? It amazes and disgusts me that the press focuses on Palin, but never on Biden, whose political career is strewn with buffoonery and embarrassing mistakes. He has plagiarized. His Clarence Thomas hearings turned into a political circus. Come on! What happened to even handedness?

If the governor abused power, doesn't that mean she broke the law? And wouldn't that require the legislature begin impeachment proceedings? Oh, I forgot. The rest of the report states that Gov. Palin acted completely lawfully in terminating Monegan. Abuse of power = lawful behavior. Vote fraud = no media coverage. Welcome to the world of Obama.

Well Im glad this makes headlines. Here little thing the Republicans do is critisized and hated by all media. And I dont mind this at all. I think its good to "air" out politicians dirty laundry. However, how come I havent heard one peep about Obama's relationship with Ayers, Rezko, Wright, Blago, etc???? WHy is it, this man can be on camera say "typical white people", not wear his flag pin, and not honor the national anthem, and the media is fine with that. Why during an economic crisis does nobody brink up the 97 "yes" votes for tax increase. Why is it every little thing done wrong by McCain/Palin and its spotlighted in the media. Obama could be on tv saying "I hate america", while beheading soilders and the Obama lemmings would not pay any attention to it. Why is a Junior Senator from one of the most corrupt governmental states given a free ride?

This

"So, is it a witchhunt in Alaska, or a coverup in Illinois?" The Rezko deal has been out in the open, stupid but pales compared to McCain-Davis. In Alaska the majority of the people looking into Palin's situation are Republicans. The Chuck Hagel types who are honest. I'm reading the entire 263 page Troopergate report and Palin acted like George Ryan. You know where he's at. Just got o the Alaska Legislature page and download it for yourself.

A "gate" this isn't. More of a creaky hinge, if that.

The laughable Bounds, boy commentator on the McBush circus, has found victory for Shreiking Sarah in the special counsel's report. She violated the public trust required of her in her duties and abused the authority of her office in trying to achieve a personal desire to have her former brother-in-law, a State trooper, fired. She and her cronies brought constant and undue pressure on the Safety Director and his staff to no avail. Then she fired the Director and lied about the reasons for his discharge. It doesn't require a ricket scientist to connect the discharge of the Director to the failure to fire the trooper.

I suspect that Sarah will continue to talk about Obama's being "untrustworthy" and "lying about Bill Ayers" despite her glaring conduct in this report. She likely will run off to Fox News and play some more patty-cake with Hannity and van Susteren to keep the Dupes and vacuities cheering for her and the plutocrats who sponsor her.

Governor Palin had every right to fire any Director or Cabinet member they are partisans appointed by the Governor.
The state public safety director was a vindictive man. Governor Palin offered him another job but he insisted on being Public Safety Director. Obviously, he has a huge ego.
Obama sent 30 investigators to Alaska right after Governor Palin accepted John McCains VP offer. The Obama rats ran around and stirred things up. Just like he hired a lawyer to object to signatures for Alice Palmer and she was thrown off the ballot. Obama will do or say anything to become President. He is totally insincere and a fraud.
Governor Palin noted that the brother-in-law tasered her 10 year old nephew. Officer Wooten was a known alchoholic and lacked judgement to be a police officer. He said he regreted tasering the nephew.
The Governor Palin story is a vindictive attempt by the driveby media to annoy Governor Palin. Especially, since in 20 months they never told us anything detrimental to B Hussein Obama we had to get it from the internet.
We have a right to know about Obama and we will continue to pressure till we hear the truth about Obama.Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Chinaman (it's his posting name), don't knock Minnesotans based on the stupid audience at McCain's rally yesterday. Stupid McCain supporters is a national thing. But, that woman calling him an Arab was about as dumb as it gets, if merely for the assertion that is some sort of disqualifier for public office.

As a resident of Minnesota, I can tell you more than enough of us know the truth about Obama such that he'll win this state. And next time you think about knocking our state, remember we were the only state in 1984 to not vote for Reagan and his voodoo economics that are still hurting this country today.

And don't forget, that horrid Geo. W. once had a DUI. Eeek!

It seems to me that Sarah Palin has been thinking that she could be "mother of the year"...well, as a mom, I think she is teaching her children that you do not have to campaign on your own merits, but you must tear your opponent down in any manner of ways so you will look good because he looks bad. Horrid!

"Let's see, after six years and how many million dollars spent on Ken Starr's witch hunt, Bill Clinton was impeached for ...?????

..... for beating Bush and ruining the Republicans' dreams of the Permanent Republican Majority. Whatever you may be told, he got impeached because Republicans are sore losers.

Umm, you forgot one very important part of the report swamp. The part that say that SHE DIDN"T BREAK THE LAW WHEN SHE FIRED MONEGAN! After all that what this troopergate probe was about from the beginning. Here, since it is above the trib and the swamp to actually present the facts to us readers in an unbiased way, i will quote the suntimes article that happens to tell us about the most important part of the report:

"Stephen Branchflower, a retired prosecutor hired to conduct the investigation, said Monegan's firing was lawful."

Wow, so that means that she didn't....um....break that law.

When will we hear the truth about Todd Palin's membership in the Alaskan Independence Party? And Sarah's 2008 taped speech to the AIP convention? If you're interested in guilt by association, you can't get any closer or more current than the VP candidates spouse belonging to a party that believes adamantly that Alaska should be it's own country. Look into the history of the Alaskan Independence Party and its founder. Scary

This story is so 'retro'. It sounds just like the vindictiveness of Richard Nixon. Remember him? The country doesn't need any more 'Tricky Dicks' running around in the White House.

But after that report is issued for all the world to see, it will still mean that I may still have the rare opportunity of seeing TWO Democratic Presidents impeached by Congress in my lifetime, and that will make all of this worth it.

Posted by: cgull | October 11, 2008 6:20 AM

This is what the party of "great" Americans have been reduced to. His life long dream? To see 2 democratic presidents impeached. As time goes by, we see that the republican party has become the party of hate and fear. They hold no American values and quite clearly resent most of America.

This is not the only newspaper that omitted finding #2 that the firing of Monegan was a lawful and proper exercise. And you call yourselves JOURNALISTS?????? And then you wonder why people think the media is biased. Those of you who get your "news" from the Swamp are being had. If the Swamp is mere commentary, that would be fine (nonetheless a very incomplete discussion) but the Tribune continually posts headlines from the Swamp as if they are real news articles.

Now, when will we hear the truth about the Obama-Rezko connection. I'm guessing the left-wing media will break that story the day after the election.

Ah...these poor republicans. Attacked by the media. The very same media that did not do its job when they led us into the disaster called Iraq. They let the republicans use Americas patriotism and anger over 9/11 to make the biggest blunder of all times. They were afraid to question the actions because of the very emotional storm the republicans created. Now...they are upset at the media. Quite frankly, I could give a rats behind after the way they used us.

It was an appalling investigation. There were admitted Obama supporters on this panel. Along with an investigater French announcing that THERE WOULD BE AN OCT SURPRISE FOR PALIN. Why would any fair and balanced investigatin be expected from one who would make such a comment.

Here are some other POINTS THAT MEDIA WILL NEVER REPORT TO YOU that I found on my own>

Facts that have yet to be reported in any media

1. Investigator Steve Branchflower has a GLARING conflict of interest. Not only did he work closely with Walt Monegan's Anchorage Police department for years in the District Attorney's office, but his wife was a detective in that department, including after Monegan became chief. She was even quoted singing Monegan's Praises to the Anchorage Daily News when he was hired as chief. ("New Chief" by Lisa Demer, Anchorage Daily News, Jan. 31, 2001).

2. Todd Palin was ORDERED by the head of the Governor's secutity detail, Special Agent Bob Cockrell, to discuss Trooper Wooten with Walt Monegan, as Wooten presented a credible threat to the Governor's safety. Here's a direct quote from Special Agent Cockrell, who is now providing security for his sixth consecutive governor:

“When made aware of the security concerns regarding a state trooper, I instructed the First Gentleman to contact the commissioner of Public Safety. It is standard protocol to ask every governor about any threats they perceive or have realized. I will not hesitate to set the record straight in answering these false allegations by former Commissioner Monegan.” (emphasis added)

3. State records show that Monegan lied about the number of times he met with the Governor during his tenure. While Monegan claims that the Governor was inaccessible and only met with him four times, records indicate that he had more than two dozen meetings with Gov. Palin, including.

So I see this left wing rag of a paper is at it again.

So she abused her power against a brother in law who was the scum of the earth?? Seems to me most normal folks could care less about a state trooper who tasers a child?

Well I guess you got your Lady. How convenient??

And we can now speak the Mantra..Praise O'Bama he is the second coming??

Pathetic!!!!

Speaking about the moose:

Please read:
>>>>> from report >>>

He said the couple were especially consternated with his response to their complaint that Wooten had shot a female moose without a permit.

Upon investigation, he said, he learned that Palin's sister had a permit for the moose and was present when it was shot. In addition, he said, Gov. Palin's father had butchered the moose.

"I pointed out that there are people also involved in this incident that theoretically could also be charged," Monegan told Todd Palin. "And he said, 'I didn't want that. I only want Wooten

Having read the report, I can only say that my initial instincts about Sarah Palin were absolutely right.

Whether she actually did break the law here is somewhat unclear, but the report shows that she (and Todd) do put enormous energy and resources into personal vendettas, twisting facts as it suits them.

And, as Mr. Monehan can vouch for, if you don't see things her way, watch out!

Todd Palin obviously needs to get a life, you know, other than spying on his former brother in law, hoping to catch that man in some illegal activity...or hanging out at his wife's office, using her staff to carry out his agenda.

Wake up, people!! Do you really want these people in the White House??????

A previous poster stated that due to the recent attacks and pressures on Palin he is going to take the Alaskan report about her abuse of power with a grain of salt. To that I just wanted to say that you must educate yourself on the facts of this matter. The investigation began before she was chosen to be the VP nominee by McCain. Moreover, the investigation was spearheaded by both Republicans and Democtrats. Do not buy into the junk that the McCain campaign is selling you about this being a witch hunt by the Obama campaign agianst Palin. The Obama campaign is not using this finding to lead its charge. The reality is that the McCain campaign has been caught red-handed with this finding, and the only response they have is to continue to mislead its followers on the truth of the matter. As the Tribune columnist stated in his oped piece to this report, "But at least I know enough not to believe desperate people who are talking trash."

People please wake up and make smart choices that are proper and sound for this country...Obama-Biden '08

The HACKER already made public statements that there wasn't anything he could damage her with in those e-mails that he ALREADY made public>so making it public when it already has been made public is a bit redunant ha.

It was reported on the tv news that this dept head was fired for trying to make a budget that did not reflect those views of the Governor.....which are facts that are supported in that> THIS TROOPER WAS NEVER FIRED>EVEN AFTER THE DEPT HEAD WAS REPLACED BY ANOTHER PERSON THAT WAS APPROVED BY THE PALIN.

She was also found to be within the law to fire him for what ever reasons she chooses.

Also, the divorce was reported to have occured years prior to this firing.

Dan is right! It is a known fact that Illinois is a corrupt State with Daley, Blog, Strogger all doing their thing. People voted for Obama and thought he was going to help clean up the mess as he promised. So far all he has done since being elected Senator is to run for President. And the Rezko, Wright, etc. people he has been close to and he claims not to know their views shows he is also just as bad, if not worse, than the other corrupt politicians in this State. I am also tired of listening to him stammer and stumble whenever asked a question that he does not answer. For a man with such an education I would like him to explain what “worser” means, as it is a word he likes to use. And now he wants to spill that vial throughout the country. Every time we try to ask a question of this man it seems he is "off limits" and his racial campaigning should be an offense to every American. Oh, sorry can't say that now can I?

Just who is Sarah Palin? We know almost nothing about her.

What goes around comes around....Palin is the worse VP choice this country could ever get!
OBAMA will win
sorry Republicans you had your 8 years and you really screwed it up

I love the selective reading so many of the posters here do. Palin BROKE THE LAW! Alaska has an ETHICS law; the report documents that she BROKE THAT LAW. That she had the right to fire someone is not the issue. The problem was the ILLEGAL PRESSURE she and the unelected First Dude put on her subordinates.

The man she fired DID discipline the BIL. That wasn't enough for the vindictive Palin family.

I don't want anyone whose immediate impulse on gaining power is to ABUSE it for personal reasons. THAT is what the report says Palin is GIULTY of.

Wow, some of you people are right. IF i had to chose between being a cop or Gov agent or service man blown up by William Ayers and The Weather Underground or let Alaska Suceed from the union, I would, of course, decide to be blown up by a bomb.

NOT

Are you people stupid? What a ridiculous comment. I would love it if San Francisco would secede from the US.

There are plenty of valid reasons to not want to be the US as it stands now. Haven't all you lefty-loons wanted to move to Canada to escape GWB??

People that blow up other people are terrorists NOT secessionists.

Oh, by the by, Vermont want to secede from the union and no one is batting an eye, maybe because it's run by a real, bonafide, admitted socialist.

I live in Alaska and am relieved to read that so many in the lower 48 are finally beginning to see and appreciate what we had to learn the hard way here in Alaska. Gov Palin cannot be trusted to do what is right for the country. It's all about her and her quest for power and fame and she will use any tactic to get it, even if it means destroying an innocent man's career. We now support and will be voting for a man who is concerned about Americans and that man is Sen Obama.

The thing about this that should disturb people who run business is that this is another attempt by Democrats to get control away from Entrepenuers.
The real goal here is to keep hiring of people out of the hands of the business people and into the hands of lawyers and goverment.
While there are defintely times when Corps abuse power and you need a lawyer, most of the time you CAN'T fire someone who is a lousy employee because they are part of a protected class, or because there are just too many laws in place to prevent firings. This is especially true in education or unions.
Sadly in the 90s Clinton fired an entire staff at will and all the lefties didn't bat an eye. Then Gonzalez did it and panicked when the Democrats started crying foul instead of just standing his ground.
This Palin thing is another case of jealous lefties who don't like any Conservative terminating a fellow lefty.

This is the behavior of a crypto-fascist.

Who is Barack Obama? He's the next President of the United States!!!

Watching the cons twist themselves in knots trying to defend Palin's behavior is pathetic, and telling. It's reminiscent of the Libby conviction. But, but, but..it's the media's fault, it's those partisan dems fault, it's the First Dude's fault, it's my aunt fanny's fault.

Wow, most of you folks sure don't let the facts get in the way before recommending the "political death penalty."

1. The state's Public Safety Commissioner "serves at the pleasure of the Governor. (For the politically blinded that means you support me, my budget positions, my safety programs or you're out of here.)

2. Regardless of any personal or professional relationships, what elected official that was aware of a child being deliberately tasered by an adult and that same adult issuing death threats to a couple, what exactly is the action you would expect of that elected official? Or is it that you have all been living in or around Chicago to long to any longer grasp the concept of right vs. wrong?

Lastly, if you don't support McCain/Palin or if you support Obama that’s okay, it's just fine, really. Just don't let your political disposition prostitute your entire sense of right and wrong. There is a man in Alaska who wears a gun on his hip for a living. He's often alone and the initial representation of the law on many occasions. His decision making and his actions will possibly/likely include life and death decisions......and this person thinks it's okay to taser a child and from newspaper reports, threaten to kill his wife's parents. And the man with the gun, according to what I read was suspended for 5 days. Now what exactly about getting five days off permanently altered his impulsive bad judgment?

In my opinion Palin did the right thing because it was the right thing. That suspension decision was a decision based on inappropriate union influence not public safety or common sense. I would want my son's, neighbor or Mayor to do no less. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a Governor that grasped the concept of doing the right thing, because it's the right thing?

The one post that stood out for me was the one that explained that the dept Head NEVER GOT FIRED, he was offered another position elsewhere and he turned it down.

He would not follow Palin's wishes on making out a budget etc..... and she could have fired him for that or any other reason, but she opted to move him out of there. I think that showed above and beyond fairness to someone who proved to be a trouble maker, and especially in light of his inability to get tough on past problems with this officer.

This is a non-news story other than to show DEMOCRATIC POLITICS RUN AMOCK ! ! !

Can someone tell me where all the REAL conservatives went?

While some of you goofballs are busy defending anything and everything this woman does just because she's on the GOP ticket, the REPUBLICAN president has just recommended Nationalizing the Banking industry. In all your whining about the alleged Socialist ties of Barack Obama, you've ignored the fact that George Bush, between the manner in which he's expanded the federal bureaucracy, started a "war for freedom," and now taken federal funds and placed them in the hands of private industries, has been closer to a Socialist than any president since FDR.

Maybe when you're through parroting whatever talking point Sean Hannity has spewed over the last few weeks, you might notice that your "conservative leader" is more liberal than any president in the last 50 years.

martin-there are other countries in the news for rioting over nationalizing their banking system>WE HOWEVER DID NOTHING OF THE KIND. We instead bought up some of their bad assets.

Under normal situations I WOULD NEVER AGREE TO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, but after reading the history behind what Acorn's founders did with the WELFARE SYSTEM YEARS EARLIER, I see this as just another such assault on CAPITALISM by the FAR LEFT. They care not what they did to all these home owner.

Obama, as Biden said in the Palin debate, was pushing for the interest to be lowered on bad loans but then went even further along than the destruction ACORN caused and pushed for the principle to be lowered which would have finished off the job that Acorn started, destroying banks further.

McCain has pushed for taking that already budgeted bailout money and instead of giving it to Wall Street...directing it towards lower these two areas for the homeowners who could actually afford the Acorn loans to begin with, this way they don't sit on a bad market empty. OBAMA WANTED NO PART OF THAT, even tho he supported Acorn on giving NINJA (no income,no job, or assets) loans to people who would suffer because of them.
McCain/Palin08

Who is Barack Obama? He's the next President of the United States!!!

Dictatior would be a better word than President

I read way, way into the Troopergate
report. Have the Palins no shame?
Evidently not.

Can you imagine what would happen in the Federal government if this reckless, amoral creature were in the White House?

Of course she would run roughshod over poor old McCain, and (heaven forfend) if he became unable to serve -- no, that is unimaginable; it would make past Republican scandals, from Watergate on through the current gang of rogues, look like a Boy Scout jamboree.

Heaven protect the country I love!

OK Palin supporters answer the following questions.
1.) Why did she say "I welcome the investigation" then change her mind and stop cooperating?
2.) Why did she allow her husband so much access to her office?
3.) Why did she accept a per-diem payment while she lived in her own home?
4.) Is it possible for any investigation against someone you support to be legitimate?

Aspasia-you made accusations that there was all this bad stuff that you read deep deep into the report, but hey WHERE'S THE BEEF ha ha ha?

DO SHARE DARLING!?

COZELLA-she welcomed it for the same reason Fox News attorney's reported that she had a clear cut case and could easily come forward on it. She didn't have to.....she used her time campaigning. Wise move!

What did her husband do that you had a question about?

Yes, she did bill the Alaska State Government for per diem on days when she was “home.” This is how it works: she is maintaining two households. The state law defines her official residence in Juneau as “home”, so when she’s up in Wasilla, she’s “traveling”. That’s the way the law is written, and it appears that she has documented and handled her expenses legally and appropriately, even if it seems odd. And yes, her expenses have been anywhere from a third to a fifth of the expenses of the previous Governor. The Washington Post suggests this calls into question her claim to be a fiscal conservative; personally, I think cutting expenses by 70 to 80 percent seems like a pretty good claim to the title.

Frank is in question for stating that Sarah could expect an Oct surprise. That was the start of what would assure an unfare investigation into this.

Maybe you can answer why an Obama surrogate went on fox news and said that Obama never worked with them when we know he trained people, donated money on several occassions to help keep them funded, did lawyer work and commends giving people loans whe they can't afford it>

That was an excellent post! Monegan never actually got fired, he just refused reassignment and then whined he was fired. Palin removed him from his position for many reasons. He was a hostile and incompetent man. He refused to cut his budget. He had a real big attitude problem. For example, he went to see Palin and presented her with a photo portrait of a trooper saluting that was to be presented at a memorial honoring all troopers who had served honorably. It was to be hang in a place of honor. Can you guess who that trooper was who was saluting? None other than Trooper Wooten, a cop who drinks alcohol while driving and performing his duties, kills protected wildlife, tasered his ten year old step son, used his patrol car for personal business, rode around on a snowmobile while supposedly resting while on worker's compensation, threatened to kill Palin's father and made threats against her and her family. Monegan refused to fire Wooten or punish in him in any way. Why? What was the favoritism based on? Drinking buddies? Back to the photo, that demonstrated extreme insensitivity on Monegan's part, his idea of a harassing joke. Of course, he denied knowing Trooper Wooten had posed for the photo, or even knowing what Wooten looked like. I'd like to know who actually took the photo and wouldn't be surprised if it was Monegan. Trooper Monegan was a bad, rogue cop and is still on duty, a threat to the community and a walking lawsuit waiting to happen. If anyone lacked ethics, it was Monegan, who had a duty to protect the public by getting rid of troopers like Wooten, and failed to do so.

What a bunch of morons I am not surprised to hear such stupid comments from people who would rather kill babies than terrorists.

As for changeisneeded comment....give me a break. First off...her residence will not be the white house. Second..if that all you are worried about??? How sad. Why don't you look at Obama's record (or lack of). I can't believe how many ignorant people are out there and will vote Obama in office. He is the biggest BS'er I have ever heard! No JFK!Change...get real...if you want to live in a socialist country. C'mon people...the facts are out there..READ THEM..and not from the liberal media! Just read about Chicago politics and you have your answer.

"WE HOWEVER DID NOTHING OF THE KIND. We instead bought up some of their bad assets. "

thequestionis...-Maybe you should keep up with the headlines...specifically the one in which "Bush Administration Recommends Buying Ownership Stake in Banks" is highlighted. "Ownership Stake" has nothing to do with buying "bad assets." It means buying banks. There's your Socialism.

Feel free to fall back on Republican (note-not "conservative") talking points in response.

Alaska has found power was hers to abuse.
But Palin continues to deny and refuse.
I'm so tired of her lies,
and her "Drill Baby!" cries,
Can't wait 'til November 4 when she is just old news.
