ORLANDO - For a guy portrayed on national television as a "washed up terrorist'' - with some 38 percent of all households in the nation's biggest markets watching last night - William Ayers has been remarkably silent.
It could be that the professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and erstwhile leader of the radical and militant Weather Underground in the 1960s knows that the line of attack that the campaign of Republican John McCain has been making against rival Barack Obama - the one tagging Obama with the "terrorist'' - is what's really "washed up'' at this point.
We've been watching the Web-site of the professor for any gleaning of his thoughts on this saga, during weeks in which he routinely has been named on the cable network news shows in first reference as a former terrorist. We didn't notice until today that he quietly posted a new musing the other day - the names of some of the books he has written. "Choose One,'' the prof writes on his blog:
To teach: The Journey of a Teacher (Teachers College Press)
A Kind and Just Parent: The Children of Juvenile Court (Beacon)
Teaching Toward Freedom: Moral Commitment and Ethical Action in the Classroom (Beacon)
City Kids/ City Schools (The New Press)
"Then make up your own mind, and send me a comment.''
Ayers didn't mention another other publication: Fugitive Days: A Memoir That's the story line that McCain wants to talk about.
McCain, who has attempted to help voters make up their minds about Obama and Ayers, said last night, during their final debate:
"I don't care about an old washed-up terrorist. But as Senator Clinton said in her debates with you, we need to know the full extent of that relationship. ''
"In fact, Mr. Ayers has become the centerpiece of Sen. McCain's campaign over the last two or three weeks,'' Obama replied. "This has been their primary focus.
"So let's get the record straight. Bill Ayers is a professor of education in Chicago. Forty years ago, when I was 8 years old, he engaged in despicable acts with a radical domestic group. I have roundly condemned those acts.
"Ten years ago he served and I served on a school reform board that was funded by one of Ronald Reagan's former ambassadors and close friends, Mr. Annenberg. Other members on that board were the presidents of the University of Illinois, the president of Northwestern University, who happens to be a Republican, the president of The Chicago Tribune, a Republican- leaning newspaper. Mr. Ayers is not involved in my campaign. He has never been involved in this campaign. And he will not advise me in the White House.''
The post-debate polls show that not many people are too concerned about this entire question, which suggests that McCain may have wasted the better part of a few weeks on a "washed up'' question.
What do you think?

Comments
I'd like to know if Ayers picked Obama to co-chair this committee of far more qualified individuals because he knew he would spread the money to the same community organizing groups they both had supported when Obama was a community organizer in Chicago. Since Obama did exactly that, this appears to be the foundation of the Obama political organization, which later made more and more expansive strategic alliances. I'd also like to know if the object of this political organization is a paternalistic, authoritarian, collectivist, government-controlled economy with goals of redistributing wealth to compensate for perceived inequities and/or injustices, past or present. These seem reasonable questions that our enlightened media seems incapable of articulating.

McCain's campaign is washed up. They have spent all their efforts trying to paint a negative portrait of Obama while failing to produce a positive message about their own campaign. I certainly would have picked McCain over Bush or Gore in 2000, but after watching him kiss up to Bush to get the nomination and then dive head first into the gutter with a Karl Rove style campaign, I wouldn't vote for him for any government office. Ever.

McCain basically discredited his own campaigns use of Ayers with his comment, and then gave Obama the opportunity to explain the whole thing away. This went on the whole night - McCain brought up a complaint, and Obama explained or diffused it calmly. It's like McCain was helping Obama the whole night, in rebutting in front of America, McCain's own negative campaign strategy.
McCain is either getting ready to endorse Senator Obama, or he's wholly incompetent, or he really doesn't have his heart in this stupid negativity that he knows to be without really legs.

Negative campaigning is also known as revealing truth's about the opposition. When one candidate constantly hides his past associations only to reject them when exposed to the public "Oh, that's not the XXX I knew", makes many wonder exactly who that person truely is and who will he disassociate himself from next to gain political points or simply not go down the scum bowl with his good friends and associates?
McBush you say - parroting the Obama mantra?
OAyers I say. OJones, OWright, OStroger, OSoros, the list is long and slimey.

If John McCain's campaign is washed up, then why is he only trailing Obama by 2% in the Gallup Poll, which is the poll that traditionally favors Democrats. Talk about empty rhetoric - Obama is a study in the tactic! Although he wasn't born until 1961, he is a classic 60s liberal who thinks government is the answer to everything. This election is not over and won't be until the last vote has been counted.

SamMcGowan, stop making things up. There's no poll that has them only 2% apart. They range from 6 to 12 depending on which poll.

Oh, I see Sam, you're coming from Drudge. Who actually is reporting on a new poll that Gallup just recently added, which only takes into account previous voters. Absolutely no input from people who are newly registered. This is NOT the poll that they normally do, which is at 6% still. Go to Gallup.com for more details - don't rely on Drudge for your facts.
If that kind of data makes you feel warm and fuzzy, more power to you.

I support John Mccain ansd his forward thinking Socialist ideals. With the guidence of President McCain we can end the power of the Capitailist banking tyrants. McCain has the plan to do this. Between nationalizing every homeowners mortgage, and Government ownership of the banks, we can put control of our financial system exactly where it belongs: in the hands of a wise powerfull and paternalistic Government. Once the power of the Capitalist bankers is broken, the rest of the economy will follow. McCain has shown that he knows that our economy cannot continue on the Free market path. He will usher in a new era of wise and benovelent socialism. True believers in socialism have only one choice in this election. John Sidney McCain Socialist for President!

What is BS, is that they always say "pal-ing around with a former terrorist". Did they go golfing all the time and go out for drinks? Not that I'm aware of. Anyone???

Interesting that Columbia University alumnus Barack Obama was in New York at the same time as, guess who? Bill Ayers, our favorite domestic terrorist! Obama graduated from Columbia in 1983, but stayed in New York another two years; while Ayers attended Bank Street College (located near Columbia), earning a M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education there in 1984. Ayers continued his studies at Columbia and completed his Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction in 1987, but it is unclear whether he resided in New York while doing his doctoral research, since from 1984 to 1988 his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, worked for the prestigious Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin (rich family connections are always helpful, even when you're a leftist radical). My guess would be that the Ayers couple resided together in Chicago from 1984, ...which is where Obama arrived in June of 1985. Three years later (Fall 1988) Obama entered Harvard Law School, but the next summer he returned to Chicago where he worked as a summer associate at, you guessed it, the law firm of Sidley & Austin. That's where he met his wife, Michelle, who became an associate at the firm, just as Bernardine Dohrn was offered an adjunct professorship at Northwestern Law School.
Of course these are mere coincidences... So, let's all just go Disney and sing: "IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL...".
