MIAMI - At a packed rally at Florida International University in Miami, Cindy McCain repeated one of her most controversial lines this afternoon. "And yes," she told the screaming, pom-pom waving crowd. "I have always been proud of my country."

The line is a reference to something Michelle Obama said during the primaries. "For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback," said Obama, taking heat for the remark.

Cindy McCain, who had just seen Michelle Obama say those words on television, when she walked into a rally earlier this year and said, "I have always been proud of my country."

Her response created its own firestorm, with Cindy McCain's words played endlessly on cable television.

The comment, with its implication that Michelle Obama had never been proud of her country before, set off a small furor. Taking the stage to introduce her husband, McCain said something that caught the media's attention: "I am proud of my country. I don't know about you, if you heard those words earlier, I am very proud of my country," she said, with more bite than usual.

Despite many people's assumption that her words had been devised by a campaign strategist, she insists they were spontaneous. "You have to remember, I have a son" in Iraq, she said. "It just spilled out of my mouth, and then I got back on the bus and I thought, 'Oh my God, what have I done?' I thought, 'Oh, I should never have opened my mouth. How did that happen? I'll put duct tape over it.' "

McCain, who steers clear of news on the presidential race and is unused to the press paying attention to her comments, was surprised at the reaction.

With supporters like these racists it is no wonder that she is picking up this line of attack again:

Actually, the line Mrs. Obama said is, "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."

That one word changes the statement quite a bit.

Too bad her husband admits he didn't love this country for over half his life:

I don't want a President who didn't love his country for the first 41 years of his life. I don't want a President who grew up surrounded by people making great sacrifices for this Nation, yet never felt the same love they did. I don't want a President who recieved one of the finest educations available, paid for by this nation, yet was never gratetful enough to feel love for the nation that gave him that opportunity.

She was proud of America when blacks were being shot with water cannons and refused entry into Public Schools??? Those scenes made her proud? And I left out mentioning the darker and more violent events in America's racist past.

We all know that Cindly is very proud to be an american and very proud of her country. Go Cindy!

Patricia is right, thanks to endless loops on the media, we all know the quote by heart.
By the Way Nickel,
Who told you Obama's education was paid by this country. He went to all private schools on scholarship and with his families contribution. Don't pretend to know the man and his feelings. If you don't want to vote don't subject the rest of us to foolish criticism and conjecture.

When you are worth $100 million it's easy to be proud of any and everything

I'm not impressed

Patricia, I agree with your sentiment but the line was accurately quoted. Michelle repeated the quote in a 'stump speech' of sorts and both versions have been confirmed.

Pulling this chestnut out now is more than a little pathetic.

Yes, go Cindy. go away.

John and Cindy McCain used to be heros of mine (despite their adulterous affair), but during the course of this campaign McCain has morphed into something ugly: he's gone from American hero to American character assassin in just a few short months. The old McCain would refuse to share the same stage with the cowardly McCain we see now. I've lost all respect for the man.

Is Cindy McCain proud we enslaved blacks? Is Cindy McCain proud we forced Indians onto reservations? Is she proud we denied women the right to vote for over a century? Is she proud that blacks could be forced to ride in the back of the bus? Is she proud that we torture prisoners?

I love my country, but I'm not so proud as to ignore its very real faults.

If only she could be proud of her husband. If only any of us could.

Cindy is so "patriotic" that she maintains a multimillionaire's lifestyle by selling cheap beer to working class Americans. Conservative Christian voters have given this lady (and her husband's mean-spirited running mate) a pass. And it's a shame. And it's a sham.

Interesting. The first time she said it, it was possible Mrs McCain had just heard it and her response was an uber-patriotic outburst.

Now? Tacky.

Let the McCain camp say what they will, thoses that support Obama/Biden just need to VOTE, early or on 11/04/08. Then we can let the world know how PROUD we are.

Barack Obama is a proud American who has spent his adult life in public service and in American government -- when he could have been earning a huge salaries at prestigious law firms. He has described his life story, more times than anyone can count, as following the uniquely AMERICAN tradition where anyone can pull himself up by his bootstraps to do anything he or she wants. His mother's side of the family includes a proud WWII veteran and his own mother who also fought to improve people's lives. Obama wouldn't spend his life in American government if he were anit-American! It's a typical Republican move to try to assail the Patriotism of anyone who opposes their brand of politics. THAT is un-American, in my opinion.

For 8 years, we've been beaten over the head with "see things my way or you're un-American". THAT is as un-American as it gets. ...and the Republican way hasn't been working out very well for the average American.

Claiming "my opponent isn't a proud American" is the oldest most tired trick in the book -- and we Americans are tired of being tricked.

In America, political participation is patriotic. Having more than one political party is American.

Michelle Obama is an amazing woman with a remarkable American story. Michelle remains gracious toward Cindy McCain even in the face her anti-Michelle innuendo. Cindy McCain is a multi-millionairess who is probably as proud of American as the next gal, but mostly she wants her husband to win this election -- and (like her husband) will apparently say or imply anything to make it happen.

Actually, with the information about torture being given today, I am not so proud of my country today. Sorry.

It's very unconscionable for Cindy McCain, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, could admonish a sensitivity that Michele Obama expressed during her elation! Their feelings will never be the same.

Hey, I am proud of my country but that does not mean that it is not without faults.
We could go on and on here and come back to comparing the good versus the bad.
And, it would spell out that although one loves one country it and is proud of it, it is not proud of what happens in it.
Don't take things out of text.
Cindy and Michele both have right to their words.
Now, let's get to work on the wrongs and fix them.
Sure ain't here with this pride thing.

Was John McCain proud of Cindy when he yanked her out of the hospital after she OD'd on the drugs she stole from her charity??

One of the greatest things about America is our constitutional right to be not proud of our country at any time, and then our ability to work towards improving it.

And Jill, you might consider adding an editor's note to the article to set the record straight as to Michelle Obama's actual line. It changes the entire premise of the story, because Cindy is not responding to a quote, but responding to what she knows is a misquote.

Cindy McCain is a disgrace. First she does that "who, me? well hush my mouth!" bit - all that was missing was the Palin wink - and then she repeats that line endlessly.

What was that line by Roxie in 'Chicago'? Soimething about shooting off the gun by accident 6 times?

In 1988, Dukakis was asked about his wife's past drug problem. Why hasn't McCain been asked about Cindy's past drug problem?

Cindy McCain seems too proud.
