If they told you how they spent this money, they might have to kill you.
So all the Director of National Intelligence is reporting today, as required by law, is the aggregate amount that Congress appropriated for the National Intelligence Program during the 2008 fiscal year:
$47.5 billion.
"Beyond the disclosure of the top-line figure,'' DNI Mike McConnell reports, "there will be no other disclosures of currently classified budget information because such disclosures could harm national security.''
In a $3-trillion federal budget -- which is running a deficit of more than $400 billion -- that doesn't seem like too much for intelligence, does it?
So long as we got our money's worth.

If we want our money's worth, we should ask the federal government to set up a low cost service to have our telephone conversations played back for us in case we forget what gets said. They're going to record them anyway.

Yeah right, $$ well spent. 70% of it goes to private defense contractors...the same contractors who would benefit from strategic decisions made based on reports made by the intelligence community.

I don't know; That amount could run a couple pretty good sized secret wars with plenty left over.
