Is McCain endangering Obama?: The Swamp

The Swamp

by James Oliphant

History has proven that some Americans don't take to social change with grace. And with the troubled economy, the wars, and the now real prospect of the first African-American president, there is, in pockets of the country, real confusion, dread and fear.

John McCain's presidential campaign encountered some of that Thursday, judging from accounts in the Washington Post this morning detailing a McCain rally in Wisconsin. Reports the Post:

In recent days, a campaign that embraced the mantra of "Country First" but is flagging in the polls and scrambling for a way to close the gap as the nation's economy slides into shambles has found itself at the center of an outpouring of raw emotion rare in a presidential race.

"There's 26 days and people are looking at the very serious possibility that there's a chance that Obama might get in, and they don't like that," said Ian Eltrich, 28, as he filed out of the crowded sports complex.

"I'm mad! I'm really mad!" another man said, taking the microphone and refusing to surrender it easily, even when McCain tried to agree with him.

"I'm not done. Lemme finish, please," he said after a standing ovation. "When you have Obama, [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and the rest of the hooligans up there going to run the country, we have to have our head examined.

"It's time that you two represent the rest of us. So go get 'em."

The writer Andrew Sullivan, blogging for The Atlantic, goes further, comparing the situation to the furor in the 1990s in Israel over the Palestinian peace process that resulted in the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and suggesting that the McCain campaign is putting Obama's life in danger.

Sullivan wrote Friday:

There was always going to be a point of revolt and panic for a core group of Americans who believe that Obama simply cannot be president -- because he's black or liberal or young or relatively new. This is that point. As the polls suggest a strong victory, the Hannity-Limbaugh-Steyn-O'Reilly base are going into shock and extreme rage. McCain and Palin have decided to stoke this rage, to foment it, to encourage paranoid notions that somehow Obama is a "secret" terrorist or Islamist or foreigner. These are base emotions in both sense of the word.

But they are also very very dangerous. This is a moment of maximal physical danger for the young Democratic nominee. And McCain is playing with fire. If he really wants to put country first, he will attack Obama on his policies -- not on these inflammatory, personal, creepy grounds. This is getting close to the atmosphere stoked by the Israeli far right before the assassination of Rabin.

For God's sake, McCain, stop it. For once in this campaign, put your country first.

It is unfortunate, that there are those politicians, and their supporters, that want to win, at all costs. That same mentality, destroyed the political career of former Senator Max Cleland, a fine American, a Veteran of the Vietnam war and a casualty, three limbs sacrificed, for our nation. Three limbs lost, for America, and they called into question, his patriotism. That was the campaign that brought Senator Saxby Chambliss to our Senate. It was he, who benefitted from the character-assassination of former Senator Max Cleland. It is that mentality that could bring about the dastardly deed of real assassination, if the McCain-Palin Republicans continue to hammer Senator Obama, on an association, on an acquaintance. For pete' sake, he was six years old, when the Weathermen were running amuck, in America !! the Bush-McCain Republicans owe America and Senator Obama an apology, for the deplorable conduct they have displayed in the last several weeks of this campaign !! To incite a mob mentality in the midst of a stressful economic situation, only exacerbates the problem, but they, the Bush-McCain Republicans, knew that !! Thay aren't that stupid !! At least, I hope they aren't !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

It is turning really scary. McCain needs to quit it, or someone is going to get seriously hurt. Campaign on the issues, that is what the American people care about, especially the independents who he needs in order to win. Rallying to the base isn't going to help at this point.

Let's just write in Ahmadinejad.

ACORN for Ahmadinejad/Obama 08!

Yay!

Give us a break already. It's not the color of Obama's skin that people are afraid of, but rather the fact that it's TOO THIN, along with that of most of his supporters. Nobody wants to hear 4 long years of whining and crying.

the upsetting thing is that if mccain wasn't so sadly and pathetically desperate right now, he wouldn't be waging this dangerous and disrespectful war of lies right now. john mccain is a better human being than that in the good parts of his soul, but the politics of "win by any means necessary" has turned a once-decent and honorable man into a sham of his former self.

it's sad to see a man destroy the integrity he once had. as an independently-minded voter, i used to have respect for john mccain, but i'm afraid that his embrace of the truly ugly underbelly of american society has forced me to say goodbye to him. so long, john.,

You guys are mentally ill. Seriously. Get over yourselves, and Obama for that matter. There's no "mob mentallity", and most of these media reports are false. Obama is probably going to win, and he's not going to be assasinated, or deposed in a coup, or any of the other dellusional things you guys dream up. And we on the right will survive as well.

So now they are coming out of the woodwork.. Small minded republican supporters - the true base of mccain's campaign. I think this what bush's 28 percent of hard core supporters have been, all along... This is who the talk shows have been talking to. This is the fruits of their labors.. Pathetic.

Nobody wants to hear 4 long years of whining and crying.

Correct. We want 4 more years of lies and misleading like we got from the republicans and their leader....Bush.

How is McCain "endangering" Obama? Your blog entry doesn't answer that question. McCain was trying to get this man to surrender the microphone, and the emotions that would endanger Obama have everything to do with anger about Democrats being in control of everything. That doesn't originate with McCain, and blaming him seems like a clever way of putting him on the defensive for something that is not his fault. Furthermore, Andrew Sullivan is a left wing idealogue, and you broadcast his comments like he's some kind of authority. This blog entry is pretty irresponsible.

After reading the recent, hateful, frothing at the mouth postings of the "Limbaughicans" (I should trademark that); I fear for Obama's safety.

These people have been so brainwashed by Fox News and Limbaugh that they'll believe anything they're told.

"There's no "mob mentallity", and most of these media reports are false."

There's videotape of these things. I fail to see how you can say that the videotape is false. They're really starting to get ridiculous.

And I thought McCain said he wanted a respectful campaign, one about the issues? Or is that only if the people agree with his ideas on the issues, and when it's clear they don't, he throws that "respectful campaign" right out the window?

This is exactly the type of liberal dung I have been expecting to come up, and Oliphant and Sullivan are feeding it. "If you don't support Obama, you are a racist". Now they have stretched that to "now you're gonna get him killed".

Sorry to be blunt, but EVERY person who runs for President, sadly enough, becomes a possible target for such a thing. They know it, and I have to credit them for this (even Hillary), they accept it. But to claim that because the opposite party disagrees with someone's proposed policies is just so much over-the-top chutzpah. Obama has a questionable past; not to the extent that "foamers" think, but it is there. He has even admitted some of it in his books. McCain is no choirboy, either; the failure of his first marriage and the Keating 5 loom large over him.

Just because someone at a McCain rally is urging McCain to fight harder doesn't mean it paints a target on Obama. Consider the stuff coming out of Obama rallies regarding McCain, Palin (especially), and President Bush (MOST especially). Yet the MSM doesn't bring that up. It is the obvious "in-the-tank" mentality for Obama by 90% of the media that frustrates the GOP; not the color of the nominee.

Every president's life is in danger. It's the nature of the job.

People have a right to be angry at the prospect of Obama getting elected, because he would likely take the country in a very wrong direction. All this "don't fan the flames", "stop the smears" business is just an attempt (very clever and polished) to stifle opposition and paint opponents of Obama as radical zealots or racists rather than what most of them are--informed voters who don't like his policies or the pseudo-messianic status that has been conferred on this man.

And to Andrew Sullivan, the polls DON'T show a strong victory. Where is he getting this? A percentage point or two is hardly a mandate--may Obama take that to heart (unlike Bush, sadly) if he does manage to hoodwink enough people into electing him.

It would not surprise me one bit if the McCain/Palin hatred filled fascist like rallies lights some wacko's fuse to try and assasinate Obama.

They need to stop. If it happens, both should be federally prosecuted inciting violence. Both should resign and go to prison.

Please let's let people who do any wrong doing take responsibility for themselves. Quit blaming everyone else for something they did not do.

There is always going to be mudslinging in elections, but if there is anything done to Obama, let it be blamed on the person or people who actually did the deed.

Make people accountable. Please stop blaming others.

It's so very tiring already.

So Elmer McGantry finally finds the bottom of that bottomless pit of right wing rage....

Look, all I know is that someone at a recent Palin rally shouted "Kill him!" referring to Obama, and Palin did not do the proper thing and say, "Hey, now wait a minute ... that's not what we're about here."

Even if she didn't hear the guy at the time, she has surely heard about it by now, and still hasn't said anything.

In contrast, no one at an Obama or Biden rally has even said "Kill him/her!" in reference to McCain or Palin -- and if that did happen, I'm sure the candidate on the stage would say something against it.

WOW-incredible how some people just can't see what is happening. Or they just don't want to see. Truly sad.

I agree that this new "strategy" is not working. It's similar to Hillary's division that was created within the Democratic party during the primary. By no measure do I believe that John McCain is racist or prejudice; I do, however, believe that he is using the hate and prejudice of some within his party to win the election. It's extremely irresponsible and not effective as a tactic At this point, he is embarrassing himself and his campaign with this new rhetoric.

Let's talk about Palin's husband and his ties to the Alaskan Independence Party headed by infamous Joseph Vogle who wanted Alaska to separate from the continental United States and their main theme is that "Alaska's induction into the United States in 1959 is against NATO laws." They want to separate from the rest of the country and have their own bylaws. Palin herself has welcomed them to Alaska as Governor. Her husband was a member for seven years. The founder of this radical organization clearly stated that any means necessary would be used to separate Alaska from the continental United States including violence and he himself died in a plastics explosives deal gone bad. Nice choice for Vice President there. No wonder the Republican party is pandering to the "White Trash" element because that is what their leaders are.

Hate, deceit and deception it appears, are Republican values. Go get 'em John and Sarah, we see what you are made of and it is vile.

Pay no attention to the Global Meltdown behind the curtin.

Is The Swamp endangering the concept of ethical journalism? Of course.

Obama's voting record, list of freinds, and resume do more harm than anything the McCain campaign could do.

This is ridiculus. Some people would say that Obama being elected is endangering the whole country. Corrupt chicago politician, horrible friends and mentors, a do nothing state senator for 8 years, lots of talk with no substance and clueless followers. I don't like McCain - but he's still a better choice than Obama.
This country is divided. I wouldn't say a revolt is beyond comprehension. Hillary would have been the better choice for everyone.

If Obama was talking about McCain at a rally and someone yelled "kill him" or "terrorist" republicans would be outrages and it would be all over the news. If people don't like Obama or disagree with him that's fine, but that kind of hate talk has no place in either campaign.

McCain and Palin are VERY scary and desperate people. They promote hate and violence at a time when Americans need to be pulling together to get through the tough times ahead. If McCain and Palin really cared about this country they would put an end to their hate rallys and focus on the problems this country is currently facing.

Angel,

Here's the issue. The other day McCain, at a rally in New Mexico, got his audience worked up and people in the crowd was yelling terrorist. In the video that is all over the place you can hear it. At another event led by Palin, the was the report that someone in the crowd yelled "kill him".

While getting people worked up is part of the process, these candidates need to rein it in when it gets out of control. Senator Obama has done that throughout his campaign, both in the primaries and during this general election cycle. He also starts with respect for McCain for his service, and he has not gotten into the vitriol that seems to be plaguing the McCain campaign. I understand that McCain and Palin are behind, but there needs to be some sense of decency here in this process. This is no way for McCain to win the swing voters that sit in the middle undecided.

Angel-

when someone shouts "Kill him!" at a Palin revival/rally, and the Good Governess does nothing to put a stop to that, that's the kind of thing James and Andrew are talking about. And your head-in-the-sand attitude does nothing to stop that sentiment, either.

Let's face it. The minority of Americans who believe Obama is a terrorist, Muslim, and a communist are idiots. Yes idiots. I was undecided and have voted Republican in the past but there is no way I can be associated with such a dishonorable campaign, a joke of a vice-presidential candidate and I especially don't want those idiots who I just mentioned cheering with me if McCain wins. The populist politicians should form their own party and then they can vote for all the pom-pom queens, "Joe Six-Packs" they want. Although, God help us if they win.

Just when you think the Trib and the media can stoop no lower they run this contrived story. Barry Hussein doesn't need to be afraid, the people of America need to be afraid. This arrogant, elitist, socialist fraud can't run anything. He can't speak without a teleprompter or put together policies without his puppeteer Axelrod. Wake up people, Oberfuhrer Nobama is wrong for everyone.

It was only a matter of time before McCan'towacks showed their true colors. I guess living in a city where most people finish kindergarten has spoiled me. I thought idiots like that only existed in Harold and Kumar movies.

Are people here really trying to defend those who are yelling "kill him" at political rallies by saying every Presidential candidate is in danger? Have our politics become that debased? Have these people really lost any sense of ethics, morality or justice? Are they that twisted by anger and fear? What kind of nation have we become?

Hatred is not a family value.

I think "hooligan" is a softer word for "authoritarian." Political rallies are not tea parties and not every citizen is a master of public debate, but this seems pretty mild to me. Let's not be too quick to threaten free speech in the interest of decorum (or under that guise to eliminate dissent).

From an independent voter, I must say that McCain and his campaign are bringing a very negative light over this campaign. We, the voters, are more interested in what these two candidates are going to try and do to heal the major ills of this country. I do not care that Obama may live in a neighborhood with a certain guy, go to church with a certain guy, or what his middle name may be. What matters to me is has he been arrested, indicted, or legally accused of some sort of crime within his professional career. To all of that the response is no. So, to attempt to divert attention away from the issues and onto very irrelevent matters is highly unpresidential. Moreover, to cloak such things under morality or christianity is very heathenistic. If Obama wanted to, he could go negative and bring up McCain's associations with the Keating Five. Moreover, for all of the religious zealots following McCain, how about a nice little commercial chronicalling McCain's purported infedility in his first marraige. Let's face it, both candidates have things that may or may not need to explain. However, the reality of it all is that none of that stuff has affected their job or ability to lead. Therefore, why should it now? Let's get back to the issues, and decide this race not on color or stoked religious emotions. Rather, base your vote on who you truly believe has the interest and desire to fix the ills not of just the well off but also the down downtrodden.

Anyone who refers to Obama's past associations with terrorists and radicals are telling the truth and shouldn't be asked to stop it because it's too dangerous for Obama. If Obama didn't associate with any of those people mentioned, then he and his supporters have something to whine about. As for someone above advising that people want to hear about the issues -- this campaign seems as though it has been going on for three years. We have heard about the issues, over and over again. One of the big issues that still remains unresolved is that people are not convinced that Obama's associations with radical people did not have a negative influence on him.

Please let's let people who do any wrong doing take responsibility for themselves. Quit blaming everyone else for something they did not do.

There is always going to be mudslinging in elections, but if there is anything done to Obama, let it be blamed on the person or people who actually did the deed.

Posted by: klickers | October 10, 2008 12:39 PM

Klickers... there's mudslinging and then there's the kind of stuff that can reasonably insite violence.

Americans literally want to KILL terrorists. McCain and Palin are trying to paint Obama as a terrorist. It is dangerous!

Listen, if you walk up to another parent outside of a high school and frantically start screaming "OH MY GOD!! DID YOU HEAR THE NEWS!! Mr. Smith, the English teacher raped your daughter and she's at the hospital!!!" Then Mr. Smith walks out the door and the parent attacks and kills him, even though the truth is that you just personally don't like the way Mr. Smith teaches English, is that fair game? Can you turn around and say "Please let's let people who do any wrong doing take responsibility for themselves. Let it be blamed on the person or people who actually did the deed." and take no responsibility for the attack, like your post suggests? Listen. People are screaming "KILL HIM!" and "HE'S A TERRORIST!!" in response to Palin and McCain's obvious storytelling of Obama=Terrorist.

That is what's happening here. McCain and Palin are literally building a case that Barack Obama is some kind've muslim terrorist Manchurian Candidate and the idea of that WILL make a lot've people (if they believe it, which obviously some do) want him gone, at any cost.

It's outright dangerous and deplorable.

Here is some history on what happened during 2004 at a hearing where republicans where asking for more regulation on Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac and the Dems arguing nothing is wrong. Take a step back and look at the facts. Ignore the political banter, learn the truth, and for those who believe in the Obama economic plan that is top on his web site ask yourself in this economy who is going to have windfall profits and what is his backup plan.

Are you kidding me? Some people get worked up at a campaign rally and we're supposed to be worried that it will lead to assassination?

I agree (and worry) that because Barack Obama is a black man that some virulent, unhinged racist will decide to take him out in some misguided attempt to ensure white hegemony over the Presidency. But, does that mean that criticism is out of bounds of any black candidate? Are we to believe all critique of an ultra-liberal black man is predicated on racial prejudice?

The thrust of Andrew Sullivan, who deeply dislikes McCain, is that McCain's criticism is somehow encouraging racists to murder Barack Obama. I don't believe for a second, nor should any thinking person, that people capable of such heinous acts are influenced by normal overblown political discourse. That gives them way too much credit.

Let's face it. Obama won't be running the country anyway. It'll be the Chicago Machine with the two brothers calling the shots. If Iran doesn't play nice we'll just take away their garbage cans and let an overpriced contract for a huge wrought iron fence to "contain" them.

People are not interested in the truth any longer. Only interested in what they want. The truth is that Obamma has no record and refuses to take a position on any important subject. He never gives a straight answere to any question asked and has not told us how he intends on acomplishing his "agenda". Be careful what you ask for inlife because you might just get it. The media led us to believe the Bush would never be re-elected but look at what happened. The fact that Obamma supporters dismiss people that like Sarah Palin as the redneck or bubba vote, show not only ignorance but are engaging in the hate and discontent that is the democratic party. Well, speaking for my fellow rednecks and bubbas, don't think we are too stupid to find the polling place and vote. We will be able to tear ourselves away from our guns and bibles long enough to go and vote. Don't beleive the polls. People who don't beleive Obamma will make a good president don't want to be labeled as a racist. When the curtain closes and nobody is watching, you may find hard core democrats voting the other way. It not that alot of people would not vote for a black man for president, just not this black man. And by the way, President Regan was shot (for those of us old enough to remember) and race played no part in that. The world is full of crazy people.

This column is brought to you by the same people that brought us Florida Chads 2000, and Diebold 2004.

If the liberal reprobates are so worried about this, why don't they take the same path as they do with our military....WITHDRAW.

Thought so.

loch,
Interesting you should site Huffington Post. Years ago, before I retired I read Ariana Huffington's book, 'Pigs at the Trough' [How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption is Undermining America]. I said to any of my Union buddies who would listen, "why aren't people enraged about this"? "What can we do", they said. And they had a point. As residents of the reddest state in the Union, a state who's populace collectively worshipped Bush, we were effectively disenfranchised. I am damn sick of this Red State vs. Blue State crap. It's time to lose the Electoral College. And to all you wing nuts who think Huffington is the great Satan, hows your 101K doing?

I really believe that the reason the market is doing so bad is because people who have their money in the market are afraid of an Obama presidency. Obama just doesn't get what America is all about. He change our country from a Capitalism to Socialism. He has no clue what a code of honor and how to be truthful. I can't believe how gullible the democrat are. They actually believe that he was in Rev. Wrights chruch for over 20 years and never new he hated white people. His years of association with Bill Ayers and he never knew he was a known terriorist. Come on!!! Now he is trying to make us believe that he was never involved with ACORN, when it is well documented that not only did he train them but he was also their attorney. This man is likely to turn our country over to his buddies like Chavez, Pultin etc. The only man who has proven that he truly loves our country is John McCain.

The McCain/Palin ticket is putting the Islamic extremists to shame in their ability to incite hatred through name calling. Now we see it's the republican ticket that has the real terrorists running.

The rednecks who planned to kill Obama in Denver were not charged with planning an assasination, even though they freely admitted their plan. The student who hacked Palin's YAHOO account (not a secure government account and never should have been used for government business) is facing potentially FIVE years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Andrew Sullivan is a left wing idealogue, and you broadcast his comments like he's some kind of authority. This blog entry is pretty irresponsible. Irresponsible is painting Obama as palling around with a terrorist when you quote from the New York Times. Palin's comments are sickening. I thought we were all Americans?
Some of the worst moments in American History have happened under Lil' Bush. 9/11, Katrina and now the housing/banking catastrophe. This man has ruined our reputation around the world.

"I'm mad! I'm really mad!" another man said, taking the microphone and refusing to surrender it easily, even when McCain tried to agree with him.

"I'm not done. Lemme finish, please," he said after a standing ovation. "When you have Obama, [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and the rest of the hooligans up there going to run the country, we have to have our head examined." I can't say I'm surprised some knucklehead cheesehead would say something like this. Hooligans? He should look at Cheney and Bush as the hooligans. They've driven our country into the ground. They're the most shady/corrupt group to lead our country since Nixon. Oh, and that's right, Cheney was on Nixon's staff too. It's time for republicans to realize that their people screwed up and we need new leadership to steer us back in the right direction.

"Furthermore, Andrew Sullivan is a left wing idealogue"

Bwahahahaha! Just like Kathleen Parker and George Will, right?

Any one defending McCain and Palin on this issue are truly ignorant. And Angel, Andrew Sullivan is a Conservative. He happens to be a Libertarian Conservative which is the classic definition of what a Conservative should be. George Bush and John McCain are both socially and morally corrupt and both are far from being the true Conservative politician.

Obama is a puppet for the democratic party. He's a joke! This clown will ruin this country

The threat of twisted words is critical in this whole thing. As much and the polished demeanor of Obama and the slippery way he has of dancing around the questions give thought of major cover-ups in the future should he become president....McCain has it hard because of everything that is happening with the economy right now and it didn't unravel or get bad under just one administration...it might look that way. McCain is a "proven" American and fought for the very freedoms that we want to keep. Keep our heads on straight and vote with intelligence and not emotion. We are in for some real surprises and we need a leader that truly can lead, and not just talk nicey, nicey.

What troubles me about the campaign that McCain-Pallin are running is that they are not focusing on what is happening in front of their own eyes. I have seen and heard more about Barack Obama's past than the economic crisis occurring right now. To be blunt, I don't really care if Barack Obama served on a committee with a former 60's radical/ "terrorist", nor do I care about "Troopergate" involving Gov. Palin. I care about the future. The negativity and backward looking of the McCain-Palin Campaign makes me want to look elsewhere, and that leads me only to Obama. Cut the crap already, and lets fix the country!

What about the predications of race riots if obama doesn't win? I'm sick of reading all this one sided nonsense.

To Angel,

Andrew Sullivan is not a left wing idealogue, unless you consider Adolf Hitler a centrist. He's a conservative libertarian. Get your facts straight. Right-wingers like you like to spit out gibberish to bolster their case, facts be damned. Iraq ring any bells? For the benefit of others on this blog, I felt I should set the record straight. The article about McCain endangering Obama by whipping the nuts into a froth was written by a right-winger.

The more I hear from McCain lately, the less I like McCain.

Buzzcut--You're wrong, I've seen it first hand out here in Bush Country. Don't underestimate the power of fear and ignorance, Rove doesn't, he plays to it.

I watched the videos from recent McCain Palin rallies and was immediately disturbed by the over-zealous fervor emanating from the crowd with forceful expressions of anger, calling for Obama's assasination...all the while, McCain looks on and confirms, accepts, nods in approval. This type of blind, unjustified anger has not been seen, EVER, in my knowledge, during a presidential rally. I have to believe it has only to do with the trivial factors that include the color of Obama's skin, as well as his name. IF he were a white man, you would NOT be witnessing such frightening outbursts! These crowds need to WAKE UP from their ignorance and start thinking about the bigger picture. And the most frightening part is how many "sheep" are being led to their slaughter by the McCain camp because they are being blinded by hate, and falling into McCain's trap?

"I'm not done. Lemme finish, please," he said after a standing ovation. "When you have Obama, [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and the rest of the hooligans up there going to run the country, we have to have our head examined.--

SO TRUE

Oliphant is such a partisan hack.

But, hey, if Obama would be safer if all criticism of him (and his methods, and his political background) were silenced- LET THE SILENCING BEGIN !!

People like Limbaugh, Hannity, Palin etc... are trying to inspire anger and hate by association. There are some people who can't differentiate between association and active involvement, mostly because they are dupes and they think everything they are hearing from the hatemongers listed above is true. These are the people who if angered enough will turn to violence. We have seen this in the past and will continue to do so as long as people like Mccain who now has the ability to put a stop to it simply wont. It says volumes about McCains character or lack thereof.

Someone please tell me how Obama's volunteering to serve on some non-profit boards with Ayers is problematic? Weren't they serving good causes? Should Obama have excused himself from serving this cause even though Ayers was on it? These comments are undoubtedly coming from supposed Christians but they sound awefully hypocritical to me. As for Rev. Wright, did he not have the right to express himself by saying "God Damn America". He was expressing frustration. If you don't agree with Obama's policies fine, that's respectable. But all these extraneous associations are mind boggling. There's not many people who haven't at one time or another associated with someone they disagree with.

Criticism of a candidate is part of the political process. But when crowds at a McCain or Palin rally start calling Obama a terrorist and saying kill him, that is going entirely too far, and that IS dangerous. McCain/Palin should disavow that type of behavior now, before it goes much farther.

One other thing to think of. The crowd at the Clearwater Rally was incited almost to the point of physically attacking the press there. How long before they turn on people they consider to be 'elites'? O'Reilly called for riots in Denver during the DNC. This kind of rhetoric only pours gasoline on the fire.

Some McCain supporters in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utXFkXwaG7A

quote from "Dusty" above

"I really believe that the reason the market is doing so bad is because people who have their money in the market are afraid of an Obama presidency."

If you really believe this then I feel sorry for your naivety. This Global economic crisis has absolutly nothing to do with who may or may not be elected president of the United States. You need to educate yourself and stop believing the rhetoric.

Just as republicans like to call themselves capitalists when the profits are pouring in, they like to call themselves for democracy when they expect to win. McCain calls himself a history buff. There are several sad periods in history that I can recall when I see his 'supporters' at his rallies. None of those times turned out good in the near term.

What a ridiculous assertion to say that my candidates campaign is putting Obama at risk. Its so wild an assertion that its very difficult to respond to you: a biblical proverb says, "'answer not a fool", so I really have no answer for you, fool. I am an American of color, born on south side of Chicago, and a very proud conservative, former military, Republican. I have no answer for Obama either! A fool leading the foolish, Obama.

Right ... because the last 8 we've been partying and celebrating the genius we've had running the country ... are you serious? The more "experienced" candidate and his brilliant VP pick are the ones in the news every day being criticized because they're so out of touch. What I don't understand is why this madness is even necessary? What are you saying to the democrats you want to work with and the independents you're trying to convince to come to your side? Honestly, I don't think he knows how to stop it. He's created this monster, and it's becoming something he didn't anticipate, and now all he knows how to do is roll with it. Some choice in leadership ....

You're quoting Andrew Sullivan? Seriously, Andrew Sullivan? Has he received the documented proof that Trig is Sarah Palin's baby, yet?
Wow. Andrew Sullivan as the voice of reason. Wow. That's all I can say. Sorry to run, but I have to find my jaw: it just dropped right through the floor.

I really believe that the reason the market is doing so bad is because people who have their money in the market are afraid of an Obama presidency.

When you stub your toe, is it Obama's fault?

Seriously? the Stock market is because of Obama? Has nothing to do with the housing collaps which started years ago. Nothing to do with AIG, Lehman, WaMu, Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac melting down spectacularly... nothing to do with credit illiquidity.

Nope. It's all out've fear of Barack Obama. Bear Stearns just up and decided to call it quits because Barack Obama was ahead in the polls. Yup. That's what happened. Homeowners just said "why bother paying this mortgage and keeping a roof over my family, I mean, Barack Obama might be President, right?". Yup, that's gotta be it.

Morlon.

McCain/Palin Rallies are increasingly becoming Orwell's "Daily Hate"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/09/AR2008100903169.html?hpid=topnews\

They are actively encouraging this outpouring of fear and hate toward their fellow Americans. McCain and Palin have stooped to pure demogoguery. the country will pay the price for their amoral unbridled ambition. These wounds and rifts will take years to heal.

If you want to hate someone and are looking for a reason you will find it. The McCain/Palin campaign is crossing the line between hardball politics and gutter politics. They are starting to dishonor themselves, which is a shame, because John McCain has always been of man of honor and is someone who we have all respected. He has started down that slippery slope which you cannot climb back up.

Wow, talk about putting a spin on things. The guy in the video is upset tha Obama is going to waltz into the White House and this is somehow endangering Obama. Obama is the new George Bush.

we have to have our head examined.--

SO TRUE

We agree at last!

Neither Republiccans or Democrats did a good job coming up with an acceptable candidate.

This is the perfect year to vote third party! Vote Libertarian!

Stunning! And the world of sham experts are blaming overuse of credit derivitives. Someone give Dusty a nobel prize!

I might give this some merit, if there were in fact any evidence that this was actually happening. Say, for example, if a series of vicious, unfair attacks by the McCain camp on Obama created such a frenzy that it led to one of McCain's supporters hacking into Obama's personal email account. But of course this is not a story when the shoe is on the other foot.

I am hurting right now, two months out of work as an unemployed professional so I am really torn about which way to go with this presidential election. So, I am paying very close attention to the news right now.

I am of mixed ethnic background and grew up in the midst of American and Mexican culture. I think people should be judged on the content of their character, rather than any physical or other attribute that they were born with.

The more I read, watch, and listen the more I am amazed with this presidential election. We are finding out who Obama's friends really are, surprise! Hillary was bamboozled by this Chicago politician who rarely votes more than "present" if he's even there at all. I'm no fan of right wing attacks either, but I just find it amazing that much of the media seems to rooting for Obama, who seems more and more like a mysterious figure as the days go by. The media need to be more impartial. I think if Obama becomes president, he'll be like Carter, an ineffective one-term president. Notice how Hilary is now quiet. I think she's waiting for Obama to fail, one way or another. She is probably more qualified to be president than Obama is.

In any case, I hope to get a job soon suited to my talents. Pray the economy turns around soon!!!

Not McCain!

Not Obama!

Send McCain off to the ranch.

Give Obama a talk show.

If the Dems and the O-Man don't like the labels, change the politics to more properly reflect American views.

Putting lipstick on the left, doesn't make it the right.

Some of you need to listen to yourselves. No wonder we are in the bad shape we are in now. We have about as much respect for one another as the candidates who are trying to run this country. Regardless if you are voting for McCain or Obama, wrong is wrong. As someone who is trying to be a future leader of this country you should not stand back and allow such comments to go back and forth. That is telling me that he has no issue with these kind of opinions public or private. If he were to take office, who knows what kind of people would be in his cabinet. That is just an added risk to an already fragile nation, that I would not want to take.

Ken,

Keep up your spirits. It really is a lot farther to the bottom than we generally assume. Whatever happens, you will be the same person you are now and your human worth will not be diminished unless you let it. You can't control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond. You will succeed, no matter what. A lot of emotion is being stirred by economic conditions and political events, but in the end, we will all still be Americans and we will all succeed together. You are not alone.

I hope you don't mind, but I've taken the liberty of responding, since it seems you are a little uninformed:

"Can any Obama supporter provide any update on his records, if not, what is he hiding?

5. Selective Service Registration - Not released (untrue, they're available online)
6. Medical records - Not released (untrue, they're available online and the Obama campaign released this information during the primaries)
7. Illinois State Senate schedule - “not available” (untrue, they're available online and it's possible your internet connection timed out if you tried accessing them, which would have resulted in a "not available")
8. Law practice client list - Not released (untrue, they're available online and by contacting his prior firm)
9. Certified Copy of original Birth certificate - Not released (untrue, it's available online - for a small fee, and it's your choice whether or not to believe its veracity)
10. Embossed, signed paper Certification of Live Birth - Not released (not sure why you care, especially since you'd probably vote for Schwarzenegger, but this also is available to the public)
11. Harvard Law Review articles published - None (untrue, they're available online and through snail-mail, if you write the college)
12. University of Chicago scholarly articles – None (untrue, they're available online and through snail-mail, if you write the college -- I read one that was published online during the primaries)
13. Record of baptism - Not released or “not available” (untrue, although -- again -- not sure how this validates/invalidates a presidential bid)
14. Illinois State Senate records -”Not available” (waaaay untrue, they're available online)

Unemployed and hurting Ken the engineer,

You sure don't sound like paying that close of attention. Every major newspaper has looked deep into the McCain accusations about Ayers, for example. The McCain camp just doesn't like the answer after all the research, and it sounds like you don't either. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean the question wasn't asked.

I agree that Hillary is conspicuously quiet. But Hillary bamboozled? Never!

People are stress by the economy and are scared about what a Congress and Presidency run by the Democrat party are going to do. The stress and fear is getting to be to much for some people to keep in.

McCain and Palin have decided to stoke this rage, to foment it, to encourage paranoid notions that somehow Obama is a "secret" terrorist or Islamist or foreigner.
-by Andrew Sullivan

Amazing that Mr. Sullivan can write such inflammatory words without a shred of factual support...even more amazing is the fervent supporters of Obama that accept Sullivan's accusations and become enraged. Where is the common sense? You people are being played for the fools you are by people like Sullivan.

I'm a Republican who can't bring himself to vote for McCain, but I still feel the need to ask one question: what exactly did McCain do to "stoke this rage"? This blog post has a quote about one McCain supporter's anger -- which McCain is apparently trying to defuse -- and then an unsupported accusation by Sullivan. Slap the two together, add in a nice smear for a headline, and link the post from the front of the Chicago Tribune. Looks like there's at least one entity consciously fomenting anger, and it's neither McCain nor Obama.

Seriously, none of you belive that racism is alive and well in the U.S.??? The KKK still has demonstrations all over the place. You don't think that Obama's skin color and presumptive election as Commander-in-Chief puts him in much greater danger than if McCain or HIliary would have won? You're kidding yourselves.

Keep pretending all is well while tucked safely behind your locked doors at night.

Will the real John McCain stand up. The one who talks about honor, would stand up an publicly state that Obama is not a terrorist or muslim. He would focus on the issues, an accept the results based on his plans. The one we see is only concerned about winning, an has lost all honor.

TO "Dave". So hacking would be evidence of violent intent?
Next time, pick something logical. Something like, "Kill him!" being yelled at Palin rallies, as it has been.

Sorry Ken, I'm not buying your story. I say, you vote for McSame and four more years. I thought I knew McCain too, and he's be around a long time. Never figured the swift-boated would become the swift-boater. I'll take the "mysterious one", yes, ('that one") over the crazy, immoral one with nine houses.

People need to cut the crap. For every left-wing media outlet, there is a right-wing one to contradict it. And then there are media forms that do such a good job, no one can agree on which side they sit. Stop blaming the media. If you don't like it, don't read it.

Limbaugh would constantly attempt to incite the masses when Clinton was in the White House.

Hannity constantly refers to Obama as "a radical."

These people are doing McCain's bidding.
AND ... they are part of your "liberally biased media."

Jorge,

I think the explanation of the Ayers-Obama relationship I heard on last night's SNL Thursday night special was the true one, but Obama needs to lay it out so he can move on. The questions have been asked, but not adequately answered by the man with the anwers: Obama.

Suppose the roles were reversed. Imagine Obama and Biden at a rally, calling McCain a terrorist and attacking him. Imagine the crowd screaming "Kill him!" Then let's take this a step further. Let's say the crowd was predominently black, and screaming racial epithets at white media members. Every McCain supporter would be saying it was racial, that Obama was inciting a race war.
What McCain and Palin are doing is setting this country back 50 years. I am ashamed of the tolerance the McCain camp is showing for this obsene behavior.

Greg wrote: Obama's voting record, list of freinds, and resume do more harm than anything the McCain campaign could do.
This can only be true in the heads of those who have not read original source descriptions of that record, list and resume. Those who accept Faux News and the mccain campaigns paraphrasing of it should be alarmed.

people who are afraid of "socialists" are complete and utter idiots.

Unless you think that the military, public schools, police and fire service be abolished, its quite silly to pick and choose the programs you deem "socialist" or not.

Disclose, Disclose, Disclose,

You've gotta be kidding--looking for your answers on SNL? You deserve your clueless quest for disclosure.

Try the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune. Try the National Enquirer, for crying out loud. There's nothing left to disclose. McCain has scratched this one raw and come up empty.

The crazies that McCain/Palin are scaring up have made me change my mind DRASTICALLY about John McCain's ability to lead and unify this nation. I find his pandering to the basest fears of so many truely ignorant people sickeing and will no longer support him for any office at any time.

How about writing something with the title "Is Obama endangering America"??
Stock markets all over the world are tanking, in the fear that this guy, who doesn't have enough exectutive or managerial experience to run a 7-11, might get the reins on the most important country in the world.
G-d help us all if Obama wins.
