The Swamp

by Mark Silva

"Americans are catching on,'' the narrator of John McCain's TV ad warns.

In a campaign that is quickly devolving into those two camps of America that Democrat John Edwards warned about, the haves and the have-nots, Barack Obama's plan to cut taxes for the have-nots and increase them on the haves has become a focal point for John McCain's warning that Obama is touting more "welfare.''

And McCain is sharpening the focus of his attack on Obama through the lens of "Joe the Plumber,'' the fellow from Ohio made famous in the final televised debate (a fellow, it turns out, who also owes some back taxes of his own.)

"It's not that I want to punish your success,'' Obama tells Joe on the campaign trail, in a clip pictured in this McCain campaign ad. "I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody.''

Everbody? the ad asks.

"Seniors, hard working families... to give welfare to those who pay none.''.

The buzz-words of "socialism'' and "welfare'' have been injected into the presidential campaign in its final weeks, a time in which the federal government is purchasing shares in failing banks and injecting billions of dollars of capital into the financial markets, at the urging of the Bush administraiton, and the Federal Reserve chairman is suggesting another "booster shot'' of economic stimulus checks for Americans.

Joe the Plumber got a check in the first round of economic stimulus this year, we expect. He'll probably welcome another. But it's unlikely he'll call it welfare..

One person's welfare is another person's fair share.

Typical inane media logic. Simple test for welfare - If the rebate exceeds taxes paid by an individual, then it is welfare. Obama's plan does that by given "rebates" to people who pay no taxes under the current system. BTW - Joe the plumber's rebate was unlikely to exceed his taxes paid.

Do watch the youtube video of Al the shoe salesman. It's Al Bundy from "Married With Children" doing a calculation re Obama/McCain tax positions. Very funny.

I see now the Bush-McCain Republicans are trying to assault America with their lies and distortions !! First of all, let's get it straight, his name isn't " Joe " and he isn't a plumber. He's a tax deadbeat and he thought he could intimidate Senator Obama, who looked " Joe " in the eye and gave him an answer that he, either wouldn't accept, or didn't understand !! In either case, Senator McCain can't leave the gimmicks or the stunts alone. His, for want of a better word, campaign has been one disaster after another, something akin President Bush's two terms in Office !! He still can't get it right. Now, he's using " poor Joe ", as a sledgehammer, trying to beat we, the electorate, into submission. It will not work, Senator McCain, your message is outdated and your character is not what it should be, to be our President !! Go back to Arizona and do your community proud, represent them in our Senate with the honor, that you once had !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

How can Joe the Plumber get the check from the first round of economic stimulus when he actually owed back taxes?

You might want to ask Joe first before deciding what he'll think.

Is that a Marx or Stalin quote?

Why are the Republicans so set against hardworking Americans? If you cut the Earned Income Tax Credit that is precisely who you are hurting. People who are working hard, but are not getting paid enough by their employers to get by and to support their families. These aren't lazy people. A single parent working full time at a minimum wage job makes only 85% of the Federal Poverty line. They work just as hard as you, probably harder. Yet the Republicans look at them with such complete disdain and are actively working to make sure their lives are even harder. These Republicans want hard working American, full time workers, to keep working hard and have even less to show for it, at the same time they cry rivers of tears for the plight of the rich.

McCain is all Sound and Fury (signifying nothing)

Ask McCain, he seems to be the expert on applied Marxism. Nationalizing mortgages and banks is a great start on the road to true socialism. Once McCain puts power over banking in government hands, I'm sure other industies will follow.

Okay-I probably agree with you... but how does that rationalize your "One person's welfare is another person's fair share." philosophy?

If you have a problem with McCains approval of the banking collectivism- then how can you possible agree with your previous quote??

You have it backward friend. Support for the original quote and support for banking nationalization are consistant. How do you support a Candidate who plans on massive socialization of banking, yet attacks any plan that helps the common worker as socialism?

Actually, I think that both of you are unwittingly (or unwillingly) in agreement. Handing out taxpayers' money to banks and partially nationalizing them is every bit as socialist as handing out any other freebee at taxpayers' expense. As you say, the move to partially nationalize the banks sets a precedent for nationalization of businesses as a means of giving the federal government more levers of control over the economy. That is not acceptable from the point of view of free-market, anti-socialists because it sets the stage for a socialist-like command economy.
*
Thus, John McCain really has no place decrying "socialism" after he voted for the largest, most expensive boondoggle in American History: The bailout. Then again, Obama and Biden have no basis to deny their socialist leanings after having voted in favor of that monstrosity as well. That's especially true after having argued for even more expensive social welfare programs in the teeth of looming deficits on a massive scale. After all, socialists are as socialists do.

I've resolve this conflict in my own mind without ignoring all the glaring hypocrisy. I'm not voting for Obama or McCain. This country and its economy is already a train off its tracks, and none of these clowns have a clue as to what needs to be done. I have not seen, in my entire life, two more unqualified candidates running for President at the head of the two main tickets. We have no adult leadership in Washington and next months election isn't going to give us any regardless of whom we elect.

To start with...Obama does not plan to "hand out" any "freebies" to anyone. The change he's asking in the tax system is in order to create programs and jobs that will help those that have lost jobs, and need affordable housing and healthcare...that are having a real struggle being able to even feed their families. Since when are those problems even an issue to those making over a quarter of a million dollars?? Dang...the greed of the American people, and their need to hang onto every dollar is totally disgusting to me. If there was no middle class, and those higher income people actually had to get out there and do the "menial low-paid" jobs that need to be done by someone in order to keep the nation going, they would feel differently about this issue. As they say...walk a mile in our shoes....THEN you put us down if you can.

The delicious irony about JTP is that he, and his parents, have been on welfare.

I guess now that he no longer needs to have any wealth spread his way, he figures no one else does either.

My god, I almost feel bad about making fun of Palin and Joe the welfare recip -- I mean, the Plumber, but they were disgustingly negative, weren't they, during the sad downward spiral of McCain's campaign. To everyone who thinks that Palin is intelligent and Joe the Plumber is a fine judge of reality, I say, there's a party for you. Go join it!
