The election test: John McCain won't be the one who is tested by adversaries -- he'll 'test them' - he said today at a campaign rally at the New Mexico State Fair Grounds in Albuquerque today. (Photo by Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images)
by Mark Silva
"I'm gonna test them,'' Republican John McCain said at a campaign rally in New Mexico this morning. "They're not gonna test me.''
The comment followed McCain's warning that Democratic rival Barack Obama's camaign has "guaranteed'' people that the nation will face a test from enemies within months of Obama's election as president -- something that running mate Joe Biden asserted last weekend, Biden following that line with a remark that Obama has a "spine of steel'' for that test.
The McCain campaign has taken Biden's words, and put them in an ominous campaign TV ad warning that the younger, relatively inexperienced candidate for president will be tested by the nation's adversaries if he is elected. It doesn't have to happen, the McCain ad says.
"The next president was already tested by this economic crisis,'' Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said today, in repsonse to McCain's statement. "And the result is that Barack Obama showed steady leadership and John McCain failed miserably by erratically lurching from posistion to position as he gamed out his politics instead of demostrating the kind of leadership America requires right now.''
Just as Biden's words have provided fodder for the McCain campaign in a week of sound-bite wars, McCain's own words today are provocative in their own right.
This is the candidate who once started joking, during the party primaries, with a song to the tune of Barbara Ann -- "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.''
The Republican Party is portraying Obama as "untested'' -- as it calls him in a new ad airing today. McCain is portraying himself as the "tested'' one.
But today, McCain raised a new question that could escalate that sound-bite campaign war: Who is he "gonna test'' if elected president? And how?
"I have been tested,'' McCain said, with a certain gritted-teeth look at the state fairgrounds in New Mexico. "I'm gonna test them. They're not gonna test me.''

Well said.....pure John McCain. This is EXACTLY the kind of "cowboy" statement/challenge that prevented me as well as my family my family from voting for McCain. So sad.
Let's give peace a chance.....

John McCain is a test. What on earth is he talking about. His campaign is total chaos. His approach to everything is ill-considered (unconsidered really) and changes by the moment. Do we really need someone who has truly shown that he has no ability to lead and who makes terrible decisions (spelled Palin) in the White House? He has made his campaign about lies, hatred, bigotry and divisiveness. Enough with this jerk already!!!
Posted by: Jim Dandy | October 25, 2008 2:09 PM
This is why McCain is such a risky and dangerous choice for Americans to make. We need to take him at his word. No more wars, enough is enough, we have too many problems to worry about which country McCain plan on testing. We need to focus on getting the country back on its feet again not engage in warfare.
Posted by: Flo | October 25, 2008 2:25 PM
Just what we need when we're overextended already. More provocation!!
We need Obama's steady hand at the helm, not empty John McWayne talk.
Posted by: Larry Vogel | October 25, 2008 2:37 PM
Let's see, Obama gets criticized for saying with some preparation he'll TALK to anybody. McCain says instead with some prepartion he'll FIGHT with anybody. Hmmm!
Posted by: WaltCulver | October 25, 2008 2:38 PM
What we need is a president who has been tested beyond any doubt. As McCain refused to leave his fellow POW's behind in Viet Nam, he will never leave the American people behind, he will stand up for us and fight for us, all Obama will do is give a speech.
Posted by: Sharon | October 25, 2008 2:46 PM
There are not too many guarantees in life, but you can count on this one. If Barack Obama was the president, you can count on Obama to stand up tall to any test. But here is the other half of this equation: If McCain is the next president you can count on him to take us into another war, along with Iraq and Afghanistan. His test will end up getting into another war. If you are a young man get ready to be drafted, and if you have kids of draft age, get them ready for the draft. We will have a president ready to go to war, and all of the population will suffer even more than now. With this scenario who will you vote for ? John McCain still lives in the Hanoi Hilton in the prison of his mind. As president he will take revenge that goes back 40 yrs, are you willing to go through that ?

I know it is hard to believe, but I have been an undecided voter. I was very involved in Hillary's campaign.
Biden's remarks really brought home all my fears about Obama's lack of experience. His statements are all over the place and I can not vote for him.
It will be hard to vote for a GOP president, but I am voting against Obama. Also the crazy left crowd of MoveOn, etc. really have turned me off.
My parents are in Western Pa and also will be voting for McCain -- they are not racists, but worried about national security!

Biden's comments last week were downright scary. He was intimating that HE knows something WE don't.
(He's the smartest guy in the room, don't you know).
He specifically said that if OBAMA was elected, HE SPECIFICALLY -meant Barack. Not just any new president.
So what's it gonna be, Joe?
A terror attack on American soil?
Iran nuking Israel?
Joe also went on to ask for "support" when they make a decision that might not be supported or understood to be correct judgment.
Another war?
What do you know, Joe?

Oh, isn't that lovely. McCain is going to test "them." John, do us all a favor. Once you lose the election, go get yourself some Viagra and enjoy a well deserved night indoor with the missus. Or whoever. You'll feel much better in the morning.

I don't think as a country we are in a position to provoke an international crisis. The economy is faltering and the military is stretched thin. I think going out of our way to create an incident is poor judgment, Also, for those that are concerned about people "testing" Obama, think about who would come out of woodworks with Pres. Palin.
Posted by: Karl | October 25, 2008 4:45 PM
How has John McCain been tested as a commander-in-chief? His example was sitting in a plane on the deck of the Enterprise prepared to attack Cuba. He often refers to his ordeal as a POW. Neither was an executive position. His presidential campaign has received bipartisan criticism. At a time of crisis we do not need an impetuous 20th century man leading us against anyone, but a 21st century leader uniting us and regaining our respect in the world community..

Julia,
Yes, but the crazy right wing crowd McPalin has been has been sucking up to does not frighten you?
You supported Hills, but you can't pull the Obama switch?
Do you know what will happen to the Supreme Court once you vote in McCain?
Snap out of it.

Julia, could you please explain what you meant by Obama's statements being "all over the place"?
From what I've seen, be it at the debates or at rallies, Obama's message has always sounded consistent to me. He picks an area that needs to be reformed and then gives specific point-by-point details about how he's going to reform it. On the other hand, I am consistently hearing McCain say is he knows how to do this or that, and he's been tested many times but there are no specifics to back up his statements.
I am genuinely interested to know why you feel that Obama's statements are all over the place. Thanks.

Posting times are way too fast here at the Swamp! Mine get put up sometimes as quickly as 4 hours or more! I can't take that kind of speed!
Please slow it down to 8 or even 12 hours so the thread of the debate is even more stale, and with any luck at all, completely off the front page.

You should not worry about Obama not protecting you, you need to worry about McCain taking the USA to another war. You see if he start a war with another Nation and it spill over here in the USA the first than they will do is take him and his family to an under ground shelter and you are left on your own. He is not worried about you. He will test them and run fast. Is this what you want? I voted for Obama.

To bill "Hussein"
My positive comment about McCain was not published until I commented about not getting my message posted.
Strange how that happens.

I got linked to this article from a conservative blogger, so I was surprised to see some of the comments. But let me point at a couple of things.
to jim dandy...your post..."He has made his campaign about lies, hatred, bigotry and divisiveness. " You need to honestly check yourself.
1. Name one. Lies is hard to prove, and I can't say Obama lied on any of these, but I'll put a few out where he obfsucated.
a. Just a guy in my neighborhood.
b. Never knew his pastor was an America hating racist.
c. I'll give tax cuts to people who don't pay taxes.
d. My campaign never gave acorn a dime (sorry, that was was Biden, but come on)
e. I only voted to kill kids, b/c there was already a law protecting it. Balled faced lie.
f. I support the second ammendment. Except when it comes to owning guns.
I could go on and on, and link to everything, but you have to admit you already know these, and you just don't care.
There used to be a saying in politics that the only way to lose was to get caught in bed with a live boy, or a dead girl. He's been caught in bed with a live terrorist (Ayers/Dorn), live anti-Semites (Farrakhan and Wright), a genocidal maniac (Odinga), and a convicted felon (Rezko). Seriously, if you like his policies, fine, but this guy does not pass the smell test.
Who has actually mentioned race in this campaign? Never McCain. There are always idiots on both sides, and some have them have brought up race, but McCain has never. So give that up!
Wow, didn't mean to write that much, but it got out of hand. Refute any one, and I'll respond.
Have a good night,
Pat

To Lara..re: Julia, could you please explain what you meant by Obama's statements being "all over the place"?
I don't know Julia, this is my first time on this site. I don't know about all over the place, but how about directly opposite?
Unequivocally states that he will meet with leaders of Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela without preconditions, and now claims that's not what he really meant.
How about when talking to a Jewish group, he advocated an undevided Jeruselem, and the next day, claimed that not what he really meant.
How about how he wants to lower the tax burden on us, but told Charlie Gibson, that while he realized increasing capital gains taxes decreases revenue, it's more fair. But that's not what he really meant, except he repeated it again with his spread the wealth gaff.
How about how every vote that he didn't vote present for, that had anything to do with gun control, he voted for more gun control, but that's not the way he really wanted to vote. I approve the second ammendment when I'm running for president, all my votes are not what I really meant.
And how about the most disgusting, where he claims while he was in the Illinois senate, the only reason he voted against the infant born alive protection act, is because there was already law protecting that. That one used to be on his fight the smears site, and he had to take it down b/c it was such a balled face lie. But that's not what he really meant.
Are those enough, but my fingers are getting tired?
Julia, could you please explain what you meant by Obama's statements being "all over the place"?Pat

Mcacin/Palin supporters, after you go to the polls to vote for them, when you get home, look at your teenage children and kiss them good bye. Tell them that you just voted for a man who can't wait to spill their blood in a foreign coountry. Tell them that you just voted for a man who will ensure another war, and a draft to support it. Tell them that you just voted for them to die in Iran, or Venezuala or Georgia or some other place just so that John McCain can look tough. Tell your beloved children you just signed their death warrant.

"gonna" is not a word. If McCain is to be our President, he needs to get a lecture on proper English. I hated watching Bush's speechs for the same reason.
Posted by: John Spencer | October 26, 2008 5:48 PM
You're right -- "gonna" is not a word. While you're at it, tell George W. and Sarah P. that there's no such word as "nuke-you-lar", and when McCain makes fun of political pundits for being unable to predict the election, he needs to quit saying "PUNDINT". Why do you think so many people are supporting Obama? One reason -- he's smart enough to speak correct English!
