After the votes are cast Nov. 4, many will be asking how effective the highest-temperature attack tactics of the two presidential contenders were in the campaign.

And when the votes are cast, enthusiasm for the candidates may have a lot to do with turnout for each.

On both fronts, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll today holds findings worth noting:

 56 percent of all likely voters surveyed say Republican John McCain and the GOP have attacked Democratic nominee Barack Obama unfairly.

 40 percent say Obama and his party have attacked McCain unfairly.

 Among the Democrats surveyed, 51 percent said they are extremely enthusiastic about voting for president this year, 25 percent very enthusiastic.

 Among the Republicans, 28 percent are extremely enthusiastic, 26 percent very.

 11 percent of the Democrats are not too enthusiastic or not at all enthusiastic about voting, while 18 percent of the Republicans are not too or not at all enthusiastic.

The survey was run Friday through Sunday, and the results for the sample of 746 likely voters in the poll have a plus or minus 3.5 percentage point possible margin of error.

Normally I would think how enthusiastic someone is about their candidate would only play a minor role in the outcome, but this year I think it may have a much bigger impact. If you are going to have to stand in a line for 2 hours, it helps to care about who you are voting for.

The media has gone out of their way to portray John McCain in a negative fashion because he stands in the way of Obama becoming President.

If the media had done their job and investigated and reported Obama's past relationships and his future plans and policies the public might of had a different slant on the man.

The media has failed the American public.

The media failed, especially The Chicago Tribune here in Chicago, just hope they keep sinking unless they have the guts to wake up-

Telling us the percentage of people who think one candidate has unfairly attacked the other is worthless until we are also told why those people thought an attack was "unfair." With all the hero worship going on, some people might well view any negative statement as "unfair" even if it is true. I mean, I hope no one here is laboring under the false impression that this year's election campaign has been an exercise in objectivity.

Palin/McCain don't understand the yin-yang of their own slime attacks. They are in the same mode as Newt G. when he was attacking Hillary in the 90's; Every time he opened his mouth the Clintons became more popular.

Now, 'they' say that Obama has gone negative also. But only in response to McCain's turd balls, and America has figured it out.

It's like the Republics expected Obama to play limp like Gore and Kerry.

The shock voters are feeling over McCain's attacks are a bit more complex. Most Americans, myself included, thought he was a better man than this.

Here comes the Obama landslide, thank God, and McCain's help.

Hopefully a +60 in the Senate, too.

So much needs fixed. We don't even know the half of it.

You have gone right to the heart of the matter, as you usually do. Obama is not "The One." His campaign has simply taken advantage of a long-term fantasy -based in Judeo-Christian heritage - that such an idealized human being would emerge. As much as we idealize our collective wisdom, we are capable of collective ignorance as well. The election of George W. Bush over Al Gore was the result of emotional manipulation. If Obama is elected, it will be for the same reason. This is very discouraging.

McCain and his socialist attacks on Obama are gutter politics. McCain just voted for the biggest public buyout of the biggest commercial finance companies in the country. He was a party to the big tax cuts to the wealthy, when the republicans robbed the U.S. Treasury with their big tax cuts for the wealthy. That kind of welfare is ok??? ANY TAX CUT IS A REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH!! WE WOULD JUST BE GETTING OUR MONEY BACK!! whiteagle38

Yeah, I wish we could have heard more about John McCain's lousy academic record, flight record, history of flip-flopping, philandering and anger management issues. I wish we would have delved into Cindy McCain's history of elitism, drug abuse and stealing drugs from her own medical relief organization. I wish we could have heard more about the Keating Five. I wish we could have heard more about the McCain's 14 homes and condos. I wish we could have seen more tax records. I wish we could have heard more about Reverend Hagee. I wish we could have truly investigated the lying smear campaign from the McCain camp. I wish the crazy "liberal media" were actually allowed to ask the confused PTA hockey mom, well, anything important. I wish we could have the percentages reported after the dumbed down base had relevant information. I hope nobody is laboring under the false impression that they have been given fair and balanced information. Objectivity is a two way street. And what about the birthday card sent to Joey Bananas? Obviously not important to the "liberal media".

Mark you know CNN is the DNC house organ. The Obama drivebys are using hype and bull to tarnish McCain.
Its like their feverish attack on Joe the plumber. One driveby said he isn't Joe he is Sam when his name is Samuel Joseph he can use any name he wants to go by.
Then they say he is not a licensed plumber. He is studying for the license and the firm is licensed so it doesn't matter. The union plumbers don't like him. Imagine that why would unions like non-union people? But it is a free country its Joe's business not the drivebys.
What Joe did the drivebys can't forget is make Obama the socialist we all knew he was. Jerry White, Springfield, IL I wish you guys would go back on your Obama endorsement and become the World's Greatest Newspaper you once were!

I have been eligble to vote in 3 elections so far and have not voted. McCain has given me very good reason to finally vote. Not for him of course, I don't vote for attack ads. McCain hasn't given a single reason to vote for him, only reasons to not vote for Obama. It's like McCain is telling us to just not vote.

I am laughing SO hard at this latest bit of total ignorance! Thank you, Jerry, for this comic relief!

INTERESTING how Samuel Joseph gets to choose his name (and thank you SO much for granting him that right!) when Barack HUSSEIN Obama gets TOLD what name HE's gonna use, and you guys act like it's some kind of act of fraud for him to go by his own first name instead. Shouldn't Joe be told what name he's going to use based on what some partisan mamone finds the most useful to their ideology?

Joe the Plumber whose name is actually Samuel Joseph and who isn't actually a licensed plumber can go by Joe or Sam or Jim or Edith or Beowulf, and he can be a plumber or carpenter or business-owner or not, licensed or unlicensed -- I don't care a whit one way or another. I wish him well in whatever he does. HOWEVER -- it's not any kind of injustice to Mr. Joe for the press, biased or otherwise, to report facts. I mean, YOU'VE been upset when media won't report stuff that ISN'T fact about Obama just so long as it isn't flattering, so why should reporting what IS true be so upsetting to you? And -- excuse me? -- WHO was it that made "Joe the Plumber" a by-word in the first place? Give you a couple hints: First, it was one of the people running as a major party's candidate for President, and second, it WASN'T Obama. So, if you're upset that Joe isn't enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, you have no one but McCain to blame for that.

And, if you're against news organizations being too invested in a party, why is it you're willing to accept FOX News as an authentic news source?
