The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The McCain campaign, hoping to foment doubts about Barack Obama in the Jewish community, has complained that a newspaper has "suppressed'' a videotape of Obama attending a dinner with Rashid Khalidi, an Arab studies scholar and advocate of Palestinian rights, back in 2003.

But "the latest guilt-by-association target that the McCain campaign is using to hit Barack Obama could carry some collateral damage for its own candidate,'' the Huffington Post notes.
.
During the 1990s, while McCain served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), the group distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi.

A 1998 tax filing for the McCain-led group shows a $448,873 grant to Khalidi's Center for Palestine Research and Studies for work in the West Bank, the Post notes. The relationship extends back as far as 1993, when McCain joined IRI as chairman.. Foreign Affairs noted in September of that year that IRI had helped fund several extensive studies in Palestine run by Khalidi's group, including over 30 public opinion polls and a study of "sociopolitical attitudes."

"Of course,'' the Post writes, "there's seemingly nothing objectionable with McCain's organization helping a Palestinian group conduct research in the West Bank or Gaza. But it does suggest that McCain could have some of his own explaining to do as he tries to make hay out of Khalidi's ties to Obama.''

Khalidi helped found the Center for Palestine Research and Studies, self-described as "an independent academic research and policy analysis institution" created to meet "the need for active Palestinian scholarship on issues related to Palestine,'' ABC News notes. He served on the board of trustees through 1999, and McCain's IRI continued to give money to the CPRS after Khalidi left the group as well.

The Swamp this morning noted the flap over the Obama-Khalidi videotape which the McCain campaign wants the Los Angeles Times to relaase. The paper says it got the tape in confidence, and reported on its contents in April.

In reporting on Obama's presence at the dinner for Khalidi,'' the Times reported, "the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground.''

Typical of the Republican=Hypocrite agenda. McCain has lost all respect he ever had with the American People with his dirty, lying, manipulative sleazy campaign!

I doubt that any media outlet could obtain a videotape of John McCain praising any Palestinian.
But if they could they would play it, even if they had promised the source confidentiality.
Why?
Because the media wants Obama to win and will go overboard to ensure this happens!

Lets' see...How would the republicans handle this information? We have not heard enough about McBushs ties to the terrorists. The conservative contolled media has not vetted this candidate properly. All these associations with terrorists need to come to light for the American people. What do we know about this candidate?

So you're saying that McCain would never praise ANY Palestinian? Sounds like you think he's a real bigot. Do you really want a President who doesn't think there is a single member of any particular ethnic group who is praiseworthy?

Ladies and Gentlemen John Sydney McCain has reached a new low. Mr. McCain is a sitting Senator running for President of the USA. He is attempted to force/shame the LA Times into releasing media content. This is an attack on the First Amendment. A private citizen may try to force/shame a news organization but a representative of the Government? No way, no how, no McCain. That is a direct violation of the First Amendment and it is the First Amendment for a reason. This reeks of Fascist Totalitarianism.

If McCain feels he's the better man for the job, he should start acting like it instead of someone who graduated fifth from the bottom of his class. People want substance, not sleaze. Time and again, his dirty campaigning has backfired, but he's too dim to understand that. Guess nothing more can be expected from someone who graduated 894th out of 899 from Annapolis.

A way for the money-losing Tribune to cut costs:

Outsource The Swamp to the Democratic Party National Committee.

Since all the Swamp columnists do is rejurgitate DNC talking points (see above article for a prime example), why not replace them with an intern who'll repeat whatever the DNC says?

The Swamp content wouldn't be changed--it would be 100% Democrat either way. And the Tribune would only have to pay one intern's salary.

Bruce....Do you have any "cost cutting" ideas for the rest of America since your party drove our economy off the cliff?

Mussolini to Newspaper: "Release the pictures of my political enemy!"

Stalin to Newspaper: "Release the pictures of my political enemy!"

Castro to Newspaper: "Release the pictures of my political enemy!"
;
McCain to LATimes: "Release the video of my political enemy!"

That's some great company McCain likes to fashion his policies to resemble.

I agree completely. Honestly if McCain's ties were made known then why not Obama's? What does he have to hide? I think that as voters we should know both sides to really be objective. Making one or the other look like a bad guy is ridiculous and childish on both parties. We should be able to find out what we are getting into before we vote for either of them.

The Obama campaign and their supporters can't tell the truth, much less the whole truth.

The International Republican Institute isn't a "McCain organization". Under Reagan, Congress authorized the National Endowment for Democracy , which essentially disburses funds, more accurately our tax dollars, through four sub groups, one Republican, one Dem, one Labor, and one private enterprise. And yes, as a Republican legislator McCain has been involved with the IRI, and whether McCain made it or not, I might support the decision to "fund" Khalid's group. They were hired to do polling in the West Bank. The fact that the Obama campaign doesn't understand that, when polling in a nest of terrorists, you either deal with terrorist supporters or don't do the polling. Same goes for distributing aid. Lots of bad guys cash our checks. That's the real world, if you want Goldilocks you need Obamaland. In his double super secret plan to take out bin Ladin, who does the Senator think he'll be dealing with, Nancy Pelosi?

Toasting the spokesman for a terrorist and wishing him well, perhaps validating his opinion that Israel shouldn't exist, is quite another thing.

Retirement plans are swirling down the toilet and the costs of groceries and utilities have skyrocketed to ridiculous amounts. The last thing of concern to me is an old story that was written in April and one that the McCain camp suddenly thinks is now an issue. If it was so important, McCain should've brought it up before the end of the election.

A couple of items:

-- Sen. McCain seems to have a more intimate relationship with Rashid Khalidi than Sen. Obama through McCain's International Republican Institute. Money passed hands. Only words passed between Obama and Khalidi. And perhaps a plate of dinner rolls.

-- Gov. Palin was a journalism major at one or more of the many colleges she attended over the years. She even worked as a journalist. I guess she forgot that if a journalist burns a confidential source, and the word gets around, that's the end of future confidential sources ever coming forward. And since the potentially damaging Obama-Khalidi information contained in the tape was reported months ago, claims of an L.A. Times coverup are specious. I guess the governor was busy practicing her beauty queen runway walk when she should have been in a class discussion of the issue.

Oh, well. Tuesday awaits.
