John McCain is in a tough spot.
Down in the polls within weeks of Election Day, advisers are pushing him to ratchet up the attacks on Democrat Barack Obama. Some in his town hall audience in Wisconsin yesterday were actually yelling out loud for McCain to hit harder.
And he has, both on the campaign trail, and on TV. McCain personally has joined the campaign trail attack that running mate Sarah Palin started, calling for Obama to fess up about what he knew and when about William Ayers, that Chicago education professor and onetime Sixties radical with whom Obama has engaged in civic work.
Who is Barack Obama, McCain is asking with a menacing tone. Obama is, as McCain's TV ads flatly warn, "dangerous.''
But, now, who is John McCain?
That's what William Milliken, former Republican governor of Michigan and a supporter of McCain in the party primaries this year, is asking about a candidate who, in Milliken's view, appears to have lost his way in this fight for the White House.
"He is not the McCain I endorsed," Milliken, reached at his Traverse City home on Thursday, told the Grand Rapids Press for today's editions. "He keeps saying, 'Who is Barack Obama?' I would ask the question, 'Who is John McCain?' because his campaign has become rather disappointing to me.
"I'm disappointed in the tenor and the personal attacks on the part of the McCain campaign, when he ought to be talking about the issues."
McCain already has pulled back his campaign in Michigan.
For more on Milliken losing faith in McCain, see the Press story here.

The real tragedy is what will remain in the rubble after this campaign has ended, no matter who wins. Mr. McCain will have created so many divisions and fanned the flames of suspicion in so many parts of this country that putting Humpty together again will be difficult if not impossible. What kind of dreams do these people have at night? What will they do with the presidency if they get it?

Julian, it'll be worse if Obama were to be elected. He has not exactly brought anyone together. In all honesty the dem's should be running away with the polls, but Barry can't win enough of the country to put it away.

If McBush was thinking "country first", he surely would be coming up with ideas to help us instead of trying to divide us.

Julian, why would it be worse if Obama is elected? He's currently ahead in the polls. You may be in denial, but I believe Obama has brought many people together. Let's be honest here--perhaps the only ones who think Obama would not be good for the country (including you) tend to look at the color of his skin.

Those who live by the smear, die by the smear !! Senator McCain has nobody to blame but his Bush-McCain Republicans, and their lackeys !! Former Senator Gramm, the " Whiner ", front and center, along with Carl Rove, just to name a few of Senator McCain's stink tank !! How can you miss the bull's eye, with such sharp-shooters, as them !!? All they know how to do, is, take the money and behave as undemocratically or unchristianly, as they can !! That is sure a whining combination !! My suggestion to Senator McCain and Governor Palin, go back to your former responsibilities and try to be better servants to your constituents, make their lives a little easier. In the case of Governor Palin, allow the wheels of the state government to move without your interference, from imposing your narrow view of scientific thought, creationism, to the gestapo-type tactics of censorship in our libraries. As for your personal dislike of a woman's right to privacy, I agreed with you, when you said, of your daughter's condition, she is entitled to her right to privacy. All women have a right to that privacy !! Please, try to remember that in the future. As for Senator McCain, Arizona is still in need of a Senator, one who is not blinded by ambition, but one who is touch with all of the citizens of Arizona. It doesn't mean, that you have to give up your 12 homes and private jet, it just means, you have to get out of them, long enough, to get to know them, again !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

M Bingamon: "it'll be worse if Obama were to be elected." Right. Four more years. BTW, how's your 401K doing?

Who is John Mccain? John McCain is a disgrace to this great nation. John McCain is a man who has sacrificed every shred of his honor because of his ambitions. John McCain is a man who has utterly betrayed the values of "Duty, Honor, Country".

McCain cut and ran from Michigan. 'Nuff said.

Michiganders should be the last ones to want to vote for Obama. They've been taxed to death by their Democrat
politicians; they've lost jobs to race-based job practices; they've watched the American auto industry disappear from under them because of Democrat tax and give-away programs; and they've seen crime go out of sight in Democrat-run cities like Detroit. Want more? Vote O.

You're kidding, Ken? Who in their right minds votes for Chicago politicians other than people from Chicago. Barry is up to his eye balls in the corruption that sticks to everyone of the upstate politicians. Honestly we'd love to give the whole of Cook county to Wisconsin and they can pay for your city instead of downstate Illinois. By the way, it was the Dems that pushed the sub-prime loans.

Dear Janstress:
I thought it would be worth dropping you a public line to underscore what I have commented about here in the past. As long as there is a lack of education, information, civility and discourse is so low, there will always be comments like M. Bingamon's. M has asserted, and I think fairly, that he hasn't been brought together with anyone. Undoubtedly, there will be people like MB who have their own idea of how the world and their chosen candidates work. If they are not swayed by information and discussion, they are moved by drama. There is every reason to believe that, if MB can't move you with anything but sound bites, he or she would be perfectly happy jerking your chain. We may not like these folks, but they are our neighbors and we, along with Barack, will have to live with them.
I would be happier living in a world where we can solve problems together in one big, happy family, but it so happens that this has not been the state of the world since I've been here anyway. I hope that MB can help us all raise the level of discourse. It won't kill anyone. It's just discussion.

Apparently you haven't heard the term "credit default swap" nor the role that Phil Gramm played nor the $60 TRILLION mess.
Posted by: Kenneth Janowski | October 10, 2008 3:33 PM
Danberry: you're off base. Michigan has one of the lowest state tax rates! What are you talking about? I prefer roads with taxes to no roads with no taxes. Plowing them in the winter would be nice. And state troopers need salary. How can you say Michigan has such high taxes?
Ken Janowski: On subprime loans, I don't get you - Phil Gramm is not "the dems" nor is deregulation part of Obama's policy... I seem to recall most Republicans voting for the measure. And McCain has always been a fan of the Reaganesque deregulation you're trying to promote.
I'd recommend both of you stop your lumping together of all people with a "D" after their title (i.e. "(evil) liberal") and start looking at what votes were cast, what tax rates are, and what candidates stand for. You will always be a puppet of liberal and/or conservative spin doctors unless you learn how to think *and* research.
