Putting Joe's Comment Into Context

Sarah Palin isn't the only running mate causing problems for the top of the ticket.

John McCain's relentless attacks on Joe Biden's remark about President-elect Barack Obama and a potential international crisis have forced the Democrats to air a new response ad aimed at blunting the criticism. But the new TV ad makes it clear that the Republican assault on Biden's ill-chosen words is drawing blood.

In effort to contain the damage, the Obama spot supplies some language missing from McCain's attempt to draw a bead on Biden's poorly phrased comments, delivered at a fund-raising event in Seattle eight days ago.

"Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama. The world is looking. We're going to have an international crisis ... to test the mettle of this guy. I guarantee you it's gonna happen,'' Biden said
.
A McCain campaign ad, which seized on Biden's ambiguous comment, concluded: "It doesn't have to happen.''

"Vote McCain.''

Now, Obama has responded. His new ad attempts to put into context the words Biden spoke at the event that day. It includes Biden's claim that Obama would be able to deal with the crisis because he's "got steel in his spine."

In a sign of the target audience for the new spot---white males---the ad aired during Fox's telecast of the 5th game of the World Series.

The buttoned-down Democratic presidential nominee had already signaled his displeasure with Biden's comment.

"I think Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes," Obama said last week.

The story goes Obama was at the bottom of the bucket when he picked Biden, so expectations aren't that great-

"Biden's poorly phrased comments,..." - Otherwise know as the Truth. The scary thing about this is not that he made the quote about Obama's inexperience, but he makes this quote just days after the Obama and Mccain teams were briefed by the Bush administration about foriegn policy "hot spots". Can the gut keep a secret?

Mark my words, it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."

"I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate, and he's gonna need help. And the kind of help he's gonna need is, he's gonna need you - not financially to help him - we're gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it's not gonna be apparent initially, it's not gonna be apparent that we're right."

There's the quote - spin it anway you want - this was not about "stell in the spine", it was about Biden not being able to keep a secret and he knows Obama is a foriegn policy disaster waiting to happen.

I just hope Taiwan, Georgia, the Baltics, Poland, and Columbia can survive an Obama Presidency

This episode reminds me when Joe Biden said that Obama is not ready to be president and that Biden will be glad to run with or against McCain. Out of the two, Biden is a lot more truthful than Obama.

Why is it that you neanderthals are so attached to Biden's "unfinished" statement, but now making snide comments about it when the record is set straight by adding the conclusion of his statement?

Veteran Pentagon consultant Michael Bayer says that there will likely be a crisis in the first 270 days of the new presidency, and it will be a sensitive period, with the first wartime transfer of power in 4 decades. The military will be on high operational alert.

The key goal will be to fill civilian posts requiring Senate confirmation soon, so there will be a concerted effort to have the top 3 tiers of appointees ready for Senate confirmation in the first 30 days.

So get off your high horses!

This must be the last act of a desperate campaign, more character-assassinating by the Bush-McCain Republicans. They do not have anything constructive to offer America, just more falsehoods, innuendoes and quotes, distorted. If you are going to quote Senator Biden's quote, have the guts to quote it, in its entirety !! No, you can't do that !! Then it wouldn't serve your silly purpose of distortion and smearing Senator Obama's good name and substantial qualifications !!
Senator McCain, of the Keating Five, has a reputation for condoning any tactic to win this election, another page from the Rove-Bush playbook. I think America is tired of 8 years of the scorched earth policy of these Bush administrations and will find that if we elect the Obama-Biden ticket, it will make for better and brighter future for all America !! America doesn't want a Senator, Senator McCain, who is saddled with a history of disregarding our laws of the land and a running mate, Governor Palin, who is being investigated for abuse of power. These are not the types of Americans, America wants governing our country. We do not need creationism in our classrooms, censorship in our Libraries and certainly not, the denial of the right to privacy for every American woman, except for Governor Palin's daughter. That is not what America stands for, in spite of the last dismal 8 years !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I wish Biden would be more like Palin....say only what you're told to say. Then say it so poorly....no one knows what you really said.

Isn't it strange that McCain's buddy Joe Lieberman said the EXACT SAME THING, yet the GOP doesn't say that.

But it seems like Lieberman is getting ready for an Obama Presidency, since he has started saying nice things about Barack. He knows now that his future political career is in deep trouble.

Biden's comment was boneheaded, and those attempting to defend it look silly.

For those who say Biden's words were taken out of context, I'm not really following you. He was not speaking in general terms - he mentioned Obama specifically. Why he did that is anyone's guess. I think most intelligent democrats (oxymoron?) knew when Biden came on board there would be uncomfortable moments like this. Decent enough guy, but he has made a career out of putting his foot in his mouth.
