HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign is making plans for what it hopes will be an Election Night celebration outdoors in Chicago.
Aides say plans are still fluid and a specific venue has yet to be nailed down, but Millennium Park or Grant Park are distinct possibilities.
Millennium Park, a legacy of Obama ally Mayor Richard Daley, is close to the campaign's headquarters on Michigan Avenue, near many large downtown hotels and with lots of nearby parking.
Grant Park would offer much more space and allow many more people. It hosted a papal mass in 1979 featuring Pope John Paul II.
It could be cold on Nov. 4, but almost certainly no colder than frigid February 2007 day when Obama announced his presidential bid on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield.

Comments
Don't count your Millenia before they are hatched.
However, riding the train in from Hyde Park where you-know-who is from, I'm overhearing conversations about everyone taking Nov. 5 off.
Hmm. That sounds like a plan.

Sounds like a plan! I'll definitely be there! The thought of a President from Chicago is amazing!!!

I wonder if the taxpayers of Chicago will pick-up the tab for the set-up and tear-down for BO's party in the park?

Why not Soldier Field? It can accommodate more than 60,000 and would provide a much more secure environment than an open air event in a park surrounded by numerous buildings. It has plenty of parking and easy access too.

Terry,
As a taxpayer of Chicago, I'll be happy to pick up my share of the tab for the party, just as I have for the Bulls and the White Sox (one of which I'm not a fan of).
The Jay Pritzker Pavilion would be a beautiful place for it.

A big outdoor celebration would be just fabulous. This would certainly be more of an accomplishement than a winning sports team and is well worth the effort. I would love to be there!

Although the idea of a Chicago celebration does overjoy me, I would worry about the safety like anyone else. Politicians love their public gatherings to a fault, and though there's been plenty of incredible SS security for Obama since last year, this seems too dangerous at night.
If the city riots when we win the NBA championship, what would happen if we won the White house?

Andrew, I doubt Obama supporters will be rioting in the streets if he wins in November!

Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago...
Body count: In the last six months
292 killed (murdered) in Chicago; 221 killed in Iraq.
Sens. Barack Obama & Dick Durbin,
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.,
Gov. Rod Blogojevich,
House leader Mike Madigan,
Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike),
Mayor Richard M. Daley (son of Mayor Richard J. Daley)
.....Our leadership in Illinois.....all Democrats.
Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago.
Of course, they're all blaming each other.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!
State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country.
Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25%
highest in country. (Look 'em up if you want).
C hicago school system rated one
of the worst in the country.
This is the political culture that
Obama comes from in Illinois.
And he's gonna 'fix' Washington politics for us!!!
SURE!!!!!

Brad,
The Pritzker Pavillion - an appropriate venue for someone who has rec'd a lot of money from Freddie and Fannie. Has Penny bankrupt any banks lately like she did to Superior Bank.

Brad,
Too bad about your baseball team - maybe next century. But I do empathize with you, my team is going thru a three year title drought.

"Millennium Park, a legacy of Obama ally Mayor Richard Daley, "
Wow.
Suckin' up to the mayor, already, eh?
Who else will be on that "Obama ally" list? Emil? Rod?
A slew of winners you got there.

Just like the Cubs planned on their celebration long before they actually won a game in the post season.
You saw what happened there.
It's going to be a looong cold winter for the Obamaniacs. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr...

I really do not care where the election party will be held nor how cold or rainy it will be; I intend to be there with my family to see what will be a wonderful and historic sight.
I have also already made plans to be in DC the week of January 20th, 2009, to see Barack, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha as Barack is sworn in as our 45th president.
I really wish so many of my now passed on ancestors could have lived to see this time.

i'm so there.

The only party that'll be worth attending is the one if McCain wins.
Posted by: jfr | October 16, 2008 12:28 AM
I agree... Millenium or grant parks would be a nightmare for the secret service to secure. A big outdoor gathering sounds like a great idea -- but it could easily be at soldier feild, comisky or wrigly where there is much more limited access. and it could still be free.
Posted by: amb | October 16, 2008 1:04 AM
They'll have to use both parks to hold all the people.
I hope they put the whole campaign team on the photo-fountain. :-)

You're jumpin' the gun here, guys. With three weeks still to go before the election, assuming prior victory is hubris and sorely tempts the gods. For pete's sake, look what happened with the Cubs!

When is everyone going to start seeing beyond the "he's from Chicago!" facade and start seeing Obama for what he is really all about if he gets elected, namely higher taxes, bigger government, less freedoms, more intrusions into your lives, but this time it will come with a "Chicago Way" flavor that will end up leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth four years from now? If you like Richard Daley's Chicago, you are going to just love Barack Obama's America if you give him that opportunity.
Posted by: cgull | October 16, 2008 7:02 AM
some of you are waaaay overthinking this. i'm with Brad -- I don't care for *any* Chicago sports team, and yet we pay for their lovely celebrations. So, yes, let's celebrate Mr. Obama when he wins!
Posted by: marie s | October 16, 2008 7:48 AM
I will be there! Will they serve beer after the 7th inning?
Posted by: Jane | October 16, 2008 7:50 AM
How about the United Center? It holds lots of people and it's heated!
Posted by: Angela | October 16, 2008 8:01 AM
I bet it turns out like taste of Chicago with white t-shirt gangs harrassing the suburban Volvo-driving families that come in from the burbs. Then one gangster shoots at a rival gang. People scatter. Just waiting for the headlines of shots fired at ghetto Obama rally. It would give America their "Taste of Chicago" that they just ordered.

He better win then. Nobody wants to go to a loser's party.

We now have the biggest deficit in our history. The government has grown more under Bush than anytime in history. Our government has spied on it's own citizens.
Seems that we've already lived through your fears and you haven't even noticed.

Baseball analogies are a bit off here - elections aren't like the baseball postseason, they're more like the regular season, so the appropriate analogy is to where the Cubs were about a month ago with respect to making the playoffs, not what they did in October. Obama is way up with only a few weeks to go, and while it's still possible for a collapse, it's incredibly unlikely and gets more unlikely by the day. (the 2007 Mets were well over 99% likely to make the playoffs before choking in the final three weeks)
It may be too early to be SURE about victory, but it's not too early to start printing up the playoff tickets. Unlike the Republicans, the Democrats actually plan ahead and prepare for contingencies instead of making things up as you go and flailing around (see: Iraq War, Katrina, McCain-Palin 2008)
Posted by: doofman | October 16, 2008 9:08 AM
Doofman, you make a lot of sense with your analogy of the republic party, but I think, their thinking enough about the future right now to have the shredders in the White House working overtime. I’m sure when a Democratic President moves in there won’t be a shred of evidence about any conversation that took place in the White House while Cheney, Rove, and the other neo-cons were in power.

If Obama wins, it will certainly be worth celebrating. I will take my children out to join in the party.

As for you Obama naysayers...why don't you read up on McCain. He sure sounds "Presidential"!

Did you want him to hold the rally in Bill Ayers' living room ?? It never ceases to amaze me how offended some folks are by Obama- the same folks who loved Sarah Palin only because they liked how she looks in a skirt with makeup! I have 'enjoyed' watching the intolorance of so many in this election as expected. He's a socialist, a terrorist, an Arab, a Muslim- some guys will say anything to win an election!!
Posted by: raj towne | October 21, 2008 1:43 PM
This is a simple process:
1) get elected
2) then hold your "in the park" rally-celebration
What happens if ...
a) you're not elected
b) the overall election results carry over for 1-2 days?
Remember FL with Bush jr's earlier election ???

I don't even support Obama, but I wouldn't miss this for the world! C'mon it;s history!

Who cares if you support the guy or not? C'mon it's history!
Posted by: JP | October 21, 2008 8:24 PM
I will always wonder why in these times anyone would vote Republican - Take a hard look at your own financial situation and the situation of this country. Take a stand against a Republican president who abused his power, lied to the american public, put us in a war we can never win that has killed thousands of Americans and used millions of dollars that could better have been spent in America. Stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I VOTE FOR CHANGE!
Posted by: Becky | October 28, 2008 10:26 AM
I want to say that I believe Sen. Barack's steps have been ordered by God and there is no stopping both of them, now or in the future!
