OK, I'll admit I didn't know there was a legal sub-specialty field called fashion law but evidently there is.
Susan Scafidi, a legal scholar in that field and a visiting professor at the Fordham University Law School, has an observation on the news that the Republican National Committee paid $150,000 to outfit Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate.
"In our image-based society, the packaging of a candidate requires strategic spending on visuals, from stage makeup to backdrops to podiums at a flattering height -- and yes, costumes. As a result, it's difficult to argue that the RNC's purchase of clothing for Sarah Palin is an inappropriate expenditure on items for personal use, especially if they really do go to charity after the campaign. Still, given that neither party has given its male candidates a wardrobe makeover, the $150,000 spent at Saks and Neimans reinforces the unfortunate impression that Governor Palin is merely the conservatives' favorite dress-up doll."
Scafidi obviously knows a sound-bite when she sees it.

Sarah Palin's clothing bill for Sept 2008: $150,000
Sarah Palin's make-up bill for Sept 2008: $13,000
Total: $163,000
Average value of a home in the United States: $151,300
Average household income in 2007: $50,233
Boy, that Sarah Palin is just a rootin-tooin', huntin', hockey-mom salt-of-the-earth regular gal, don'tcha know! She just happens to be one who spends more money on shoes and lipstick in a month than most people's homes are worth. And three times what most US households make in a year.

John McCain how can I get my donation money back that I contributed to you. I did not contribute money for Sarah Palin and her families wardrobe. I would like a refund.

If Sarah Palin was as sharp and intelligent as McCain keeps saying she is, she surely should have foreseen the reaction to this issue and decided against buying such a expensive wardrobe. But, this is just one more example of her ignorance and her arrogance. Just imagine someone like that in the number 2 position, a heartbeat from the Presidency. No thanks! We've had that for eight years.

In a campaign appearance is what counts.
The RNC is right to apy for costumes to keep Governor Palin looking sharp.
You can't compare campaign clothes in the HDTV age to home prices.
Governor Palin is beautiful period and a smart woman who upsets pseudo intellectuals like Kathleen Parker. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

This is just tooo much..Also it is just another example of where the Republicans have stooped to..With the income they filed you would have thought she would have had clothes good enough without this ridiculous expenditure..PEOPLE ARE HURTING OUT HERE IN THE REAL WORLD...My son has not had a paycheck from his company in 3 weeks and there are millions more like this..Companies are trying to hang on, people are trying to scrape and buy gas and feed their families, millions are already layed off and they blow over $150,000 for clothes and makeup..DISGUSTING!!!.The Repubs have ruined our Country and it is time to cast your vote and say ENOUGH!!!.Let's get our Nation back in order...Obama 08'.

How many votes per dollar spent on Sarah (and the children?) for fashion did it take to lose one vote for John McCain? Sarah Palin will go down as the costliest VP nominee in more ways that one.
We arrived at this realization of what Ms Palin is without one negative word from Barack Obama.

Way to show those angry Marxist Socialist Libs how trickle down economics work. The money spent on these luxury items will let the retail salesperson keep his/her job for another week a shipping company gets paid, and a factory owner keeps his workers working extra hard to get those designer dresses out of their warehouse, into the stores, and of of the rack and to their final resting place, a wonderful American charity organization. If the angry Marxist Socialist Libs had there way, Gov. Palin wouldn't spend her money.

Obama is a class act. He told his campaign workers that anyone would be fired if they brought up anything about Palin's daughter (you know the one I mean). There hasn't been anything mentioned since Obama made it clear he wouldn't put up with it. Can you image the mud-slinging if it were the other way around?

Did the donars pay for her designer glasses also??..If you have to re-make someone..what were they before?..The sooner she goes back to Alaska the better and also a lot cheaper on the Repubs...

His salary, his wife's salary, his book royalties.

Yeah, Obama's such a big spender...I hear he had his shoes re-soled instead of just putting some cardboard inside when the soles wore out.
I couldn't care less how much the GOP spends to play dress up with Palin. She wouldn't be an issue at all if most Americans thought she was qualified for the job, but she's not and no amount of makeup will hide it.

Doesn't this whole "controversy" smack of sexism?? A guy can buy 4 suits and wear them all the time and still look okay. A woman has to constantly be changing and varying her wardrobe. I don't see what the big deal is. And let's remember she makes the least income of all the candidates. The next thing you know, we'll hear the make-up she wears was tested on animals.

Yes, why should it matter what she wears? Today I heard a Republican spokesman defend this expense because "what do you expect her to be seen in...(gasp) an L.L. Bean turtleneck!" (Now they will have to explain just what is so wrong with L.L. Bean turtlenecks) They are just primping her up for all those Joe six-pack plumbermen. Speaking of which, $150K would have bought a lot of six-packs for Joe the plumberman.

you can dress em up but you can't take em out!
Seriously, republicans have their priorities straight, ok to pay trillions to bailout wallstreet, and hundreds of thousands to dress up their small town gal, but not a dime for universal health care or increasing the minimum wage. Well, why would you care about the minimum wage when you can spend 13,000 on makeup and a fashion consultant. No wonder everyone was so touchy about that putting lipstick on a pig comment, turns out the good governor does act a little piggy when she's not telling everyone how holier than thou she is. Nice to see conservative values in action.

Have you see Biden lately? Dems need to make him over. He looks like a haggard old unkept man! Or could it be gaffe stress?

Jerry White says Palin's a "...smart woman who upsets pseudo intellectuals like Kathleen Parker." Uh, Jerry? Where you been the past month or so? It takes a pseudo intellectual to be able to put together an entire grammatical sentence, but a 'smart' person like Palin can't seem to be able to without a script?

Can Gov Palin return her campaign wardrobe as she said on her 10/23/08 interview with sean hannity. What woulf be the value for a charitable contribution?
