A clearly buoyant Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sat for an interview with Fox News's Carl Cameron in the wake of her vice presidential debate with Sen. Joe Biden which she survived quite well, especially since the expectations for her were pretty much at sea level.
Palin had great things to say about her first and perhaps last meeting with Biden. Listening to what she told Cameron, last night's debate was definitely good times. Here's an excerpt from the rush transcript provided by Fox News with the time codes. I haven't cleaned it up:
PALIN: 11: 00:10 There was a lot of eye contact and it was pleasant and it was, "Hey you know we're both in this together. We both understand what each other would be going through at this time." 11:00:19 Kinda wondering what's coming next, what Gwen is gonna ask us next. 11:00:23 So that connection, it was some good chemistry, and again at least I had a ball. It was fun.
But while she had good things to say about Biden, she wasn't showing Katie Couric a whole lot of love. Indeed, speaking of herself in the third person, she said the Palin in the Couric interviews was "annoyed" by the way Couric asked questions and followups.
Here's another excerpt:
PALIN: 11:04:41 Ok I'll tell you honestly the Sarah Palin in those interviews is a little bit annoyed because it's like, man, no matter what you say you're going to get clobbered. 11:04:49 If you choose to answer a question you are going to get clobbered on the answer. 11:04:53 If you choose to try and pivot and go on to another subject that you believe that Americans want to hear about you get clobbered for that too. 11:05:00 But in those Katie Couric interviews I did feel that there were a lot of things that she was missing in terms of an opportunity to ask what a V.P. candidate stands for. 11:05:09 What the values are represented in our ticket. I wanted to talk about Barack Obama increasing taxes which would lead to killing jobs. 11:05:18 I wanted to talk about his proprosal to increase government spending by another trillion dolars. Some of his comments that he has made about the war that I think may, in my world disqualifies someone from consideration as the next commander in chief. 11:05:32 Some of his comments about Afghanistan and what we are doing there supposedly -- just air raiding villages and killing civilians. That's reckless. 11:05:41 I wanted to talk about things like that. So I guess I have to apologize about being a little annoyed but that is also an indication of being outside that Washington elite, outside of the media elite also and just wanted to talk to Americans without the filter and let them know what we stand for. 11:05:55"
Did she really expect that Couric was going to allow her to deliver her talking-points unimpeded? Governor, you can't be serious.
Something else to notice is how Palin used the Cameron interview to disgorge herself of some of debate prep she wasn't able to use last night.
For instance, after Couric asked he about Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, she was clearly stumped except for Roe vs. Wade.
It was a noticeable lack of knowledge on the part of a vice presidential nominee and, honestly, a governor of Alaska, since one recent controversial Supreme Court decision arose from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska's Prince William Sound.
Gwen Ifill was smart not to follow up on Couric's question since that was an area Palin's handlers would obviously have her cram for in case either Ifill or Biden followed up on Biden's question.
But Cameron asked her about that part of the Couric interviews, which allowed Palin to show off what she had learned in debate prep.
Here's the relevant excerpt:
PALIN 11:07:30 A recent one, Kennedy vs. Lousiana where the Supreme Court will tell a state that they can't impose the death penalty even on the heinous crimes of repeat child rapists that a state its rights were taken away by the Supreme Court 11:07:46 and we would not be able to decide for ourselves whether the death penalty in a case like that could be implemented or not. 11:07:51 That one I'm certainly not a suppoter of that decision. 11:07:56 The Kelo case also with the eminent domain--that affects me as Govenor. 11:08:58 It affected me as a mayor also. 11:09:00 Property rights are so precious in this nation and for the Supreme Court to have sided with government instead of the people, the property owners on that --that was frustrating. another one that personally affecting me also 11:08:16 the Exxon Valdez oil spill. 11:08:17 The siding with the oil companies they decimated Alaska's coastline and much of our fisheries and much of our coastal communities' livelihoods of people who live there and they sided with Exxon on the punishment--the punitive damage that was to be awarded, Exxon won on that one and in a sense that was frustrating. 11:08:36
All in all, her Fox News interview is a much needed Friday afternoon diversion. Now, back to worrying about the financial markets meltdown.

Yes, how dare Couric ask questions that required knowledge and facts to answer! Facts and knowledge aren't a fair topic in an election. Katioe should have only asked questions that she was sure that Palin knew the answers too, and that fir in with exactly what Palin wanted to talk about. Facts and Knowledge? Left wing nonsense. We need good all american sound bites. Drill, Baby, Driil! Thanks but no thanks. I can see Russia.

I hope she received better treatment than old Barney did.

What an elitist. She thinks she's above answering questions. She thinks she is sooo special that she should be treated differently than every other politician. Sorry Gov. Palin, no special treatment for you. Toughen up and get used to not being treated just like everyone lse, rather than being coddled like a diva.

As she also said in the debate, she feels that if you don't like the question or don't know the answer, just pivot and talk about whatever you want. Darn right. She needs to stop blaming the "filter" and realize that it's her own words that have caused her problems. Most of what Tina Fey said last SNL were Sarah's own words. Sarah Palin is more annoying than Katie Couric.

Yes, Sarah, we can see why Katie Couric “annoyed” you – how dare she ask questions of you that you should know the answer to. It’s not fair of Couric to assume that you would have an opinion on what makes John McCain a “maverick”. Nor was it right of her to ask you how your proximity to Russia makes you uniquely qualified to be Vice President. It’s almost like she wanted to see if you could articulate a thought that wasn’t drilled in to your head by some RNC strategist.
Obviously, it’s too much to expect that our elected officials have a broad knowledge of the issues that face us as a nation. It’s crazy for us to ask someone to back up their buzz-words with facts, or at the very least, examples. And it’s certainly sexist of us to think that anyone running for public office, regardless of sex, should be prepared for an interview.
The best thing for Palin would have been to own her failure and tell the American people that she would try harder in the future to be well prepared when she sits down for an interview. Instead, we get excuses and jabs at the media for making her look bad.
We’ve already had eight years of excuses and jabs. We certainly don’t need another four…

She wanted an interview where she gets to choose what to talk about????? Get her off of the ticket, please.
Posted by: justsayin | October 3, 2008 4:13 PM
THAT WAS FUN. I really enjoyed that. It's such a difference between feeling like I'm all bunched up and stressed waiting for each question (with a very stern interviewer who looks like they are out for blood) and never getting many answers to real questions I have so that I'm able to actually find out where SHE STANDS on many issues VS this friendlier approach that gives me so much more. KUDOS on that one ! ! !

Palin likes to talk about Joe Six Pack - but the GOP policies do not respect Old Joe. .............

Sarah Palin does not have the judgment nor maturity to realize she's (again) said something dumb. Would she color her remarks to foreign leaders based on her current emotional state? She is apparently too immature to actually put "country first" as she allows herself self-indulgent emotions as the self-appointed arbiter of what the country wants to hear. She's an embarrassment.

Charlie Gibson had it right: hubris.

Sarah needs to go back to journalism 101 and retake the class where they talked about the difference between news (where the reporter asks the questions) and advertising (where you get to talk about whatever you want).
Posted by: tad | October 3, 2008 4:50 PM
I wonder if she ever read '1984' - I bet she'd especially like portrayal of 'The Ministry of Truth,' which spoke directly to the people...
Posted by: judd | October 3, 2008 4:57 PM
Note to Palin:
Something called 'a speech' is where you get to talk about whatever it is you want to talk about.
'An interview' is where the journalist decides the questions.
'A debate' is where the moderator decides the questions.
It's not all about you, Sarah. Honest.

I want to tell you why many women were turned off by Sara Palin’s debate last night. Yes, it’s exciting to have a woman running for vice president but --- to have an uninformed woman who doesn’t read newspapers and cannot speak coherently running for vice president is an embarrassment.
Her performance last night consisted of grins, winks and a constant repetition of sound bytes and catchphrases. It seemed as if the majority of her answers were scripted, memorized and condensed into simple slogans. Not once did she appear conversant on foreign or economic issues. Many high school students read newspapers and most of them could have done a better job.
When Palin didn’t know the answers to a question, she changed the subject in an effort to hide her ignorance. Did she really fool some Americans into believing that the reason she would not answer the questions is because doing so would not be “straight talk?”
Maybe Palin’s constituents in Alaska are comfortable with a folksy governor who appears uneducated and out of touch with national and foreign policies. We have had one President who was elected on the basis of good looks, charm and friendliness. No one seemed to mind that he was not smart, could not think on his feet and was not knowledgeable about world politics and basic economic principles. He compensated for his lack of intelligence by hiring smart people who did understand these issues and following their advice in forming national policy. Was anyone surprised that he hired bad people and his trusted advisors were looking out for themselves rather than this country?
Are we going to make the same mistake again? Are we going to hand over the possible leadership of this nation in a time of crisis to a candidate whose appeal lies in her looks, outgoingness, and unsophisticated language even though she has no grasp of national and world issues and has difficulty articulating her thoughts? The prospect of Palin ever becoming President of this nation is horrifying!
Posted by: Lzur | October 3, 2008 5:44 PM
Hasn't she ever done an interview before? I'm fairly sure they have reporters up in Alaska. I'm fairly sure that those reporters occasionally ask the Governor questions. I'm fairly sure that those questions aren't always on the topic the Governor wants to discuss. So what the heck is Palin talking about? Does she think she should get some sort of special treatement? Does she think she should be immune from questioning?
If she can't handle some straight forward questions from Katie Couric how is she going to handle world leaders who don't care about annoying her? How is she going to be able to stand up to Putin? If Katie Couric can drive her to her knees in a discussion, how can we ever consider placing her in a postion where she will be a heartbeat away from being the President? How can we ever run the risk of her being in charge of our diplomacy?

Oh...and did you notice the wink? What was that all about?
And her voice? Squeeky, high pitched and her slang? Soooooooooo unappropriate for the position.
Sarah is out of her depths. She needs lots more maturity and she needs a mentor. How 'bout Hilliary?

Governor Palin knew Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with during the Couric interview. She is bright and talented... She simply did not want to be caught in a contraversy about Supreme Court rulings ... the High Court is the the Supreme of the land, and vice presidential candidates should really leave the judiciary branch alone.

I'd be annoyed to, if I had to talk to a Tom Petty look-a-like named Katie.

Don't feel alone Sarah, Katie annoys me too. I can recall when Katie got that big contract and moved from the Today show to the anchor chair - there were plenty of people out there that questioned her experience and from the looks of her ratings perhaps they were right. To call Katie Couric a "journalist" is a joke, she came from the softball couch of the Today show where she learned that hard hitting question, "What do you read?"
Rates right up there with the great Barbara Walters query "If you were a tree, what would you be?" Sarah should have really shocked her and said "Katie, I read the Bible".
As for her performance at the debate I thought she was great because she did it her way and that's what she needed to do.
Posted by: vla | October 3, 2008 7:09 PM
She did fine. Her actions speak louder than her words, anyway. It takes guts to get up there and do what she did. After all the terrible things that Hillary went through, I can't believe any woman wants to put herself forward to run for public office. Kudos to Sarah for trying. Y'all ought to try it yourselves, you know.
Posted by: C. | October 3, 2008 7:12 PM
Good for Katie for not letting Palin get away with her usually vapid responses. Now I guess it's part of the GOP initiation rites that the ex-tv "journalist" (if one could elevate her to that level) should complain about the media. Bruce and John D must be proud and just as happy to to provide any relevant content.

Wow Wee.
Wouldn't you think a candidate with a journalism degree would be the most likely to do well in an interview?
Yeesh. Hopeless.

If she thought Katie harsh, wait till she sees what Tina Fey does to her tomorrow night.

Seriously why did McCain pick a running mate that isn't knowledgeable about important/controversial cases in the Supreme Court. And on thop of that who also is pretty much isolated from other states and interactions with people that live in the other United States. I am very dissapointed to hear that she got angry that she was being grilled by Katie an interviewer/ a journalist. That's what journalists do and especially to those running for elected positions during an election year. She had no right to expect that it was going to be easy. The reason for her being interviewed is for the public to get to know more about her and where she stands on important issues, what her temperment is and whether or not she can handle presidential duties if it comes to that.

I've read a LOT of rantings on these posts and heard them elsewhere (MSM, articles, tv shows etc.) from women who come across as supposedly having this above average intelligence.....and yet>WHERE'S THE BEEF? It usually sounds more like little girls fussing with no basis, rather than articulate women giving some EXACTS on what particulars they take issue with Palin on.
THE REAL RUB >
INDEPENDENT WOMEN vaguely complaining about a female who has been promoted to being RUNNING MATE FOR THE SECOND HIGHEST POSITION IN THE AMERICA... and to sum up the majority of attacks I've been hearing I post this from above>

Palin's "cutsey-wootsy," high-school girlsy demeanor during the debate would be unbecoming for a Vice President who would be meeting heads of state. If this was her attempt at "charm," couldn't she have selected something more gracious and mature sounding? She sounds the same age and educational level as her pregnant daughter.
Posted by: Susan | October 4, 2008 5:40 AM
I would be annoyed by someone who, JUST by asking me questions - which one does when interviewing someone - made me look like an idiot. Yeah, that would annoy me that the interviewer was clearly more intelligent than I and clearly more qualified to be VP than I. It would DEFINITELY annoy me that most burger flippers and gas pumpers are more intelligent than I, so I can see where Palin is coming from. I would be annoyed if I were her too.

She probably did just what she was told to do...smile alot...(that'll get some STUPID men on board), wink and use your charm, and fend off any criticism about your intelligence level by first saying "I may not answer the questions the way you'd like"...and by the way...are we EVER going to get some politicians who can ALL pronounce NUC...LE...AR???? McCAIN REALLY THINKS WE'RE STUPID...IT TOOK ALL THIS TIME FOR US TO GO THROUGH ALL OF OBAMA'S INFO...AND WE'RE SUPPOSED TO ELECT THIS BIMBO AFTER JUST BEING INTRODUCED 5 WEEKS AGO?????? *

Jerry White: You'd vote for SATAN himself if he was running against Obama, wouldn't you? Sorry old boy, you're swimming UPSTREAM!!!!!

Grow up people!! Since when did an accent qualify or disqualify you for a national office? Since when did being female or your looks affect how you interact with global heads of state? Condoleeza Rice, who happens to be an Alabama native, with an accent, female and nice looking, has done a darn good job of holding her own over the past few years. And why all the petty name calling? Grow up! I believe if you read the statement carefully you will find Palin says she is annoyed with THE PALIN you see in the Couric interview (meaning she is annoyed with herself.) I don't believe she says " I, Sarah Palin, am annoyed with Couric". Who in this precious world of God's has not gotten annoyed with themselves in the aftermath of a sink or swim situation when a lot was on the line? Shatter the glass ceiling and bury the double standard. Palin is just as capable as anyone else running for office.
Posted by: GROW UP AMERICANS!!! | October 4, 2008 1:33 PM
I LOVE THE EXCUSE I HEAR IN THE MEDIA etc...that 'women are just harder on women' ha ha ha. NO THEY AREN'T, women are petty and nasty and hateful and mean as hell.... and GOD FORBID if a female is pretty, they are ALL OVER HER. I recall a very pretty family member going to college, and here she was trying to improve her mind and these VERY UGLY ANGRY WOMEN in her class started going after her with a bunch of superficial complaints about her appearance etc..like there was no tomorrow. I was so mad that I sent a giant teddy bear from a 'secret admirer' to her class with a VERY hard hitting card attached (knowing full well they would read it before she arrived to class ha), and she NEVER HAD ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THEM AGAIN ha ha.
There is so much pressure to go along with some of these FEMALE BULLIES that most just go along with what ever they say rather than being victims, but NOT ME, I'll always think for myself and THEY WON'T EVER BE BSing ME ha ha, I HAVE KNOWN THEIR TYPES ALL MY LIFE : )

Bottom line: I don't remember ANYONE bringing out a candidate that we're supposed to familiarize ourselves with and vote in as VICE PRESIDENT with only 8 weeks to go before the election itself!!!...the KEY WORD HERE BEING 'FAMILIARIZE.'..a newspaper in my area had the headline the next day saying "Sarah WHO???" (the Burlington, Iowa Hawk Eye newspaper). How many of YOU ever HEARD of her before her grand entrance???

The national convention votes on the vice presidential nominee after they have officially acted on their choice for the presidential nomination. Some presidential nominees have waited until they have been officially nominated to announce their vp choice. Others, having clinched the presidential nomination, make their choice known before the convention. There is no rule on this, in fact, FDR and Adlai Stevenson let the convention choose the vice president without making a recommendation.
I've seen Biden and recognized him from years ago to presnt, but no clue what issues he supported or didn't.
Obama however is TOP OF THE TICKET and I've never seen his face. I still am not sure what all he stands for. I am learning about his radical ties ....it's pretty bad.
