Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has hit a cultural nerve with her line that the difference between a "hockey mom", like herself, and a pit bull is lipstick.
Turns out there is a legion of hockey moms, what with there being more than 300,000 kids playing hockey in the U.S. and who knows how many more in Canada. And like all self-respecting demographics, or wannabe demographics, they have a web site, hockeymoms.com, whichs deal with the arcana of the vocation, like how to buy a van, how to find a rink and a primer on specialized lingo. Hint: a Zamboni is not a vegetable.
As the home page illustrates, the site is trying to reap the PR benefit of Palin's remark, though it's not clear there's a consensus about its aptness. But there does seem to be a pride of passion among hockey moms, even if they think the Republican vice presidential candidate's comparison stereotypes them, or is unkind to pit bulls.
