When your campaign is losing on the issues and losing the debates, the only thing left to try is personal attacks to impugn the other candidates character. Unfortunately for John McCain and Sarah Palin, they lose the character debate too. Sarah Baracuda may be useful to McCain for launching attacks, but she proved beyond a doubt she's not qualified to be VP. She also has the Troopergate investigation results to look forward to. John "I'm suspending my campaign" McCain hasn't looked all that stable recently. I guess desperation will do that to you. The lower they sink in these attacks, the better Obama/Biden will look.

Has such negativity always been a hallmark of American elections? Naive perhaps but I always tune out when a candidate starts talking about their opposition. Not only is it hard to award credibility for whatever the shortcoming may be, (candidates are hardly independent), but why give 'oxygen' to your opponent? The Republican candidates pale in comparison to the Democratic ones. Though Sarah Palin is an idiot,I believe speaking against her probably only lends substance that otherwise would not exist.
I had thought McCain was great for speaking up on behalf of the Dalai Lama and Tibet. But my son pointed out that the issues are what are important, not "photo-ops." And since focusing on that - on the issues rather than on some personal fondness, it's clear to see Obama and Biden are by far the best choice.

This just in: Palin says she refuses to suspend her wink due to economic crisis, claiming, having these cutesy, folksy things help people forget she knows little about leading.

When you are down in the polls, you will do anything if the issues don't work for you. If after the debate on Tuesday things don't get better for McCain, I am expecting false attacks on Obama for being a Muslim who wants to make Osama Bin Laden the head of Homeland Security.

Can a presidential candidate justify a long and friendly relationship with someone who, back in the 1970s, extolled violence and committed crimes in the name of a radical ideology -- and who has never shown remorse or admitted error? When the candidate in question is Barack Obama, John McCain says no. But when the candidate in question is John McCain, he's not so sure.

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution. The two have also served together on the board of a foundation. When their connection became known, McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk-show host, Liddy spent more than 4 years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

Which principles would those be? The ones that told Liddy it was fine to break into the office of the Democratic National Committee to plant bugs and photograph documents? The ones that made him propose to kidnap anti-war activists so they couldn't disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention? The ones that inspired him to plan the murder (never carried out) of an unfriendly newspaper columnist?

Liddy was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history -- and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law. He has said he has no regrets about what he did, insisting that he went to jail as "a prisoner of war."

All this may sound like ancient history. But it's from the same era as the bombings Ayers helped carry out as a member of the Weather Underground. And Liddy's penchant for extreme solutions has not abated.

In 1994, after the disastrous federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, he gave some advice to his listeners: "Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. ... Kill the sons of bitches."

He later backed off, saying he meant merely that people should defend themselves if federal agents came with guns blazing. But his amended guidance was not exactly conciliatory: Liddy also said he should have recommended shots to the groin instead of the head. If that wasn't enough to inflame any nut cases, he mentioned labeling targets "Bill" and "Hillary" when he practiced shooting.

Given Liddy's record, it's hard to see why McCain would touch him with a 10-foot pole. On the contrary, he should be returning his donations and shunning his show. Yet the senator shows no qualms about associating with Liddy -- or celebrating his service to their common cause.

How does McCain explain his howling hypocrisy on the subject? He doesn't. I made repeated inquiries to his campaign aides, which they refused to acknowledge, much less answer. On this topic, the pilot of the Straight Talk Express would rather stay parked in the garage.

That's an odd policy for someone who is so forthright about his rival's responsibility. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

Senate floor, 2006-May-25, John McCain, "For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac... and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market... the GSEs need to be reformed without delay." Has anyone noticed that the Chicago Trib blogs keep getting posts from someone calling himself or herself "SuperiorBank failure?"

I did some checking around on this. I found a pretty good read, which differs from the story posted at Obama's website. Issue is the failure of the $1.1B asset thrift Superior Bank FSB, which was based in Oak Brook, IL. It failed in 2001.

Penny Pritzker is Obama's finance chairman. This article ties Pritzker directly to the failure of this bank. Penny Pritzker was on the board of directors of the bank and its parent company throughout much of its existence, apparently, and througout its collapse. Under Penny Pritzker's leadership the bank moved into subprime lending. Penny Pritzker apparently convinced federal regulators to allow the bank to move into subprime lending, whcih is why it failed.

"Sworn deposition testimony puts Penny Pritzker not only on the board of the bank and its holding company, Coast, but personally leading the meeting to persuade regulators to let the bank into the subprime market."

In America, we don't condemn people on the basis of who they may know or speak to - we sacrificed millions of lives in WWII and the Cold War to oppose the Third Reich, the Soviet Union and other dictatorships that practiced such tactics to squelch free speech and dissent.

Reading most of the comments to this blog I have to tell you it seems like what you would have seen in letters to the editor of the old "Daily Worker." For those of you who have grown up in the last 25 years or so or have been taught history in public schools during that time, that was the communist daily newspaper in America. A candidate's track record, and associations are always a legitimate issue when running for President. Let's take a look at the qualifications, judgement, and experience of Obama, who is running for President. Obama had 25 years to fulfill the potential he displayed as a rising start at Harvard Law School ... and, how did he live up to that potential? ... He chose to align himself with anti-American racist, Jeremiah Wright for TWENTY YEARS ... along with Ferrahkan, Rezko, Ayers, and others. As a community organizer, he registered thousands of voters in Chicago ... then, when he ran for the state legislature, he took away their votes, by disqualifying his opponent (a black woman) on a technicality. As a U.S. Senator, he voted present 160 times ... he never called a meeting on the Afghanistan committee he chaired (although he NOW says we must shift all our military from Iraq to Afghanistan). He claimed Foreign Policy experience from a 9 day whirlwind photo op to 6 countries. And, he spent almost half of his tenure neglecting his responsibilities as a U.S. Senator, so he could run for President. Senator McCain served America honorably for 22 years in the military. He proved his love for America, as well as his honor, integrity and character, by refusing early release as a P.O.W., even while being tortured. He served America as a 'contributing' U.S. Senator, working across the aisle, for 20 years. If Obama's Twentyfive year track record shows he lacks judgement, and can't be trusted, who cares what he says about Health Care and the Economy! What Obama never learned is Character. He simply can't be trusted ... ask Jeremiah Wright, a friend of 20 years, who Obama betrayed for personal ambition ... and, you Obama supporters really think he won't betray you If he gets elected??? If he gets elected, you Obama supporters will be facing a HUGE disillusionment !!!

McCain and Palins hypocrisy and transparent attempt at smearing will focus back onto them. Obama was 8 years old when Ayers and his wife where charged but never convicted. His anti-war philosophy, although very radical at the time was unpopular but he was not involved in blowing up toilets in federal buildings himself. Ayers was voted as Chicago’s citizen of the year for his work on teaching school children peace and funding raising for impoverish communities in need of school supplies. I think it’s safe to say if he is a terrorist in this day and age, he’d be in Guantanamo right now.

Saying Obama is palling around with terrorists is essentially saying that the University of Chicago, one of most important institutions in Chicago, is harboring terrorists and a hotbed for domestic terrorist activities. I am surprised they aren't getting more upset over the whole ordeal.

It amazes me the level that the Republican candidates are stooping to win the election. It is true, rather than use all of this energy as a senator, and governor and possibly next president/VP, to create constructive ideas that will benefit both parties, they are contempt to try and tear down the Democratic party. Politics in this country has never been a truly moral practice, but at least it could be conducted civilly, and with respect to both candidates. Both parties should be using the debates and campaign trail to state their views on the current conditions of the country, and how they plan to implementing initiatives to correct it. It should never be a knock-down-drag-out brawl, it should always be about the citizens of this country and their best interests.

I went into this election as an independent not finding anything to sway me to vote for Obama, or to vote for McCain, (all the candidates I had considered voting for, were phased out during the primaries). However despite the recent attacks and accusations towards the Obama campaign, I find it increasingly difficult to vote for Senator McCain. Although it is namely Sarah Palin who is throwing out the accusations, it is Senator McCain's responsibility to ensure that his campaign, and running mate conduct themselves in a civilized, as decent as possible manner, and he has failed at this.

Sarah Palin may be intellectually incurious, but her capacity to incite hatred with her venomous words cannot be underestimated. For this reason, she is extremely dangerous.

Obama had to receive Secret Service protection early in the campaign, because he was receiving hate mail and death threats.

The people in Florida who said "terrorist" and "kill him" are exactly the kind of folks who would might something crazy given the chance.

And let's not forget the 3 people who were arrested in Denver during the Democratic convention. They wanted to kill him themselves.

As for John McCain's "honor," I am beginning to wonder if he ever had any to begin with. His selection of Palin is insulting to the American populace, and is a joke to the rest of the world.

With the economy in disarray, what relevance does what someone did 40 years ago have--especially when Obama was a child living in Hawaii?

Their desire to turn the page on discussions of the economy reflects their moral and intellectual bankruptcy.
I hope that they will get the trouncing on 11/04 that they so richly deserve.
