Talk about ratings.

The debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden last night tied for the second-most-watched presidential or vice presidential debate of all time, Nielsen now reports.

Only Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter in 1980 outdrew these two -- with the 1990 presidential debate drawing 80 million viewers

Palin and Biden drew a national audience of 69.9 million -- matching the second debate among Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and H. Ross Perot in 1992,

And of course, the 2008 running mates drew 17.5 million more viewers than the top of the ticket did last week, when Barack Obama and John McCain held their first debate on Friday night. Obama and McCain will meet again on Tuesday, maybe a better TV night.

"Publiic curiosity about Sarah Palin clearly drove these higher ratings,'' Nielsen reports.
.
The actual sum of the audience watching Palin and Biden on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telefutura, Telemundo, BBC-America, CNBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, and MSNBC: 69,989,000.

For more on historical ratings of TV debate viewership, see Nielsen.

The way she was struttin' onto the stage blowin' kisses 'n winkin', ya'da thought she was runnin' for Mrs. America. Then I had an awful thought. Perhaps she DOES understand American mentality, hence the corn pone pandering.

It may have been 'tied' for number two, but Palin mopped the floor with Plugs.

Not only did Sarah out debate him, she looked straight into the camera, while Plugs looked at the pro-Obama moderator.

What a joke when Plugs lied 12 times about his and Obama's record.

Plugs lives on a 2 acre estate and spends his time at Home Depot?...give us all a break!

Palin came off sounding like a pre-programmed robot who was reading talking points off of her note cards.

I'm willing to bet that even she couldn't make sense of what she was saying.

the VP debate was stunning. Palin did a decent job faking about 20% of the questions and didn't even bother answering the other 80%.

i couldn't help thinking of the end of the movie Billy Madison, when the debate moderator says to Adam Sandler, "Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

I think it was public curiosity about Sarah, and it was also public curiosity about Biden--who stayed relatively low through all the Sa-Ra-Rah-Rah! and Lipstick. How he'd debate in a Vice Pick forum--given his Pres Pick forum didn't capture people to catapult him to the nomination. His past too--would he be condescending or gaffe prone. In all, I think the public was drawn in by the curiosity of an odd pairing--yet familiar because of Hillary (experience) and Barack (new guy). Overhanging was the question of what happened to the pit bull with the lipstick in Katie C's chair?

Palin did more than a decent job. This election is about personal responsibility vs help from the Federal Government with people like Joe and Obama making decisions on how to spend your hard earned money! http://www.bop-o-rama.com

Nice to see the political hacks out in force trying to spin for one side or the other. I think you'll find the CBS and CNN polls structurally deficient in their sampling and how the questions were asked, and you'll also find that the heartland disagrees strongly with the big city intelligentsia.

Time to stop beating your chests with self-importance and start understanding how the people really feel -- what are their unmet needs, why do they hate politicians and "speaking point politicos" who can't express an original thought, but are sure good at repeating what they're spoon fed. Why are they fed up, and not going to listen to the lies and b.s. of politicians who spend all their time trying to stay in power, line their pockets and screw the electorate.

The "debate" (what a joke this misnomer is -- does anyone in this country understand what a debate is?) was unwinnable by Joe, because he's the wrong man for the job. It was only Sarah's to lose. I'll let others decide who won or lost, but you can read my pre-debate analysis here: http://www.anti-marketer.com

Jeers to Palin - By gosh, golly, bless your heart, you studied hard! It's just that, you know, you were supposed to answer the questions posed by Gwen, not written on your note cards. You do get props for not drooling on yourself though.

Maybe we could have a "JOINT DEBATE" McCain & Palin vs Obama & Biden. That would be a first.

I think she did an awesome job. For 70 million viewers watching (and both knew this thing was going to rival #1 viewership/btw, 69,989,000 rounds UP to 70 million, not down to 69.9m) I think she did awesome. I woulda had to wear a diaper...

Palin didn't make a complete fool of herself again - that performance standard alone tells it all. She repeated the text they prepped her with, not being capable of adding anything more to the debate but the usual clichés about being Joe Six Pack, a Maverick, and a hockey mom. People that support her because she is similarly uninformed must ask themselves if they are ready for the White House too. What an absurd measure of leadership. She never once offered any policy differences between McCain Palin and Bush. Biden , on the other hand, pressed the attack with clear policy statements, and facts - mostly correct.. The differences between candidates were stark, one seasoned and knowledgeable, the other a wind-up Pit Bull with Lipstick who hasn't a clue about how poorly prepared she really is. In this regard, more than 2700 concerned medical doctors placed a full page add in the New York Times today asking for McCain's full medical report in light of his bout with highly lethal invasive melanoma. The unobstructed release of this report for expert review is more critical than ever.

SNL coattails.

I wants to see Tina Fey in her tight cheerleader outfit with pom poms deciding what shade of lipstick---

With M.C. Cain as the leering sophomore trying to sneak a peek.

That's what he was doing on the first "outing together".

Cindy MCC meanwhile back at the ranch was rummaging through the medicine cabinet.

Looking for lipstick? Not.

Looking at those numbers>FOX needs to go back to being what viewers really miss about them> THE ONLY PLACE TO GET NEWS THAT APPEALS TO MAIN STREAM AMERCIA. I don't think it's boding well for them to try and draw in such opposites for ratings (mainstream and FAR LEFT don't sit well together). Stick to what works, I rarely watch anymore.

It's no different for CNN and MSNBC in that they went from the left (sometimes center) to the FAR LEFT or a SINGLE DEMOGRAPHIC for ratings this election season......most viewers are wise to all this and tune it out. Wolfe has probably had more changes> with two people of opposite parties debating more now (rather than ONE ON FROM THE LEFT) but the balance isn't consistant enough to bother most times. CNN has changed their entire base to appeal to a single demographic that most supports Obama with a very slanted contributor that causes me to keep surfing anytime I see him on. I'll stop for LOU but unfortunately his group sessions are so slanted you're left feeling you are drawn in by a carrot only to get hit with a stick ha.

However, FOX has some hard hitters like HANNITY and now HUCKABEE that we so far can reliably count on....the rest have been tweeked to much SOME BIG FAVORITES UNFORTUNATELY for ratings, that give it unreliability (I want to relax while watching...not be ready to be miffed you sold out for ratings).

GLAD I COULD HELP ! ! !

GET A PALIN INTERVIEW and I'll watch....put her down just to try and broker an interview and I WILL TUNE YOU OUT LONG BEFORE SHE GETS THERE.

"and it was also public curiosity about Biden"

Nobody cares about old hair plugs Biden, they were watching to see Sarah. Biden outright LIED 10 times during the debate and the msm still hasn't called him out on it.

Sarah Palin sounds like George Bush with a different accent...

Palin certainly held her own in the eyes of everyone who didn't already hate her.

I heard Palin recite talking point after talking point and not once answer the question asked. If she doesn't have the ability to comprehend a simple question and to think on her own (it was supposed to be a debate you know), what gives anyone the idea she is competent enough to be President if nature takes it's course with McCain.
Maybe she could wink at all the evil in the world and they would just fawn over her like some of the folks making pro-Palin statements.

The high number of viewers came to see Governor Sarah Palin not plagiarist and liar Joe Biden. McCain/Palin 08! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

go to fact check. In summary, Palin was incorrect (whether lying or stretching the truth or offering selective information out of context) in the summary 4 times to Biden's 2. In the Analysis, she made 9 gaffes as opposed to Biden's 6.

Both of the candidates are stretching the truth at times, but Palin is guilty more often.

And when you consider she didn't answer many of the questions... I wonder what the numbers would have been if she tried.

Here's what Hillary said...."I think she's very good," Clinton said, praising Palin on Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles-based radio show Friday morning. "It's amazing: she's been thrust into the national spotlight with very little preparation and I think that, all things considered, you saw a very composed and effective debater last night."

Fire the GOP! Change the water in Washington and let's once again get acquainted with honest initiative. It is incredibly humiliating that a once respected man "picked" Sarah Palin to stand beside him as running mate during such a crucial time in this country. One of the more important goals right now is to regain the respect of other nations. When Sarah Palin stands up to debate and gives "shout outs" to "Joe Six Pack". and absurdly winks and uses the word "lame" I know we are not being represented well. If anyone believes that "folksy" and "relateable" are what we need right now then you never learned to pay attention. You can't lie and lead....it will never work.
