Sarah Palin, campaigning in "old clothes from'' a "consignment shop in Anchorage,'' is criss-crossing Virginia today, in a bid to save a state that hasn't voted Democratic in presidential contests since 1964.
The Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee also is attempting to regain that Joe-Sixpack image, dismissing the controversy over her party-financed $150,000 wardrobe from Neiman Marcus and Saks as "ridiculous.''
Palin showed up at an event Sunday night in Asheville, N.C., wearing jeans, and told a campaign crowd in Florida earlier in the day:
"This whole thing with the wardrobe, I try to just ignore it because it's so ridiculous... Those clothes, they are not my property,'' she said of the RNC-financed wardrobe, some of which is being returned and some bound for charity bins (as presidential nominee John McCain explained on Meet the Press on Sunday.)
"I'm not taking them with me,'' Palin said in Florida. "I'm back to wearing my old clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska."
The Associated Press contributed.

Comments
Wow, She wears her own clothes (mostly). I'm so very impressed. That does it. I will vote for Palin because she wears incredibly expensive clothes paid for by campaign contributions only part of the time.

This is what happens when lying becomes an everyday occurrence. Consignment shop jeans? Please. Nobody cared that the GOP bought her clothes (to keep up with Cindy McSame), but to swing wildly and somehow claim that you're homeless Joe-the-Plumber and buy your clothes at a consignment shop is ridiculous.
This is your future savior Repubs?

This is all so scripted, so phony---and also waaaay too late. Can't wait until she's back home in Wasilla--and once more obscure.

This is all just so pathetic. Don't we have something more important to think about?

Aw, shucks, Palin is an everyday gal who wears consignment clothing. She really is a regular Jane Six-Pack. Now I'm voting for her!

" Country First ", Senator McCain !!? Choosing a a Vice-Presidential candidate that champions creationism in our schools, censoring our Libraries and denying every woman in America the right to privacy, but, then, claim it for her daughter only, is very unacceptable !! May be in the the new nation that Alaska would be, if her and her husband, ever succeed in annexing Alaska from the rest our country, they may have all of those unconstitutional and repressive policies enforced, in their new nation. I wonder what they would call it, The Fourth Reich !! Leave all of your freedoms at the borders !!
Senator McCain must have been distracted, beyond belief, when he chose Governor Palin !! She 'll be too busy finagling money from our government, for private purpose, or trying to get so and so's brother-in-law fired from their jobs !! We do not need an unqualified person, a heartbeat away from the Presidency, particularly, Governor Palin !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Why is it that it is only the wardrobes of FEMALE candidates that are ever commented on? Has anyone priced Obama or McCain's suits? Does Joe Biden ever face a wardrobe comment? Why is it that the media (and apparently the public) were obsessed first with Hillary's pants suits and now with Sarah's borrowed wardrobe? And yet no one in the media alleges sexism has affected the primaries or this presidential campaign. So much for equality in America.
Posted by: deborah | October 27, 2008 11:41 AM
This is soooo rediculous, the dems are showing their ignorance by making such an issue about something that has no place in this campaign with all that is going on in the world.
Grow up people, you're not in high school anymore where what you wear is the topic of the day.
CARL, you must be kidding or you haven't been reading the newspapers or watching any of the comments on CNN, CSNBC, etc. They have talked of almost nothing else. "This is your future savior Repubs." What is that supposed to mean?
Posted by: Ruth | October 27, 2008 11:46 AM
Deborah--maybe because the DNC is NOT purchasing Obama's and Biden's clothes? Regarding Hillary's pantsuits--again, the DNC did NOT purchase them for her. The big ballyhoo about Palin's clothes (and let's not forget about the hair and makeup) is because SHE DID NOT PURCHASE ANY OF THEM HERSELF!!!! Just another fine example of the Republicans double standards.
Posted by: Janstress | October 27, 2008 11:49 AM
Obama buys his own suits, Biden buys his own suits.
End of discussion on Obama.
Posted by: Rick Cain | October 27, 2008 11:50 AM
That's nonsense Deborah. Nobody has spent $ 150,000 of donor money on clothes in the Democratic side, and I seem to remember quite a bit of brouhaha over Edward's haircuts. The point is pretending to be Jane six pack and going on a wild spree as soon as being nominated. Of course Sarah did not make the decision but she certainly had the choice to put her foot down.
Posted by: Subhash Durlabhji | October 27, 2008 11:53 AM
"Why is it that it is only the wardrobes of FEMALE candidates that are ever commented on?"
I think in this case it was the fact that Palin didn't buy her own clothes. And frankly, after all the flap about Bill Clinton's $200 haircut and Edwards' $400 haircut, sexism is not at play here.
Posted by: ann | October 27, 2008 11:54 AM
People are talking because Palin is putting herself out there to be the average mom, just like you. Don't talk the talk if you aren't walking the walk. She is a fake. And I don't want a hockey mom for VP. If I'm going to the doctor I want the best doctor, with the best education and credentials. I don't want the doctor that's an average person I'd like to have a beer with. And I want no less from my President or VP.
Posted by: EM | October 27, 2008 11:55 AM
Also, for Deborah, not only did the RNC purchase these clothes (not the candidate), but remember the flap over John Edwards' $400 haircuts being charged to his campaign? He admitted that was a mistake.
Besides the clothing, something like $11,000 a week is being spent on MAKEUP for Palin. Someone contributed that money hoping it would help get Republicans elected. The same thing is wrong with that as with the $400 haircuts. $150,000 would have bought a lot of advertising time.
It isn't necessarily just Palin who shows bad judgment here--she may not even have known what the clothes cost.
Posted by: dnfree | October 27, 2008 11:56 AM
In response to Deborah:
It is because the other candidates pay for their own clothing. John McCain railed against spending campaign money on clothing for the candidates when he "championed" campaign finance reform. It should also be noted that his entire "reformer" image is in response to the Keating Five scandal and his own desire to clean up his name and remain in politics.
Posted by: Marcus | October 27, 2008 11:56 AM
This is classic swing response. Palin doesn't shop at a consignment shop. What a load of lies. If her lips are moving she is lying. Amazing.

Just remember, the same jerks who recommended spending $150,000 campaign dollars on Palin's clothes would also be the same jerks who would be advising a President McCain. We've had enough stupid advisers in the last 8 years. We don't need any more.

I will be glad when this election is over and I dont have to read more about all of the crap shoveled out by the McCain/Palin "straight talk express." Somewhere along the line the express took a HUGE wrong turn. Americans are smarter than this!
Posted by: RJinchi | October 27, 2008 12:10 PM
I suppose if she were a millionaire like Barack she could afford to buy her own $1,800 suites like Obama does. Here's the only real person in this entire process and she's getting the hell kicked out of her because her party decided to dress her up to the tune of $150,000. Big deal. Obama raised $150,000,000 dollars in the month of September and broke a fundamental campaign promise in the process. He gets a pass. Does anybody care how he's going to pay that back? To quote Hannibal Lecter: "Quid pro quo, Clarice".
Posted by: John | October 27, 2008 12:14 PM
Sarah Palin the Maverick Reformer -- not.
John McCain says she and Todd "aren't rich" and "live frugally" in an effort to explain why this particular candidate (the only one in the field) needs campaign funds for dress/hair/make-up.
Well, anyone can live frugally and still dress well when they're worth about $1.2 million.
Unfortunately, it's more of the same we've lived with for the past 8 years. Ms. Palin: You can keep your stinking bridge to nowhere. Thanks, but no thanks.
Posted by: karenann | October 27, 2008 12:15 PM
I agree with Gov. Palin. The wardrobe controversy is so ridiculous. It's just another distraction most likely created by the Palin/McCain team to distract us from all the other stuff that's wrong with her that are actually important.
Posted by: Jeff | October 27, 2008 12:19 PM
Ruth - "This is your future Savior Repubs?" -
The future of the Repub party is Sarah Palin? The same person who lies about being against the "bridge to nowhere", troopergate, train-wrecked with Katie Couric, collects a Per-Diem for living AT HOME, ships her kids on Alaska's dime, and now lies about getting jeans on consignment? Maybe Alaskans and Evangelicals are sheepish enough to buy this empty suit. If Repbus are serious, the will ship her home after the election loss and take a long hard look at what they truly want to be.
Posted by: karl | October 27, 2008 12:21 PM
How does she explain $25,000 for hair & makeup? That's a lot of hairspray & lipstick for the pitbull.
Posted by: Liz B | October 27, 2008 12:26 PM
Palin is no spendthrift and no clothes horse. Outsiders like me don't understand why the the McCain campaign was trying to let her take the hit here when it was someone else's bungling.
But we can see Palin doesn't subscribe to the "if they throw you under the bus, lie there" philosophy.
She came out swinging. She has the true politician's instinct and she is correct to stand up for herself.
But please, Sarah, don't forget that John McCain chose you as his running mate for which you should be honored and grateful. He deserves your loyalty and support.
Posted by: Rita | October 27, 2008 12:28 PM
I love Sarah Palin. She makes me laugh during these difficult times. It's too late for her, John McCain and The Republican Party to save themselves from the embarassment. I bet at this point, McCain regrets making her his running mate.
Posted by: Age | October 27, 2008 12:29 PM
(1) Don't worry, Palin will soon have her own book deal so that she can have a few million in the bank like Obama;
(2) Obama's wardrobe has been covered already, by the Tribune no less. He owns a few American-made $1,500 suits, proving that you can look "Presidential" for less than $150,000.
Posted by: Matt | October 27, 2008 12:31 PM
The reason why her wardrobe was made an issue is because she was so darn adamant that she is just a regular person, hanging out with the Joe's. This was obvious as was talking about how simple she is, at the RNC, while wearing $400+ eyeglasses.
I agree that the wardrobe shouldn't be made an issue. People in her position should be wearing nice clothes. But, she swore up and down that she's different from everyone in D.C. All she's done is prove that she's more and more a typical politician.
Posted by: chgolil | October 27, 2008 12:33 PM
Sarah Palin can wear any clothes she wants. It isn't going to make her any smarter or more prepared to be vice president of the United States. I think anyone voting for this Republican ticket is making a very, very big mistake. Sara Palin is simply unprepared and totally inexperienced for the job.
Posted by: Mark J | October 27, 2008 12:34 PM
Thank god we're sticking to the issues. The fact that papers report on this and that you people care about it is ridiculous. There are so many other reasons to be worried about Palin taking office that the GOP is probably embracing the wardrobe "scandal" to divert attention from them.
Posted by: Vaughan Johnson | October 27, 2008 12:39 PM
Did the DNC buy any clothes for their candidates, spouses, families, or provide any stylists, coaches, or other ensemble cast support?
Hard to tell, since the media is obsessed with Palin's wardrobe, and they won't report anything like this about the dems.
Who pays for BO's clothes? Who pays for his wife's hairstyle? What about Biden's clothes? What about his support team for his chronic foot-in-mouth problems? We don't hear about any of this in the MSM.

And the Sun-Times had a story a year or two ago about how George W. Bush gets his suits custom made at a cost that starts at $2,000 each, and can actually reach $10,000 per suit. I like Obama's frugality of buying off-the-rack better.
Posted by: BC | October 27, 2008 1:09 PM
You know, I read an interesting article about how most candidates just get the expensive outfits for free and that Clinton's suits were over $6000 a piece (I don't know how many she had)...
So, it's cool if you are in and just get to borrow for free, but bad if you actually pay for it. It's obviously not the expense at issue. So, I hope all your favorite stars actually buy all their ballroom clothes from now on...
Posted by: Wade | October 27, 2008 1:11 PM
WOW! She shops in consignment shops in her local town like any other Maveraick! Next she will prove to be such a Maverick that she will begin to speak off the script to show she is her own person. BUT WAIT! They just reached that part of this sad yet predictable story line! To make a long boring story short, it they did not want the news out, it would not be leaked out. Just another push to create news about nothing to divert attention from the real story that she was picked in an attempt to win a campaign not to be VP. The more people talk about the fact that she shops in regular stores like "Joe Six Pack" or the Plumber the more this becomes the reason to vote for the ticket by those who are not that smart and are easily pursuaded by the sound bites.
Here's a way to think about it. If you are looking for some one to help you develop a business that will be successful beyond your ability do you pick someone you thinks and lives like you, or do you find someone smarter than you that you can talk to and will listen? If you pick the first your business will fail and I will not mention what can happen to a country.

I was for really expensive clothes before I was against it.
Posted by: RomanBconservativesRIP08 | October 27, 2008 1:19 PM
Unless Ms. Palin finds a jacket that can answer interview questions, shoes that will advise her on ethics, and a skirt with a degree in economics, I could care less what she wears. She isn't qualified to be VP.

And who said the Obama campaign wasn't negative, snide and hateful? Oh, I guess the Obama cult follower's are the negative, snide and hateful people not Obama himself?
Ya'll show how wonderful you are with your comments about Palin as if she's gonna come snatch up your kids and eat'em if elected.
And hey Fitz, you're the worst of them all when it comes to your "bring them home" rants. Your guy Obama will keep them in Afghanistan and Pakistan for years to come looking for Osama. Hey what's another 10,000 troops to Barry?
Posted by: Springfield | October 27, 2008 1:44 PM
Sarah Palin's wardrobe both is and is not a relevant issue. It is relevant because the GOP claims to be so down-home yet show me a regular "down-home" American woman who can afford the clothes the GOP bought for Palin.
It's a non-issue because of course a candidate needs to dress well, have their hair done etc.
The amount of money stands out during this period of economic decline, and that bugs people.
Bottom line though...the real issues are about war and peace, the environment, democracy, healing a divided USA (thank you GOP for your divisive politics of the last 8...no 20...no 40 years) and becoming once again a cooperative member of the international community.

What’s frugal to some is extravagant to others. This is Mrs. Palin’s favorite consignment shop: http://www.outoftheclosetalaska.com
Posted by: EvilPoet | October 27, 2008 1:50 PM
Nobody really would care about the cost of her outfit if she wasn't trying to portray herself as an average Jane. Average Janes don't get to wear a years salary worth of cloth. Yeah, she needs to dress appropriately but couldn't she do that for a few grand? It's just part of her problem with using other people's money to supplement her lavish lifestyle of flying all over the country with her family or staying at home and charging the gov't for perdium while she's in her own house. She a phony and an abuser of gov't money.
Posted by: Wink | October 27, 2008 1:53 PM
Of course Michelle Obama can afford to pay for her own clothes, she got a nearly 300% pay increase (from $122,000 to $316,000) two months after Barack became a US Senator. Let's not forget the $300,000 that the Obama's "saved" on their Hyde Park home by buying it at the same time that Tony Rezko bought the adjacent property at full asking price.

Posted by: iloveclothes | October 27, 2008 2:03 PM
Doesn't matter how much Obama and Biden's suits cost, they bought them with their own money.....Hello
So after spending that much on Palin, now she won't wear them? That's a triple waste. Lies, wasting, spin, looking forward to the end of the BS

So if it wasn't a big deal that she was wearing a designer wardrobe, why is it now important to make a point that she is "back" to her Thrift Shop clothes? Sounds a lot like a child trying to backtrack on their story. And notice, SHE is the one pointing it out.
Posted by: lynn | October 27, 2008 2:25 PM
Well I will say this ... I agree with EM! I want a truly qualified person to be not only president but vice president! Now let's imagine that if McCain wins and something happens to him where he can't lead and Palin has to step in ... Do we really truly want a soccer mom running the country? Not only that but she has never been outside the country except on her big Mexican cruise! In my opinion that does not qualify her as an expert on foreign policy! Oh unless you count her peeping in on the Russians across the Alaskan border! ... As for the clothes ... how many soccer moms can afford $150k worth of Neiman Marcus and Saks during these hard economic times? In keeping with her pig in lipstick philosophy, I say you can put a Neiman Marcus dress on a box of rocks ... but under the dress it's still just a box of rocks!

The best article of clothing to help Sarah Palin would be an orange parka with a hood that could be pulled tight around her face, so one can hear what she's saying... a la Kenny from South Park.
That would help her campaign waaaaay more than any fancy suit.

This is all a bunch of C_ _p. In the referenced appearence Palin also stated she "took back the clothes the Republican Party had purchased". Well we all know that Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales are going to "take back" clothes that she wore repeatly all over the country. They don't like to take things back after they've been worn once.
Still doesn't make her anywhere near qualified to be V.P. There are more people in the county in Florida that I reside than the entire state of Alaska. To me it's a no brainer.

Palin says she’s one of us, and McCain says she and Todd are poor. I guess by McCain's standards they are. After all, he dumped his wife for a rich beer heiress, owns eight homes, you know the rest. Good Christian teachings. Unfortunately I don’t think the Palin’s salary of over $200,000 each year, a $500,000 home and a net worth $1.2 million qualifies her for food stamps let alone shopping at a consignment store. Deborah, the other candidates have been wearing their own clothes, purchased with their own money. I make less than half their salary, my home is worth a fraction of theirs and our net worth isn’t even close to theirs, and guess what…my wife and I have six girls (none of which got pregnant). How can Palin even come close to telling me how to live my life? Face it…Palin is not your everyday run of the mill hockey mom. McCain are soooo out of touch if he really thinks this is considered poor. And you fellow Republican’s really can’t see this? Man…sheep to slaughter.

Let me understand this correctly. The self-proclaimed maverick and hockey mom, Governor Sarah Palin accepted her party-financed $150,000 wardrobe and is now wearing her old clothes from a consignment shop in Alaska. She dismissed the $150,000 controversy as "ridiculous.” So, my question is, if the controversy was so ridiculous, then, why did she discontinue the fashion show? So, who is the real Sarah Palin, anyway?
