Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, says in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network airing today that she supports a federal constitutional ban against gay marriage - which Sen. John McCain, the GOP's presidential nominee, does not support.

Palin, who had voted in 1998 for a state amendment banning same sex marriage, says: "I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that's where we would go. I don't support gay marriage,"

McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, is supporting a ballot initiative in his home state this fall banning gay marriage there. But McCain consistently has opposed a federal marriage amendment, contending that it would usurp the authority of the states on such questions.

If there could be a clearer measure of Palin's appeal to the conservative base of the Republican Party, it would be hard to find. It is that appeal which McCain has counted on in his campaign for the presidency with Palin by his side.

Yet Palin is not cut and dried on the question of gay rights. As governor of Alaska, Palin vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to partners of gay state employees. In a debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden, Palin said she is "tolerant" of gays and supports legal protections for same-sex couples such as hospital vistation rights.

But then, back to the base: The Christian Broadcasting Network plans to broadcast the interview today in which Paln also claims that religion and God have been "mocked" in this campaign.

"Faith in God in general has been mocked through this campaign,'' Palin says in the interview, "and that breaks my heart and that is unfair for others who share a faith in God and choose to worship our Lord in whatever private manner that they deem fit.''

This is all too good to be true.
The velvet glove falls from the iron fist.

"and that breaks my heart and that is unfair for others who share a faith in God and choose to worship our Lord in whatever private manner that they deem fit.''

whatever private manner? Are you kidding? Gays, Terry Shiavo, abortion, What "private" manner are you talking about? Why would they "mock" this? Would it be that they find the religious the biggest hypocrites? Hey I'm a born again...and again....and again.....and again.....

I love all my gay friends but marriage is not something they need to be pushing.Civil unions, contracts of love, or make up a new name that will bind them together for life and give them the rights that the traditional married couple has..I do believe that a couple together should be able to will their money etc. to the other without worry. However even in a man woman marriage the spouse isn't protected. Anyone can contest a will if they wish to do so...Marriage is over rated for the most part...When it comes to being able to stay with a loved one in the hospital or getting the social security of your deseased love one then it's more of a government thing...I belive all gays should have rights for one another but to have a church wedding is nothing more than an exibition...

Sarah Palin can complain about how Christians are unfairly treated when some ignorant, intolerant, politician fights for a federal consitutional amendment banning consenting adult Christians from have the full legal protections of marriage that every other American can get. Until then she should keep her hypocritical mouth shut.

I thought this ticket was 'federalists". I guess I was wrong. Let government control everything sounds like socialism.

Just the next step in the GOP process to win this election:

Obama's inexperience?? Did not work

Nominate Sarah Palin to get the Hillary vote?? Did not work.

Reverend Wright?? Did not work

Bill Ayres?? Did not work

Call Obama a Socialist?? Did not work

Wait - let's send Sarah Palin out to pander to the religious base!! Now THAT one should work!!!!!

Now it is reported that McCain is pulling out of 3 more states. It's beginning to look more and more like this race will be decided by 7:30 on the 4th.

Can you say Socialist??..She is dangerous..Trust me. She will be for overturning Roe v.Wade also..She is nothing but a fanatic...Her way or no way. This is not the kind of thinking we need in the WH..

"Faith in God in general has been mocked through this campaign,'' Palin says in the interview, "and that breaks my heart and that is unfair for others who share a faith in God and choose to worship our Lord in whatever private manner that they deem fit.''

Except of course for Brack Obama. His faith should be talked about as much as possible, and his pastor's views should be a huge issue in the campaign. She's only talking about the right kind of Christians being protected, her kind. The others should be attacked and vilified.

What an amazing hypoctite Palin is. Simply amazing.

Samantha -- no one is saying anything about a "church wedding." They just want to have the right to be legally wed. Period. Whether or not you are married in a church is up to that church. Some won't accept someone from another religion. That's their call. But the right to stand up in front of a legal body and be legally recognized as a committed and married couple with all rights granted is what all humans should have. There shouldn't be anything religious or exclusionary about it.

All humans should have the right to be legally bound to another.

"I belive all gays should have rights for one another but to have a church wedding is nothing more than an exibition..."

So, you won't be having a church wedding either, right? After all, it's just an exibition (sic), right? And you think that churches should just stop marrying people - gay or straight - because it's just an exhibition, right?

I absolutely love this woman.

People are really throwing around the term 'socialist' pretty loosely.
Palin is more of a 'clerical fascist'.
Heck, I support many socialist ideas;
National Parks
Social Security
National Health Ins.
Equal protection under the law.

It's like these people don't understand what is and isn't constitutional. It's our constitutional right to have equality and freedom. Yet we don't view gays or minorities as equal and don't believe they deserve freedoms. I don't know how many times theologists and historians have pointed out the bible does not say anything about being gay is a sin. It's not. It's not even in the bible. Just because one passage got misinterpreted our entire country wants to take away the rights of part of our society just because of their sexual preference.

This is enough. This is no longer about right or wrong, it's about power and forcing your will on the people. People like this are dangerous, people like this start wars. People like this turn create chaos, hate, and destabilization. Hitler thought he was doing what was best for his country too you know. Or does Palin not believe in that either.

You know, I used to be a big Christian until I read the bible with no one “interpreting” it in my ear for me. Palin and the repugs are only socialists when it benefits themselves. I sure wish Palin would start using some of those Christian values that she claims to have……

Gay marriage is a rights issue. I do not enjoy telling the hospital I am my partner's brother to make sure I can get back to see him. I do not enjoy having to explain him as an additional parent while he attends our son's school functions. I do not understand why my son who has medical conditions should not be allowed to be on my partner's medical plan. There are more issues that the sanctity of marriage. I do think I should be entitled to my partner's possessions when he passes. I do think that he should be able to plan my funeral. There are so many issues relating to gay marriage. It is not cut and dry, black and white. Marriage is an institution of exclusion. Marriage used to be one white man and one white woman in this country. Misunderstood, blacks were not allowed to move past their immoral, unmarried lives. We, gay Americans feel the same way. We deserve the right to love who we want to love. The Government once told blacks that they could not love one another, then they said that blacks could not love whites. Who is the watchdog from the ivory tower that says two women can not love one another or two men? If someone can present a word that can give gay people the same rights as married couples, what is that word???? It is definitely not contract, partner, friend, civil union, or any others I have heard. Marriage has special rights, gay people do not want to infringe on the word, we want the rights. Sarah Palin, a family is a group of people that love one another that work as a family unit. I am not concerned about the sex of the people who are married next door, why should you be? If you were in my shoes, the issue would be different. As a gay white man, I know how it feels to be a minority, with no legal protections against hate crimes, mistreatment, not being allowed to marry, and treated as a second class citizen. A gay person is a minority, deemed that the majority is straight. Therefore gay marriage is a civil rights issue. Marriage is a human institution that was not founded by God. God did not create marriage, man did. Man gave it special rights attached to it. Families consist of more than a man a woman and children. Sometimes it is grandma and daughter and child. Sometimes it is dad and dad and child(ren). It bewilders me to think that at a time whent he economy is in the trash can. One of the leading causes of divorce is not the focus of Mrs. Palin. Palin, we are losing money, honey. Our children need this money. Stay out of the gay issues and focus on what you are going to do if you make it to the white house and please do not write hate and bigotry into our constitution. From this article you are sounding a bit like Hitler.
