Sarah Palin's wink, Barack Obama's ad: The Swamp
The Swamp
Chicago Tribune

With a wink from the opposition, Obama takes a nod to a big issue.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

It's a measure of what single issue Barack Obama believes will motivate voters in the presidential election, and which single person might help tip it his way:

Obama, who will dominate 30 minutes of prime-time television tonight, also is airing a campaign ad with only eight spoken words in it: "I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message.''

It is the words of Republican rival John McCain that dominate the ad - appearing on the screen as scrolling quotes of the GOP's nominee for president, and how little he knows about economics.

"I might have to rely on a vice president that I select for expertise on economic issues,'' McCain is quoted as saying.

It closes with his choice:

Sarah Palin, winking.

I believe this add...or issue, highlights the mistake of McBush. His very first chance to show good judgment, he chooses Palin. It has become quite obvious this was a directive from the religious right. McBush folded like a pancake to its pressure. Lets hope the fiscal conservatives take back the party from the thumpers.

McCain chosing Palin for (wink, wink) economic advice? Brilliant! Hey, how's that Neiman-Marcus stimulus package she recommended working for you John?

Yeah, and Saral Palin can sing "I'm So Pretty" like Natalie Wood in West Side Story. ..................

Yes, I agree with the above posters that this is brilliant! I like the simplicity of it, with no shouting, and it comes of very classy, unlike the Falin/ Mcbush commercials. For the Repugs out there: This is how you air an issue-based ad that draws the differences without smearing. A big difference.

I like it, but people who can read are already voting for Obama - so I don't think it's so good.

A video clip of McCain's "rely on VP for econ stuff" quote would have been superior. Anyway, VOTE for BARACK

Yeah, and Saral Palin can sing "I'm So Pretty" like Natalie Wood in West Side Story. ..................

Perhaps more appropriate than you realize, Ohg. Natalie Wood didn't sing in "West Side Story" -- her voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Just stood there, with her mouth a-flappin' while somebody else's voice came out......

So Sarah Palin really CAN sing just like Natalie Wood in "West Side Story." JUST like her.

Of all the political ads aired by Obama thusfar, I think this is the best one. Sarah Palin has more ethics investigations going than any Chicago politician I can think of at the moment! I wouldn't trust her with any type of authority.

Amazing. McBush is headed for a major defeat and he can thank his pick of the dumbest person ever to be his VP. It isn't that she is a woman, it is that she is stupid. Following the stupidity of Bush and picking the stupidity of Palin doesn't look good for the old man.

I am a moderate, sometimes considered as an Independent. Over the years, I read the National Review and listen to William F. Buckley. I also read Gore Vidal and other writers in the New Republic. I considered both opinions in synthesizing my own, personal political conclusions. I am sad today when the conservative position is based upon McCain and Palin. McCain was a pilot. When I was out in the boondocks of Vietnam, we loved the fighter-bomber pilots. When I spent time at Saigon-Tan Son Nhut Air Base, learned that those pilots were out of touch with the war when they were on the ground. I do not think that his egocentric tactics of cut, turn, swerve, dive, and avoid being a target for a nanosecond, is what we need in a President at the present time. There is no long term political strategy. It is only to dodge the missiles of the opposition at the moment.

Well, two can play that game.... McCain could make an even more damning video of Obama. When asked by an interviewer, "Why have you ruled that out - running nationally?" back in November, 2004 he responded, "I am a believer in knowing what you are doing when you apply for a job. And, I think that, if I were to seriously consider running on a national ticket, I would essentially have to start now, before having served a day in the Senate. Now there are some people who might be comfortable doing that, but I'm not one of those people."

Republicans think this is negative. It is actually charity, by putting McCain's words and his VP pick's picture in paid advertisement Obama is reducing McCain's deficit in available money. It didn't help his deficit in ideas or advisers.

My man Axlerod does it again. Um Um Um. See how effective the truth is. Masterpiece.

This ad, just makes me like Sarah Palin all the more. She looks real, like a real person and not a politician. she was talking to America there, and wow I think that was a bad choice for an ad. I mean I'm for Obama, but what was he thinking with this ad? Especially when you consider she knows about the economy and has the record to prove it. I have thought most of his ads were pretty brilliant, but dunno that could be a bad move. I thought she did well in the debate, and kinda shook Joe up. Again, I'm not sure this was a very smart move by the Obama camp. Palin has a lot of fans out there, even more than McCain, and this will just rile them up all the more.

these comments about Palin being "real" and "just like us" are naive. A national leader needs to be someone who can "see the whole board" -- a deep thinker who looks ahead to cause and effect -- unlike what we did in Iraq. We have had 8 years of the "gonna pray on it and I'm sure it will be OK" administration. hasn't worked.

Ah yes, the great Obama, Messiah and Re-Distributor of Wealth.

democrats, we - Heartburn, Terri, the smart John, Jeff, Teresa, spent a good part of the summer trying to help all of you try to understand Economics 101 - Supply and Demand, with no discernable success. Many of you still seem to think that this neophyte community activist socialist knows something about economics. So quaint, and yet not especially surprising. "Call me if you need me", I seem to recall was his rational and inspirational response. Is this going to be, in any way, better than baseball, tonight, even in the cold? I think not, but when the great Obama speaks, the Obama minions, totally overwhelmed by
Economics and by Energy production as they always are, just have to get some salivate time in. Well, all heil the mighty Obama. U will be much better off watching da Phillies.

"Palin has a lot of fans out there, even more than McCain, and this will just rile them up all the more"

Palin fans are brain dead social conservatives, not like they would ever vote Democratic, so who cares?

Oh and Django S? It's a pleasure to hear your whining ignorant post, it means you know we are winning.

Komrade Bill,
Hope that you will have a few moments to stop by a drug store and get yourself a bib, before the indoctrination program begins. Watch da Phillies AND Save some laundry.

Call me if you need me.

It would be sexist not to attack Palin. Every politician gets attacked. Palin should get special treatment? Women everywhere would say no. Palin's in the political arena now, so she's going to be lambasted (and there's so much to lambast). Besides, Palin loves to attack. What's good for the goose...

Look guys I'm serious this ad actually looks Sarah Palin look better than you may think. Just because we are all for Obama doesn't mean we can't see this through clear glass. It presents palin's charm, what America loves about her. I guarantee you that more than just republicans think she is accessible. She is an appealing person, weather or not she is qualified is up to speculation. But this ad, just puts that "everyday American" thought in everyone's mind. I think it's a bad move, I think he needs to remove it, and just leave the ad without Palin. Leave her out of the equation that way the media is not focused on more bashing of Sarah but the fact that McCain is not qualified. Because guys if you go through her record like I have done, and I hate to say this (but I feel I can because I'm among friends) she's probably more qualified with economics and not only that but Homeland security. she has the highest security ranking of any governor or senator running for this election. If they start really bringing up her qualifications instead of just playing it cool for the next week, they may be in trouble. Seriously!

funny: how a campaign is run can often indicate how the candidate will run the presidency. McCain supporters seem to be spending a lot of time telling us how THEY'd do it. (which is usually better than how McCain's DOING it.) Is that how u wanna spend the next 4 years?

we - Heartburn, Terri, the smart John, Jeff, Teresa, spent a good part of the summer trying to help all of you try to understand Economics 101 - Supply and Demand, with no discernable success.

Hey, we agree on something! Notice that gas prices have been plummeting lately? Yeah, good ol' supply and demand. Now, maybe if we invest heavily in clean fuels, demand (and gas prices) will stay down. Now that we have that settled, let's vote for the candidate who will keep energy prices down by keeping demand down...that being Obama

This is the "mushroom cloud" ad of the 2008 campaign, great, highly-effective and perfectly legitimate. We're talking about the person who is next in line to be President of the United States, and Sarah Palin must be judged on her qualifications for that job just like any other candidate, male or female. Ads like this are no more sexist than legitimate criticism of Barack Obama is racist. Palin herself is largely responsible for plunging the election campaign to the low level we see today. When I see and hear the ugly attacks and ridiculous insinuations leveled by Palin herself, I say she deserves to be answered in kind. If anything this ad is directed at John McCain's judgment and lets Palin off easy.

Ok, this ad is symbolic in nature. Questioning judgement and playing with one's perception of the good vs. the bad. Sarah Palin has attained substance through all of this. Many republicans can view this ad a positive for her, and democrats can perceive this ad a one up on McCain. Although I don't see this ad as positive or negative for either side, but an ad that questions one's perception in thinking about the candidates. Personally, I think Sarah Palin is NOT ready for the white house, JUST YET! I believe she can become a great stateswoman in the future. With more understanding and knowledge of broader worldly issues and a better run campaign, I see she will inspire and create a culture of Palin supporters. For now, m vote is for Obama,. It is my perception that Obama has the right direction, ideas, and demeanor to make our county great again!

Beautiful ad. Should have been run weeks ago..this is the kind of thing that speaks to borderline voters.

Palin phreaks...of course you think she looks good. To the rest of us, winking during a VP debate is just ... juvenile and embarrasing.

That's a great ad.

I wonder if anybody now would call these gentlemen socialists (or any other nasty, childish name they can come up with)?:

Presidents and top bracket highest tax rate during their terms

FDR 94%
Harry Truman 92%
Eisenhower 92%
JFK 91%
LBJ 77%
Nixon 71.75%
Ford 70%
Carter 70%
Clinton 39.6%

Just wondering

Competence is the message I get from this. They are capable of messaging effectively and clearly without smearing and lying.

Yes, this does make Sarah Palin look cute and endearing in a way that has worked for her. But so what? The point is...cute and endearing are not qualifications for VP of the United States Of America. What she knows about economics (or anything for that matter) is wildly insufficient. Doesn't make her a bad person. Just makes her unqualified. And that's the Obama message.

To Django1: Why is it so many McCain supporters feel the need to speak down to Obama supporters as if Republicans have cornered the market on intelligence? Many people consider people like Warren Buffet, Eric Schmidt, & Arthur Blank reasonably smart people. I think it's fair to say that they and an extensive list of tier 1 performers that reads like the who's who of American business seem to understand economics 101. Strange they still support Obama. Get rid of the hate in your heart and let's talk like real brothers yearning to understand each other.

ok, I'm a woman and a registered independent, my mind is not made up about all the mess I'm seeing in the news and am a bit overwhelmed by the mass amount of media coverage but, it is clear that men like palin for the same reasons they like Betty Boop. i question her sense of understanding for "all people", is anyone concerned with what is happening in her home state? should it not have an effect on how real she is? if i have an issue with a family member i have to address it myself not run-tell my hubby to do my dirty work for me. the dirty work of politicians is most often done by them, but in this case she sent her husband to do most of the hounding for her. so when issues relating to the security of this land becomes a major reality, and with all the mistakes made with the present but soon to be past administration - they will, will she do the fighting or have her proxy VP do it for her. cant she fight her own battles and not depend on her man. Sarah Palin is not above the careful eye of the People just because she is a woman.. give her the same harsh test the men get, and when she fails, like in her interviews..... ok....enough said.

I would have to agree with those who lament how we have lowered our standards in those we elect. I think Newsweek said it best "The prospects of a Palin administration are far more frightening. Ask yourself: how has "elitism" become a bad word in American politics? There is simply no other walk of life in which extraordinary talent and rigorous training are denigrated. We want elite pilots to fly our planes, elite troops to undertake our most critical missions, elite athletes to represent us in competition and elite scientists to devote the most productive years of their lives to curing our diseases. And yet, when it comes time to vest people with even greater responsibilities, we consider it a virtue to shun any and all standards of excellence. When it comes to choosing the people whose thoughts and actions will decide the fates of millions, then we suddenly want someone just like us, someone fit to have a beer with, someone down-to-earth—in fact, almost anyone, provided that he or she doesn't seem too intelligent or well educated."
Case in point, her recent dig at a 'useless' earmark on using fruit flies. Her remarks quickly drew criticism as fruit fly research has managed to boost autism research and revolutionize the study of birth defects. The discovery, made in Drosophila fruit flies may lead to advances in understanding autism spectrum disorders, as recently, human neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism. Never mind that this was a 2007 study, but anyone with a high school education should remember reading about other genetic breakthroughs based on the study of fruit flies. Folks, we already had someone in the white house who lacks intelligence and intellectual curiosity and look where it has gotten us. I just find it sad that those to come to defense primarily rely on things like “I can relate to her”, “she seems folksy”, “She’s qualified because she served on the PTA (I’m not joking, one of those ladies on The View made that statement), “She’s a mom (yes, someone actually made that comment on CNN)”, “because she’s someone I feel I can sit down and have snacks with (yes, another insightful thought from a Palin supporter on CNN). I have no doubt that McCain/Palin will lose this election. What bothers me is all the talk about how Palin will be leading the Repub party for 2012. This is a complete joke!

This is the type of political ads that need to be aired, instead of the usual rhetoric that attempt to convey factual information, but instead provide spurious evidence to support their parties claims. Barack Obama is a uniter of people. Don't believe me, trust your own eyes as you gaze upon the mixture of the masses as he speaks at rallies around our great country. I have respect for John McCain, but not for the McCain/Palin ticket. Enough of the negative vibe in political discussions, where our collective thoughts are viewed with contempt or worse yet, unpatriotic.

"Folded like a pancake"? How on earth do you fold a pancake?

There are only a few days until the next election. It happens Tuesday, November 4th. This is easily the most important election in living memory. However, I never have put much stock into the “political polls,” which are taken as fact by the major news outlets. The reason is that you never know just how those polls’ results are derived. If you have 2/3 of a sample (that’s what the group that is questioned for their opinions is called, a sample) saying that they, per se, intend to vote for Obama instead of McCain, you don’t know what you’re really hearing. The entire population of the United States of America, including all expatriates still retaining citizenship, along with citizens of the territories, has not and couldn’t possibly be sampled. What the 2/3 of the sample means is that 2/3 of the sampled population intends to vote for Obama. The sample could be almost anything; they don’t include the sampling data along with their poll results, so you don’t know just who or what may have contributed to that large of a skew in the data. Don’t let the media cast your vote for you; vote however you think is best.

Since when does Sarah Palin understand the economy? A wink, what is she a pinup girl for poor American politics?
