The Swamp

Just a few days after a historic presidential election that played out against a backdrop of deep dissatisfaction with the way things are going in America, President-elect Barack Obama has gained several points in the public's image of the Democrat who won the election.

On election eve, the Gallup Poll reports, Obama's favorable rating among voters surveyed stood at 61 percent. In the latest results of daily tracking polls that Gallup will continue throughout the transition to the Obama administration and then into the 44th president's first term, Obama's favorable rating stands at 70 percent - his unfavorable rating at 22 percent.

And the fever of dissatisfaction in the nation has cooled jut slightly - down from 86 to 81 percent. No time to call off the ice packs, however.

We're wondering about the causes here: Realization that the next administration knows Africa is a continent? Rahm Emanuel's hiring as chief of staff? Obama's search for a pound puppy, a "mutt" like him? Fact that the campaign is finished?

Whatever the causes, Gallup explains: "To help better understand Americans' continuing reactions to Obama's historic election win, and his actions between now and his inauguration on Jan. 20, Gallup Daily will be tracking:

-- Satisfaction with the way things are going in the United States. As of Election Eve, just 13 percent of Americans were satisfied and 86 percent were dissatisfied. In the latest daily tracking results, the measure is 14 percent satisfied, 81 percent dissatisfied.

-- Favorability of president-elect Obama and vice president-elect Joe Biden, which as of Election Eve were 61% and 52%, respectively. In the latest track, Obama's favorable rating stands at 70 percent.

-- Americans' forward-looking optimism about what the new administration will be able to accomplish once it takes office.

-- Job approval of President Bush in the last two months of his administration and job approval for President Obama beginning Jan. 20, 2009. Bush's score stood at 28 percent approval in the latest track, which is a few notches better than the 24 percent low he hit before Election Day.

Well, that was certainly highly unnecessarily snarky, wasn't it? We are certainly so much better than the moose hunter from Alaska, aren't we? You certainly think so, despite all the stories now leaking that Palin did indeed know the magic question you cite -- kind of like we assume Obama DOES know there are 50 states, not 57.

On the other hand, our next administration doesn't know that FDR didn't conduct his fireside chats via television, and that, in any case, FDR wasn't president whenever it was Biden said it was.

But that's OK, isn't it? It's just Joe being ole, insider, everybody-loves-him-especially insider-journalists-Joe! We wouldn't want to call on him to lead the country or anything.

You did it! You Did it!!

People, you were MAGNIFICENT! FANTASTIC! As I said before, I am Soooooooo PROUD! of you. And Sooooooo PROUD! to be one of you. My pride in all of you is OVERWHELMING! You took on the longest, toughest, most bruising campaign EPIC! in American history. Then you repeatedly stepped up to the plate to do your duty for each other, and for the greater good of the World. :-)

In spite of the extremely serious conditions confronting us, I can barely keep my feet on the ground from the euphoria I feel over how heroically you all stepped forward for each other, your country, and the greater good of the World. You are a great people.

Some of you repeatedly stood in voting lines for hours determined to cast your vote. Others seemed so determined to vote they looked like they were on a pick nick, ready to endure whatever it would take to cast their precious votes. It was a BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL! thing to see.

President Obama, and the First Lady Michelle Obama are highly intelligent people, and seem to have their values, and hearts in the right place. It's about the people, and their needs over money and material things in a time of great need. (Papulo Primo) - The People First.

President Obama has been very wise in seeking the advice, and counsel of many of our best experts. All of whom seem genuinely eager, and willing to help however they can. We are all very fortunate to have them.

And we are very fortunate to have continuously had the help, and support of the Worlds people, and their leadership in spite of the highly negative, and hostile relationship they have had to endure from the Bush Cheney administration.

Over the coming days, months, and years ahead we will have much to do. But I know that what ever the challenge is we can handle it, and count on each other. This is America again. And you have made that perfectly clear.

I am Sooooooo PROUD to know you.

God bless you all

The difference is, though, that at the end of the day Joe Biden *does* actually have knowledge of these kinds of things although he screws up occasionally in the heat of a speech. Sarah Palin, when asked in or out of the spotlight still probably wouldn't know the correct answer. To me it isn't a matter of "insider bias" of this particular author but rather there is a striking gap in knowledge and experience between Biden and Palin (Biden being both more knowledgeable in history and experienced in politics). This is not to say that Sarah Palin doesn't have killer political instincts.

I think EVERYONE is glad the election is over - diehard NeoCons will be banging their highchairs and throwing cookies for a while (following Palin's example - who is showing she can dish it out, but not take it). We're finally on a different track - it can't be any worse than it was when Cheney was president - with all the money that was at the top before the meltdown, the economy proved "trickle down" doesn't work. Speculators and energy companies bled the middle class dry.

@fuming: Sore loser. Who's fault is it that the other side chose a runningmate for her ability to shop rather than her qualifications to do the job?

fuming,
Interesting that you vigorously defend Palin's comments, respectably offering evidence that says she does know Africa is a continent, while not extending the same courtesy to "our next administration"--by which I'm assuming you meant only Biden, and not the entire next administration.

I'm guessing after that awkward press conference, his numbers will slide... How funny is the logo "Office of the President Elect"? Priceless.

"Even President Bush has notched out of an all-time slump since the election". So, basically, Bush is now riding on Obama's coattails.

MCCAIN WAS HUMBLE, PALIN WAS CRASS, AND THE OBAMAS HAVE CLASS. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A CLOSER ELECTION IF ROMNEY HAD BEEN THE CANDIDATE. UNFORTUNATLY THE RIGHT WING EVANGILISTS, WHO CAN NOT STAND MORMONS PREVAILED. IF THERE IS A HEAVEN, DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT "BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS" WILL BE THE ONLY ONES ALLOWED THROUGH THE GATES. PRAY (TO WHO EVER YOU BELIEVE IN) FOR OUR NATION, FOR OUR MILITARY, AND OUR PRESIDENT ELECT BARACK OBAMA.

What I find objectionable is the exceedingly snarky, biased tone of the REPORTER in this incident. That crack was completely uncalled for. And -- for all of you joking about Palin not knowing Africa was a continent, if you bother to check, you'll see that people are coming forward -- to be named, no less, to say those remarks were completely out of context and much more along the lines of Obama not knowing we have 50 -- not 57 -- states.

And, for what it's worth -- I did not vote for Palin and McCain. But I am beyond fed up with the bias shown toward Obama during this entire campaign. Reporters are supposed to be objective, not slobbering idiots. (See Washington Post for more.)

Will they love him in after "FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE" as they do now.

I am shocked by the stupidity of the press. They are the ones who are wrong, because Africa is and always will be a country. For you idots who just follow along with all the information you read in the media, those little parts of Africa that are colored different hues are actually territorial compartments drawn up by the colonial powers when they were ruling the nation of Africa. Besdies that, Africa includes a large island called Madagascar, so it couldn;t possibly be a continent in any case. Probably you'd all be a lot smareter if you hadn't spent so much time learning the bogus "science" of evoltution is school -- a curse that Palin will do away with when she is elected President in 2012.

100% media bias translates into favorable poll ratings.

Today's Tribune was so fawning it was embarrassing. I can't even read the Sports section any more without running into an article slobbering about The Chosen One.

Where are the men in white coats?

I suppose Europe is not a continent because it includes the island of Great Britain. Or North America is not a continent because it includes the Florida Keys.

Continents are identified by convention, not by strict geographical criteria.

And Africa contains 53 independent and sovereign countries within it. Look it up if you don't believe it.

As far as evolution...this is not even worth arguing about. I'm sure you're one of those people who are convinced that Adam and Eve had their own pet tyrannosaurus named Squiggy, fetching the morning newspaper for them.

Well, the McCain-Palin supporters are sure unhappy. The best way to deal with them is the same way that the Obama supporters in the South Park parody did. Shout

LOSERS!!!!!

Whinerdice,

We all know you don't read the Sports section.

frank burns,

You're funny.

Hey Frank Burns, I hope Palin also does away with geology and plate tectonics and continental drift. And also anthropology and history, so we won't be fooled into thinking about tribal nations. How about michelle bachman as her running mate! What a ticket! All-female, all wingnut al the time. I can't wait.

After reading Dreams from My Father , I knew that Barack Obama would make a great president. Having been in Memphis in April 1968 during the time of MLK's assassination, I am so grateful that our country finally came togther and elected Barack Obama. I now predict that he will also be one of the great U.S. presidents, compared with FDR, Lincoln, and Kennedy. Indeed, we are blessed to have Barack Obama as the upcoming 44th president of the U.S.

Frank Burns; America really needs more people like you to keep expressing your republican views. They are both insightful, and delightful to read. We need to hear about all of the things that we have learned wrong, and be taught how things really should be. I love how maverick-y it all sounds.

Nope, you can't blame this one on the Republicans. If anything, Frank is the product of one of those excellent public schools that are manned by all the birth-control-pill, popping, ACLU, left-wing NEA types. They are the reason that only 3 out of every 10 Americans can point out Texas or Florida on a map of the contiguous 48 (not 57, heh hen). Dumbing down the education system has always worked in favor of Democrats. It's the reason we have so many drop-outs that join the ranks of the gimme generation. The system, itself, suppresses natural curiosity and makes people dull enough and ignorant enough to not care when the government is violating the Constitution or otherwise getting away with murder. That makes for a good, governable population that likes the idea of being cared for from cradle to grave. And there you have it: Democrat under glass.

BTW - Obama's ratings may be on the rise, but that has a lot to do with the fact that he been inaugurated yet. I mean, how could his ratings go down if he hasn't been given even his first chance to screw something up? This is why stories like this are a waste of bandwidth.

Have to agree with John W. on this, at least "sort of". If Obama screws up on the massive, pervasive, Herculean scale Bush did -- especially if he has as many people telling him he's screwing up as Bush did and, like Bush, did nothing to change -- Obama would deserve the same kind of scorn Bush got rather than praise. It IS too early to think Obama's deserving of praise, although I think "well-wishes" are appropriate.
