Lately, whenever President Bush has stepped out into the Rose Garden to address the nation, the economic meltdown has been foremost on his mind and at the front of his lips.

But today, on the first day of that phenomenon that is President-elect Barack Obama, Bush stepped out to the garden to address the transition already underway - and also acknowledge the historical significance of Obama's election.

"All Americans can be proud of the history that was made yesterday,'' Bush said. "They showed a watching world the vitality of Americas democracy and the strides we have made toward a more perfect union.'' Obama's life story, and his election, are a testament to the fulfillment of the American story, he said.

"Many of our citizens thought they would never live to see that day,'' said Bush, not specifically citing the election of the first African-American president but alluding to it with his words - "especially uplifting for a generation that witnessed the struggle for civil rights with their own eyes.''

The early-retiring and early-rising president didn't get much sleep last night at the White House - he telephoned the Democratic winner at 11 pm EST, and as the election contest was called for Obama a massive crowd assembled in the park and street out front of the White House with people chanting: "Yes, we did.''

"I told the president elect he can count on complete cooperation from my administration as he makes the transition,'' said Bush, who also had called Republican Sen. John McCain, with whom he had waged their own tough contest for the GOP nomination eight years ago. "The American people will always be grateful for the lifetime of service John McCain has devoted to this nation.''

The president also asserted a note of stability in the two and a half month transition of power underway.

"We are embarking on a period of change,'' Bush said, "but some things will not change... the American government will remain vigilant, protecting the American people. I will continue to conduct the people's business, as long as this office remains on my trust... I will keep the ... president in touch....

"It will be a stirring sight to watch President Obama, his wife Michelle and his beautiful girls step through the doors of the White House,'' Bush said, noting how proud Obama's mother and his grandmother, who passed away on the eve of the election, would have been to see the election of their son and grandson.

"Last night, I extended an invitation to the president-elect and Mrs. Obama to come to the White House and Laura and I are looking forward to welcoming them as soon as possible.''

The question that I immediately think of is who will the media find to blame for all of the problems that our country faces when George W. Bush leaves office?
Will the media blame Barack Obama? I doubt it!

Pat H...

But essentially it will still be Bush's fault. He got us in this mess, and now he's leaving someone else to clean it up. No President since FDR has faced a challenge like this. Don't underestimate Obama before he's started. That was the mistake his opponents made, underestimating him, and they lost. Trust me, Obama will get his fair share of criticism, so don't worry about that.

No, Obama will get no criticism from the mainstream media. He certainly got none while on the campaign trail. With his interest in the 'Fairness Doctrine', the last few bastions of conservative voices will be eliminated and no one will dare criticize him.

Remember Repugs,Obama gets a free ride for the first year.

This is based on your assumption that Bushie couldn't be blamed for 9/11,he just got here.

A more perfect union is not a red America or a Blue America. Obama should demonstrate his message by appointing a bi-partisan cabinet. .........

I watched the celebrations on C-SPN last night. It was great to see the citizens party in front of the WH last night.

The key will be the Obama appointments. Podesta and Emanuel are excellent beginnings.

Rahm Emanuel is a partisan hack. If Obama wanted to signal to the country that he is interested in bipartisan cooperation, he could not have muddied his message worse than that.

Oh, and by the way: Kudos to President Bush for being the first "tyrant" in world history to abide by the will of the people and voluntarily agree to leave office, just as is required by the Constitution. Glad to see there were some parts left intact after he and Cheney "shredded" it.

Had only Dr. Martin luther King, Jr. lived long enough to witness these two historic event: Obama's win as America's first African American President, and Republican President George Bush's invitation to his Democratic successor to dine with his family at the White House.

This would surely please a man who sacrificed his life so that this dream would become a reality. I can only say that Dr. King's life was not lived in vain.

Pat H, are you implying that President Elect Obama should be held accountable for the economic mess created by Bush and his Republican Congress?

Why do Republicans think that the media is to blame for things? Did the media invade other countries? Did the media allow corporate American to ship millions of jobs overseas?

Pat H..... seriously!

Just for the record- Bush didnt get us into most of the mess we are in as a country. Clinton peeled back the military and got things in such disarray that it opened the door for 911. The economy was a mess when Bush came into power. Clinton let the dot com era explode and Bush paid for it during his first 4 years. Clinton pushed for easing the restrictions (employment, credit, ability to pay) on lower income folks so they could experience the American dream. Greenspan lowered the rates and shouldve known the lenders were out of control. Iraq is the only bad move on the part of Bush and I bet 10 yrs from now everyone will say that was the right move. Stop getting your opinions from CNN people.

Here we go - remember it used to be all Clinton's fault, now we skip over Bush's eight years - and suddenly it's Obama's.

I love the whining sound comin' from the repugs - music to my ears!!!!

The Left is so funny, except the comedy is actually scary. Scary because they have no sense of reality, facts, history.

In regard to the economy, it is correct that the Clinton administration's easing of credit so the poor can own a house was a large part of the problem we are in today. You throw in the banks and mortgage companies that took advantage of that to make quick, big money and therein lies the problem. Two years ago, Bush and some Republicans tried to overhaul the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mess. The Dems and some Republicans put a stop to that. And, isn't Fannie Mae crook Franklin Reins on the Obama team? Didn't this guy rake in about $100 million over seven years while Fannie Mae floundered?
The economic problems we face are the fault of everyone: Republicans, Democrats, the people, banks. In July Barney Frank said Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were sound. They were not.
These problems also grew more severe in the past two years, marked by the Dems running Congress.
These problems haven't been helped by an energy cost crisis, something the Dems are largely guilty of causing.
As far as jobs going overseas, that was going on long before "W" became president. I suspect it will only get worse under Obama and the Dem Congress as they try to unionize everything.
But no matter what, the media and the Obamabots will never put blame on him or the Democrats regardless of what happens the next few years.

I am from Canada, your nieghbour to the North. I watched with admiration as to how the American public displayed the true sense of what their Constitution and various amendments are intended to achieve. The world was watching and America showed that they are still capable of change and making decisions based on what is needed rather then what is perceived. It will be challenging not just for President Elect Obama, but for all Americans to align themselves and return to what matters, the continued strength and growth of the United States to what was always the goal of it's ancestors and leaders. A shining light of democracy that leads and shows what a nation can do. Remember, if one person is failed by the system, then it has failed. Good Luck to all of you.

Clinton left a huge surplus in the Treasury for Bush to spend as he saw fit. I forget if it was 4 billion or 4 trillion. Now we are 11 trillion in the RED.

You consider $65 a barrel oil an energy cost crisis? Or were the Democrats somehow the cause of Multinational oil companies driving up a temporary price spike in order to generate world record profits?

.
No, Mike, you are mistaken. Clinton did not leave a huge surplus in the treasury. The government was nearly $6 trillion in debt when Clinton left office. That is not a surplus regardless of what is left over from one year's budget. And, in fact, what Clinton left was a budget surplus from one year - which was already spoken for by virtue of then existing budgeting procedures. He also left the idea that the debt would decline if the government continued the fiscal policies of his administration. It never fails to amaze me how long that "budget surplus" myth has stuck around.

Pat H,

You are right. Nothing the great Obama does will be able to "fix" those 8 years of Bush and Cheney. If there is even one Republican anywhere in the mix, then there will be your culprit.

democrats, now that the great Obama has secured a solid victory, we would just like to see what he can do once he is installed in office. We sure have heard a lot of wonderful things about him. Just would like to see him barrel his way into something / anything and deliver that great outcome that all you fine democrats would have us to believe will in fact come about, due to the wisdom not of this world, of this brilliant, electrifying, transformative leader.

democrats, Django is NOT being cynical. I am, after all, living now in Exile. Just anxious to see the magical, powerful, tingly, problem solving - diplomatic ability that this great man will bring to the process. How hard can it be to do better than Resident True Evil George Bush and his running buddy, Dick Darth Vader Cheney?

Surely this is not expecting too much or too much too soon. Provide us with a year, a guideline, a marker, something, anything. ' When this happens, then .....' ???Need a little help, democrats. Anything.

Interesting to see all the Republican sour grapes on this page. Where were your complaints about the media when they bought into Bush's War on Iraq without question? You quickly forget how biased they were in his favor.

Crazy Duck,

"Remember Repugs,Obama gets a free ride for the first year.

This is based on your assumption that Bushie couldn't be blamed for 9/11,he just got here."

I'm glad you have finally seen the light, but just to make sure you are board, please reply the that 9-11 was Bill Clinton's fault and then we will have the rules set straight.

I really have to say all this arguing would be great if we had a time machine to go back in time and fix one thing. However as it is we do not have one so all this bickering will do nothing for this nation at all. Now I did not vote for Obama but I am not Republican and yea I upset that Mccain didn't win but all we can do now is unite and try are best to support our new president and not just try everything in our power to bash every move he makes.

I would like to respond to ElMeanYo: Neither free and responsible conservative nor liberal voices should be eliminated. The former keep the truth safe and the latter remain open to it. Criticism is an important element for decision-making.
