The Swamp

by John McCormick and Rick Pearson

Senior officials with President-elect Barack Obama's transition team said late Thursday that Sen. Hillary Clinton would be an asset to the new administration, but declined to confirm reports she was under consideration for secretary of state.

Aides to Clinton had little to say about the news reports, including including one that said she was in Chicago where Obama is holding daily transition planning meetings. Clinton's office would only say that the New York Democrat and former first lady had no public schedule on Thursday. Her office said any speculation about Cabinet or other administration appointments is for Obama's transition team to address.

"We're not going to discuss any meeting he has about appointments," said Robert Gibbs, a senior Obama aide who is expected to soon be named White House press secretary.

Several other names have been mentioned for the post, including Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

.The Associated Press and NBC both reported Clinton was under consideration for secretary of state; NBC also reported Clinton was in Chicago on Thursday.

Bill Daley, brother of Mayor Richard Daley and a member of Obama's transition team, would not speculate on the reports but noted Obama has great respect for Clinton.

"She's been a great senator, she's obviously a great candidate and she'd be good at anything," Daley told WGN-TV. "I think she's known worldwide, but that's really a decision the president-elect will make.''

Woul help her decrease her campain debt-

She would make an amazing Secretary of State.. no matter what a lot of you Clinton haters say.. the world adores and admires her!!

The choice of HC would be a potential (not certain) disaster. If things turn sour for this administration, there would be Hillary -- the focus of so many people's ire -- as heavy baggage.
.
But he's making a lot of risky (dumb?) choices in that regard. For example the ultimate Chicago Machine patronage army commander Rahm Emmanuel as Chief of Staff; Duh Mare's brudder, Bill Daley is being mentioned as a possible (Transportation, i think?); as is Mob banker Alexi Gianouias (Treasury Secretary... no that's not a joke!); and others.
.
If he peoples his administration with Chicago Machine hacks, he'll be passing out ammunition to Conservatives and Independents. In which case we have to wonder if Obama's rep for being smart and savvy is justified. Or if he's got a gambling problem.

Personally, I think she would make an excellent choice. She is well liked abroad, intelligent, and would probaby get more things done than Rice has.

Go Hillary, Go!

Very funny how the Obama-bots that detested everything about Hillary now think she's a wonderful human being and great public servant. Obama supporters are nothing but kool-aid addled hypocrites.

Bad choice. Hillary's only foreign policy experience that I am aware of was when she bravely dodged that sniper fire. With Obama's own complete lack of diplomatic experience, he needs a SOS that at least has an idea of what they are doing. From the names mentioned above, I think Richardson would be the best choice.

I was going to waste a lot of time telling how rediculous your statement is....but I won't waste yours or my time. I guess the 53% who supported Obama are hypocrites.........the other 46% are just losers.

Bemused and Sarah Palin have a lot in common--and one is that they both need to go home and stay quiet for awhile, so as to not seem so foolish.

There is a historical precedent here. Abraham Lincoln chose William Seward as his Secretary of State after Seward was his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860.

I don't doubt Hillary Clinton would make a GOOD choice for Secretary of State, but my worry is that there are better matches for her abilities, as well as people more qualified to be SecState. It's a good choice, but I think it's far from the BEST choice from either point of view -- hers or the job's.

I supported Obama in part to get the Clintons out of the spotlight....Barack....remember HC from the campaign trail....she was nasty and underhanded...now you want her at every cabinet meeting...Stupid! Also, does America want Bubba running around Washington again...God forbid!

Well, what did you expect? Of course Obama would surround himself with Clintonistans, because former President Bill Clinton had the best advisors out there, which is why he had such a successful presidency. Obama wants to hire back all of Clinton's advisors so he can recreate the Clinton era. The Democrats are all shaped by Clinton; no matter who you voted for in the democratic primary, you are going to vote someone who is going to put Clinton advisors right back into the White House. I guess if you are so disappointed, you should have voted for McCain!

Now, let's all practice:

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary as a Secretary of State?
Love Obama with all my heart!
But now I am a little disapointed, I mean so far the template that is being built is based on the old.I thought this was going to be change not a throwback, we have all of the same players affiliated in some way with the impeached Clinton from 9 years ago, please President Obama, start tapping into the talent of tomorrow and the powermovers of the NOW, Hillary and the Clintons made me lose a great deal of respect, however, they seemed to patch things up but I would not have her in my cabinet or adminstration if he knows what is right for him, loyalty is the most important asset or your team, she has shown the cards of being able to cast a spear into his back and not bat an eye.

It would be a hugh mistake to appoint a politician such as Clinton as Sec. of State. This position requires a diplomat of impecable character and extensive experience in international diplomacy. Look at the past ones - Albright, Powell, Rice. Not one was a politician.

if Hillary becomes the Sec. State, hopefully she will be able to concentrate on country-centric issues without being distracted by other drama or her career plans

Barack Obama’s decision to offer Hillary Clinton the Secretary of State post could well turn out to be his first major blunder, for these obvious reasons:

First, there’s the inseparable bond with her husband Bill. Given the duo’s unquenchable thirst for power, they would not be content to play second fiddle. From day one they would be scheming to usurp control of the White House. Once they get a foothold, Obama would be hard-pressed to rein them in.

Then, there’s the Clintons’ long history of corruption, deception and sleaze—Whitewatergate, Pardongate, Cattle-futuresgate, Chinagate, Filegate, Fellatiogate, the impeachment and near conviction, the punitive IRS audits, the violent deaths of potentially incriminating witness. This alone would provide Obama’s enemies with all the grime they needed to smear his presidency.

Consider further that unlike a Condoleezza Rice or a Madelaine Albright—not to mention bona fide statesmen like Henry Kissinger, Dean Rusk and John Foster Dulles--Hillary Clinton lacks the educational and cultural gravitas to represent our nation abroad. Her lawyering in Arkansas and stint in Congress doesn’t quite cut it. She did get 18 million votes in the Democratic primaries, probably more than Obama, but a large proportion of those votes were cast by diehard feminists and the less educated, hardly the constituency whose support lends credibility to a Secretary of State.

Barack Obama should recall the reasons why he didn’t choose Hillary as his VP running mate. For his and the nation’s sake, let us hope that she doesn’t accept his Secretary of State offer.
