SPRINGFIELD, Virginia - With just three days left to press his case, Sen. John McCain Saturday delivered an unabashed pitch contrasting his patriotism to Sen. Barack Obama's, sparking a nasty clash.

"We learn more and more about Senator Obama. He said the other day that his primary victory 'vindicated' his faith in America," McCain told booing supporters gathered just outside the Washington beltway. "My country has never had to prove anything to me, my friends. I've always had faith in it and I have been humbled and honored to serve it."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton called McCain's words "pathetic," and campaign aides insisted Obama was talking about the stepped-up grassroots activity he saw before the first primary votes were ever cast. But on Friday in Des Moines, Obama said that "on the day of the Iowa caucuses, my faith in the American people was vindicated," suggesting it was the result, not the process, that he was referring to.

"It's pathetic that John McCain would take a statement Barack Obama has been making for a year about his faith in the American people and distort it to attack his patriotism," Burton said. "Sadly, this is what we've come to expect from a desperate, dishonorable campaign that will say anything in a failed attempt to win this election."

McCain, however, repeated the charge in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, prefacing it by saying "the more Senator Obama talks, the more interesting it gets."

McCain has previously said that he would never question Obama's patriotism, but with time running out, he is increasingly stressing his long service to the nation compared to Obama's relative inexperience. In addition, he and his wife have begun talking about their two sons' active military service in the Navy and Marine Corps, a topic that McCain had long said was off limits.

There's a great deal that is personally at stake in the election, Cindy McCain told the crowd.

"Between the McCain family and the Palin family we have three fine young men serving on active duty in the military today," she said. "It became very clear to me that in order to bring our children home with honor and in victory we had to elect John McCain."

Virginia, with its 13 electoral votes, could mean the difference between victory and defeat for both men. The state hasn't voted for a Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, but polls indicate that voters are leaning towards Obama, especially here in Northern Virginia.

"I want to remind you again, Fairfax County is the key to this election. You know how important it is that we win here," said McCain, urging supporters to volunteer and knock on doors.

With its vast numbers of military and veterans here, McCain was sure to stress his ties during two Virginia stops, including Newport News.

"I've been fighting for this country since I was 17 years old and I have the scars to prove it," McCain said.

With time becoming increasingly finite before voters go to the polls, McCain prepared for a burst of campaigning, including his first midnight rally to be held in Miami Sunday night before beginning a 24-hour fly around to seven states on Monday, the last full day for campaigning.

On Sunday afternoon, he will take a sentimental journey, returning to New Hampshire for a town hall meeting in Peterborough. The Granite State is the scene of two of his greatest political triumphs - defeating George W. Bush by 19 points in 2000, and achieving an unprecedented comeback to win again in 2008.

Peterborough is particularly nostalgic for McCain. It was the sight of McCain's 100th town hall meeting during January's New Hampshire primary, and it was where he held his last town hall meeting before the 2000 primary.

The uniquely New England tradition of meeting at a town hall is McCain's favorite way to campaign, but it became increasingly rare as he delved deeper into the general election with the need to hammer a specific message each day.

That message has been increasingly focused on taxes, with McCain accusing Obama of wanting to raise middle class taxes and stifle economic growth. He said Obama initially said he would not raise taxes on people who make less than $250,000 a year. But then Sen. Joe Biden, Obama's running mate, said the cut-off was $150,000. And then New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, an Obama supporter, said people making under $120,000 a year would not see their taxes go up.

"Their definition of rich has a way of creeping down," said McCain.

Now McSame has to get into the gutter with Palin..They have had to stifle her hateful remarks and now he is doing the same thing. How Pathetic a campaign they have run..The old man is grasping at straws..

Here we go. McBush unloads his stink bombs. Funny how wrong I was about this guy years ago. I used to respect him but he is provimg to be just another lowlife politician. I feel sorry for all the other "heros" that this man can drag down the image. Just change the signs to read "me first".

"What I meant to say. . ."

Kind of like "For the first time in my life I am proud of my country."

John McCain's definition of dishonesty has a way of diluting itself very rapidly.

as the old saying goes: patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Whether McCain loses or wins, he's lost a lot in this campaign. This is the real McCain now.

Does McCain understand what "vindicated" means? Obama was saying that he already had faith in his country. Vindication means that an existing belief is confirmed

Every day McCain tries to do something cute. If he would talk about issues and things that really matter he might have a change. Instead, he plays word games with big words he doesn't understand.

yes, just like the 'proud of my country' comment in that it was distorted and twisted by the republicans. lies, distortions, smears, appeals to racism and xenophobia are all they've had to offer. they're losing because they are LOST. can't wait for nov. 4.

Senator McCain and all like-minded Republicans, get out of the mud !! It is beginning to stick to you, to the extent, that many of your former supporters, don't even recognize you any more !! Don't wallow in it, that's not becoming, a war hero, a true patriot !! Your hypocrisy is showing !! I guess it doesn't matter to you anymore, as bad as things look for you, in the up-coming election !!! Well, you have no one to blame, but yourself. Nobody told you to play gutter politics, or pick, a totally under-qualified running mate, in Governor Palin !! You made your bed, Senator McCain, now you have to sleep in it !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

More Conventional Wisdom... and the same crazy comments from the wing-nuts on the right, the same nutty comments this entire election, which is kind of sad, and shows a very strong lack of creativity on their part...

Heads out of the sand, America. To endorse John McCain is to say yes to failed policies that have led to international disrepute, to farflung misadventures that have not yielded Osama bin Laden, to a widened chasm between the haves and have nots, to name calling and division between parties that disagree. It is time to say no to all of this and to elevate to the highest office in the land the candidate who has proven he has the skills and temperament to shoulder the responsibilities. And that is Barack Obama. Take a cold, hard look at Sarah Palin, consider her comments, her wandering path to where she has arrived, and the fear she must strike in your reasonable heart and ask, "Do I want her as president?" Consider McCain's proclivity to recidivist cancer and age and understand that electing his is endorsing Palin as YOUR president. No Thanks!

Drown already GOP

This is clearly a choice between an Obamanation and an Abomination. The voters will decide. ............

Obviously Obama has had faith in America all along... You have to HAVE faith to have it VINDICATED.
McBush knows this, but his Rove Gingrich handlers tell him to exploit every strength of Obama and try to piss all over it since McBush is an empty suit that sold his soul to the NeoCon devil.

McCain did not prove that Obama is unpatriotic; McCain only proved that he is as stupid as Palin and does not understand the meaning of the term "vindicated." Obama was critiquing those who lacked faith in America, not displaying any lack of faith of his own. McCain also dishonorable and historically uninformed about the racial history of America, which was the actual context for the OBama quote.

Obama predicted that McShame would wade even deeper into the muck the last couple of days of the election. This man has no shame. His reputation, and that of his idiot sidekick, are forever ruined.

This is the same John McCain who said he never really loved his country until he became a POW. Every smear he launches at Obama morphs into the same thing against him -- he goes after Obama for knowing Khalidi when it turns out McCain had *funded* Khalidi's group. He calls him a "redistributor" while McCain's runing mate sends over $3,000 a year in state tax money collected from oil companies to Alaskan citizens -- money "redistributed" from all of us who buy gas. Alaska is the most heavily subsidized state in the nation. The hypocrisy is astounding.

This questioning of patriotism has got to end. Now. Apparently, according to Sarah Palin, if you don't live in a small town, you are anti-American. I agree with the Obama campaign. Pathetic. Just pathetic. The American people want a leader, not an spoilt two year-old. Let's finally move away from the Bush-Rove-McCain politics of the past, and hope we can have some kind of better future for this great country.

More fear and smear from the guy that says he'll unite the country. Where have we heard that before?

How long before he says a vote for Obama is a vote for bin Laden?

What was 66 2/3 rds. McCain thinking?

I feel like McCain is not only trying to destroy any chance he has of winning the election, but also trying to destroy any chance of saving his reputation.

He is turning into a very small man

I have been an Obama supporter since the primaries. I am an independant and thoroughly researched both candidates and their positions and the plausibility of each strategy's ability to fix our country. I have always felt that Obama was the best person to restore our economy and repair our relations with foreign allies and foes alike. These desperate name calling episodes by McCain further validate my choice. In times of pressure, we need a leader who can remain level headed and treat everyone with respect. McCain is acting like a grade school bully, who is being put in his place. McCain keeps bringing up his experience, but the qualities that make Obama the obvious choice for president such as: common sense, intelligence, compassion, and the ability to bring knowledgeable people together to tackle a common problem don't require experience. They are something a person just has.

McCain's ego is too large to surround himself with strong, intelligent people. He feels he knows it all and will never allow anyone to question him. He thought he got this with choosing Palin, someone who would go along for the ride, never questioning him, but he was wrong on that one too. Which is why he is so discouraged with her. At first, when she opened her mouth to talk, one could mistake her for McCain, other than the pitch of the voice. The words were exactly the same. She surely has shown her "Maverick" style, deviating from McCain's plan.

McCain needs to revert to the time old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I know I am so sick and tired of listening to his rants. There is no substance to them. He is suppose to be talking about what he will do as President. Instead he misconstrues facts to attack his opponent. If this is how he deals with adversaries, I doubt foreign leaders will appreciate his style. No one is going to rally beside him in trying times, as most grown adults have grown out of this type of behavior.

I spent six years as an infantryman ending up a staff sergeant. I am proud of my country and want what is best for her. No one questions my patriotism. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, I consider BOTH John McCain and Barack Obama to be patriotic Americans. Having said that, I am supporting Barack Obama.

How about another of Michelle Obama's famous statements: America is a downright mean country."

The media will find out just how angry they have perpetrated this fraud on the American people - with all their totally biased, in the tank coverage of Obama on this Obama campaign.

Completely "dismissing" the multitude of bad associations and poor judgments that Obama has show.
His inexperience, weakness and inability to make a decision.
Now we find out about his aunt living in a Boston slum, 3 court cases involving his birth certificate - and the Old stories: Rev GD AmerKKKa Wright, Bill Ayres, Louis Farrakhan, Father Fleuger, Tony Rezko, illegal capmpaign contributions, ACORN silencing the press and investigating private citizens by hacking into state computers. There is NO END to the clouds that
hang above this man's head.
And yet, the media persists in anointed "The Missiah."
I hope the print media loses all their paid subscriptions and the networks lose their ad base as well.
Shame on all of you!

I stated before that John McCain is the only true American in this race for the White House. Check out
Obama's past and his record, and how blind can you be.
I am scared to death of what will become of this great nation under his command.

Yeah, Obama's saying something about vindication is almost as bad as McCain's calling the audience "prisoners". Neither gaffe, if we can call them that, make a difference. We learn more about a stupid avoidance of real issues every day from the McCain campaign. He's going to lose because he can't win on issues that matter to Real Americans.

When the election process began almost 2 years ago, I looked at all the choices and told my family that McCain was the best choice. I had a lot of reasons to back up my opinion. Boy, have I had to eat my words. I cant even believe that I once supported this guy. I guess when the chips are down, the true person comes out. Makes me wonder what kind of war hero he really was. From what I've read, I would at this point question his honor and dedication to our country. I've heard him talk about family values and then learned about his commitment to his first wife. This guy is only after his own interests. If he loses, maybe he can by stock in a yoyo company.

Calling John McCain the "only true American in this race" doesn't say much nice about Palin.

Seriously, get over it. Quit believing everything you get in email messages and think for yourself. Both men are decent and love their country.
You don't need to construct a fantasy world to feel better about your choice. Just say you agree with him on issues.

Shame on all of you!

Your divisive politics are a thing of the past. Quite unamerican, unless of course, you honor McCarthy. After reading how many people are tired of the slime, how is it you don't get it? Do you also carve those names you write, over and over as if somehow something will change, in cuneiform?

Mr. McCain,

Obama has faith in America...is illegal aunt has been living off of our tax dollars for years and even mustared up $260.00 for little Barry's campaign.

Duhhh, what's wrong with you Mr McCain...don't you believe in socialism and illegal immigration?

Welcome to the Obamanation!

Paulo

Is McCain a black man with a funny name who got white people to vote for him? He wouldn't understand what Obama was saying in the first place. Out of touch.

To say McCain threw his standards out the window is a huge understatement.

I love how he deploys the same tactics he supposedly deplores.

McCain is just like Bush-a liar. What's even worse is the supporters that will vote for him have seen this before.

So here's to those that prefer to divide the country. Let's just seperate the Real Americans from everyone else.

I'd be interested in how the real Americans would fare with that trillion dollar federal budget deficit.

I just don't get how real Americans would buy those deficit dollars. Maybe the war economy will sustain them.

.

This is truly sad. I used to admire McCain enough to want him to win the primaries in 2000. He is just a shell of his former honorable, honest self. You know things must be really bad if he's resorting to twisting his opponents words so badly they no longer sound like what was actually said. John McCain will lose because he turned to a slimy, divisive campaign instead of talking to the American people. John McCain should spend the last few days before the election trying to get fix his reputation.

The Republicans can have Joe the Plumber. The real-life Average American, the nation's actual most statistically average man or woman, discovered after a long non-partisan search, has come out for Obama, according to the search's website: http://www.theaverageamerican.com

Maybe, in McCain's eyes, the country hasn't had to prove anything to him because it treated his family and his ethnicity with extreme deference.

It's easy to like the system that has treated you and your clan favorably.

I am proud of Senator McCain for holding to his promises about taking only public funds, for continuously believing in the good of America, for not flip-flopping on the issues, for being a hero who continues to serve his country, for being a man of integrity, good character, and for his good morals. I'm proud of him for not telling us what we might want to hear but for telling us the things that will be possible to change once a new president takes office as opposed to empty promises that only an inexperienced candidate will tell you that he'll be able to 100% be able to change - we all know that's not true - it has to be approved through the House and Senate first - which means that we really need to focus on those elected seats because they have way more power than one might presume. And in closing, I believe that John McCain has the most experience to be President, especially during war time, with his military background and years of service. I also fully believe that our foreign diplomats and leaders will respond better to John McCain than Barack Obama based on this history of respect, experience, and established relationship that McCain has with them. As for Sarah Palin's experience for VP, or President if she had to step in, she has ample experience to carry out the tasks - I might point out that she currently has more experience than former President Ronald Reagan had when he took office. He was an actor turned Governor - not a lawyer and he did not have other credientials beyond Governor. Sarah Palin has been a Mayor, a Governor, and also the Chief Commander of the Alaska Military Reservists - a multiple of experience - more than a former president that went on to become one of the greats!

McCain told booing supporters gathered just outside the Washington beltway, "My country has never had to prove anything to me, my friends.
-
We're going to prove something to you this Tuesday, my friend. We're going to prove that America is fed up with the GOP.

Like Gen. Colin Powell:

The first to "investigate" -- and cover up -- the My Lai massacre.

Lies the country into illegally invading and occupying Iraq, even though he knew there were no WMDs, he was throwing away the lives of his troops for a lie, and for a lost cause.

Participates in the planning and immposition of the war crime of torture -- which cannot be made legal, and efforts to make it legal are also illegal -- and allows those who OBEYED the orders to do the torture to do HIS jail-time FOR him.

The media won't tell the truth about Powell because the Republicans won't like it. Fake heroism is more important than country.

It's too bad that too many of McSame's fellow Vets don't feel the same, and that John continues to vote against helping them out. It's sad that John finds himself married to enough money that he feels that those who choose to serve our military shouldn't deserve a full ride if/when they get out and want to enroll in college.
How about the faith in what you actually stood for? Instead of hiring the exact same people you despised for smearing you and spreading hate-mongering stereotypical lies about you? Where's the honor in that? Faith - a buzz word chainsawed by the Resmuglican party and used far too often to have any real meaning.
