When the economy is unsteady and there's a surplus of job applicants, employers can be more exacting in their requirements. The incoming Obama Administration is no different, and maybe even more demanding than many an employer since it is one of the most sought-after potential employers because of its historic nature.
As the New York Times reports, the Obama employment application gets pretty granular in terms of the details of applicants and their spouses. It's meant to avoid scandals and embarrassments. If the future Obama Administration can do that, it would be the first in history. But you can't blame them for trying.
Here's an excerpt:
Only the smallest details are excluded; traffic tickets carrying fines of less than $50 need not be reported, the application says. Applicants are asked whether they or anyone in their family owns a gun. They must include any e-mail that might embarrass the president-elect, along with any blog posts and links to their Facebook pages.
The application also asks applicants to "please list all aliases or 'handles' you have used to communicate on the Internet."
The vetting process for executive branch jobs has been onerous for decades, with each incoming administration erecting new barriers in an effort to avoid the mistakes of the past, or the controversies of the present. It is typically updated to reflect technological change (there was no Facebook the last time a new president came to town).
But Mr. Obama has elevated the vetting even beyond what might have been expected, especially when it comes to applicants' family members, in a reflection of his campaign rhetoric against lobbying and the back-scratching, self-serving ways of Washington.
"President-elect Obama made a commitment to change the way Washington does business, and the vetting process exemplifies that," said Stephanie Cutter, chief spokeswoman for the Obama transition office.
Jobs with the mortgage-finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have served as lucrative incubators for Democratic and Republican administration officials. But those affiliations have become potentially toxic since the government seized both companies after years of financial irregularities that have stoked the economic crisis.
Not surprisingly, then, Question 18 of the Obama application asks whether "you, your spouse or any member of your immediate family" have been affiliated with Fannie, Freddie, American International Group, Washington Mutual and any other institution getting a government bailout.

Kind of looks like the "Illinois Democrats Rock the Boat" ethics legislation and promises of increased, better ethics for legislators and state employees. What we do know in Illinois is that the "Smoke Screen" of ethics is just that - Smoke and nothing else.
How can the president elect put out these statements about Administration positions and lobbyists while hiring them for his new administration? Didn't he say during his campaign that he never took a dime from them and they would not have a job in his administration?

Names I've heard bandied just last night include Bill Daley (Duh Mare's Brudder) and the Mob-connected Alexi Gianoulias. So if they're being tapped, then team Obama is much less discerning then you're saying, Frank.

I think what Obama is doing with the hiring process is the way to go after the last 8 yrs.

was the gun question REALLY all that necessary considering the questions surrounding it? I love how it is lodged between breaking the law and embarassment on facebook.

Winston Churchill in an electoral broadcast prior to the British general election of 1945:
...a socialist policy is abhorrent to the British ideas of freedom. Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance.

Isn't Rahm an alum of Freddie and/or Fannie? Interesting...

With his past affiliations, Obama wouldn't be able to get a CIA security clearance or pass the vetting process for federal agents, let alone pass his own ego-driven screening process as reported above. I'll admit that he's fresh, young, and charismatic...but I don't trust him.

Can I apply? He promised to pay my bills and give me a house, didn't he? He is just a schill for the Neo Communist Party that is taking over government. WHy else would we participate in the Beijing Olympics? Why would Bush go to a UN Conferrence on religeous tolerance sponsored by Saudi Arabia, land of zero religeous tolerance? It's all crashing down

This is really rich, the guy who threw all the undesireables he associated with under the bus and all he had to say is "that is not the (insert name) I knew" and he got a pass. Perhaps he should have been held to the same standards.

Under the above rules, could Rahm Emanuel, a former Freddie Mac Board member, get a job in the Obama administration?
For that matter, could 17-year tax scofflaw Barack Obama qualify for a job in his own administration?

Well so far Obama has mentioned 3 Idiots.....besides himself....Bill Daley, Alexi Gianoulis and RAHM.....We will see changes but it will not be for the better THAT'S FOR SURE.

The funny thing is Obama wouldn't pass his own vetting process!!
What difference does it make if someone in my family owns a legally registered gun? It's not against the law...yet...
Posted by: tia | November 13, 2008 10:53 AM
Please Mr. King, the election is over and Bush is history. No need to keep comparing Bush to everything evil in your mind.
Let's just keep an eye on the president elect, he's got four years to disenfranchise his faithfull followers and develope his own hate group.

Uh, why Washington Mutual? They were acquired by Chase and not recipient of bailout money.

Turns out the grandmother that Obama loved SOOOOOO much will be put on ice until December. Obama is TOOOO busy to do a funeral at this time and it is post-poned until desember.
Pathetic.

Hell what do you expect to happen with the hiring? Obama is going to be like every other politician elected to a high post, he will put his friends, people who gave most in donations and people who worked for his election into jobs. Nothing is going to change with this democrat. If you believed his campaign rhetoric then that is what he wanted. Gotta do the payback which is what they live by. He is a politician and that is all he is. Don't expect anything to change it won't. May look like it on the surface but it won't, politics is politics!

"Obama wouldn't be able to get a CIA security clearance or pass the vetting process for federal agents"
Wrong. He already had clearances from being on the Senate Foreign Relations committee.
Any more myths you care for me to dispel?

The Chicago Tribune reported after leaving the Clinton administration Rahm Emmanuel worked for Fannie Mae and made a great sum of money. Emmanuel then ran for Congress and won.
Would this prevent Emmanuel from having a position in the Obama administration?
Also would the assistance that Emmanuel received from convicted felon, Donald Tomczak, in his election campaign prevent him from serving for Obama?

Obama is "vetting" his team with extreme prejudice? I wish everyone had vetted him with the same amount of scrutiny as he is doing now. If he was vetted in this way, he never would have made it past Super Tuesday.
As for his security clearence, I know from first hand experience that with all of Obama's associations, he would not even be able to obtain a confidential clearence.

I truly hope I am wrong, but I think a LOT of people who voted for Obama will be very disappointed in his presidency.

I did not vote for Mr. Obama, but can't we at least assume this process is a good thing? The main problem with the President and VP elect is, and has been, the socialistic government-dependent direction they will be taking the U.S. I don't care what's on their Facebook account. I want to know how many people they will be giving handouts to.

Blog handles?
Ohio v. MacIntyre established the right to anonymitiy of political pamphletting. And Elizabeth Edwards rightly described bloggers as the new pamphleteers.
So, how BUSH-ESQUE of the administration to ask for blog handles.
As Franklin Delano Roosevelt wisely said:
"They (who) seek to establish systems of goverrnment based on the regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers, call this a new order. It is not new and it is not order."

Heck - BO couldn't even get a job in his administration.
"Only the smallest details are excluded; traffic tickets carrying fines of less than $50 need not be reported, the application says."
Remember just before BO declared his canidacy for president, he had to settle some unpaid parking tickets in Cambridge?
Last time I checked $375 is larger than $50.

.
Obama is all about controlling the message and restricting communication. Remember "C'mon guys, I answered like, 8 questions"?
.
Remember that it took 16 months of steady pressure before he finally (reluctantly) caved and told some of the truth about his relationship with Tony Rezko?
.
We are going to see a very tightly maintained propaganda machine. FDR was right. It's not new.

I find this absolutely obsurd. A man who hid who he is and what he stands for and is now is requiring exactly what the American people had asked of him for the application to the presidency? can we say CONTRADICTING?
This guy really slays me. He is already talking about bring the detainee ter rorists from Cuba to the USA and release some of those beng detained for no apparent reason other then they were captured on the battle field because no other country will take them, now we are discussing islamic banking habits where the government controls our invested money and mortgages? one note... if we allow banks to buy homes and sell them at a higher rate instead of providing mortgages with interest... doesn't that put a cabash to the potential to lower payments as needed by lowering interest rates or re-financing. We aren't all rich people and we are more at risk of losing our jobs then are politicians.
This guy expects people to give out all their personal information and online activity but he refused to give us any indication of his lifestyle?
Shaking my head.
Obummer is said to have the largest online network to communicate with everyone as online communication reaches many.
Maybe this is a his mission to gain access to anyone who has said anything negative about him.
He is good at silencing the negativities in his life. He showed that very well during the election. Does anyone know where his college friends are or who they are? The media would pay big bucks to know this.

Why would any sane person want this job? I know I'm a crazy liberal, but please tell me who among YOU would pass the public opinion test? Not just YOU, but everyone you have ever associated with? Who would want to be President? The salary does not come close to the demands of the job-why would anyone want to be in public service with this kind of scrutiny and vitriol heaped upon them and anyone they have ever known? SHUT UP! The new administration is trying--in my opinion, they should stop trying to please everyone and just get to business. Glass houses, people--we all know how the game is played. If you could pass a security test, why aren't YOU running for President? Are you even a Alderman for your hometown ward? Put up or shut up--would YOU pass the test??
