Obama out-foxes FOX, talks around it: The Swamp

by Andrew Malcolm, writing for the Ticket

Back jn October then-Sen. Barack Obama granted a then-rare campaign interview. That time, not surprisingly, it went to the New York Times Magazine and the candidate reportedly whined to the writer:

"I am convinced that if there were no Fox News, I might be two or three points higher in the polls. If I were watching Fox News, I wouldn't vote for me, right?

"Because the way I'm portrayed 24/7 is as a freak! I am the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?"

It's not unusual for public figures to feel misportrayed or even abused by media organizations. John McCain and his people expressed some strong concerns several times about the same Times newspaper.

Now that the campaign is over and Obama is president-elect, his reticence to talk with the media is gone. Now, he's eager to spread the impression of abundant pre-oath energy and activity.

So, he's held four news conferences and two sit-down TV interviews since Election Day, including three news conferences three days in a row this week. He's broken the news conference record for all recent presidents-elect.

At these news sessions since Nov. 4, the future commander in chief has answered a total of 22 questions from different reporters. Wednesday, it was NPR, the New York Daily News and CNN.

But not once has the election victor called on a representative of Fox News. He just hasn't seemed to spot them waving their hand for recognition.

Fox News is widely viewed among Democrats as a Republican news organization, although it might be hard to convince George W. Bush of that after Fox's 2000 DUI story that cost his campaign Maine (and allowed Florida's disputed vote-counting to matter).

Or to convince Sarah Palin that Fox is GOP-flavored, even if she knew she was in Africa when you told her.

It appears to be an Obama coincidence, like Bush not finding room for a liberal New York Times interview in his impossible presidential schedule for the past several years.

Long-term vindictiveness is not a viable political communications strategy for those who've won elections. As Bush's exit era sub-basement approval ratings might suggest. But officeholders must learn that lesson for themselves.

Or not. b

A solid point ("Long-term vindictiveness is not a viable political communications strategy for those who've won elections.") amid an otherwise biased article.

Obama will go back to Fox in 2012, so he has to be careful in between now and then.

Actually, if you look up the contribution records, Fox employees donated more to Democrats than Republicans. Fox isn't Republican. However, Fox is not at the 15-1 Dem over GOP levels that is usual with reporters.

The Fox employees may be democratic, but the editorial policy is solidly Republican - I am a Republican and even I stopped watching Fox because of the bias.

All of these Republican water-carriers who faithfully parroted every lunacy and vicious Bush/Cheney lie of the last eight years are seeing their Propaganda Factory shut down and put out of business. They can't control the national conversation anymore, so they're all angling to be considered "one of the good ones" in the post-conservative era. I look for a lot of these guys to start avoiding Fixed News Channel like the plague the next few years as they seek to rehab their reputations.
.

Rupert and Ailes have built a news station based not on news but on lies and deceit. They hired the worst of the worst and made them part of the national conversation. I hope they burn that place down. They use that station to demonize people that don't agree with them, so screw them all.

I think Faux news tried to be the Limbo of the television world. I would also imagine that both are going back to the drawing board to revise their strategy, which is truly a failing one at that. The only real, fair and balanced, news, takes place on Sunday mornings or on PBS.

Republicans prefer media outlets whose bias is toward dumb. Faux News leaps to mind of course, but there is also the "New York Post," "The Washington Times," the editorial page of "The Wall Street Journal," the "Pittsburg Tribune-Review," William Kristol of "The New York Times" of all places, and AM blowhard radio. Republican supporters all.

Any of these entities, given the choice, will take dumb over smart every time. Rush Limbaugh defended his title as the Prince of Dumb the other day by claiming that Barack Obama had caused the current economic mess.

"The Obama recession is in full swing, ladies and gentlemen," Limbaugh said on his radio show.
.
That’s dumber than even William Kristol will go.

The GOP could start lurching back to smart in an effort to win back voters but it seems to be going the other way. They’re already talking up Sarah the Blunder Woman for president in 2012. Many smart conservatives – George Will, Colin Powell, Christopher Buckley, Chuck Hagel – are or already have, jumped ship.

Republican "leaders" will have to be content to win the dumbed down talking point games with their deadender followers rather than elections from now on. They can’t afford to lose any more true believers or their won't be anyone left in the party.

Teresa--we still need media reform. One SOURCE, albeit a powerful one like a president, is not enough to get rid of the rot that is our media.

America needs more news like Fox and less like NBC-

Obama is a vindictive, whiny baby. That's about the only answer here. God help us all.

Fox needs Democrats to come on its network to give it legitimacy. If they don't show up, what are they going to do....they are going to sit there like spoiled brats and start running their meters saying XX #days since YY Democrat appeared on my show and I'm going to cry.

And of course, sure as shooting, YY Democrat will show up on their show and get talked over, shouted down, interrupted and then have what they tried to say cut up into conveniently edited and strategically truncated clips which totally twist the truth....and then Faux will claim they are being fair and balanced.

We've got a nation going down the tubes financially, a war in Iraq, a broken health care system, a giant national fire sale of housing, and we're sitting here worrying and caring about what Republicans (who caused this mess) and their mouthpiece, Faux News thinks?

There are MANY more important things to do with this country than to worry about the fellings of Faux News. I hope they tank.

This is one of the best moves President-elect Obama has made so far. I hope other Dems take note, follow suit and avoid Fixed News from now on. They aren't a legitimate news service anyway, so let them swim in their own toxic stew with members of the Repub party that they love so much from now on.

Obama calls on real reporters. Fox still doesn't have any.

The fox news channel is a hardcore republican supporter which is proved in the earlier elections.

Isn't the owner of fake-news-channel a staunch conservative and that is why thye have such a slant? I can't watch it or Morning Joe. Joe is just...I guess beyond description and Mika sill is trying to look Palin like with her hairdon'ts.

What's good for the Cougar is good for the Fox! GRRRRRREAT OBAMA

I wonder if BO will give Chris"Tingle down My Leg" Matthews an interview. You flatliners complain abot Fox as leaning to the right, but have no problem with PMSNBC and its downright cheerleading.
.
Here is a transcript (loons, don't get you panties in abundle over the source - its called a transcript) of a few MSM the day after the election.
.
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_110708/content/01125108.guest.html
.
Read their comments and you must ask yourself if the media has these doubts, why weren't they being shared with the public before the election? What they knew about BO wasn't good and the MSM decided to sit on it.

GOPer lover Terry,
You find one example and you use RUSH?!?! as your source?

HAHAHA!

Terri,
This is the kind of garbage that comes from the dark side (your side) every single day.

Malcolm writes that "But not once has the election victor called on a representative of Fox News." And he labels it as outfoxing FOX. Wow!!!
Does anyone here feel that Barak still doesn't want to answer tough questions but prefers to talk in vague generalities. He is still afraid of being asked tough questions.

I think we all have to remind ourselves of Barak's behavior when Carol Marin asked him some tough questions during the campaign for the nomination.

Terry, I did not click on your link as I saw your source. You REALLY need to see the documentary called Boogie Man, which is about Lee Atwater. Here is a link. http://www.boogiemanfilm.com/ And you know what, if you do not want to buy the video….go to your local library and rent it for free. But many of you on the right need to see the right for what it is, by studying the history and trend of that party.

Xcell,

Here is the video - click on this - from Brokaw's own mouth.
.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzMas1bVidw
.
What's you point about Atwater documentary?
.
You won't click on a link of a transcript because it is from Rush Limbaugh's website? What are you afraid of. Like I said to the loons - don't get your panties in a bundle of the source.

I wouldn't fault Obama at all if he never spoke to or called upon a Fox reporter for the next 8 years.
Their treatment of his candidacy was reprehensible.
All those sly innuendos, photoshopping his photographs to make him look bad, and on and on. I lost track. I'm a captive audience as a token Democrat at my club, where all the TV's seem to be hard wired to Fox. So I saw more than enough of their campaign against Obama.
Barack did get a zinger off at "Rupert" at that Al Smith Dinner, which was merited.
But he's be well within rights not to speak to Fox at all.

Xcell,

I'll try to post this for the third time - it is the actual words from Brokaw's mouth. Maybe SWAMP won't post the you-tube link.
.
So "youtube" Rose Brokaw Obama and click on the link called:
.
"Brokaw and Rose Admit They Don't Know Much About Obama."
.
You will hear the words straight from Brokaw's and Rose's mouth. By the way, the link doesn't bite - it is a transcript of what Brokaw and Rose are saying.
.
What does Atwater have to do with this anyway?

Terri,
Just like you, Brokaw is a long time hardcore rightwing luntic fringer.

Try again....

Fixed,

Brokaw - a hardcore rightwing lunitic fringer?
.
Who is your supplier? That must be some mighty good stuff.
