President-elect Barack Obama has picked Eric Holder to be his attorney general, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff is reporting.
Holder is another former Clinton Administration official so he's sure to draw complaints from those who say that Obama's choices of members of the last Democratic administration don't exactly look like "change we can believe in." Holder was deputy attorney general to Janet Reno who headed the Clinton Justice Department.
But Holder is well-known to Obama. A former federal judge, Holder helped to vet those on Obama's vice presidential shortlist. If confirmed, he would be the first African-American to lead Justice.
He doesn't come without controversy, however, which is likely to be raised at his confirmation hearings. Holder was responsible for vetting the pardons at the end of the Clinton Administration, including the controversial one for Marc Rich, the fugitive fundraiser, whose ex-wife had made a large donation to Clinton.

yeah this is shaping up to be the Clinton Administration Redux. May as well add Hillary at this point while he's at it. Not what I expected when I voted for the guy

The Eric Holder who was hip-deep in the Clinton pardon scandals?
Rep. Henry Waxman, veteran Liberal Democrat, declared that the Rich pardon was a “bad precedent, an end run around the judicial process, and appeared to set a double standard for the wealthy and powerful” and that had a Republican president “presided over a pardon process that resembled the chaotic mess that seemingly characterized the final days of the Clinton administration, I would be outraged and would criticize it.”
Another Obama supporter, the NY Times's Maureen Dowd, remarked that with the pardons the Clintons
"perverted the legal system and may have traded a constitutional power for personal benefit. … The Clintons ran a cash-and-carry White House. They were either hawking stuff or carting it off."

Bad choice-
Chicago Democrats should love him-

Change? His motto should have been "Change Back to Clinton Admin"
Should have just voted for Hillary.

So far, the American Bar Association Journal's November 2008 article, "The Lawyers Who May Run America," is shaping up to correctly identify Obama's picks for top offices. According to the ABA's article, Holder may be a "familiar fixture in the Clinton administration," but he was well-known to Republican admins as well, having served for a short time under Bush before Ashcroft was sworn in.

Is it so bad to have something resembling the Clinton years? Weren't the 1990's some of the most prosperous and stable times for America? Yea, God forbid we have stability as a nation and leaders who are intelligent and make good choices just like those 8 years with Clinton...Jesus people, look at the bright side: Bush is gone...

Clinton Redux is a bad thing???? 8 years of peace and prosperity sounds good to me. Why does that disturb Republicans? Oh yeah they prefer 8 years of misery and war.

Where do you find people with experience? From government, including past administrations.
Duh.

Let's not forget some of the other notable Clinton pardons of Jan 20, 2001: Henry Cisneros, Roger Clinton, Susan McDougal, and Patti Hearst

I'll give this appointment a below average.

By the way, as US Attorney, Eric Holder was the guy who indicted Dan Rostenkowsi and was responsible for his eventual conviction.

Yes, by all means. Let's go back to the Clinton 90s. They were very stable and prosperous...except for the first World Trade Center bombing...and the attack on the U.S.S. Cole...and the collapse of the "dot com" bubble....Oh, how I long for those days.

I love to hear the criticism of Obama selections by those who did not vote for Obama and claim they did. What is so apparent that it is partisan rancor rather than an honest difference in opinion is that the criticism is so superficial. The inaneness of the Obama critics makes their carping humorous.

It's a fine line. If he opts to only bring he outsiders, he risks the lack of legislative success the Carter administration suffered.
He needs a balance of outsiders (for change) & insiders (to work through the ways of Washington). It's early, let's give the man a chance & hold-off criticism until we see results (or the lack thereof).

Obama is becoming president at a pivotal moment in the nation's history, with the economy in free fall and two wars underway. Change is good, yes, but there's something to be said for hiring the most experienced people out there—which means people who worked in the most recent Democratic administration.

I'm stunned that people think the 'Clinton years were soooo prosperous'. We had a recession, a dot.com bust. Clinton only was fortunate enough to have had the dot.com boom during his years, but he had ZERO to do with that. While he was in office he gave away the farm....NAFTA. Get real people!

After readung the above coments other coments on this blog-
Looks as if Obama is trying to tie in all the Democrats so their wiil be no out standing Democrat to run aganis him in four years--

Change obviously was in name only...

Let's hope the Dem understand governing is different and would require real insight to be succesful.

People, people, people get over it. Obama is going to hire people that are qualified #1.
The Clinton thing is just the spin doctors (media) making the selection or the event biggger that what it is. This is not Hollywood this is politics and the time is to focus on solutions and give Obama appointments a chance before you throw stones. Relax, life is good and tomorrow will be even better when Obama becomes President.

It sounds like so many of the comments referring back to the Clinton years as a bad thing are quite well rehearsed. I might suggest to all the people just waiting with their dittohead scripts to post on message boards, that their time might be better spent actually getting the full story and working to make the country better.
Simply repeating what you hear on am talk radio does not help the country and is not very patriotic.

I did! Both primary and GE (I wrote her in). At least Iknew what I was doing...

Holder is mistake number 1, I was hoping for so much more. And to the goof who referred the Clinton years as the "most prosperous" in American history - It was the Reagan years. Holder is just another liberal patsy.

I have witnessed Mr. Holder many times on C-SPAN when he testified in front of many Congressional Committees.
He is an impressive individual and would by a dynamic AG.
That said, I am disturbed with his complicity in the Clinton Rich pardon.
Mr. Holder MUST be held accountable to this and Mr. Obama MUST demand this accountability.
While I'm not sure that this is a deal breaker for confirmation, I would be disturbed to see "Change we can believe in" become nothing more than that same old Washington.
I voted for Obama, but I'm still not holding my breath.

We have to remember, Obama has spoken for change and RESTORING the MORAL compass in the USA. That alone puts Obama on a higher platform than Clinton could ever reach! Smart LEADERS know what their weaknesses are and fill that void with successful, intelligent resources. Yes, it may look like the Clinton admin. all over, but is there something wrong with having the most adept people making decisions? Would you rather Obama pick a bunch of people from the Bush administration?? I'm sorry, but I think having someone with experience and knowledge is necessary to help us get back on track. You people who are criticizing Obama for picking the "old administration" are probably the same people who critized Obama for being too inexperienced. . . hmmm . . . He's not perfect, but he's definitely trying to do his best to help restore the dignity and pride in the USA.

I can't wait for Obama-drama, when the president-elect finally is forced to make a real decision on anything (I do mean anything) and his approval rating plummets.
Welcome to the real world, Mr. Change Agent. There are no easy answers and you sold us a bill of goods.
I affixed my "Don't blame me, I voted for McCain" bumper sticker on my car this evening.

Glad I voted for Baldwin now. Obama is no change. I had hope for him but he is just another lying hack. We have been conned again. Remember, the Clinton adminstration was full of murders, treason, drugs, sell of our national parks to un, and we are going back. Does not much matter. We are about to hit rock bottom with the Federal Reserve finally destroying our country. Jim Traficant was right when he warned of this in 1993 and Thomas Jefferson did as well back in 1776.
Posted by: Ashley | November 18, 2008 11:32 PM
I certainly hope that the President-elect will do well but I have my doubts. I would not mind being proven wrong, however. Clarification: I thought that it was patriotic to express dissent? Is that true only when directed against Republicans?
Posted by: Bill | November 19, 2008 12:05 AM
It appeared to everyone at the time that the "Clinton pardons" had to do with raising funds and helping Hillary get elected in New York!
Not only Marc Rich was pardoned but it appeared the pardon of the Orthodox rabbi in New York was done with the understanding that his community would do the support Hillary.
These are questions that Eric Holder must respond to and not hide behind attorney-client privledge or executive privledge.

I love how Republicans trot out Holders connections with Clinton's pardons. Get ready for the silence when Bush pardons everyone and anyone who had any knowledge of US interrogation tactics.
