The Swamp

by Frank James

Sen. Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois, is the person who gets credit for asking President-elect Barack Obama in 2006 the critical question that helped the junior senator decide to run for the White House: "Do you really think sticking around the Senate for four more years and casting a thousand more votes will make you more qualified for president?"

Durbin obviously knew something a lot of other people didn't at the time. Today, Durbin issued a statement in response to Obama's announcement that he will resign his Senate seat on Sunday.

"No Senator in our history has made such an impact on America in so short a time.

It has been an honor to call Barack Obama my Senate colleague and work closely with him for our state and nation.

Though he will no longer be by my side in the Senate, I will be by his side as he leads our nation forward."

Too bad neither has any influence with the Governor for a replacement for Obama-

I'm looking forward to moving forward. There is just so much to do. I'm wondering who will be the replacement

Jan Schakowsky for the Senate.

Hoe you are kidding with her husband's background- no way-

Wake me up when Durbin actually has something to say.

Durbin was also the one that told Obama when he had decided not to run..."sometimes you pick the time and sometimes the time picks you." If Durbin hadn't encouraged Obama to run in the first place, he wouldn't be a President-Elect Barack Obama today.

I get a kick out of Illinois Wingnuts who are always crying about Durbin yet they can't ever come up with a Repug candidate who is good enough to beat him.

Typical Wingers, all bluster no action...

Obama is suddenly a revered star. I fear

Tammy Duckworth would be a good choice.

Not only is it great to have a former U.S. Senator, President-elect Barack Obama, from Illinois as our next President, it is fantastic that, our senior Senator, the good Senator Durbin, will still be able to consult and advise, when needed. In my humble opinion, there was only one other time, in my memory, that Illinois had two, statesman-like Senators. That was during the tenures of Senator Dirksen and Senator Douglas, two giants of the Senate, who served their country and our state, the State of Illinois, very well !! That inspiring tradition had continued with Senators Durbin and Obama, until the good people of America selected Senator Obama for the highest Office in the land. I know President-elect Obama will make America proud, as well as our state, the good state of Illinois. Good luck to our President-elect, Senator Obama and continued good luck to our senior Senator, Senator Durbin !!

A somewhat hard faught, close race. Do veterans who were only POWs get the respect of the right? Or is it just their views that make them heros?

Ms Duckworth would be an excellent choice, for our U.S. Senate. What a better way of showing our appreciation for her service to our country, than by electing her to the Senate ! I know the Bush-McCain Republicans will think twice, before trying to smear her good name, as the last election showed them, just what the American electorate thinks of their destructive politics !! Let the State of Illinois continue to lead America, into the light of liberal politics, where the citizens of America are more important than the politicians or the Corps !! Senator Durbin and Senator Duckworth sounds like a winning combination to me !!
