Our friends at Top of the Ticket are calling President-elect Barack Obama's press-conference joke about Nancy Reagan Obama's "first gaffe.''

The president-elect must have thought so too, because he quickly telephoned the former first lady to apologize for "a careless and offhanded remark.''

At his first, and brief, post-election press conference on Friday, our colleague Andrew Malcolm notes, Obama was asked how he was preparing to take over the White House, what books he's reading, if he'd talked to any ex-presidents.

"In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living,'' Obama said. "Obviously, President Clinton -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances."

"The passing reference to the former first lady's alleged interest in horoscopes struck some observers as a gratuitous slap at an old lady at a time Obama was trying to set a positive, professed bipartisan tone for his transition,'' Malcolm notes. "The Obama press office received numerous inquiries for explanation and reaction.''

""President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off-handed remark he made during today's press conference,'' Obama's said in a statement released.

"The president-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share and they had a warm conversation," said President-elect Obama Transition Team Spokesperson Stephanie Cutter.

You gotta love it. The media let Obama say ANY kind of demeaning comment about Hillary--the liberal evilwoman icon. But let him make one crack about the conservative hate=filled ketchup is a veggie school kids should enjoy nightmare and he has to apologize.

Hey! There is NO need to apologize. Just a democrat popping off a few on an old evil Republican. The Hollywood crowd, in their political brilliance do it all of the time. IF this was a mistake, it will probably be the only mistake that President-Elect Obama will ever make. Don't worry about it.

It's not so much he said it after his apparently sanctimonious speech about wanting to be everybody's President. Rather, it showed a certain lack of character to take a slap at an 87 year old woman in poor health just days after his own grandmother died.

I want to give Obama a chance because he will be the leader of the free world soon. This is not the way to start with sarcastic remarks of President Regan wife, Nancy. During the last twenty year, Will attend Rev. Wright church of hate, was there every a sermon, do on to other as you would have them do on to you. Please President elect Obama leave the Chicago thug type politics in Chicago.

Ripping on an old, bed-ridden woman. "Change We Can Believe In". Sounds like the same ole left wing nut job we came to know.

Meanwhile, as the economy sinks (thanks Dems), our press focuses on the "first mutt".

Wow - this is fun (acting like the left wing nuts during the Bush years).

This was not a big deal on Obama's part. Various news articles were written that Nancy did rely on the occult at times and had flown an astrologer to the WH on occasion. She was a bit freaked after her husband was shot. So what. Others have mentioned this. Its no big deal. Get on with writing about the actual true unemployment rate and how to fix the Bush 'never-trickled-down' economy.

Obama is an Idiot, to make such a comment. It was not funny it was hurtful, yet again we should excuse what he does and says. This country made a huge mistake. Obama is rude and nasty, Obama is not a leader he is a talker a preacher at best. It is written a
(God-like figure) he will fool the masses, and that he has done. But Jim Jones also had many followers and we all know what happened there, back in 1978. Obama has associations with
very questionable people and that's putting it nicely.

This unthinking comment shows his lack of respect for a former president's wife. You think before you speak...not apologize afterwards. Kind of the same lack of respect he showed as he gave a high 5 to his wife as they walked off the stage Tues night an insult to the other candidate. GROW UP.

Get a grip Trey. We gave Bush plenty of honeymoon and he blew it in Iraq. And over and over again. Be small if you like. The remark by Obama really didn't require an apology, but he's a gracious man. And also referred to himeself as a "mutt" a few minutes later. Let's allow ourselves to have a sense of humor.

Would give Obam an "F" on this one as oone blogger mentioned "Lack of Respect"

I believe the comment highlighted the degree of Obamas grandiosity and narcissism. He devalues others to address his insecurities. He made fun of her to show the public that he is not so silly eg. see how smart and rational I am? This is what narcissists do. I hope in the future we can elect people raised by both parents. Growing up with no father is traumatic and leaves empty holes in a persons soul. I feel bad that this happened to him as a child but can't we look for grounded and highly functional candidates on both an intellectual and emotional level?

you all need to relax - the comment about Nancy Regan was I am sorry but very funny - why is it that republicans are so easy offended - get a grip - prehaps why the GOP got slammed at the polls - for being out of touch.

Wah, wah, wah....stop whining republicans. as the saying goes 'you are living in the PAST, MAN..'

Obama's thoughtless remark should raise the awareness of what kind of man he really is. Not only is Nancy Reagan old and ill, she is the person who cared for Ronald Reagan for years.
Remember the Reagan funeral? Nancy was applauded as she walked down Constitution Avenue.

Not only was Obama's comment casually disrespectful, it was factually incorrect. Nancy Reagan had merely used a horoscope to check a meeting time. It was Hillary Clinton who tried to commune with her dead heroine Eleanor Roosevelt. Obama is an intelligent guy. I trust that he has learned that every word from a president's mouth will be examined, just as he parsed the words of W for error and failure. I thought that it was to his credit to make the kind gesture of calling Nancy Reagan.

why is it that when a democrat reads their horoscope, or sees a psychic, they are a pinko-liberal-hippie wannabe, but when a crazy old republican does it, they are adored, and anyone who raises a brow is admonished?

Maybe Nancy Reagan is a pinko liberal hippy wannabe, too. Why apologize for making an astute observation?

President Obama is a JOKE!

Shame on you Obama! And Im sure we will have many more reasons to say this over again in the next 4 and maybe 8 yrs. And shame on your wife for it taking until the year 2008 for her to become proud to be an American! You 2 need need to learn to watch your words because we are.

Give me a break-we had 8 yrs of a Bafoon Leader-making uniteligible remarks he didn't understand & couldn't pronounce. Nancy was a psychic dingbat=whispering in Ronalds ear for years. Get over it..

I don't know why people seem to be upset at this. Obama answered off-the-cuff. It isn't fair that he should be expected to be articulate and thoughtful without his teleprompter. After all, the media treats him like the Hollywood star he thinks he is and we all know actors need their lines. He shouldn't be put into situations where intelligence, accuracy and truthfulness are expected to part of his communication -- not without a teleprompter or notes or someone to whisper into his ear,,,, or something....

is Nancy a holy person, and what about all the people who inslut Obama even before he become a president ? and blame him for this joke, a president shouldn't joke about ex president ? but what about Bush bad jokes about whole nations and his crimes against humanity why no body ever blame him ?

That's hypocrite attitue You don't care about offending millions of people or even killing them by ( (Regan, Bush F&S ...), but you stand against someone who say something about thoses old snobish republican.

C'mon people get over it I'm sure ronny is having a good laugh at that it just shows you how the conservatives are going to tear everything apart and try to undermine everything Mr. Obama says this still is a free country and it was a nice gesture on his part to make sure she didnt take it too seriously.

It is a real shame that the public has been lied to and taken advantage of by this President. His remarks about Nancy Regan, his rediculous "bailout" package that any first year economics student can see wont work, and his Socialist plans for big Government spending, gun control, National health care, etc., etc., are absolutely the opposite of what the greatest President who lived (Ronald Regan) did to fix the disaster created by his former Democratic President, Jimmy Carter. Our economy and our freedom have been eroding ever since the Clintons took office and Obama will undoubtedly put an end to freedom as we've known it if we let him.
Wake up people before it's too late.

Obama is a moran. He is ruining the country. Thanks to the major and minor news media, we will never hear about most of his off handed stupid statements like we would have for similar mistakes by Bush, et.al. Where is Leno and the other late night gang kicking Obama's butt like they did Bush. Totally unfair and biased. We are in big trouble and the Democrats are giving the country away. Spread my work ethic, not my money.
