Palin didn't know Africa's a continent: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Frank James

Perhaps we need a "No Governor Left Behind" program for Gov. Sarah Palin who evidently is about as clueless as many observers thought.

Today, Fox News Channel's Carl Cameron told anchor Shepherd Smith that a source or sources within the McCain campaign told him that Palin didn't know Africa is a continent. He was sworn to secrecy by his source/sources until after the election.

Let that sink in for a second. A U.S. governor didn't know that Africa is a continent.

Here's a transcript of the video clip:

Smith: Now that the election is over, Carl, tell us more about those reports of infighting between Palin and McCain staffers.

Cameron: I wish I could have told you more at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election. There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lack the degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency. We're told by folks that she didn't know what countries that were in NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, that being the Canada, the US, and Mexico. We're told she didn't understand that Africa was a continent rather than a country just in itself ... a whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability. She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled.....was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went. She didn't accept preparation for that interview when the aides say that that was part of the problem. And that there were times that she was hard to control emotionally there's talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings...

This is the woman who is supposed to be an energy expert? I'm kind of doubting that now since Nigeria is a major oil-producing NATION. Did she think Nigeria was a county of this Africa country?

Cameron also reports that this woman who is supposedly a Canada expert because her state abuts our neighbor to the north didn't know the nations in NAFTA.

Prediction. Palin won't be on another Republican presidential ticket. This latest revelation, alongside all the rest that we learned about her since the Republican convention, seals the deal.

Also, each new disclosure like this just makes you scratch your head and ask for the umpteenth time and ask: "What was John McCain thinking?"

By the way, someone needs to tell Cameron that "knowledgeability," like drinkability, isn't a word.

------------------------------------

Update: Commenters have noted with undisguised relish that "knowledgeability" and "drinkability" are indeed words that can be found in the Merriam-Webster.com. Well, they shouldn't be words. Clearly, lexicographers were far too permissive in letting these monstrosities into the English language. But I'll admit, grudgingly, that I was wrong on those two particulars.

OMG! I said while sitting in the outhouse and tearing a piece off the constitution.

Are you people for real? No really? You have to kidding me. A “source or sources.” How about the kid who sits in front of me in class past a note saying Palin is stinky. Way past shameful.

Can you really be this dumb, Frank? This is from someone, probably a Romney supporter, who is trying to trash Palin and knows the media will print anything negative about her, no matter how absurd. The same interview said that Palin didn't know the difference between local, state and federal government. She was a mayor and is governor. How believable is this Frank? When it comes to trashing Palin, do you have any critical thinking skills?

Fox--arm of GOP--is throwing Palin to the wolves in order to find an excuse for McCain's lame campaign. McCain vetted Palin, remember?

"Knowledgeability" and "drinkability" are words:

http://www.google.com/search?q=knowledgeability

Besides, Camron might have just been using the McCain camp's language.

I think before anyone tells Carl Cameron anything maybe they should inform Frank James, that according to Merriam Webster, knowledgeability IS a word

I do not feel sorry for Sarah Palin, as I feel she is a mean-spirited person who does not care that she is ignorant. However, this is a CLASSIC status degradation ceremony. Isolate the 'bad apple' in the group (the Repugnican Party) and show how the apple doesn't meet the group's standards. Observe the punishment (in this case the humiliation of revealing material about her) and reaffirm that 'the group' remains integral now that the bad apple is swept away.

I find this pretty funny, but you should actually look up a word before you claim it isn't a word.

Take this with a grain of salt. This is the unofficial start of the 2012 campaign. Staffers who back candidates like Romney and others are trying to knock Palin off early because they are afraid of her popularity with the conservative base.

Well, Joe Biden didn't know Harry Truman was President during the last great depression or that the TV was invented yet, but you think he's qualified to be Vice President. Please keep you reporting fair and unbiased.

knowledgeability is a word. It's in the dictionary. See

drinkability is a word. It's in the dictionary. See

While the right may not believe in abortion, they will eat their own.

Harry Truman was President during the Great Depression? Are you counting the war years as part of the Depression?

It''s great to know that I can always come here to read intelligent commentary... from the comments, if not from Frank James.

It might be worth pointing out that, at the same time as Palin supposedly doesn't know the countries in NAFTA, BHO supports a Bush trade scheme known as "NAFTA+" that might be a precursor to joining the three countries. See #18 on this list for the details:

"I do not feel sorry for Sarah Palin, as I feel she is a mean-spirited person who does not care that she is ignorant."

Probably the most ignorant comment one could make. Nice thought process hypocrite.

I guess Dan Quayle probably feels less embarrassed knowing he probably knows more about the outside world than Failin' Palin does.

John, Harry Truman was the pres. during the last great depression? Um, FDR?

I believe that fox news is not the most credible news network around, but i also believe that Palin could be that ignorant. I base this on what i have seen of her spreading lies about Obama and saying things that are totally ridiculous, like she does not believe the worlds climate is being changed by human activity.

I have also read that she wanted to stop fruit fly research because it is ‘a waste of time and money’, yet it is the forefront of discoveries for human defects, diseases and other genetic problems (and her child has downer syndrome - wouldnt she want a cure or to know more about it?).

Sorry, but that is my opinion - she is dumber than a box of rocks

I scribbled these thoughts shortly after Sarah was picked....Guess now is the time to say..."I Told Ya So"

........

Is this the transparency we are to believe in? The only transparency Sistah Sarah is interested in is a glass ceiling. Not the one Hillary taught us to know and love. This is a ceiling of her own design. One that is self serving. It's only purpose is to be the launching pad for Sarah Georgette palin's legacy.

What McSarah doesn't realize is, She is being used. She is of no more import than the 18 million "pawns" they hope to attract by making her the hood ornament on the Flip Flop Express.

Sarah was a big deal in Wasilla. Not so in Sin City. A barracuda is out of it's league when surrounded by Great White Sharks. Now, They may allow her to think she is one of them, as long as she is stirring up the water and directing prey into their jaws.... But when her mission is accomplished, she will become a midnight snack.

Right. There are two or three levels of hearsay involved in this story, it could well have come from one an angry McCain campaign aide with an axe to grind - and all of you are gullible enough to take it as true? Can I interest any of you in some cheap houseboats in Suisun Bay?

Uh huh. Sure, Frank. We believe that sources just like you do. Of course Sarah Palin is a drooling illiterate shoe throwing maniac. Couldn't be self-serving staffers are trying to cover their own incompetence. Let's see who those "sources" are. Couldn't be Romney staffers who were absorbed into McCain's campaign who are now trying to dampen Palin's chances in 2012. Nah. You must be right, Frank. Palin really is dumb - she's just a girl, after all.

What the bid deal- Obama didn't know how many state were in the USA-

Apparently one of the problems of the Palin selection was that over time it led to the McCain campaign staff getting split into feuding Pro Palin and Anti Palin factions. This got to the point that Randy Scheunemann, McCain's long time foriegn policy advisor (and sleazy lobbyist with huge conflicts of interest) was fired a few days before the election for leaking things about some of the Anti- Palin staffers to the media that were considered "trashing" them.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/05/soruces-mccain-aide-fired-for-trashing-staff/

This appears to be another salvo in that internal war.

It's funny what the right chooses to believe and what not to believe. Faux News who ran the 24/7 anti-Obama fest, fed the rabid all the association garbage that they feasted on for 2 years. Now Fairly Unbalanced runs a story on Palin and they growl and howl at The Swamp. They parrot Faux like their bible but it seems this story on Palin isn't "canonical".

Bemused....for someone who complained day in and day out about Obamas presumable playing of the race card, you sure have no problem playing the sexist card day in and day out. I find no gender in the word "unqualified".

Don't dare criticize a woman,Frank, or Bemused will get you; the last remaining PUMA is still bitter. I'm no defender of Sarah Palin, but the sniping coming out of the McCain campaign staff is amusing, and further evidence of a mistaken VP pick.

This article was written by Frank James, who in his previous article proclaimed that the Goldwater-Johnson presidential election was "1964 years ago."

Even if you take this report with a grain of salt, the evidence against Sarah Palin's political intelligence has become a salt mine. Lack of knowledge on any major US Supreme Court decision besides Roe v. Wade, lack of knowledge on Bush's foreign policies (and she's in the Republican party) and lack of knowledge of major bills worked on by the guy that picked her as her running mate says a few things about her. Either she's a "maverick" and refused help from those in the know before her interviews, she was a poor study or a combination of both. I don't blame her though, McCain picked her and he should have known what he was getting himself into. I couldn't tell you who the current Secretary of State is, who the Ambassador to Lithuania is or even two of the former countries of the USSR were before they broke away, but I'd still run for VP if offered the job. Who wouldn't?

Inky, Please post a link when throwing mud, otherwise you look uneducated. Also, are you talking states and territories, or just states, as I think the whole thing is a mess myself anyways.

Is FOX trying to realign itself??
***
Now let's make this as clear as possible.
1. Truman was not pres. during the Great Depression.
2. By 1933 when FDR was sworn in the Great Depression was already at it worst point. He was literally starting at the bottom.
3. The first practical TV was build in 1929, but due to the Depression and WWII, national priorities delayed its widspread use until the late 40s.
The 1936 Olympic Munich games were broadcast on TV.

Who wouldn't run for VP if picked? I wouldn't. If she didn't know that she would be scrutinized and picked apart by the media, then she has been asleep for at least the last 40 years. If I were put in that situation, I would truly do my best to study up so that I didn't embarrass myself and my party. Her ego was so large and the party so lame that they thought all the gosh darns and golly gees would cover the fact that she was dumber than a bowl of hair.

The sharks are attacking now, and this will go on for a long time. Palin has been feeding them blood-red meat and now they turn on the feeder. Classic!! The truth will always out itself!!!

I voted Obama but I don't believe this. I think Fox is throwing Palin under the bus in anticipation of 2012. Wow - that really stinks.

Yes, it is unfair that there seems to be a move to put all the blame for McCain's loss on Palin, but this woman has not exactly given anyone reason to think that she would know that Africa is not a country. She represents all that is anti-intellectual about the religious right. Want books banned? That is OK with Palin, and it is also fine to fire any librarian who stands in your path to the bonfire. Want to teach kids about evolution? No, no, no. Despite no credible proof that creationism can be remotely considered a science the schools should teach this mythology as though it is on the same footing as established and vetted science. Sex education and birth control information? Just say "no" kids! Learn on the street! Oh, and getting pregnant as a teenager, dropping out of school and marrying way too young are just nice little benefits that will help you be the best you can be. Ignorance rules in the domain of the religious right! AND this is why as long as people like Sarah Palin are representing the Republican Party then I will NEVER vote Republican.

Gentlemen,
I will stop with my charges of sexism as soon as Frank James and his fellow media misogynists recognize that sexism is as unacceptable as racism. I will stop with my charges as soon as Obama, his supporters and the media drop the charge that any disagreement with Obama is racist. Bitter? Only because sexism remains an acceptable, enjoyable part of American life and politics. I've rejoiced that we have the maturity to look beyond race in choosing a leader. Yet I am saddened that women will always have to work twice as hard as men of any color, and still face a glass ceiling. I know the gloating Obama supporters will never recognize this. But I will not stop calling it out. Have a nice day.

Still not done Sarah bashing, huh? Real classy.

Fox isn't going to throw Palin under the bus because they pushed the McCain line that his campaign had vetted her. Instead, I predict Fox will hire Palin as a newsreader/talking head because she appeals directly to Fox's core viewership.

As a person who voted for Obama, I can only hope that Palin runs for President in 2012. The entertainment value was priceless. Now if we could just get Karl Rove to plan the next campaign....

A "source or sources" inside the Chicago Tribune told a friend of mine, who told me, that Frank James believes Chicago is the capitol of Wisconsin.

See how easy it is to smear someone by making up quotes from anonymous sources?

To all the people grumbling about "anonymous sources" and the validity thereof:

Sarah Palin couldn't even name a SINGLE NEWSPAPER that she reads, after claiming to read many every day.

She couldn't string a single, coherent sentence together in any discussion that wasn't written for her by the campaign's PR staff.

We don't need anonymous or confirmed sources to point out her appalling lack of intelligence. She did it herself, every time she opened her mouth.

So Frank James reports on a story that appeared on Fox News that shows how ignorant Sarah Palin is is considered "sexist" to you? She should not get a free pass because of her gender.

BC:
Why not? Obama got a free pass because of his race.Even as a democrat, I have to admit that he won the dem.nom. because of the large sums of money that he generated. Plus, no one in the press vetted him because they didn't want to be considered racist for asking questions. His resume, like Palins, very thin. The press really mistreated her. Your candidate won, be happy. Or maybe go outside and get some fresh air for once. Maybe then you'll see things more clearly.

Sorry no links-
The statement is worded to catch your eye and it worked-

Go Sarah 2012-

Nobody in the media reported unbiased information about McCain/Palin. They were out to get them from the beginning. How unfair....this election was a huge disappointment. American journalism has hit rock bottom!

Yes indeed......those blacks....if I only had it so easy. If they could only walk a mile in a white mans shoes...they would understand how hard it is for us.

Somehow I don't have a hard time believing this about Palin. She seems to have a focus of laser-like intensity on her own ambition, which probably doesn't allow much time for learning, although one has to wonder about the quality of education in Alaska

bill r.
I didn't say blacks had it easy. I said the press and late nite comics had to tip toe around obama, to NOT be accused of being racist. What are you some old, stoned hippie? I mean, what world are you living in? We just elected a black man president? What does that tell you about how far America has come? Blacks are given a wonderful shot at success, at the American dream. You need to stop the white guilt business, it's getting old. Seriously.

em....Let me try this again since my first post must have been"over the top". Funny how you see empathy as guilt. I guess if being the "old hippie" means I remember the marches and the water cannons and night sticks, I guess you're right. If being the "old hippie" means being around in 1964, a short 44 years ago, when "segregation" legally ended, I guess you're right. If I'm the "old hippie" I guess you're one of those young people who have figured out the world in your short lifetime. Living here in the south and being as "old" as I am, I didn't know when people used the "N" word it was actually a good thing. But congratulations on you and the younger generation that have healed the hundreds of years of slavery in just a short 44 years. Bravo!

ps..After reading your post.....I doubt "we" elected a black president.

No one got a free pass with a voter turnout like we had this year.

Now, which team are you going to hire ?

I agree wholeheartedly with Frank, "knowledgeability" and "drinkability" SHOULD not be words, and if they are, try not to use them please....

Unfortunately, Sarah Palin not knowing Africa is a continent nor being unable to name the NAFTA partners, just goes to re-enforce how much of the world sees a large part of America - insular, parochial, and neither knows nor cares about people or events beyond its borders.

Why do hit BBC comedy series have to be re-made for the American audience? Why do Australian movies have to be made in with American accents to get an American audience?

Eight years ago you elected a president who, at that time, had not set foot outside the United States. That speaks volumes.

Congratulations America on electing Barack Obama. It's one small step on the journey to the rest of the world perceiving you as world citizens

I'd be a lot more skeptical about these unnamed source comments if Palin herself had not appeared so ignorant in her interviews--and it wasnt just a slip of the tongue here or there, for which I'd give her the benefit of the doubt. This is the kind of stuff one could expect from someone who cannot even name one thing they read to keep informed.

Member of the G O P -- Grand Old Party, indeed. I sincerely hope this information can be recalled in 2012. When did anti-intellectualism become posh?

MICHELLE OBAMA 2016

What a bunch of idiots. "Anonymous sources" is not where you get a real news story, but where gossip columnists and "newspapers" such as The Star and The Enquirer get their sensationalistic stories.

These anonymous sources are just jockeying for their future positions on future Republican campaigns. I hope not one of these "anonymous sources" ever works in Washington again. They're the ones who ran a sloppy campaign. Now they come up with this silliness to make Governor Palin a scapegoat.

Losers, the whole lot, as are the ones who repeat this drivel.
