It's the morning after one of the most memorable days in American history and we're still too close to it to have as much perspective as we would like.

President-elect Obama. It still seems unreal to many of us that the nation will have a president who is African-American come January 20.

But the realities of what Obama faces are daunting: an economy in recession, two wars, an existential terrorist threat, an energy crisis, global warming, belligerent nation states with leaders who will indeed test him, a deeply divided nation.

Obama knows many of the details of what he faces. But so much is unknowable.

We can only hope that he's the right leader for the moment because many Americans have the sense that we have to get the next four years mostly right or face the real prospect of becoming a superpower in the declining phase of its trajectory.

Don Fitzgerald: you've been one of Senator Obama's BIGGEST supporters. Enjoy the victory!!! MUD SLINGING, IN THE END, DID NOT WORK!!!! I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MORE COMPOSED, COOL, SINCERE, AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE!!!! (LIVING IN IOWA, I SAW AND HEARD HIM 4 TIMES.) BUT THE THING THAT REALLY GOT TO ME WAS THE WAY THAT AFTER HE SAID SOMETHING HE WOULD HAVE SUCH A SINCERE LOOK ON HIS FACE AND IN HIS EYES. HE DIDN'T JUST FLING WORDS AROUND, HE THOUGHT DEEPLY BEFORE HE SPOKE. HE REALLY DOES REMIND ME OF KENNEDY. GOD BLESS YOU, SENATOR OBAMA AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY!!! THE SADDEST THING WAS THAT HIS GRANDMA WASN'T HERE BUT I HOPE SHE WAS STILL ABLE TO SEE IT, ALONG WITH HIS MOTHER AND GRANDPA!!!!

Change- When does it start_

Everyone all together now say....President Obama.

Doesn't that feel good to say?

Bruce, Terry, John D, heartburn, John W, Jeff, Bemused, keep practicing you'll get the hang of it.

I wonder how long it will take Jeff/Bill to return to the Swamp...and what name will he use?

Paolo, Jerry White in Springfield - you are officially irrelevant.

Hussein wins!!!!!!!!!

From last nights speech--
"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term....."
Like a friend mention,he already try to weasel out of his CHANGE-

It is morning in America again.

It is a great day for America. She has shown her lovely face, after 8 years of her uglier side !!
President-elect Barack Obama and Vice-President-elect Joseph Biden can cherish the moment, briefly. There is much to do, if America returns to her former self, liberty-lover and prosperous. Give these two good Americans a chance, it will be good for all of us. As Senator McCain stated last night: " he is our president, he is our commander-in-chief " and I hope we can all say that !! That is how America returns to her promise to all of her citizens. As President Kennedy once said : " Ask not what your country can do for you, but what, you can do for your country. " We are one nation and I hope we can unify, and act as one people.
Good Luck, President-elect Obama and America, a job well done !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

An inspirational night and speech. Hope wins out over division.

I feel motivated, excited, fearless, wonderful, and above all- Proud to be an American!

We made the best choice, america!!!

To those in the GOP who keep slaming Obama, I'm still waiting for one of Bushes promises, and don't throw that pittance of a few hundred dollar tax rebate he gave us. He's left us in debt up to our eyeballs, two wars, one of which he started in the name of terrorism, thier buddies in the oil industry and Haliburton (Cheney's former employer) have made billions off the tax payers, a once proud nation in shambles and now he and Cheney continue to defile the Constitution in the last days. PLEASE...use your head! Stop this Right Wing Left Wing garbage. It doesn’t hurt to read all of the information out there (conservative and liberal) listen to all of the candidates and make an educated decision once in a while. The folks who change the election sit in the middle (Independents and party moderates). The far radical right turned off many GOP moderates who definitely don’t lean left, but understand that President-elect Obama will sit down with a level head and listen to his staff, generals and other experts to make the best decision. No President changes things over night, and the last President drove this once proud country into the ground. We the people need someone to unite us not divide us like the GOP ticket who were dropping innuendos and labeling Obama a socialist, terrorist, etc. This applies to not only American’s but everyone on the planet. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld drove wedges between our allies, that even Colin Powell couldn’t fix, that is why he left. This isn’t the United States of Republicans or Democrats…it’s the United States of America. Be an American first. (By the way, why is the GOP says every Dem running for President is the most liberal Dem out there? Do they change over night? Pass the torch? I'm just currious where they get this tired old reteric.)

I support Obama, but get ready for Internet Tax's with the Dems in place. What makes anyone think this guy can change anything. Their all the same.

I am genuinely proud of my country- we continue to be able to show the world that our political system is head and shoulders above anyone else's. (despite the flawed view that our reputation has been damagedP)

I have never been a supporter of Obama's - but I do respect the man and the office of the president. I am relieved that it appears that we have been able to elect our first african-american president on the merits of his supporter's belief in his ability to lead and then judging him "... by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin..."

The people have spoken- Obama is my president.

Congratulations to him-an amazing accomplishment - now for the hard part..

Heartburn, that was a most gracious post. Thank you!

Heartburn.....you're a good man!

Heartburn, Kudos on having the guts and class to come out and post as you did today.

heartburn,
You just relieved my,,, heartburn.
Let's hope the country can now move forward together.

Well stated, " heartburn " ! You have proven yourself, to be a good adversary in the trenches of opinion and you have proven yourself to be a good American, as to the election's outcome. We sure are lucky to be Americans !
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Yes Heartburn, what a classy post. I must say, that you have impressed me as one of the few Republicans that could actually state the facts and not get bogged down in all the internet rumors. I also think McCain's speach was good hearted too. I just wish he could've put a muffler on the crowd.

Hey, JT:
.
I am perfectly capable of saying "President Obama" without gagging. See? I just wrote it. Want to see it again? President Obama. How's that? What's more, had you been paying any attention, you might have noticed that I have been predicting Obama's victory for some time now.
.
I hope he does well. I really do - because it is in our collective best interests for him to succeed.
.
However, the fact that I wish him success doesn't mean he gets a free pass, and it doesn't make me any less skeptical of his political philosophy or abilities. "President" is the title of his new job. He must still honestly and diligently perform the job for which the American People hired him. If not, he can be fired in four years, or even sooner under some circumstances. Despite his efforts and good intentions, he must also have his critics to keep him honest. History has shown that rulers without critics are dangerous. Duh'bya even proved that leaders WITH critics can still be dangerous. Thus, any suggestion that I give up my voice in the loyal opposition is as ludicrous as the suggestion that you should give Duh'bya a pass on his last eight years in office. To paraphrase Winston Churchill: This is not the end or even the beginning of the end. It is only the end of the beginning.

We can only hope that he's the right leader for the moment because many Americans have the sense that we have to get the next four years mostly right or face the real prospect of becoming a superpower in the declining phase of its trajectory.

Your thoughts? ~ F.J.

I too, acknowledge the great Obama's great political victory. But what does F.J., mean by we can only "hope that ..." ? The fans of the great Obama are here, and the non-acolytes have been told the entire summer that this is that special guy with that special judgement to do all those special things, just things, righteous things, and things of great merit. Now ya craw-fishin'. Django confused.

Second, "... a superpower in the declining phase of its trajectory." democrats, I am dead serious. WAS THIS NOT WHAT THIS ELECTION WAS ABOUT, AT LEAST IN SOME PART??? Your side, your party, your philosophy, your main man WON its case with the American people. " A Superpower In The Declining Phase Of Its Trajectory" - THAT IS THE ARGUMENT THAT YOU HAVE WON. YOU WON. By a big margin, YOU WON.

At this point in the continuum, this question makes no sense to even entertain. That is what you want and YOU HAVE WON! Why and for what purpose should America be any better than France, Chad, Mongolia, or any other place. What am I not getting here??? This argument has been settled, and YOU WON!

Again, congratulations to the great Obama. You do know that you Won!

History was made last night indeed - but the best thing is to see hope in people's eyes again...

Never have been this excited by an election--Hope at last--Hope at last--Thank God we have Hope at last!!!!!!!! You have so many ready to follow--I know you are ready to lead. God bless and keep you and your family. Congratulations and very best wishes!!!!!!!!!!! Mr Reagan tore down one wall--I wish you all good luck in tearing down this one!!!!!!!!!!!

... "I dream of a day when a man will not be judged by the color of his skin but by the strength of his character"...

11/4/08 is the most prolific, historic statement that was ever made by the well intended majority of the American people.

I've always been glad to be an American. Today, I am truly proud to be an American.

Michael Love, Greenbrier, Arkansas, USA!!!

Well C Morris, Bill R, JT and even you FITZ , your canidate has won a hard fought battle. For the sake of the country, I wish Obama the absolute best, but now comes the work.

As always, when I see Obama do something I disagree with, I will state is with facts supporting me (and maybe a little humor). The good debates will continue.

Eh, I don't think the election involved winning any such esoteric argument. My take is that the results were caused by the "The Nixon Effect" - that played out during the 1976 election. If you recall, people were sore that Nixon escaped impeachment and prosecution, and they were depressed over the state of the economy. They blamed Ford for pardoning Nixon and allowing the economy to sag (as if he really had a say in the latter). No one should underestimate the depressing effect of the economic downturn either. There have been many oceanic power shifts in this country and elsewhere in response to similar economic crises. Hence, voters were willing to take anything that wasn't Republican, which is why Jimmy Carter defeated Ford.
.
Here, too, people are fed up with George W. Bush and they blamed McCain for being complicit in his policies. Indeed, Bush and company's neo-con doctrines represented such a departure from orthodox Republican conservatism that they lost the support and confidence of a substantial part of even their own conservative base. McCain, for his part, neither tried nor succeeded in ridding himself of the "McBush" label, and he had his own issues with the conservative base. (He could have done a better job in the campaign too.) In addition, the economy is in the tank once again. Just as in 1976, it was the combination of a serious economic slump and close association with an unpopular president that created the centrifugal momentum to cast the Republican Party from the center to the fringes. Obama and the rest of the Democrats won because they only needed to keep from shooting themselves in the foot. And, no, I suppose it didn't hurt that Obama brought a level of enthusiasm to the contest that McCain didn't or couldn't match.

President-elect Obama
Dear Sir, For a truly transformational Goverment, my advice is to leave
Vice-President-elect Biden in the Senate & make him Prime Minister,
after all he is paid by the Senate & President there pro tem.
Also, as the G7 counterparts of Secs Peters & Paulson will tell you,
not debating their portfolios every week in the Congress leaves them @ a very distinct disadvantage when dealing with them, because they all do!
Therefore, please transform your Cabinet by making up its members from
the Congress & leaving them there to debate their portfolios & engage in question time. Of course, their bureaucratic operational deputies can be drawn from the vast pool of talent avaiable to you across America.
All best wishes,
Yours faithfully, Prof M H settelen, B.Sc.(Eng.), MBA(Wharton)

The day I heard president-elect Obama’s voice on TV delivering speech for election campaign I said, oh my God! a great New Leader of the World is born. But I was lamenting to my wife, and friends, saying that he is born at a wrong time, and in a wrong place, given the fact of his African link. American people, mostly white, are yet ready to elect a black President gifted with outstanding knowledge and charisma. But I had slight hope that he would, probably, win thanks to GOP’s mishandling of the economy that caused melting down of the world financial market let alone the Wall Street. And it happened. Americans clocked back the year 2060 and beyond in the present time by voting Obama as their President. That is America!

The news story started - President Elect Obama - the first black African American....
Can't President Elect Obama just be that - period. Is the media (news, radio, blogs) forever and ever going to attach the ethinicity/color tag after his name? They did/do not refer to other candidates, like John McCain as White American. This continues the racial divisity, that I thought we were past. Can't we all just be referred to as Americans. We need to stop putting groups into little boxes. Maybe that's where America's divisity came into play, when we started color coding/ethnic grouping our population in every instance. I don't hear much about Hispanic/Americans or French/Americans or Indian/Americans, Jewish/Americans, so for our new Commander, remove the color tag, or refer politically correctly to his "tag" as white/black American, since he is 1/2 white. Or perhaps better just President Elect Obama.

congratulations president obama. I wish you the best as our new president. IT won't be easy because you have a big mess to clean up. JUST do your the best that you can. YOU did not create this mess. WE have confidence in you thatyou will get america back on track.

How awesome it was to see the whole world, minus Russia, rejoicing with us as we celebrated the victory of our new president. A beautiful foreshaodw of an ultimate tearing down of every wall dividing the human race. so much joy and hope displayed, can you imagine when the ultimate barrier breaker comes, how much more joy!
