Sarah Palin didn't ask for the clothes.
Sarah Palin knows Africa is a continent.
Sarah Palin, the first-term governor of Alaska and losing Republican nominee for vice president, says so, in an interview with FOX News Channel's Greta Van Susteren airing tonight at 10 pm EST.
In FOX's On the Record, taped in Alaska, Palin attempts to refute stories that disgruntled members of the McCain-Palin campaign have been spreading about she and her family going on a shopping spree for the $150,000 in clothing that the Republican National Committee bought for them, or the contention that she didn't know from countries when it came to Africa and the nations that are parties to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
"I did not order the clothes,'' Palin tells Van Susteren. "Did not ask for the clothes...
"And never, ever did I talk about, well, gee, is (Africa) a country or is it a continent.''
Asked about the election, Palin says, "At the end of the day, American voters spoke.'' Asked about her own intentions for 2012: "I can't predict what's going to happen a day from now, much less four years from now.''
In an extensive interview, Palin discusses this and more, with some excerpts here, courtesy of FOX:
" I would have been happy to have worn my own clothes from day one,'' Palin says. "But that is kind of an odd issue, an odd campaign issue as things were wrapping up there as to who ordered what and who demanded what."
"I haven't really heard how all of that evolved, and hadn't really pursued it until we started getting criticized for supposedly asking for all of these clothes, my family and me. And still don't have all of the answers. But it just, at this point, especially seems so irrelevant unless the criticism continues in regards to my family or me demanding anything.... It just seems like such an irrelevant issue when you consider what is going on in the world today.''
On Africa: "So we discussed what was going on in Africa. And never, ever did I talk about, well, gee, is it a country or is it a continent. I just don't know about this issue. So I don't know how they took our one discussion on Africa and turned that into what they turned it into.
"I don't know, because I remember the discussion about Africa, my concern has been the atrocities there in Darfur and the relevance to me with that issue, as we spoke about Africa and some of the countries there that were kind of the people succumbing to the dictators and the corruption of some collapsed governments on the continent, the relevance was Alaska's investment in Darfur with some of our permanent fund dollars, I wanted to make sure that that didn't happen anymore."
On NAFTA: "I remember that discussion, but there was never a question about, well, who are the participants in NAFTA? So for my discussion there to be spun into something that it was not and then being broadcast on national television, again, based on anonymous sources, that's been another puzzling thing to me...
"Along those same lines, of course, was the criticism that supposedly I didn't know who the participants in NAFTA were. I remember, again, having a discussion about NAFTA and how Alaska, again, being relevant to the discussion with the trade that we have with Canada being our next door neighbors, how important it was that we continue NAFTA and having good relations with Mexico and with Canada, and wanting to know what Barack Obama meant by saying that he would want to, perhaps, unilaterally get in there and renegotiate NAFTA."
On the election: "At the end of the day, American voters spoke. It's the will of the people that it was not our time and our message was not the message of change that the majority of voters wanted. So be it... Now, OK, that said, chapter's closed now. And now let me, let John McCain do all that we can along with our supporters to help unite the nation and progress under a new administration."
On 2012: "I can't predict what's going to happen. I can't predict what's going to happen a day from now, much less four years from now...
"You know, I have -- faith is a very big part of my life. And putting my life in my creator's hands -- this is what I always do. I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is. Even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

Arnie from California is looking to get the Constitution changed so that foreign born US citizens can run for the Presidency. Obama is a great believer in equal rights and he now has the power to make such amends in the constitution should the rest of government agree to it.
If Obama makes those changes so that US citizens like Arnie can run and Palin has to run against him, I am not sure she would be in as a candidate, VP or otherwise.
Putting aside all the rumours, I think that voters outside of the extreme right-wing core of the Republicans find Palin's views on some things difficult to swallow (she stated herself on camera that she thinks rape victims should not be allowed a choice if they find themselves pregnant which most people find rather harsh).
Palin also seems a bit too divisive on the national front - it is one thing to put down your opponent but quite another to put down large sections of the American people to the point where you have a "them and us" mentality.
I don't think the GOP party will have her back again for those reasons - she seemed to really alienate a lot of the independent voters.
I can't vote in the US but if I could, I would not for Palin for the reasons stated above.

Sarah Palin is much too extreme in her opinions about birth control and many other issues to ever again be chosen as a candidate for national office.

Sarah Palin. I Guess you can understand how hurtful to say negative things about people that is not true so the World can turn against them. Election over now and you all by yourself. Get over it. Look like you got used!!! What goes around comes around.

One of the most critical skills of a leader is being an articulate public speaker. Sarah Palin, on the other hand, is incapable of forming a coherent thought about anything. Two thumbs down.

She's a liar who did not recognize the name of Canada's Prime Minister during her prank phone call with Montreal comedians who impersonated President Sarkozy. I would not put it past her to not know Africa is continent. She does those fake "dang gonit" lines during her debates and interviews... and we can all clearly see that is a fake hick accent. She is a fraud and the state of Alaska should find a smarter Governor.

The Republican party will continue to get smaller until it understands that Americans want a social safety net. Period. No American should ever worry that they may not be able to afford food for their children. That's not part of freedom.

Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, John McCain and a 100% of Fox News staff flunk this question on a daily basis.

America is short for United States of America. The country. There is no continent called America.
Is this your best effort at justifying that Palin's confusing between Africa being a continent and a country?

Opps, I guess it got THAT one the leadership of the majority party! I'd take Sarah over Nancy ANY day. Character over caricature. Slightly unpolished over polished clear through the plate and down into pure brass years ago.

She like could have been the like valley gil like VP. I don't question that she got an education, however, to have her daughter and the father to be quit high school because of a baby in this day and age speaks volumes of where her head is at. I hope she is never in an elected national office that would affect me.

In other words, "I plow around." Cuz, you know, whether some supernatural power is opening a door, or if the door just happens to be open, or one imagines its open -- there is no way of knowing.

Palin says clothes were waiting for her when she and the rest of her clan arrived at the convention. And that more were ordered for her. I happen to believe the adviser who said it was "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman-Marcus from coast to coast." Upon entering the national scene, her first whopper was telling Congress "Thanks, but no thanks for that Bridge to Nowhere." She lied about firing the town librarian. She lied about firing the Alaska commissioner because he wouldn't sack her former brother-in-law. To document all the others would take me the rest of the evening. John (Country First) McCain should be ashamed for trying to foist this nitwit on us.

There is another factor I have seen no one mention about the election. Conservatives blame the choice of McCain for losing the election. They wanted someone further to the right. Has it even occurred to them their own party rejected right-wing extremism, which is why McCain was nominated? That if an extreme right-winger had been nominated that the election might not have been as close as it was? I also urge liberals not to be too hard on McCain. I honestly believe he is a decent man that was practically gagging on some of the crap his campaign advisers made him say the last month of the campaign, because they convinced him he had no other way to win. He did even look comfortable trying to be mean and he wasn't good at it. I wouldn't even mind if Obama found a place for him because the right-wing fringe will never allow him to be out front again.

I would like nothing better than to see Sarah Palin re-emerge 4 or 8 years from now with some innate intelligence and the conscience that generally attends intelligence, but she is a buffoon, and by definition, does not possess the intelligence to value intelligence enough to acquire intelligence.
But whenever and wherever we se her, she will be good for a laugh.
Posted by: DGS | November 10, 2008 11:37 PM
I tried to watch this Greta interview but it was just PAINFUL. The woman is a stuttering, incoherent, trivial, repetitive bore. The idea that she could host a tv show for more than one episode is laughable (and run this nation? Oh my God!). She was mildly interesting for a short spell because she was McCain's incomprehensible pick, but she is just truly awful to listen to. The average suburban mom pushing her shopping cart down an aisle would be more compelling to talk to. Go fade away into that Alaska sunset, PLEASE!

This was a very good interview. It is a breath of fresh air to be able to see her in a different light (not filtered by soundbites and other attention getters).
Sarah Palin remains a force to be dealt with. While the GOP regroups, it is looking for leaders. Perhaps, Palin is the type of psychological, positive, individual that the GOP needs right now. However, the current Palin may not be the type of candidate the GOP needs in 2012.
I think she will become more of herself now that she can disassociate with McCain and I think individuals that are critical of her will soften a bit in their criticisms.

Lochnessmonster,
The fact that Sarah Palin's kids made decisions that she or you might not have says little about Sarah Palin. The fact that she remained supportive of a kid that chose a certain path and did not force anything on her or her husband-to-be says a lot about her.
Your guilt by association logic is convincingly lacking in maturity. Perhaps, you will or do have children and they will make bad decisions. Should we then exercise the same logic that you do and conclude that your child's decisions must make you a bad (or stupid) person? In the off chance that you don't have or plan to have children, maybe you'll have a pet that poohs in the neighbor's yard. That would, or course, mean that you must exhibit that same bad trait--I don't think so. Be a little kinder and less rash in your judgments.

Palin is a real woman, with all of her multi-tasking. What a threat that obviously is to some of the foregoing blogsters whose idea of multi-tasking is drinking their lattes without the spoon in them. And by the way, if Swamp is going to continue to quote Palin so directly -- which is fine -- why doesn't it do the same for Obama with all of his grammatical and pronunciation mistakes?

ATTENTION REPUBLICANS: RE: SARAH PALIN
Obviously there has been a HUGE mistake…..
Palin’s Dribble, Weasel Wording, Mush-Mush, Asssss-Backwards speak Cleary demonstrates who carries the Down Syndrome trait in her family, because of this we (the democrats) will allow you to send her back to Wacky-silla without prejudice and select another candidate.
For this consideration the Republicans agree to sell Alaska to Russia (with Palin) and never mention the State of Alaska or her again.
P.S. Why does Palin repeat herself in the same sentence and add extra words that don't belong!! Reading a Quote from her makes me feel like I am in the advanced stages of dyslexia. Does Anyone else have a problem with this? Is there anyone out there from the North Slope who speaks Wacky-silla?

I live in Wasilla, Alaska, only 3 miles away from the Palins, and while I don't know them personally, I know Sarah & Todd better than all of you who have posted messages. I also had an exchange student from Germany living with me, and she went to Wasilla High along with Bristol Palin. Due to my past experiences with Sarah Palin, I can honestly speak up and be a positive reference. Here is some information you won't necessarily find in the news:
I have had interaction with her on both a personal level, and when she was my Mayor several years ago.
On a whim, I sent a letter into the Mayor's office which included a magazine article about a city that became debt-free. When I called the Mayor's office a week later, I had no idea that the city was looking into moving the overcrowded police station, or that Wasilla City Council was undecided on what to do about it. Even though Sarah and I had never met up to that point, she still took my letter, copied it to everyone on city council, and as a result, city council choose to renovate an old bank building instead of constructing a new building, which saved the city a couple million! I even got a thank you letter from Sarah in the mail. Basically, I'm living proof that she listens to people, and gets the job done!
I know where she goes to church, I know lots of the same people she knows, and, I've spoken with her several times. As a result, I have learned that she is a person of integrity, she isn't a liar, and she has been a very hard worker and a genuine server of others in our beautiful state. She blew the whistle on politicians in Alaska that were crossing ethics lines (one was a Democrat, and the other was a Republican), she also worked to raise the bar on ethics standards in Alaska - all of which was reported in Alaska news as very commendable, and a whole bunch of other wonderful things that people have been led to believe and know nothing about as shown by their negative opinions in their message posts - and things that they THINK are facts. People who live outside of Alaska haven't been able to follow Sarah Palin as closely as Alaskans have and so it kind of stings a little for us to just sit and watch people believe the false negative spins that they get fed from the media. For example, one post I read from another website makes makes mention about "that Bridge story and other fictions in her convention speech"...don't you know that Sarah's speech actually did contain all accurate and truthful information? All you have to do is ask a resident from Ketchikan, Alaska to find out about why they needed a bridge. It wasn't a "Bridge to Nowhere" like the national media spinned it. It was a way for Ketchikan to connect to their airport! I was okay with Sarah choosing to put the money into something else that was a much higher priority. However, I got pretty hot mad when the media called it "The Bridge to Nowhere" because their airport is on an island since they don't have enough room in their city for an airport which is tightly nestled between mountains and ocean. They have to pay money to take a ferry in order to get to it, and I have been on bridges across our country for lesser reasons than an airport. Ketchikan residents have been working very hard on that bridge for many years to try to get it passed through. So, why did Sarah "say no to the Bridge to Nowhere"? Because that money was needed for even more important things like for example, energy for our great nation, and all too often leaders have no choice but to make difficult decisions based on order of: priority, balancing the budget, and other people's input/judgements - because leaders can't always do it all. Also, do you know what really happened to the jet plane Sarah mentioned in her speech that she sold in order to save money? She WAS telling the truth because I live up here, and I remember hearing it reported in the news when it happened - because it was so funny - and, it still is! I remember when Alaska news confirmed that she tried to sell it on E-Bay, and when it didn't sell, she sold it to a broker, saving the state lots of money. Also, did you know that most Alaska politicians have to fly from Anchorage to our capitol in Juneau just to get there since there aren't any roads between the two cities, and it's way, too far away to be driving that much distance anyway? Just look at a map. Did you know that several times Alaskans have voted on whether or not we should move our capitol to a different location? Did you know that Sarah found a way to do most of her work in Anchorage (only an hour drive from her house), except when she must be in Juneau, so it doesn't cost so much, which allows her to sell the jet, thereby once again, costing the state even less. This also meant that she didn't need the cook at the Juneau Governor's residence, thereby saving the state more money - this was also reported in Alaska news at the time that it happened, which was also BEFORE she was announced for the VP ticket. Since all these changes saved the state lots of money, the changes were good ones that made sense and served Alaskans well. She also took the power away from big oil companies, and put it in the hands of us - the people! Also, I got a check in the bank from all her hard work! I already knew about all this stuff in Alaska before Sarah was ever announced on the VP ticket - I already knew all the things that Sarah mentioned in her convention speech were all true statements! And, these items were reported in Alaska news before she was ever aware of the possibility of being selected by McCain's campaign.
This kind of proven track record doesn't sound like someone who is flippant with money. So, it's just as someone else's post said on a different website - this "snippy girl gossip" about clothes is very silly and immature. No matter who the celebrity or candidate is, how does someone who needs so many body guards go around to do their own shopping without attracting a large crowd? I thought that people who needed lots of body guards didn't go shopping since it's too dangerous - someone else always does it. And, aren't they too busy working anyway to go shopping? Also, didn't the campaign always know where the Palins were at all times? The accusation is so directly opposite with the Sarah that I have come to know.
Those of us who live in Alaska and in Wasilla and the surrounding areas are so tired of the negative untruthful smears that people across the country have been fed about Sarah, and all of the candidates, that many of us started to tune the national news out over a month ago. For example, when the media reported the size of Wasilla, I finally realized how facts can get spun out of whack. While it's true there are 7,000 people - that's not the whole story! Wasilla is soo spread out! But, city limits are only about 3 - 5 miles in diameter, and the media didn't include all the people living in the surrounding area which is also regarded by residents as being part of Wasilla and they too depend on the city. Nor did the media report that people living within a 25,000 square mile radius also traffic to Wasilla since it is the only city close enough to get what they need - food, clothes, etc. Otherwise, they have to drive an extra hour to Anchorage to get what they need!
Anyway, many Alaskans, like myself, see how much value Sarah has brought to Alaska, and while we were somewhat reluctant with the possibility of having to try to find someone to fill the Governor's shoes who was of Sarah's high quality character, we were also willing and excited at the prospect of sharing her with the rest of the country. Many people have questioned her experience, but what we tend to forget is that our nation has had popular Presidents with substantially less experience than either Palin or Obama. And, many of us figured that since she is so well respected here for all the service she has done for Alaska (opinion polls were 80% earlier this year) , she would also have pretty good ratings across the country. And while it would have been worthwhile and exciting to send her off to the White House, I'm very glad she is home again, and I hope and pray for the very best for her. I really don't think that we have seen the last of Sarah. So, hopefully, the Republican camp will get themselves in gear quickly, and this whole thing will boil over very soon. It appears that the Democrat camp worked together pretty well this time around. And, it looks like the timing of the economy situation helped them out. In any case, we have a new President and VP elect now, and it's time to put the negatives aside, join together as Americans, and support / pray for Barak Obama and everyone working the White House for the next 4 years!
