Gov. Sarah Palin's turkey-pardoning photo op was not the kind you'd see at the White House, to say the least. Here in Washington, the idea of these annual events is to leave everyone feeling warm and fuzzy.
But we're talking Alaska here. And we're talking Palin, so you expect things to be a little different. And they were. This may be the only turkey-pardoning photo-op where you actually see turkeys slaughtered.
MSNBC had video of the actual pardoning ceremony on its Countdown show last night.
This photo op is so bizarre it makes you wonder if it's a hoax, if two videos were actually edited together.
How any politician's staff would allow their boss to do an "availability" against a backdrop of turkeys shuddering as their necks are snapped is really about as mind-boggling as it gets.
There's something to be said for keeping it real, for showing people the way turkeys get to Thanksgiving tables.
But politicians' availabilities are meant for getting their message out. It's hard to do that when people are distracted by turkeys doing death kicks in the background.

We're so spoiled in this country we don't even have to think about killing a turkey to eat. We just pick it up at the store & let other people do the dirty work, but we still complain when we see it done. This nation is full of hypocrites!

Jeff,
People are aware that turkeys are slaughtered -- we're not stupid. But, it *is* stupid for a photo op/interview on a turkey's pardoning (a feel-good story) to be done while other turkeys are being slaughtered. She needs a PR agent! The woman has no sense whatsoever -- which is why the Republicans were keeping her muzzled. She's out there now, huh!

While I am certainly a strong supporter of our new president-elect and found the McCain/Palin ticket a scary one at best, I think we need to draw the line here and realize this is simply not something to use against her. In fact, it is not really newsworthy. It certainly is worth a laugh, but beyond that it does not comment on Sarah Palin's values or ability to govern in the slightest. I am very happy see is not going to be our Vice President, but let's not skewer her just for sake of it.

What do people think? That Turkeys just drop out of the sky onto there tables? Of course the get slaughtered. Why is anybody making an issue of this? You seriously think people today would actually get up and hunt and then clean a turkey? This is news?? Give it a break!

It is commendable that MSNBC has started campaigning for Obama/Biden 2012! Get rid of any 'PROBABLE ' competition right now before it is too late. What other reason could prompt this paparazzi style of news item?
Posted by: ladkee | November 21, 2008 2:13 PM
Why this is newsworthy I do not understand except if gives the media (those that are supposed to be impartial and just report the news) a chance to attack her character with their ridicules comments. In fact this says nothing to her character except she is a down to earth woman and Governor. And there are enough problems in this country to report on, and not publicly criticize Palin just for the sake of criticizing her.
Posted by: Garland Cooper | November 21, 2008 2:13 PM
If the video is authentic, it truly is a shame. A shame in the sense that one must wonder if the media and/or any of her handlers (if present for this) didn't simply frame this shot and let it rip knowing full and well it was just one more joke against her. She was dragged through the mud already, so lets just continue to joke at her expense. Someone is either incredibly careless or just lacking in any judgment (and I'm not implying it's simply Palin herself)...
Posted by: Ang | November 21, 2008 2:38 PM
Awww.....Poor Palin. Everyone is picking on her. After all, what did she do to deserve this? Heck she really didn't have a bad thought in her mind when she accused the president elect of "palling around with terrorists". She meant no harm in dividing America into anti and pro American areas for her political gain. Just because I made fun at Obama telling Americans they could do one truthful thing to help with fuel savings and then came out with that neat little tire gauge with the words Obamas' energy plan, why would the evil media make fun of Palin pardoning a turkey in full view of a slaughterhouse with the camaras capturing them slaughtering a turkey on film during that good feeling message? I just don't get it.
Posted by: bill r. | November 21, 2008 2:54 PM
You're right. Another Sarah Palin blunder isn't news.
The fact that she managed to turn the annual turkey-pardon-for-TV video clip into a look at what happens to the less fortunate birds is par for the course for her. We can only hope the news media will do the right thing and ignore her from now on.
Posted by: Tom O | November 21, 2008 3:02 PM

Posted by: rslewis147 | November 21, 2008 3:05 PM
The TV crew knew exactly what they were doing - there is no way they didn't. This isn't amateur hour, where, ooops, look what's going on back there! They're professionals who choose backgrounds for a living. A pretty good example to show how childish certain members of the newsmedia can be towards politicians, especially conservative ones, who they believe they can pick on.
Posted by: Angel | November 21, 2008 3:06 PM
While it's a cold, hard reality about how meat ends up on our table, this seemed intentional on the part of Palin. If she's going to include turkey slaughter in her interview backdrop, she shouldn't talk about how much fun she's having. A message of appreciation for the birds that didn't get pardoned would have been more appropriate.
Posted by: DD | November 21, 2008 3:06 PM
News flash, people know where their meats come from, but for several centuries now urban dwellers have not had to slaughter their own animals. And most don't want to watch it in progress, either. And what about kids watching it? As usual, she prattles on, oblivious to everyone and everything but herself.

Posted by: Independent Voter | November 21, 2008 3:42 PM
The point is not that turkeys are slaughtered, but the ironic juxtaposition between her pardoning one, and then talking about it while people can see other turkeys being slaughtered.
I don't blame her as much as the doofuses who let the interview happen where it did.
Posted by: Michelle | November 21, 2008 3:44 PM
The background is hilarious, but it's her incoherent rambling that is really funny, as usual. She couldn't string together a cogent thought of her life depended on it.

Posted by: Matt D | November 21, 2008 4:24 PM
I personally thought it was crass - after pardoning a turkey, which should be a "feel good" moment, especially for that turkey, then we are subjected to watching other turkeys getting slaughtered? Are we sure that the turkey in question was saved?
Posted by: Renee | November 21, 2008 4:48 PM
Ahhh....The hope and pride of the GOP 2012.
Posted by: bill r. | November 21, 2008 5:09 PM
Is it surprising that the governor who came up with the plan to pay a $150 bounty for every wolf shot from a helicopter during winter when the wolves have nowhere to hide or run would be insensitive about the slaughtering of turkeys? This woman has no sense of decency or empathy. In that way (and many others) she is just like G. W. Bush.
Incidentally, I am a vegetarian so I am not a hypocrite. I will not be eating meat this Thanksgiving or on any other day.

How can anyone claim Palin is the victim here, or cry it's the "GOTCHA" media? The outrage on here isn't because of the treatment of the turkeys...it's because of the idiocy of the person. This doofus set up what should have been the world's easiest photo-op, and she bleeped it up. Simple as that...end of story. How could anyone...Republican, Liberal, or Independent...possibly want her finger on the button?
Posted by: Rick D | November 21, 2008 6:26 PM
First of all, this is pretty bizarre - thanks to Countdown and The Bathtub Boy for bringing it to everyone's attention.
But the same morons who are snickering at Palin and the goings-on in the background ought to realize that they'll probably also eat turkey in the next week - and how did it get on their plate? It was slain, just like in the video clip. So hypocrites, the MSNBC losers and everyone who thinks this is such a joke, laugh it up. You're all clueless.
Posted by: RealityJoe | November 21, 2008 6:32 PM
How did this happen?
Well, it WAS at a slaughtering facility.
The cameraman set up his angle so he could catch it on film.
The interviewer kept Palin occupied so she wasn't aware of someone 20-30 feet away.
IT'S SENSATIONAL JOURNALISM.
Posted by: Stacey | November 21, 2008 6:36 PM
Well, I'm pretty liberal, but I'm a turkey eater, so I guess I can't be a hypocrite and pick on her for speaking at a slaughterhouse. Just because we aren't killing the turkeys doesn't mean that we aren't supporting this industry. If we don't like it, maybe we should become vegetarians, eh? I didn't vote for her, but I can say that at least she's honest. The holiday centers around turkey, doesn't it?

I think it's awesome that she went to an actual turkey processing plant. Only and idiot like Frank James would claim to be shocked (SHOCKED!) that turkeys get slaughtered when he enjoys a thanksgiving meal. It's going to be fun watching these idiots in charge for the next four years. Good for Sarah for not kowtowing to the PC police. Screw photo-ops, give 'em reality, Sarah! They obviously can't handle the truth.
Posted by: Jeff | November 21, 2008 7:37 PM
I wish Palin would fade away into obscurity but her lack of common sense just keeps her in the spotlight. Say what you will about he media, but if she didn't give it more ammo, they'd leave her alone. She has no clue and anyone who thinks this is yet another attempt by the "left-wing" media to discredit her is just as lost as she is. She was never and will never be a viable candidate for anything other than mayor of a small town where she knows most of the people (that's why she spends most of her time back in Wasila instead of the Governor's Mansion, kids). She's nothing more than a smiling wink trying to pass for someone who knows what's going on in the rest of the World outside of Alaska when in fact she doesn't. Then she has the nerve to claim it's because she's a Washington outsider... please, she's outside of everything, not just Washington.

Wrong. Palin was asked if she really wanted this to be in the background and she said "No worries". Her idea of "fun" is truly troubling.
Posted by: DD | November 21, 2008 7:56 PM
Hey, turkeys have to get slaughtered one way or another if they are to be eaten, I can't fault the admittedly slightly creepy dude for that, but this plays out like a Monty Python skit. Posted by: jim kube | November 21, 2008 9:18 PM
Okay, Palin was asked about the shot before hand. That was reported LONG before her spokes person made the conflicting statements that "she didn't know" and "the camera guy ignored requests to change the shot"... so which was it? Didn't know or didn't have the good sense to shut up till the camera moved.. or.. maybe, just maybe... lies again and the original report is correct. She APPROVED the shot.
We all know turkey's are slaughtered. The question is, with all her political prowess, what the *** was she promoting? How many kids have been totally grossed out now? How many new PETA members will there be over this stunt?
It is clear now why Palin needed close supervision on the campaign trail. She's dumb as rock. She's a shallow pig in lipstick -- looking out for her own good and nothing else. Funny how this seems to be the first turkey pardoning in Alaska... can we say photo op!
Also funny how I can't find a single peep of her doing a single thing for Veterans on Veteran's day.
I say give Alaska the vote and let them vote themselves out of the US. See how much they like it then when 60% of Alaskan jobs are paid in part or full by federal dollars.
You Palin lovers are SO DUPED! She'd stuff every one of your heads down that cone in a heartbeat if she could make a buck doing it.

One of my first field trips in third grade was to the Bil-Mar Turkey Farm where we were allowed to witness turkeys strung up by their necks and run across an electric wire. Darwinism by fire. And I went to a Catholic school.
This story is not about the gruesome details of how that shaved, smoked turkey breast sammy was born. It is about how clueless and incompetent Sarah Palin actually is. Her vacant platitudes and inability to answer the most basic questions proves she is horribly incapable, incompetent and just plain embarrassing. Only a fool would have voted for that ticket.
Oh, and Jeff, since you were a McCain/Palin supporter from start to finish, you are obviously an optimist. But you shouldn't be thinking about four years from now, that is a lock for the Dems as well. Start thinking in terms of generations, twelve minimum, more likely sixteen plus. So not sure where you're getting your information from, but I'm thinking that you're now anticipating the same type of treatment to Obama. Sarah Palin may have seemed like a real turkey or a candidate for the Vice Presidency – but she has proved herself a public relations turkey as well, even though the media could be blamed for some foul play. A video has been circulating over the internet of her performing one of the more solemn and difficult of her duties as governor – pardoning a turkey. Now, the tradition of the pardoning of a turkey from the slaughter that awaits in anticipation of Thanksgiving is an amusing one, but when the Governor gives an oration about the pardoning of the bird while the meatpacking plant carries on with slaughtering other turkeys while she gives her speech seems a bit hypocritical – pardoning it whilst its relatives are slaughtered? (Can’t she at least give the poor flightless fowl a cash advance?) She was definitely in for the photo op, which is at least a light hearted break from the drudgery of the end of campaign season, but why wasn’t she at least made aware of what was going on behind her? Is this who we are to expect to enter the 2012 presidential race? She may seem to be looking out for Joe the Plumber and Joe Sixpack, but what about Tom Turkey? He should probably look into a fast cash advance for some armor. Click to read more on a Cash Advance
