It's easy to understand some of what must be tugging on Caroline Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy's daughter who, according to reports, is considering seeking the Senate seat from New York being vacated by Sen. Hillary Clinton, President-elect Barack Obama's choice to be his secretary of state.
A Kennedy has served in the Senate since 1952 when her father was first elected to the body, with only a brief interruption after JFK was elected president.
But her uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy has an incurable brain cancer and is 76. The easiest way to ensure that the Kennedy Senate tradition continues would be for her to have New York Gov. David Patterson appoint her to fill the seat.
Of course, the seat being vacated by Clinton was once occupied by Kennedy's other uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, so that's quite possibly another draw.
Beyond that, if Kennedy assumed that Senate seat, her presence would assure that New York state and women would continue to have a very high-wattage advocate in the Senate whose mere presence would draw attention to their issues.
Kennedy has shown clear interest in the kind of legal and public-policy issues taken up the Senate. A lawyer, she has co-authored books on the Bill of Rights and the right to privacy. She has also been a champion of public schools, leading efforts in New York City to raise private money for them.
If she did take the seat, Kennedy would immediately become one of the Senate brightest stars much as Obama did when he entered the chamber in 2005.
If journalists had a vote in who fills the seat, she'd probably win since the public would likely want to read more about her than some of the other reported possibilities being suggested for the seat.
The Kennedy name still has a lot of magic for many Americans, and as one of the few last direct living links to JFK, it would be hard not to pay attention to her.

Tbink New York could do better, but she has the clout.

We can rest assured that she will follow, not in her father’s step, but her uncle’s. How that will make her a star, much less a bright star, is a total mystery to me.

The Kennedy family has been referred to as "the royal family" of America. I find this disturbing. The Kennedy family fortune came from bootlegging booze during the Prohibition.Ted Kennedy drove a car off a bridge on Massachusetts' Chappaquiddick Island after a party, fatally injuring aide Mary Jo Kopechne. He then left her to die after escaping. And i can go on and on with murder and raping. For ones have the courage to tell it as it is.

New Yorkers would benefit from her access. Caroline gets spotlights, media, access to the Prez, easier meetings than any junior Senator ever would. She helps New Yorkers. She can do more for her state because other Senators will want to work with her for the PR alone.
Also, it helps Gov Paterson replace a "star" with a "star". And they're both women. The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee (sort of the Emily's List of NY) is not alone in massively lobbying that a woman must be appointed to Hillary's seat. And it gives Paterson good political cover to not appoint others. He can say: They benefit from her clout.
On the other hand, I don't care for political dynasties. GW Bush is exibit 1A of the harm that can come from electing the idiot son of a political dynasty (Bush). By all accounts, Caroline Kennedy is very sharp though.

If Caroline K. accepts the Senate seat, and then wins an election on her own, she would be poised to become a presidential candidate in 2016, after Obama's 2 terms are up.
If the Bush's can do it, why can't the
Kennedy's?

Ms. Kennedy, divorced without children, well educated and experienced. At age 51, if she wants to get into politics, she'd better start now. I doubt that she is a copycat Kennedy, regardless of her antecedents. I don't hold Caroline Kennedy responsible for what Ted Kennedy did, do you? Very few families in America are without their sleeze factor, or black sheep. What one's relatives do is beyond most folks control. Judge the woman on her OWN merits, please. Thanks.

this is an affront to the people of NY. other than a famous name she has no reason to be considered at all.

Just what America needs another Kennedy in politics. They have been re-electing Ted Kennedy what seems like forever. What's wrong with you people in Massachusetts?. And New York doesn't need a Kennedy. Quite a few people bring up the Kennedy curse, but maybe its just a little of payback.

Speaking of dynasties, JEB Bush (yuk) may run for a Florida Senate seat in 2010. So I guess the people of Illinois are happy to have just one senator. That's all you deserve, I suppose. When are they going to pick a replacement for (the irreplaceable) Obama?

The correct term would be "numbnut"; unless you're referring two or more individuals, which you weren't. The word nut here refers to the head, so "numbnut" would be the same as saying "numbskull" ...you numbnut!

To the original post: So how is the upstanding caroline qualified to be a US Senator, anyway? Oh wait, she's a Kennedy. Never mind.
Posted by: Stop torturing the language | December 6, 2008 10:05 PM
So, because she wants it, she gets it? because she wants to dabble in king-making, she gets to ascend to a Senate seat, without the messy work of, say, being a council member, then a state rep, etc..
No, she's queen Caroline, she's Queen Kennedy. Kennedys don't have to be lowly elected beings, they get to go right to the top!
Give me a damn break. She has no business being in the US Senate no matter what precious little Caroline "wants." If she "wants" to be in elected office, tell her to start at the lower levels.
Hmmm, I just remembered. Her beloved Barack, who reminds her so much of her precious "daddy" didn't exactly do that, either, did he? well, two of a kind. Want everything, without having to work for it first.
Spare me. That woman has no business being appointed to a job others have earned.

Actually, she has three children and is still married, as far as I can determine. I have long admired her evident intelligence and low-key life and so have mixed feelings about her going into politics. But perhaps a smart person who has spent most of her life avoiding the temptations of celebrity is not a bad choice.
Posted by: Mark | December 6, 2008 11:40 PM
I like the Kennedys and Caroline. However, Caroline has lived the life of a hermit for years. How does that qualify her to be a Senator?
I said the same thing when Hillary shopped around for a state to run in. When one has to shop around to finda political position, its not worth running.

I see them morons, the Kennedy-haters, have visited this article and dirtied it up, with their mess. Three sons, Joseph, John and Robert, gave their lives to our country, the fourth, Edward, has dedicated his entire adult life to the excluded, of this nation's bounty. That he was involved in the tragic death of Ms Kopechne, is a loss and a burden that will never go away, for either, Ms Kopechne's family, nor Senator Kennedy's conscience. It was a tragic accident, that may have been compounded by alcohol and Senator Kennedy, since 1969, has suffered the consequences.
For the morons that are less forgiving, continue your hate campaign against a very American family, that has done, or tried to do, some good things for this great country of ours. As far as royalty goes, we kicked that nonsense out at the time of our Revolution and anybody who makes claim to that idea, is not an American. The Kennedy's never claimed royalty, it has been a media sparkler, helping headlines and an incendiary idea lobbed by the haters, to smear a family that has served this nation, unquestionably. Can these Kennedy-haters get any more American !!?
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Oh PLEASE, Don!!! This too much, even for you!!!
.
The noble Senator Kennedy -- likely drunk since that was typical of him -- drove off a bridge; abandoned the scene with Kopechne still alive in the car; and didn't report it till the next day after he had a chance to sober up!!! Yeah, he was "involved" Don!!! The dedicated Sen. Kennedy demonstrated all conscience of an alligator regarding Mary Jo Kopechne!!!
.
But the most important point is that any other citizen would have gone to prison for this!!! Why didn't Teddy? Because he's a Kennedy!!!

Damn, what is her qualifications to be the new york senator, other than she is the daughter of once famous politician? I dont like children of once politicians are given free passes for responsible jobs!
Hillary definitely leaves a large shoe for her to file. Versus Hillary, Caroline definitely is under-qualified to be the senator!

Listen to Drooling Terry,
The GOPer's pick up one seat in Louisiana and Terry acts like they've just won the World Series of politics...meanwhile, the GOP is getting creamed everywhere else and in almost every corner of the US.
Like I said before, all that's left of the GOP for 2009 are the radical religious nuts and the deadenders (Terry) who think that the last eight years of the Bush crime family leadership have been smashing success.

Actually, the GOP wins over the weekend and the Georgia Senate race does show a kink in the loons' armor. Chambliss has a 3 point spread on election day with BO heading the ballot, but wins by 15 w/o BO at the top. The underlying question is w/o BO on top of the ticket, how will the loons do in 2010?

Wingnutter Terry,
The fact that Chambliss, a "base" Rethuglican deadender (like you) if there ever was one, actually had to go to a runoff in the first place in Ga, shows just how pathetic the GOP has become. And the fact that he finally won it in a blood red Rethug state is no surprise to anyone but you.
The seat that Jefferson lost is mostly in a D+28 district which will return to the Dem column next cycle because the Dems sat this one out to rid themselves of Jefferson, which is something completely foreign to Wingers (Stevens).
I've already looked at all the match ups and possible match ups for 2010 and things don't look any bettter for your team then either.
Facts have a well known liberal bias and you Terry, have a well known inferiority complex.

Bill Kristol,
The Republican brand is in the crapper. It went from big spreads in both the House and Senate and a dream of a "permanent republican majority" to a close to 20 seat deficit in the Senate (with more likely to come in 2010) and around 80 in the House. It lost the White House. Badly.
Its' core philosophies (and I am not buying this "the Bush year policies weren’t really republican or conservative" because when you have control of the entire government, you enact what you want) have destroyed our economy on a scale not seen in close to 100 years. Its aggressive and arrogantly ignorant foreign policy has ruined our credibility around the world (and nearly bankrupted us). The levels of cronyism have led to billions of dollars being "misplaced" or sent to friends on no-bid contracts for crappy work. The culture of corruption has led to indictment after indictment after indictment of republican Congressional officials, the politicizing of the Justice Department and the burrowing of wholly unqualified people into major policy, leadership and civil service roles.
It has presided over a crisis that has lost more jobs in decades, has fattened corporate wallets at the expense of We the People, has seen a decline in our educational standards (and scores), has enriched the pharmaceutical and insurance companies at the expense of affordable access to healthcare. It has let a major American city drown in what was nothing short of criminal negligence.
It allowed for the murder of thousands on 9/11 with the careless disregard for warning after warning. It allowed the deaths of many rescue workers, the death of close to 1,000,000 Iraqis for a "mistake" and the death of hundreds (if not more) in the Gulf Coast. It has failed to do anything meaningful about the root cause of terrorism and has made us less safe.
When finally in the minority in Congress, the republicans merely set a record for most filibusters of all time. And they did it in just one year.
It has alienated entire races of people, it has alienated immigrants, it has alienated same sex couples, it has alienated the lower class, the middle class and much of the upper class. Its members have lied, blown off subpoenas, have been convicted of sex crimes (many times over), covered up for sexual predators who were in charge of underage Congressional Pages, were convicted of election fraud and have tampered with elections on the Congressional and Presidential level in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. And during the past six years, culminating with the recent Presidential campaign, it has thrived off of fear and loathing. Fear of anything that isn’t precisely like them, and loathing of anything that isn’t, well, precisely like them.
It is a party that felt its best way to win is to use violent rhetoric (at the worst possible time, of course) to rile up its base – based on lies and the most tenuous of "guilt by association". Most of all, it has shown that it has no vision, no ideas other than hate, and has demonstrated exactly what it would do if it could control all of government.
This was the third straight cycle (2004 and 2006 as well) that young voters came out for Democrats. And generally speaking, if someone votes for the same party in three straight cycles (especially their first three cycles), they pretty much stick with that party for life. The timing couldn’t be better for a long stretch of Democratic party dominance.

Trickled On,
.
The fact is w/o BO's coat tails in two years, many of these House elections will flip back, especially if the economy doesn't turn.
.
Dope,
.
The GOP brand is crap, but now the bag is on the dems and they have to be responsible. Just to show how dumb the dem voters are, nost people that voter for BO thought the GOP held control of Congress - that lack of intellgence should not be there in 2 years. So after BO has failed, it all rest on him, and Harry, and Nancy.
.
The Bush policies did not destroy this economy - forcing abnks to amke loans to people who can't afford them is what has cause this economic mess and that my dope is all on the hands of the democrats.
.
As far as the young voting democratic - just go back to the old saying "If you vote Republican when you are 20, you have no heart. If you vote democratic when you are 40, you have no brain. Guess what dope, those 20 year olds will age and they will grwo wiser as they see their shot at the brass ring taken away from them by BO's large gov't programs that rewards mediocrity by taking away from achievment.

I wonder if you really think that Caroline Kennedy, has not had her pulse on everything political that has happened in this country since her conception. The woman is brilliant, and she has not been inspired to work with politicians of her standard until now with this election. Trust and know that Caroline Kennedy, has not been without close range to politics since never. Know this she IS in line for the Presidency as her great father. Now she is inspired. Watch out and understand how the brilliant work.
