George Stephanopoulos broke some news today when he reported that his former fellow Clinton White House colleague Rahm Emanuel was cleared by an investigation by Greg Craig, the former Clinton White House lawyer, into contacts the Obama transition team had with Gov. Rod Blagojevich's office (so far as we know Blago had no role in the Clinton Administration even though the former president and Blago both have a thing for Elvis, thank you very much.)
As Stephanopoulos reports in his blog (he also said this on "This Week" this morning:
Sources tell me that the Obama team's review of contacts with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will show that Rahm Emanuel had only one phone conversation with Blagojevich.
The contact, described as a "pro-forma" courtesy call, came as Emanuel was named Chief of Staff for Obama. Most of the discussion concerned Emanuel's Congressional seat (which had previously been held by Blagojevich), with only a "passing reference" to the Senate vacancy, according to these sources. No deal for the Senate vacancy was discussed.
Speculation in Washington and Chicago has been swirling for a week now over what the Obama team's report would find. Until now, the contents of that report have been kept sealed, at the request of the U.S. Attorney's office. Last Wednesday, Obama said he found it "a little bit frustrating" that the report had not yet been released.
The sources add that the report will show Emanuel also had four phone calls with Blagojevich Chief of Staff John Harris. During those conversations, the Senate seat was discussed. The pros and cons of various candidates were reviewed, and the sources say that Emanuel repeatedly reminded Harris that Blagojevich should focus on the message the pick would send about the governor and his administration.
Sources also confirm that Emanuel made the case for picking Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett during at least one of the conversations. In the course of that conversation, Harris asked if in return for picking Jarrett, "all we get is appreciation, right?" "Right," Emanuel responded.
It struck me from the beginning of this that there probably was no 'there' there since USA Fitzgerald signaled very strongly that he wasn't going after anyone on Obama's team. It seemed like an attempt by us media types to raise questions to keep the pot stirring more than anything else.
You would have expected someone in the Obama transition to talk with Blago or his people to express a preference for certain Senate candidates over others.
\
But Fitzpatrick made sure the criminal complaint contained exculpatory information about the Obama team, that all it was going to give Blago was "appreciation" which caused Blago to describe Obama with an expletive.
So the report pretty much confirmed what Fitzgerald said. Sounds like it's going to be a big fat nothing burger, which is no surprise.

Comments
Obama should hire a team of circus clowns, psychics and palm readers to come out and read his report next week. Watching the exploding heads of the Rush and Hannity Republican robots on here would make for a perfect X-mas gift.

Well! This report certainly restored my piece of mind! I've been steaming over the latest ABC report where ABC spent 5 pages trying to link Emanuel to the Blago scandal, using innduendo, speculation and the mysterious Unnamed Source.
Posted by: sweetwater | December 21, 2008 3:29 PM
Sure, and we should just go ahead and believe this INTERNAL Report conducted by a Clinton Lawyer. Right. Guess what's coming next, an INTERNAL Report from both Tony Rezko and Rod Blagojevich proclaiming them both innocent after an INTERNAL investigation.
Keep the change - there's nothing here worth believing but a bunch of INTERNAL lies.
Posted by: JolietJay | December 21, 2008 3:36 PM
So Obama's lawyer clears Obama's team. Just like Blago's lawyer clears Blago. As Gomer Pyle used to say, "Surprise, surprise!"

HMMMMMM. Its amazing OBAMAS OWN TEAM CLEARED HIS OWN TEAM??
Thats like a crack dealer investigating his own crime and finding no evidence.
Didn't you know EMANUEL bought his seat from BLOGOJEVICH!!!!

Doubt if this will be the end of Rahm -- -Blago.issue.
Posted by: Inky | December 21, 2008 4:40 PM
hahah. how stupid are americans? yeah i believe an internal investigation by "Obama's team" is probably fair. they wouldn't be swayed for any reason to issue a positive report of no wrong doing. might as well start trying gang banging using their own people as the jury. its the same thing. i don't know if emmanuel did anything but this "report" is beyond a joke and should be an insult to the intelligence (or lack thereof) of americans.

Patrick Fitzgerald: Please don’t discuss this one "pro-forma" courtesy call for a week.
Posted by: Mike | December 21, 2008 4:51 PM
What really amazes me, is the media can go after, a loud-talking Governor, who hasn't been convicted of anything, instead of shining that same bright light on a totally corrupt Wall Street. Those corrupt and greedy financial Houses that have cost the American taxpayers, what some economists are saying, 60 Trillion Dollars and we want to nail a trifling Governor !! Corporate America knows how to take care of its own !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Uhhhhh.....
So how come we haven't seen Rahm for over a week? And how come other reports cited 21 contacts with Blago or Harris? Sounds like another shady manuever by Obama and Emanuel. Get used to it - 4 more years of misleading information and half truths...

"But Fitzpatrick made sure the criminal complaint contained exculpatory information " You do mean Fitzgerald don't you? Just phoning it in again -- please try to concentrate on your work.

Again the media clears Obama and his staff before any information actually comes out. Does it not matter that Stephanopolis' (who worked for the Clintons) report is contradicted by other reports that Rahm has 20+ contacts with Blago?
Posted by: VivianC | December 21, 2008 5:45 PM
The real problem was in Obama's delay in answering these questions. If he didn't know about Emanuel's multiple contacts, he should have. If Emanuel didn't tell Obama, then he should be fired. There was nothing wrong with Obama or his man expressing their wishes about the Senate seat. The delay made it look like a cover-up. And it also made it look like they waited until Christmas week to take advantage of low media interest.
Posted by: Derrick | December 21, 2008 6:06 PM
Oh yeah it was a courtesy call... thats how Blago got Valerie Jarrets name.. out of the courtesy blue...
And the George Stehphanopolis should know what he is talking about. He spent years covering up for the Clintons...

I'm glad to learn that Obama's staff cleared Obama's staff of having anything to do with Blago's attempt to wheel and deal with Obama's replacement position.
Let's see... Rahm had only one contact with Blago ........ plus four more with his staff for a total of five overall but I guess only the first one counts.
Yes I guess that clears him
Posted by: Wayne Meyer | December 21, 2008 6:29 PM
Actually, considering the intelligence of Obama's team, I would be surprised if Emanuel wasn't the person who gave up Blagojevich, especially with the criminal aspects. Jesse Jackson Jr. on the other hand I would bet, especially since they arrested Blagojevich right after talking to the esteemed congressman, would at least be tainted! Any other office besides the solid African-American base he caters to, and holds now, would forever be out of his reach! And that's a GOOD thing!
Posted by: Jim | December 21, 2008 6:40 PM
Oh Boy, Obama is going to release his report. Done with no supeona's, no worry of perjury charges, no legal legs to stand on, and no worry of making himself look bad. I'll wait for the federal prosecutor to release more information before I believe the Obama report.
Posted by: Crazy Politico | December 21, 2008 6:47 PM
George Stephanopoulos was a Clinton hack. Sorry George.
As a Chicagoan, I'm a bit jaded in that I doubt Fitzgerald will take a tenuous case against the incoming US President's team unless he had more proof.
I don't doubt that Obama's boy is dumb enough to openly bargain over the senate seat and that Blago wasn't smart enough to read between the lines and try to negotiate some favor in the future.

We have Obama's team clearing Obama's team of wrong-doing. We do NOT have Fitzgerald's team saying there was no contact, which is what Obama said. While there may have been no wrongdoing, why say there was no contact, when not only probalby was there, but it would have been LOGICAL for there to have been?

The wingnuts on here who want Obama to fail (like their hero Bush has) just dont get it. He did NOT have a cozy relationship with Blagojvech, for the past two years they had a pretty distant one. We in Illinois know this. He did campaign for him, in 2002 but that is because Raymond Burress his first choice didnt get the nod. You nuts need to stop thinking that everyone believes your bs propaganda like you do (Obama birth certificate). Why would not have Rahm called Blago on the senate seat. ????
Obama's relationship with Blago was anything but cozy. The right wing is desperately trying to weave some sort of corruption by the Obama people into this and it just isn't going to happen. The true colors of the Republican party are shining brightly as we enter a new era of government in Washington and the country. It is clear that their sole objective will be to dishonor and bring down the new administration and Congress, any way they can. This is exactly why we have lost so much respect around the world the last eight years. Sadly, even though they've been reduced to small minority satus, they will never change.

Please, please, oh please don't shut the door on this. There's got to be an Obama connection to the governor's crazed scramble for money. Why, they're both from Illinois, and in the same party: Isn't that enough? It's not? Ummh, they're both from Chicago? Nothing there, huh? They both know Mayor Daley, and everyone who reads John kass knows that anyone who knows Mayor Daley is a corrupt fiend. Hmmm, the republican U.S. Attorney couldn't find any double-secret kickback from Obama to Governor B? That's impossible! Why kass just tossed together a column filled with mafia names and shady politicians and contrived a way to splatter muck on Obama. Can't the justice department do that? It can't? You mean he might really not be corrupt?

Now that organized crime is about to be firmly installed in to the Federal governement, expect more of this corruption and cover up. The rabid fans are calling names of course! Right Wing Nut Jobs seems to be a common kindergarten kind of fun thing to say. It's easy enough for a child to remember and repeat over and over again. A conspiracy theory put on by the vast Right Wing Nut Job group who has nothing better to do than constantly investigate corruption in politics.
The most amazing theories used by the vast Left Wing Diaper Squad is that the federal prosecutor's already cleared Obama of any wrong doing. Does this mean anything, ""But Fitzpatrick (actually Fitgerald) made sure the criminal complaint contained exculpatory information " . Yes it does, it means that Fitgerald is following the federal prosecutors play book just like he did with former gov. Ryan and Tony Rezko and every other criminla he's convicted.
You can't include every criminal in the complaint against the one being put on trial. They'll all get their own criminal charges when the time comes! Rezko, Ryan, Ata, Cellini, Kelly, Blagojavich, the list gets longer and longer and oddly enough, one at a ttime!
And Don, before you start your rants about the financial debacle, remember your star democrat Congressmen in charge of overseeing the financial system watched from the sidelines while the markets turned to garbage!

HopeNChange: I agree, Obama did not have a cozy relationship with Blago.
The problem relationship is between Rahm and Blago. Of course they are going to have some chatter, but if they collude to make a deal through an intermediary for the seat then Rahm is in trouble.
Hard to believe that Rahm made just one call. The information conflicts, we first heard 21 times now the number is 1.

You WingNuts really do have short attention spans. From the onset of this investigation Federal Prosecuting Attorney Fitzgerald said that there was absolutely no link between the Obama Team and Gov. Blago. My guess is that PE Obama could not comment because of the ongoing investigation which one with normal common sense would agree upon. I expect that is why PE Obama made the comment this last midweek stating that it is frustrating not being able to release any information, at this time.

I don't know why you haven't seen him, but he's been right there in his usual spot off to the side of every press conference save for one, when according to reports he attended a recital at City Hall with his kids.
Steve P. again: "And how come other reports cited 21 contacts with Blago or Harris?"
That report originated from one sentence in Michael Sneed's GOSSIP column in the Chicago Tribune, something most of the media outlets who picked it up neglected to mention. Sneed is also known to be a mouthpiece for Blagojevich.
Posted by: winnie | December 22, 2008 10:53 PM
Per my previous post, I meant Blagojevich mouthpiece Michael Sneed's gossip column in the Chicago Sun-Times. That's where the "21 phone calls" info comes from. Sorry Trib...
Derrick said: "The delay made it look like a cover-up. And it also made it look like they waited until Christmas week to take advantage of low media interest."
It was ready a week ago. U.S. Attorney Fitzgerald asked them to hold up, a fact confirmed by his office.
Sure it's an internal review, but it happens to corroborate the U.S. Attorney's statement that neither Obama nor his staff are implicated in the investigation, and Blago caught on tape cursing them out for offering nothing but appreciation It's also a lot more than you could expect from Bush administration. Heck, Karl Rove refused to talk to Fitzgerald unless he was subpoenaed.
City guy: "Oh yeah it was a courtesy call... thats how Blago got Valerie Jarrets name.. out of the courtesy blue..."
Courtesy call to say he was accepting Chief of Staff positon, and if I read the preview of the report correctly some talk about the Senate seat. There were also four calls to Blago's chief of staff. I assume Blago talks to his own chief of staff.
