President-elect Barack Obama's top advisors say they won't back away from a promise to cut taxes on the middle class and raise them for the wealthiest Americans, as they made the case for a massive new stimulus package geared toward reviving the slumping economy.

Speaking on Sunday talk shows and in a newspaper opinion piece, Obama aides stepped up a drive to build a broad political consensus behind Obama's core economic proposals: a two-year spending package that could exceed $775 billion, coupled with tax policies weighted in favor of the middle class.

Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press, David Axelrod, a senior advisor to Obama, said, "We have to act. Every economist from left to right agrees that we have to do something big in terms of job creation, but we want to do it in a way that will leave a lasting footprint."

Obama wants lawmakers to give him a stimulus bill to sign soon after he is sworn in Jan. 20.

Writing Sunday in the Washington Post, Lawrence H. Summers, Obama's incoming director of the White House National Economic Council, said the bleak economic climate called for substantial new spending.

"Economic forecasts have been revised significantly downward over the past several months; today, many experts believe that unemployment could reach 10% by the end of next year," Summers wrote. As of November, unemployment stood at 6.7 percent.

Summers added: "In this crisis, doing too little poses a greater threat than doing too much."

The tax promise must stay if Obama is to get some leeway in his attempts to govern from the center. Knocking out the supposed "middle-class" tax cuts while going ahead with massive stimulus would merely reinforce conservative "tax and spend" criticism

Just out of curiosity,

1) Does anyone actually believe that the middle class will get their taxes cut in the next 4 years?

2) Did anyone actually believe Obama when he pledged this during the campaign?

3) Since I'll need some extra money to pay the Obama taxes, is anyone willing to put their own money where their mouth is and wager that middle class taxpayers will pay less in taxes 4 years from now?

Keep on, keeping on, President-elect Obama!! Given the mess the ridiculous Republicans have left America in, tax cuts, rescinded for the 1% and enacted for the middle and working class, is an imperative. The last 8 years have seen the skyrocketing profits of the Corporations, particularly, the Oil Corps, who's profits are now estimated at 700-800 Billion Dollars, so, they better come off that dime !! They better start carrying their fair share of the tax load, according to their " stated " profit margin. Yet, we all know, it is good capitalistic trick not to reveal your true earnings,. That's just smart business sense, right ?!! That's, that good old time, Republican rag !!! The Party, who's foundation is built on do-do: Don't do as I do, do as I say !!

Sure Bruce, I believe. And if you're earning so much that you might get an increase down the road, then you should be happy to start paying a bit for Bush's war. Is the definition of conservative "selfish?"

For another view on Obama's tax/jobs "plan", from someone who isn't an Obama spokesman, see "Obama's Job-Creation Program Flunks Basic Math: Caroline Baum" at http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&sid=akZbz4hvE7TA

It will be interesting to find out what the democrats definition of "the middle class" really is. Even at that, you probably would have to start up your own Wind Farm or maybe buy a minimalist car powered by Di-Lithium crystals to qualify for any kind of tax break.

Bruce, on your wager, I am taking the over. Cutting taxes is not what leftists do.

Fareed Zakaria is right. Barack Obama will be judged as President by whether he can save capitalism. The pessimism engendered by organized labor lobbyists for the cynical purposes of increasing their status as power-brokers can only diminish his chances of success, should he succumb to it by continuing to support the undemocratic Employee-Free Choice Act. Universally opposed by employers of all types, this restriction of voting rights to union supporters would sacrifice both free employee choice and the ability of these employers to withstand oppressive economic conditions. Despite the rhetoric of "union-busting," unions have withered away to 7.5% of private employers because they reflect the protection of employment laws has rendered obsolete an authoritarian, paternalistic institution and employment relations system that owed more to the English "Union poor houses" of the early 1800s that the voluntary organizations of tradesmen. Employers have always served as a proxy for protecting employee free choice even under this archaic system by permitting the employer to decline voluntary recognition based on signed cards (which may be signed under pressure). Any revision should preserve the employee protection of secret ballot electiion. If unions are to be preserved by undemocratic means at the expense of employee rights, Obama will have ignored the clear voice of American business and all those who love democracy for the benefit of a few at the expense of the many - and the future of our economy.

He sure isn't left !! That is a certainty !!

How Bush managed to get around raising taxes was to raise the deficits/national debt. Money doesn't come from nowhere (and it doesn't GO nowhere) and ramping up spending like Bush and the Repug Congress did, while cutting taxes, is just passing on the costs to the next generation. And the next generation will have to pay it off with higher taxes.

Bushonomics is just Reaganomics warmed over: Cut taxes + Ramped up spending = huge deficits.

There's no such thing as a free lunch: America has learned again that taxcuts DON'T pay for themselves.

Bruce,
I'll make my first prediction for 2009:
President-elect Obama's grand vision for unity and bipartisanship will run into more resistance than he expects, even as America's collapse worsens. The Republicans down south and elsewhere simply can't help themselves. Collateral damage is of little consequence to these cuckoos just as long as their country clubs don’t double-book their tee times.

Wait till the lobbyist get hold of Congress and Obama's Tax Plan will Change to a Down Spiral..

Yes, the principal that this nation is built on is at stake. Lincoln put it best : "Government of Business, By Business, for Business must not perish from the earth." We must protect business from the wishes of the workers at all costs. The voice of business must triumph over the voice of the common worker. The CEO must be heard above all melse, as the founders of our great Republic clearly intended.

Yes, the poor CEO's must be saved from the greedy overpaid workers. We can't let the wall street CEO lifestyle of limo's, private jets and champaign be threatened by the little people. The blue collar workers must be stopped at all costs.

Pluto/Oligarchist,

As the auto industry clearly indicates, CEOs get just as rich with unons as without them. There are simply fewer jobs available for workers. I assume that is why you don't want workers who would vote "NO" to any particular union to have the protection of a secret ballot election in which to exercise their free choice.

Teresa,
Your hatred of unions and blue collar workers and embrace of all things wall street and greed is so popular that I can see why Republicans like you won a huge majority of congress and the white house this year....uh.....wait a minute.....uh.....never mind.

Hey, " PlutoOligarchist" don't waste your time with the corporate shill. He/She likes to spread lies and distortions. Just go and google FECA and you will see the nonsense they represent. Don' t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. They are card carrying members of the Reagan "union-busting association ", formerly known as the Republican Party, now known, as The Losers Party !!

So, what's your point? How does making the workers all poorer in any way, shape, or form help the worker? I assume you've begged your boss to pay you half of your current pay so they can hire someone else on too? I'm sure they were thrilled when you did.

The point is unions and their lobbying organizations are businesses that drive revenue growth through the dues of new members. My employer doesn't need to pay me less because she doesn't have to cover the additional cost of union dues. But this isn't about me, even if you can't respond to the merits of my arguments.

"As the Obama administration takes the helm, the key political question is whether the Democratic Party, which has so benefited from union support, will have the courage to push the UAW into a more reasonable relationship with the Detroit Three. Namely, a relationship in which employee relations and entitlements approximate those found in the "financially viable" sector of the U.S. automotive industry -- i.e., the foreign transplants. If the Obama administration does not force the UAW to make further concessions, it will not be able to save the Detroit Three, no matter how many green cars they roll off the assembly line."

Let's just hope he sticks to his guns. The majority of his supporters are from the middle class.
