The Swamp

by Frank James

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, appearing on MSNBC's Morning Joe said President-elect Barack Obama erred by not putting out the key points on his campaign's dealings with Gov. Rod Blagojevich immediately, and making the story last distract his transition longer than it would have otherwise.

Politico.com captures the main thrust of Rendell's comments:

Now, he said, the story will continue to dominate the media's attention.

"They have never been in an executive position before," Rendell said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "The rule of thumb is whatever you did, say it and get it over with and make it a one-day story as opposed to a three-day story. Politicians are always misjudging the intelligence of the American people."

Known for his blunt critiques of fellow Democrats, Rendell did not hold back during the interview.

The criminal complaint essentially exonerates Obama and his staff, Rendell said, because it quotes Blagojevich as saying the president-elect would offer him nothing but appreciation for appointing Obama confidant Valerie Jarrett to the position.

"Did Rahm Emanuel who took Rod Blagojevich's seat in Congress have contact with Rod Blagojevich? Of course he did," Rendell said. "They may have thought he was the craziest S.O.B. in the world. But you still have to have contact with him."

The criminal complaint exonerates Obama and his staff because it quotes Blagojevich as saying the president-elect would offer him nothing but appreciation for appointing Obama confidant Valerie Jarrett to the position, Rendell said.

"Blagojevich curses them out," Rendell said. "It is easy [for Obama to] just say, 'Hey folks here it is, of course we had contact.'

"But they made the mistake of making it a four or five or six day story."

I would be afraid if the Obama people started taking Rendell's advice. He likes to hear the sound of his own advice way too much. Isn't the the one that kept urging Obama to campaign in PA because he thought he could lose it? Obama won there by over 10 points and he could have used that time in Missouri and other states.

Obama lied about his staff having no contacts with the governor about the senate seat.

And yesterday, for the first time in recorded history, Rahm Emanuel refused to talk to reporters.

The Trib (ObamaNews) will have to work overtime to cover for their man here. But I have no doubt they will.

Looks as if "Demo Gate" is comming for Christmas.

3-day story? Ha!!!! This will be lasting a while...

I think Rahm's days are numbered.

It looks like some are so caught up in their excitement for scandal that they can't see straight.

Obama said he did not have any contact with Blago on the issue of the Senate seat, but he never said his staff did not have any contact with him. He said they accounting for any contacts with the governor and will release what they find in the next few days.

Blago complained bitterly and profanely on tape about the negative response to his pay to play proposition, so whomever he did talk to gave the right message.

The U.S. Attorney said neither Obama nor any members of his staff are implicated in this investigation.

I think HopeNChange is trying to put words in Obama's mouth. Of course there were contacts at some level, just no dealing. But don't let the facts get in the way.

Something to ponder- If Obam is lying how can he swear on the Bible the oath of Office of President?
Any coments out ther?

Inky, this is what Obama actually said, as opposed to the misquote your reference.

"I have never spoken to the governor on this subject. I am confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this seat. I think the materials release by the U.S. attorney reflect that fact," Obama said. "I've asked my team to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor's office about this vacant seat, so that we can share them with you over the next few days."

Mistake No. 1 -- Appointing this crooked Chicago Machine hack as Chief of Staff.
.
Mistake No. 2 -- Giving this story legs. After being asleep for two years, the press is now awake and looking for something to do. By being evasive, Obama & Co has the press chasing them.
.
Mistake No. 3 -- Not firing Rahm Emmanuel.
.
And we haven't even had an inauguration yet!

Please clarify, MJ; why should Rahm have been fired? What did he do? Something you dreamed last night? He should be fired because you don't like him, I suppose.

"Please clarify, MJ; why should Rahm have been fired?"

.
The short answer is because he's political poison. Because hiring him was a huge mistake to begin with.
.
I assume you don't know about RE. Chicago's Liberals (NOT the witless cheerleaders posting here) rolled their eyes said "Oh God, NO!" when Obama appointed him.
.
Emmanuel is an old school Chicago Machine operator. For example: In 2002 he was running for congress against a grass roots Progressive candidate. Mayor Daley, grateful to his loyal Rahm, put hundreds of city employees to work -- on the city payroll -- stumping for Emanuel. Of course they were afraid not to work the precincts. It was the only way for them to keep their jobs or get promotions. The grass roots Progressive was defeated.
.
Also Emmanuel has been tied by the hip to Blagojevich for a long time, until very recently. (At least Obama was smart enough to cut his tie a couple of years ago.)
.
Add to that dirty resume a naturally combative personality, and you have a magnet for trouble for the Obama administration.
.
So Obama should use the first opportunity to undo this blunder and dump Emanuel.

It's interesting how a week ago all these commenters were claiming Obama's birth certificate was defective, and the same ones now are wishing some sort of scandal regarding him and Blago. How sad.

That's easy. Yes he can. The oath pertains to what he WILL do, not to anything he may have done.

That's no answer MJ... you want Rahm fired because you don't like him. We'll see.

MJ,

You wrote a half page "indictment" of Rahm and said virtually nothing.

rupert:
I think unloading Emanuel at the first would be the smart thing to do. (As smart as hiring him was dumb.) It's not a question of what I want.
.
Bubba,
Ah, one of the witless cheerleaders has checked in. I'm unclear on how my outlining Emanuel's record, the way he practices politics, his connection to the Chicago Machine corruption, his sense of ethics is "saying nothing". Please explain.
.
Or is it that you can't refute the facts, so you think that calling them "nothing" will make them seem less harmful?

ask Rahm's co workers in Clinton's west wing what they thought of him.

Save you the trouble. They wanted him fired . couldn't stand him.

does that bode well?

Sure, let's dissect:

"The short answer is because he is political poison. Because hiring him was a huge mistake to begin with.

Both of these statements are nothing more than your opinion, supported by nothing factual.

"I'm sure you don't know about RE. Chicago Liberals (not the witless cheerleaders posting here) rolled their eyes said "Oh, God, NO!" when Obama appointed him.

This is not only the most poorly constructed sentence in the history of blogging, but it fosters such little merit, it is almost not worth commenting on. I would recommend some supporting data or maybe read a book on Logic.

"Emmanuel is an old school Chicago Machine operator............"

Again, nothing but your opinion followed up by an indictment of Mayor Daley, not Emmanuel.

"Also, Emmanuel has been tied to the hip to Blago........."

Again, nothing more than a vacuous platitude, supported by nothing.

"Add to that dirty resume a naturally combative personality and you have a magnet for trouble for the Obama administration"

More vacuous platitudes supported by nothing coupled with a non sequitur accusation of the Obama Admin.

"So Obama should use the first opportunity to undo this blunder and dump Emmanuel"

Once again, just your opinion with no viable facts to back it up.

When you make blanket indictments of people, it is usually necessary to support your position with factual evidence or examples. The only example you listed in your rant is about Mayor Daley. Other than that, like I said, pick up a Logic 101 book. Maybe start with Ignoratio Enlenchi. Once you understand the basics, feel free to respond.

Most of us know what is common knowledge (hence the word "common") and so don't cite references. I won't educate you, but I will help you out (just this one time) with a few pointers:
I recommend a couple of books as background reading for the Chicago Machine: "American Pharoah" by Cohen andf Taylor; And "Boss" by Mike Royko. They'll give you background info (that remains relevant today) as to how politics works in Chicago.
.
Follow that by using a search engine called "Google" (maybe you've heard of it) and you can get the facts about today's politicians from the archives of the Tribune and Suntimes, as well as other sources -- even the LA Times and Boston Globe. You'll find nuggets like the fact that both Obama and Emanuel were top strategists for Blagojevich in 2002, while Axelrod, recognizing a human slug, wisely declined.
.
But I won't spoil it for you. I'll let you embark on your own voyage of discovery, so to speak.
.
PS: As for my opinion (yes, I did state an opinion) -- that Emanuel should be dumped ASAP -- it's well founded and widely shared. And here's another one for you: he will be dumped as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Actually I shredded everything you wrote, line by line.

And you responded, quite predictably, with nothing again.

"Sredded"?! You blithely dismiss facts reported over the past several years (in Newspapers, TV, radio); you don't refute, you simply deny the commonly known facts; and you call that "shredding"?. That's insane.
.
If you really are that uninformed, I have more important things to do than educate you. Do your own homework. If you just enjoy being a contrarian, then there'd be no point to my trying to educate you, anyway. In either case, I've already wasted too much time with you.

You seem to have a disconnect between what other people have written and what you have. You also keep burying yourself by not addressing the gist of your original posts.

To date, on this thread, you have not given a single example or justification to your knee-jerk claims about Rahm Emmanuel. You have done nothing but continue spinning in the wind by "citing" books and "common" knowledge about Chicago politics. Typical intellectual cop out when you are to stupid or lazy to back up your mouth. Again, try a book on Logic, guilt by association is a pretty common logical fallacy. Maybe try "The Google" and you might actually find something Rahm Emmanuel has done to support your baseless claims. Otherwise, I'm not going to do your homework by justifying your baseless generalizations.
