Candidate Mitt Romney, left, had evolved to the anti-abortion camp, where John McCain, center, ultimately the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nominee, had staked a tent for some time. But their rival, Mike Huckabee, right, owned the campground. They are seen here at a January 2008 Republican debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C. (AP Photo by Alex Brandon)

With tens of thousands of anti-abortion protesters descending on Washington today, another voice is heard from as well:

"In a city of many competing political interests, these marchers have come to speak for only one cause: The goodness of every life, and the rights of the unborn. ''

Mitt Romney.

The Republican former governor of Massachusetts and erstwhile candidate for president who has, as he likes to say, "evolved'' on the question of abortion rights. He has settled squarely in the "pro-life'' camp, which is where any good Republican contemplating another run for president will reside.

"Thirty-six years ago, those rights (of the unborn) were denied by our highest court, in a decision that also denied the rights of all Americans to resolve the abortion issue through democratic debate and legislation,'' Romney said in a statement issued by his PAC - The Free and Strong America PAC - today.

"America owes these marchers a debt of gratitude for their perseverance in a noble cause,'' Romney said. "I am honored to count myself as their friend and ally. And because of their dedication and their goodness of heart, I am certain that one day this cause will prevail. "

Thinking, perhaps, that one day his own cause may prevail as well.

The abortion protesters arrive confronting a new challenge: A president who supports abortion rights and how has appointive power over a Supreme Court that teeters on the edge of potentially reversing Roe v. Wade.

It remains to be seen how many seats President Barack Obama will get on the court, but every one he gets represents a potential setback for the anti-abortion cause.

On the day of Obama's inauguration, "an estimated 3,000 pre-born babies were being intentionally killed. His administration can stop that," says Nellie Gray, president and co-founder of March for Life, the annual protest of legalized abortion.

The first March for Life -- held Jan. 22, 1974 on the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision -- rallied about 20,000. Last year's assembly claimed 225,000.

This year, Mitt Romney is with them.

In spirit.

The Republicans and the religious fanatics still don't get it: Women have a constitutional right to privacy. That is the beginning and the end of it, unless of course, you want to re-work the evolutionary theory, as well !!! It's "rally the troops" time, they can't allow America to begin the healing processes and the reconstruction of America with a new, democratic President, President Obama !!
Well, guess what, gals and guys, America has spoken and she has stated quite clearly, that those old, tired, divisive issues do not work, any more. So, put them away, as you did with Mitt, during the Republican primaries and join the rest of America. We need you, in order to get out of this crater, in which, former President Bush left us !!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

What part of this don't people understand?Abortion is out and out
murder. Murder of the defenseless.
You people out there that call themselves Catholics, Christians and other religious faiths how can you continue to allow this to take place. The outcry should be deafening. What America and the rest of the world are doing makes the Nazis look like small potatoes.

Good try, Romney. No one will forget that you are a flip-flopper though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_nnLegPetA

It's possible though, that Mitt could have a good run at Obama if the economy does not improve. I would love to see Palin bash Mitt as a flip flopper though. :)

Mitt Romney acted to be pro-choice to get elected as governor of Massachusetts...Once elected, and as he decides to run for president knowing that he will need the support of the right-wing pro-lifers, he flip-flops. I would have a lot more respect for the guy if he had an ounce of conviction in what he believed.

It is obvious that Mitt is just a slippery politician with no backbone to take a stand on something that might not be popular for his situation...he would rather pander to those from which he needs something at the moment.

To my knowledge, Mitt Romney has not "flipped flopped." He has not gone back and forth on the abortion issue. He had a stance for a period of time and then changed it, but that's it.

The media, and GOP candidates, gave him this label of flipp flopper because they were desperate to keep him out of the race. He is a huge threat. Had it been Romney against Obama, especially at debates dealing with issues, things would've been a lot different.

I believe when he says he is against abortion. He has a beautiful family with many grandchildren and perhaps that helped change his mind.

The only other viable candidate for 2012, in my opinion, is Bobby Jindal. Both he and Romney have stellar, experience filled resumes.

Gee, I wonder who’s running for President in 2012? It’s too bad he can’t get his rhetoric straight this time. Take note of his statement to the effect of:
.
“Thirty-six years ago, those rights (of the unborn) were denied by our highest court, in a decision that also denied the rights of all Americans to resolve the abortion issue through democratic debate and legislation ...”
.
Huh? If the unborn have rights, why is it any better to deny those rights “though democratic debate and legislation” than in a decision from the highest court? One must conclude that, if life is as sacred as he claims (and it is), then depriving the unborn of life by any means and through any decision-making process is an evil thing. So, if one wants to complain about states rights, then complain about states rights. If one wants to complain about murder, then complain about murder. But one shouldn’t complain about the Supreme Court taking away the power of the States to decide whom to murder through its own democratic process. That kind of argument has no moral spine.

As an ardent pro-lifer, I am very happy Romney is on our side now. We should accept anyone who wants to join our cause with open arms. Besides, at least Romney knows what's going on. What other Republicans are paying attention to the movement? FOCA could be passes any day, so we need to get the word out as much as possible and I thank Mitt for at least doing something.

Got to love all the reicht wing goons, almost all men, telling a woman what she has to do with her own body. If men were able to get pregnant, abortion would never be an issue. Get over it bible thumpers, if you don't want an abortion, don't have one. Keep your fiction-based beliefs to your self!

Flip Flop. Flip Flop. You will always be the great flip flopper Romney. You can make a fortune selling sandals for the rallies.

You will never be our President. We don't want you.

.
So what you’re saying is that a woman’s body is just HER body even when she is carrying a child? Doesn’t science tell us that unborn children are alive? Would unborn children have cellular reproduction, eat, experience feelings or reach term if they weren’t alive? Doesn’t the fact that unborn children are alive have any moral or ethical consequences? Saying that a woman can do anything with her body is like you saying, “I can do anything I want with my skull,” while forgetting that you have a brain inside of it. No, wait . . .

It's always been interesting to me that people on the left like to tell those on the right to rely on science to disclose the meaning of life and explain how our world came into existence but when science allows us to peek inside the womb and clearly see that an unborn child is just that; a child, they don't want to discuss it. Then, they want to rely on emotion and feeling and talk about their right to control “their” body.

The truth of the matter is nobody in the pro-life movement wants to control any woman's body.

Honest, we don't.

You can pierce it, tattoo it, dye it, build it up or tear it down. You can get implants in it or liposuction done on it. You can do what you want with your body and we really don’t care. It truly is your business.

But abortion isn't about your body. It's about someone else's body. We know it is someone else because science tells us so. They have their own specific DNA make-up that is quite different from yours. They have their own heart and lungs and hands and feet and eyes; their own everything. They are just tiny and very young but rest assured they are a whole and complete person. And, just like the adorable two-year old, they only need time and energy and a little care to become what you and I are today.

So, nobody wants to control your body. We merely want to protect the body of someone that is too tiny to protect themselves from the greedy so-called ‘doctors’ who make their living by killing defenseless babies and from the mothers who have sadly been mislead by the pro-choice community into believing that what she carries within her is a part of her rather than a completely separate human being.

I would ask everyone reading this to just be rational. Although our mothers carry us and give birth to us and nurture us for many years, none of us is now, or has even been part of her body. We have our own body separate from hers. Scientific evidence tells us that and common sense does too.

Putting science and religion aside, what are we saying to history about how important we value life? I think that as a society with laws that protect the spotted owl more then the unborn fetus is hypocritical of us. The biggest war going on in the world isn't in Iraq or Afghanistan it is the womb. Heaven help us because now it is more dangerous to live in a placenta then in a tree. Giving women the option to have an abortion is just too easy. It requires no responsibility on her part and punishes the innocent. There are far better alternatives that should be encouraged and supported. Most liberals donate millions to save beached dolphins and whales and protect endangered species and even to save the earth, but encourage killing the future. What irony. We spend millions to prolong life yet want to squash it when it isn't convenient In WWII we sent soldiers who risk their own lives to deliver people out of the hands of Hitler and yet only five decades later, we have learned nothing. Those who promote abortion are hypocrites to their own history

Maybe if Republican policies didn't leave our economy in shambles (1980s, last 8 years) poor women might be able to afford to have and provide for their children, instead of feeling like an abortion is necessary. I'm just saying.

How does Roe v. Wade square with the Dred Scott decision?

The Dred Scott decision held that a certain class of beings, in that case black folks, were not fully human and therefore were not entitled to the rights that white people have. Now we know that to be wrong. Roe v. Wade held that a certain class of beings, in that case the unborn, were not fully human and therefore were not entitled to the rights that the born are.

To believe that Dred Scott was wrong (as I do) and that Roe v. Wade was right (as I don't) should make one's head explode.

Mitt Romney is a fine man. I would love to see him take on Obama in 2012. A Romney Presidency would be outstanding for America and her people! Run Mitt Runn 2012!

I really wish you pugs started making sense here...John W included. Life, as I define it, supports itself, simple as that. Look at it through the eyes of someone living 100 years ago, or for that fact, back in Jesus's time. Life supports itself...this human intervention thing is about 1 second in the life of human evalution. This theory also applies to end of life issues as well. And yes, I agree with doctor assisted suicide too.

That said, I believe it is a woman's right to chose, but I still think adoption should be the first choice. I said that years before the loony believers started saying this recently.

Please keep your fairytales to yourselves. I could care less what you believe, but don't force it on others.....I don't knock on your door and tell you how to live.

God formed you in your mother's womb. It is He who sustains the very breath in your lungs and He alone decides if you just breathed your last. When you do you will bow before Him and confess that JESUS CHRIST is the Son of God. You may deny Him with every breath until that moment and then it will be too late. God alone reseerves the right to give and take life. The only change that amounts to anything is the change that takes place when a heart turns from rejecting to accepting the provision God made for each person, through Jesus alone. I hope you have a change of heart and I look forward to dancing on the streets of Heaven with you one day.

This is the American Holocaust.

45 million Americans have died since 1973, not for being Jewish, Polish, homosexual or having the wrong politics, but simply for being inconvenient.

It's the "me" generation in full flower.

.
Are you making sense? Think about what you have written. You say that, as you define it, life is only life if it supports itself?
.
I left off practicing law for the last six years of my mother’s life. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s seven years before she passed away. My help wasn’t really needed the first year. However, by and by, she lost her ability to speak, walk, dress herself, take her medications, eat or control her bodily functions. In the last year of her life, it was literally like caring for a large week-old infant. I am 100% sure that she would have expired from want had I neglected to care for her for a day or two.
.
By your definition, she had already stopped living because she could not support herself in any meaningful sense. But is that right? She still smiled and laughed, she still enjoyed the company of the dog, her three cats, her children, her friends, and listening to music. She could still feel the warmth of sunlight on her face and the comfort of her own bed in her own room in her own home. In her own way, she could still register approval and displeasure of what went on around her. By my reckoning she was still alive because her God-given life-breath hadn’t departed.
.
While they haven’t seen the light of day, children in the womb experience many of the same things. They grow because they are alive. That is a biological fact. That might explain why some cultures reckon a person’s age from the moment they were conceived. Even the scientific community concedes that unborn children can feel pain and experience consciousness after 17 to 20 weeks of gestation. 17 weeks is less than half-way through a normal term. They are still incapable of taking care of themselves at that point.
.
Even if you don’t believe in God, the brutal view that emerges from application of your idea is hardly acceptable. If what you are saying is true, then not only would assisted suicide be okay, so would taking people out and killing them against their will once they have lost the capacity for self-support. After all, if there is no longer life when one cannot support one’s self, then what protectable interest do they have left even if they are conscious and can feel pain? I hope society hasn’t become that rude and unfeeling.
.
Nor do I think your test offers a workable plumb line for determining when life begins. Even new born children are incapable of self-support. They can’t hunt or gather. They are entirely dependent on their parents to nurture them until they can act for themselves. (Sometimes I wonder if that doesn’t occur until they are well into their 40s.) Thus, the idea of self-supporting versus non-self-supporting life is really a non-starter as far as criteria for defining life go. Human beings all have need of mutual support from the moment they are conceived until their spirit departs.
.
A final word about faith: Far be it from me to force any idea on you that you cannot accept freely. Faith is not faith if it is not voluntarily embraced. Jesus never came out of a gun or from the edge of a sword. Men are drawn to him or not at all. So, please understand that I don’t care to fill your space with what you have already apparently rejected.
.
On the other hand, I would hope that you could see clear not to denigrate my rights to disagree or voice my disapproval for a practice that I view as fundamentally evil. My expression of views neither picks your pocket nor breaks your leg. You don’t have to read it, and nothing compels you to adhere to it.

I see the right wing fringe is in the house, in a conversation with a god, so they say !! Keep your religion to your self, don't foist it upon a nation. This country was founded on freedom of religion, so don't force your religion on me !! I'm not stopping you from practicing your religion, nor is our constitution. So, keep your religious abortion beliefs to your self. If you want to lower the murder rate in the world, than speak out against war, capital punishment, human exploitation and all those other human activities that kill human beings, not fetuses, which makes it, not murder !! Take those guns away from kids and quit championing force and violence to solve your problems !! The biggest hypocrites in the world are these right wing anti-abortionists. They don't care any more about life, then the next barrage of missiles flying in Iraq, and maybe next, Iran !! Truth be told, these anti-abortionists are the reason their are so many abortions. They are the same crowd that wants to under-educate our young, shift jobs, out of America and keep people down and dumb. Their is no christianity in their agenda, just hate and more hate !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

The three pious, patriarchal men in the photo want to control and decide what goes on in the womb and body of women. LOL. We can conclusively state that these inadequate men have no empathy--zero true insight as to what they say about childbearing, or the bodies that do the childbearing. Since it is women, in more cases than men, that actually raise children for 18+ years, these losers need to shut up. Republican men should start by caring what happens to children AFTER the children are born. They need to make a commitment to care for children--as human beings--through the children's late teens--instead of posturing about the rights of the unborn then turning their backs on social programs to help children of all ages. These hypocritical, totally gross, pious and controlling losers need to get a life of their own or else put their money and votes where their mouth and love of controlling women are.

We should take care of the most innocent and weakest in our Society. There is no way to justify abortion except if the danger of the mothers life. Abortion is murder. The same people who are pro abortion are the ones passing laws telling people what they have to do with there bodies ie: wear seat belts in private cars, wear bike helmets, bannining ciggarrette smoking in private businesses, banning smoking in privacte cars. Where are these same fanatical Left winger zealots defending are freedoms. Its a realy sad statement that they would take the life of an innocent baby.

life trumps "privacy." Unlike Oaths of Offfices, there's no "do-over" for a life that has been intentionally ended.

Xcellentform, what's a "pug"? A small dog? A washed-up boxer? Neither of those seem to fit your context.

Oh, I get it, you're name-calling! You mean Republicans! I've always thought that name-calling was not particularly good form, and was in fact the last refuge of someone with nothing worthwhile to say. It discloses the weakness of your position, when all you have left to do is to call your opponents names.

To all of the people so against abortion: How many children have you adopted lately? It is a fact that human beings will continue to reproduce (even during times when they are not ready to parent due to any number of reasons, including drug addicition and young age). So, please, the line forms here for those of you so against abortion to adopt the drug-addicted infant that you think you are fighting so hard for...Unless your home is brimming with adopted children, please realise that you are all talk without any action.

What was that great line from a Southerner, no less: Give me Liberty, or give me death !! We aren't playing a game here. Life doesn't "trump" any thing !! I hope you speak out against war, capital punishment and any other human activities that take life, as fanatically as you do about a woman's right to privacy !! What does the MD stand for: Misunderstood Demagogue ? Keep your nose and your religious views out other people's lives. Worry about our own and this nation wouldn't be in the cesspool, your ilk has settled us into !!

Why is it that the world thinks Christians are full of hate? If a person truly believes what the Bible says, then they believe that the streets or Heaven and the fires of Hell are the only eternal options. They believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father and that we will all stand before Him when we die. How wrong would it be for a Christian who holds the key to all eternity in his or her hand and kept hidden for the lost and dying world. We love enough to be laughed at and scorned and insulted and cursed by you in hopes that you will escape the flames. God made you as a person with a choice. He desires to love you and to see you discover why he made you. Until you realize that and stip focusing on your own selfish ambition and vein conceit, your life will be unfulfilled and the hole in your heart will remain. Satan is thrilled with your position. He too thought he was above God and he knows his destiny. His only comfort is the company he will have in Hell. You may think that Christians are crazy and that is fine. Hypothetically speaking, If I and other crazy Christians turn out to be wrong, so what! Then we all become dust. But if we are right, where does that leave you? How sure are you of your views? What are you willing to gamble: your reputation, your life here on earth, your soul, your childrens soul, every person your antichristian views lead away from the hope that is only found in Christ Jesus? As for freedom of religion. In the beginning there was only God and only one faith and the law was given to man from the very mouth of God. Everything else stems from rebelion against God and the worship of false god's and idols and the product of self gain. There is freedom of religion in our country for any one that is not a Christian. The world hates Christians and finds the ways of God to be foolish just as God said. What He also said is that His foolishness will be used to confound even the wisest of mans wisdom. Watch for the signs. It is all in the Holy Scripture and it is coming to pass one prophecy at a time. The end draweth nigh. I pray you will see the love of true Christian hearts in your own life and that you will seed the face of God on this side of Eternity. I am a Christian and your soul is worth more to me than my own life. I will tell of the love of Christ as the world continues to spit in the face of God and those that earnestly seek Him. The prayers of Christians are the only thing holding back the wrath of God in our Nation. He spares the lost another day for the sake of those that love Him in hopes that today will be the day you stop living for your self and allowing the enemy to rule your heart and life.

DaveB....pug also means a bunch of fired small stones that gets hard like concrete...if you are keeping track. But please, add something to the conversation next time. I've been calling pugs pugs for about 2 years here now....so congradulations on your first post.

John W....you little lawyer you....I said nothing about care in my simple lithmus test statement. Do you have to jump up and down on a newborn to keep it breathing? Out of respect for your mother, I will not ask the other scenario. Newborns, and aparently you mother sustained life on their own. Yes, they both need care and help, but they are not hooked up to machines.

I watched my grandfather waste away with alzhiemers, and it is a very sad thing to watch in person. I have also held pro-life signs at abortion rallies, so I have seen MUCH from both sides. I saw the light, which happened to be the opened door in the back of the church, after 24 years of faithful service....even serving as a church elder and doing the board meeting things too.

Life supports itself folks, simple as that. If it was impossible to live 100 years ago, than it can not be made to live today. A dead corpse has a heart, fingers, and toes too, but it is not alive. A vegetable on machines has your requirments too, but it is not alive in my books, nor would it be alive 100 years ago.

I am not saying that we should not use our technology as we see fit to extend human life. If a parent wants to keep a preme baby, then they have that choice, if not, they should have that choice too. If an elder decides, with a sound mind, to not be hooked up to machines, they should have that right. If a person is diagnosed with a terminal disease, then they should have the right to end their life on their terms, and not suffer through to the very end.

John, I know you saw some times when your mother had some good moments. Where you there when she awoke at night in terror as she did not know where she was? I could go on and on, but I won't, and I hope you get my point. Late term alzheimers patients have more downs than ups, regaurdless of the point you are trying to make.

Since alzhiemers (last I checked) skips a generation, I guess that makes me the perfect host. I'll just have to be the forgetful old grandfather that takes the long walk into the woods, just like my ancestors did a millenia ago.

The Democrats still don't get it. Conservatives will prevail on this issue. A woman does not have a right to take the life of another human being. We do have the right to have our tubes tied but not the right to kill children, no matter what the age.

A woman has the right to have her tubes tied? Really? What would the arguments be in favor of that idea?

I was there for all of it, 24-7. Her waking up in the middle of the night in terror, not knowing her location, was hardly the worst of it either. Yet, notwithstanding the downside of her existence, she could still laugh and enjoy her life. The warmth that characterized her personality lasted to the very end - and much longer than her ability to express herself or control her physical actions. The point of my discussion, which I think you already got, was that she was still alive, her life was still worth living, and that it is not our place to make judgments about when live begins or ends or ought to begin or end. To me, that’s God’s job, and not mine.

I am amazed by the condescending and ad hominem remarks made above by pro-choicers.

They say that hope springs eternal, one proof of which is this story out of Flyover Country, North Dakota: State Rep. Dan Ruby has introduced a measure in the N.D legislature that would establish in law that which is already established in common sense, that babies are “persons.”
Ruby’s proposal, “The Personhood of Children Act,” would extend recognition of that most basic status to all children, from the moment of conception: http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=43109.

The proposal further states that dismemberment and/or torture of said persons shall be treated as felonious acts.

For the complete text of the bill, see here: http://personhoodnorthdakota.com/.

Similar proposals are in the works in Maryland and every other state to save the lives of the pre-born and of babies born and left to die on tables or in the trash at abortion mills.

Pro-life activists at the recent March for Life in Washington D.C., used posters and banners to send a message to President Barack Obama. (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)
