Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is "corrupt,'' the way Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sees it, explaining why the Senate cannot seat his appointee, Roland Burris, to the vacant seat of President-elect Barack Obama.
Blagojevich is about to be indicted, says Reid (D.-Nev.)
"Blagojevich obviously is a corrupt individual, I think that's pretty clear,'' Reid said today on NBC News' Meet the Press, "and the reason he's done what he has done is to divert attention from the arrest that was jut made of him and the indictment which will be coming in just a few days, according to the U.S. attorney...''
How can Reid conclude that the governor is corrupt?
"This man has had a cloud over him prior to his arrest... That's why the Illinois state Legislature is moving forward expeditiously... to start impeachment proceedings,'' he said. "I don't think we have any cheerleaders for Blagojevich that he is an honest, upright citizen.''
But he is the governor, Meet the Press host David Gregory noted, and he has made an appointment to the Senate under his power as governor.
"We're going to visit with (Blagojevich appointee Burris), and we would hope that in the meantime... Blagojevich would do the right thing.... Step down,'' Reid said. "There is a cloud over Blagojevich at this stage, a cloud over the state of Illinois. They don't have a vote.''
It's not about Burris, Reid maintains, but rather the governor: "We're talking about a cloud over the state of Illinois coming with anyone appointed by Blagojevich.''
Reid maintains that the Senate has the power to weigh the qualifications of its members, and can bar Burris from the seat. Reid, also a seasoned trial lawyer, does note that he will never rule out "negotiations'' that could lead to some other outcome.
Reid also maintained that Blagojevich is "making it up'' when he suggests that Reid had rjejected some potential nominees, such as Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. Jackson, Reid, said, would make a fine senator, and the governor is telling stories to mislead people. Reid also denied that his primary consideration in filling the seat is finding a candidate who can hold it in the 2010 elections.
"This has nothing to do with what happens in 2010,'' Reid said. "This has everything to do with the corrupt governor.''

Governor Blagovich is being lynch mobbed by the press and the US government. He is presumed innocent, until proven guilty in a court of law. He has not been issued an indictment, just a complaint which any Joe Blow can issue. Bush has many complaints filed against him, but has he been indicted or impeached? No!
Further, what has Harry Reid and Pelosi and the Senate and the Congress and the Judicial branch done about their own criminals, such as Paulsen who did not spend that bailout money properly and according to law? Instead they have appointed Neil Barofsky, a New York US Attorney, to be a Special Treasury Dept Inspector General to investigate what Paulsen has done with that cash! They gave him a budget of $50 million to follow the criminal activity of our own administration rather than arrest them and put the auditor we pay in place to do this job. What is up with that?
They all need to Get Out! or follow the laws of our land.

Reid "my lips" also said that an appointed senator must be able to "hit the road running", and he thinks Caroline Kennedy would be "fine" as senator. Burris has more experience to be senator than Obama had. With all this, what is there to "negotiate" in Reid's Wedesday "visit" with Burris.
A yeah, then there is that "cloud over all of the state of Illinois". Well, let's not be distracted by the opponents, as Obama frequently says.
Get on with it..."Burris Goes To Washington", eh?!

Blago doesn't have to listen to anybody and is NOT accountable to anybody ! ! ! That's what he is telling everybody with his actions ! ! ! As a citizen that HE has deprived me of a constitutional right of RECALL. If we the disgraced citizens of Illinois would have been afforded this whole fiasco would not be happening right now and he knew it that is why he blocked it. The analogy I use for RECALL is the same as if I had bought a product at a store, didn't like it and brought it back. The Illinois Democratic Machine has enabled coruption long enough ! ! !

January 22, 2010.
Former President Obama speaking from his Caracas Villa repeated his assertions that the Rezko Tapes were "manufactured by bitter Clinton supporters". Obama again claimed that "Pardoning Rezko righted a serious injustice and had nothing to do with the disappearance of Blagojevich from Federal custody". Obama thrrough aides has denied involvement in the disappearance of Blago and subsequent discovery of Blago's scalp found pinned to a telephone pole on the far Suth Side of Chicago near Obama's former haunts.
Meanwhile President Biden continues negotiations with Canada for the return of New Hampshire and North Dakota which were seized when he forgot his meds and launched strikes on Toronto.

Well, isn’t that special? I used to believe Harry Reid didn’t know what he was talking about regarding the Senate’s power to challenge qualifications under Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution. Now he has opened his mouth and proven every one of my suspicions correct.
.
Apparently, all Harry Reid’s trial lawyering and seasoning didn’t help him find the one U.S. Supreme Court case that held the Congress’ power to judge qualifications under Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution is limited to whether a proposed member meets the age, citizenship and residence requirements as set forth in Article I, sections 2 for Representatives, and section 3 for Senators. By definition, therefore, Harry Reid and the Senate Democratic Caucus have no power to exclude Burris on the ground that a “cloud” hangs over Illinois and/or Blagojevich.
.
This is only one more example of what I was talking about when I said that we have no adult leadership in Washington. Adult leaders would actually have read the relevant law and informed themselves of the relevant decisions of the courts before acting. And we actually expect these people to run the federal government according to the Constitution? Give me a break.

It's laughable coming from Reid. The same Reid who called Blago at the campaign office to suggest the right names.
I'd sure like to find a political party I can believe in.

Well, if there is anyone who knows a good, corrupt politician, it is Sen. Harry "Illegal Land Deals" Reid.

Reid says the Constitution gives the Senate the power to reject Burris. Wrong! Nowhere in the Constitution is that stipulated. Reid probably is referring to the section that states, "Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members." But Burris meets the qualifications stated in the Constitution, being 30 years of age or older; a citizen 9 years and a resident of the state in which he's chosen." The first two factors don't count: elections and returns because it's an appointment. As usual, Reid is whistling up a rope.

ILLINOIS EMERGING CLERGY/ACTIVIST GROUP CALLS FOR
HARRY REID'S RESIGNATION
Senator Reid's Race Baiting And Ignorance of The Seating Standards Set By The Adam Clayton Powell Supreme Court Case Forfeits Moral Authority To Lead
Press Conference set for 5:30 PM Sunday, January 4th,
Outside New Covenant Church,
740 East 77th Street
For more information
Rev. Dr. Marshall Hatch
773-909-5051
or
Rev Ira Acree
773-339-8590
The LEADER's Network, a Chicago clergy group comprised of activists, ministers, and pastors call for the resignation of Senator Harry Reid as majority leader of the United State Senate, after revelations of his racially biased senate pick list surfaced in the local and national media.
"Mr Reid has absolutely no business meddling in the Illinois senator selection process. He has gravely overstepped his bounds. His antiquated views on electability and race are divisive and out of step with the times" stated Rev Ira Acree pastor of Greater St John Bible Church of Chicago illinois.
"Senator Reid has forfeited his moral authority to serve as the majority leader of the Senate. He is wrong to imply that the Illinois electorate is not open to qualified statewide candidates from all communities in the state. His views are too narrow to be a national leader, he should resign immediately" stated Rev Marshall Hatch Pastor of New Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago's west Garfield area.
"Harry Reid is an embarrassment to the democratic party and the country, the sooner he is gone the better" stated Rev Cy Fields pastor of The New Landmark Baptist Church
"Clearly Senator Reid has tainted any aspirations for senate that Tammy Duckworth and Lisa Madigan may have" added Rev David Pope secretary of the LEADER's network.
The LEADER'S Network will have clergy and activists present at prayer service for Senator Roland Burris that will be held Sunday January 4, 2009 at the New Covenant Church
at 740 East. 77th street.
Mark Allen, a veteran political activist and Associate Editor of The South Street Journal Newspaper added that Senator Reid provided poor leadership to his fellow Democrats and deliberately tried to embarrass Senator Burris, a former Vice Chairman of his own party. Allen said "for Senator Reid to totally ignore the standards for seating that was established by the Powell case has created an unnecessary racial, emotional and political frenzy. The Powell case clearly established that despite Powell being under indictment, paying a 25,000 fine and other major allegations, that those factors could not be added as additional criteria for seating and Powell was seated, and if Reid was a responsible leader he should have started this whole process by instructing fellow Democrats that based upon the case law established by the Powell case, that despite the serious allegations surrounding The Illinois Governor, that as in the Powell case, cannot be used as additional criteria to block the seating of Roland Burris. The racial, emotional and political frenzy resulting from Reid's failure to follow existing case law of the Powell case is irresponsible, and he should remove himself from leadership"

Harrry Reid has his own clouds over his own head. He is protesting too much and throwing too much distracting glitter around. Reid needs to go. The Ill. senatorial appointment was made by a sitting governor who was elected by the people of Ill. There is no evidence that Blago received favors or payment for the Burris appointment. This gov is still innocent until proven guilty re anything and all things. Don't change the rules of the American chess game. I'd like to know what Reid and the others think of all the BushCo appointments and the burrowing of all the unvetted Bushites?
Trivia question: How many of the nine current Supreme Court justices have been seated by a Bush?
Answer: Four.
Posted by: Vivian | January 4, 2009 5:18 PM
Burris may be a fine appointment but there is no one at the present time that has the professional reputation as honest that could appoint him.
The Democrats of IL are corrupt witness their decision to not hold a special election. That said there is no reason why the senate should accept a man who was appointed by someone who is no longer fit to be governor. If Blagojevich is not impeached this month then the Senate should open up its own investigation of Burris and if he is found fit he should be seated. Those who say Burris should be seated without a proper vetting that Blagojevich is incapable of doing, are themselves guilty of promoting corruption.

Senator Reid is tainted himself. What business does he have calling Blago? Answer: he wanted to make sure "his" YES MAN would be appointed. Reid is a scumbag, should sit down and shut his trap. He is a disgrace to the Democratic party and I believe he is also a racist good 'ole white boy!!
Posted by: Reid is Wrong! | January 4, 2009 5:35 PM
Reid has every right to talk to Blagojevich and as long as all he did is talk, he is doing his job. There are things that Reid has done wrong in the past and will in the future but those carping about him now are simply self-serving partisans.
The idea that Reid was unethical because he spoke to Blagojevich is stupid and absurd.
Posted by: Ron M | January 4, 2009 6:14 PM
I'm not defending Blago, he has been a problem child from the beginning, and I cannot know all the evidence against him. But the timing and circumstances of this latest Fitzgerald action seemed suspect to me. And I have heard some rumblings from those who dare to say that his extension request may not be for reasons stated but because his case is weak.

So what? The politics of the President who appoints a Justice doesn’t necessarily determine the Justices’ views on the law. If you recall, Republican Dwight Eisenhower appointed both Earl Warren and William J. Brennan, Jr. - both of whom turned out to be rather “liberal” as far as justices go. Also, Justice Souter was one of Daddy Bush’s appointees. He is completely entrenched in the Court’s so-called “liberal” wing along with Ginsburg, Stevens and Breyer. Come to think of it, I don’t think Clarence Thomas’ libertarian leanings quite square with Daddy Bush’s views on things either.

That is absolutely false, Ron. The Senate doesn’t have the POWER to conduct such an investigation before seating Burris. What part of “they can’t do it” don’t you understand? Why should the Senate be permitted to conduct a “proper vetting” when the Constitution withholds that power from it? Or are you one of those who believe that the Constitution is only advisory or optional?
.
In addition, NO ONE in the U.S. Senate believes that Burris is corrupt, in which case they have no interest in vetting him. They are doing this current bit of grandstanding because they have it in for Blagojevich. They are attempting to reject the appointee because of who appointed him. That is not permitted under the Constitution.

See today's Sun-Times front page artcile about how Reid doesn't want a black appointed to the Senate from Illinois since reid feels a black cannot win state-wide election in Illinois.
.
Ironic since I believe that Illinois is the only state ever to have two African-American senators and also ironic that he doesn't want Roland Burris - who also has won state-wide election for two different offices.
.
I can't wait to see the campaign ad against Harry "Crooked Land Deal" Reid in 21 months. - Harry Reid - Minorities Need Not Apply.

Gov. Blago is indeed a soon to be convict, but Mr Burris has been legally appointed to the Senate under Illinois law. Excuse my exasperation, but who the hell does Harry Reid think he is? The United States is not a monarchy and the Senate is not a house of lords. The Senate doesn't get to decide their own members! Sen Reid's arrogance is unbelievable. The only politicians more unpopular than George Bush are those of the congress, and Mr Reid's and Ms. Pelosi's approval ratings are abysmal. Sen Reid's actions to block Mr Burris are constitutionally illegal and politically inept. The Senate can "do whatever we want"? How many times are we going to see that stupid and arrogant statement in political ads against the Democratic leadership?? He and Ms Pelosi will be perennial thorns in President Obama's side. The next change in Washington needs to be the Senate leadership. Reid has to go...

Elections, not necessary for residents of Illinois.
We need Reid approved appointments!
We don't need no stinking appointments from a currupt Blago. "We can do what we want" says Give em the boot Harry. We need someone who's been bred to govern. Let's send Harry a Madigan or Hynes relative and all will be well.

I was napping and missed out on who Quinn would appoint if he becomes Gov.
Tammy D?
Lisa M?
Probably Lisa M to remove a rival in case he wants to run for Gov on his own??
Meanwhile back at the Supreme Court Scalia Alito and Roberto are brightening up a bit. They won't get to pick the President this time, which is a bummer, but looks like they will get to pick a few senators.
The fact is, however, that a case called Powell v. McCormick would have to be overruled, or functionally overruled by "distinguishing" the posture of Burris' case, to keep Burris from being seated.
In fact, he was elected to state wide office 4 times in Illinois, which is more than Candidates 1 through 5 all put together.
And he could probably be elected in 2010.
Which is why my neighbors on the south side are upset by the efforts to squeeze him out.
They see correctly an effort to eliminate an "African American" seat--via Carol M.B and Barack--from the Senate.
