A folder left for President Barack Obama by former President George W. Bush on the Resolute desk in the Oval Office of the White House (White House photo by Eric Draper)
by Mark Silva
"To: #44, From # 43.''
The address on the envelope that President Barack Obama found at his desk at the Oval Office this morning, on his first full day of work.
A missive from former President George W. Bush.
Obama, who made the rounds of inaugural balls last night and returned to the White House at about 1 am EST, arrived at the Oval Office at 8:35 am this morning and spent 10 minutes alone in the office, according to the new White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs.
Obama read the note to him from Bush in the envelope marked "To 44 from 43.''
At 8:45 am, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel joined Obama to discuss the day's events -- which include meetings with economic advisers and military leaders.
At 9:10 am, First Lady Michelle Obama arrived - before the couple, who had danced their way from inaugural ball to ball last night, left for the National Prayer Service at the National Cathedral.
No word yet, on what the letter said.

Maybe it's an invite to visit Bush #43 at his dad's ranch in Crawford, TX.

I'm guessing that W. dictated his letter and his admin edited it. Boy George doesn't have the attention span to write more than 2 paragraphs at any one time - his ADD kicks in.

What a cool photgraph. Words could never convey the message - we're here, the time is now.

I would imagine the letter to be handwritten by President Bush wishing Obama the best of luck in office.
George Bush is a true statesman and Obama realizes this. I disagree with Barack Obama on virtually everything, but respect him for playing you "W" sucks fools like a flute.

Shouldn't your post come with some dramatic Andrew Loyd Weber theme music?
Please breath in and out- your hyperventilating..He is only a man who was elected president...thats it.
BTW- I think Rahm is asking him what he wants for lunch.

The Bush letter, like all to successors, makes three points: (1) Blame the previous administration; (2) Blame outside influences; (3) Write your letter to your successor.

All the snide comments aside, Bush has comported himself with utter class during the transition. Compare and contrast to the Clinton-Bush transition where the Clintonistas trashed the White House and stole government property.
I am certain that the letter was a quiet congratulations to B. Obama.

W was probably chiding Obama for mispronouncing nu-cu-ler in his inauguration speech.

In the first picture showing manilla envelope on desk, the fireplace in the background has no fire in it. In the second photo with Rahmbo, the fireplace is burning? The W envelope contained Rahm's indictment for Illinois pay to play politics, it's now what is burning in the fireplace......

Poor little Pre-Puke,
He still can't understand that most of America feels like they just overthrew a Bush Republican oligarchy dictatorship. Life must be good in the GOPerland bubble world.
It's going to a looooong eight years for you, Slick.

I got an advance copy of the letter:
It's in red crayon and looks like a "w" with some doodles in the margins.

Since President Bush is always the true statesman and gentleman, I believe he expressed his warmest wishes to President Obama and his family. He probably also stated that he, President Bush, would be available at any time in the future to assist and defend our country, if so needed. I just wish more people really understood what it takes to actually be President and make those serious and hard decisions necessary to protect and support our citizens. I am also sure that President Obama is finding this out every minute now.....

The Bush's left with class? That's rich.
A couple of weeks ago, Laura Bush was showing off her new set of gold-plated White House china to the press. Not a big story, unless you realize the economic catastrophe that happened on her husband's watch or the fact that the twelve place setting set cost a mere $493,000.
Dignity restored.

It is interesting to see liberal children come out to play. Interesting to watch them try and sit at the adults' table. Interesting, if disappointing, to see them embarrass themselves with immature, acidic personal attacks on the outgoing President. But satisfying to see some of them, eventually, mature into conservatives.

Herein, within the Swamp, is yet another opportunity for Liberals / Leftist democrats to express their extreme hatred for the most recent ex-president. I know before I unzip the comments that the Swamp comments will be more like a cesspool of hate. This is mild, so far. Maybe the Liberals / Leftists are still working off their partying hang-over. The Party of tolerance and diversity somehow seems to attract a whole lot of people that are just naturally given towards irrational hatred.
Something good, however, can come from something so vile. Strange and mysterious are indeed the ways of the Lord. The extreme hatred for George Bush made me analyze my attitude towards Jimmy Carter. I certainly don't want to become like one of you. Jimmy Carter shows up on CNN somehow, and instantly my blood pressure is elevated. Why is that, I have to ask, since I do not really hold the many presidential failures of his administration against him, 28 years down the road. The real Jimmy Carter legacy is, however, what he has done since Ronald Reagan and thankfully, America, threw him out of office in the 1980 election. Four more years of Jimmy Carter may not have been worse than what he has done in the aftermath.
Here’s the liniment. IF I could burn someone at the stake, I would burn No One at the stake. IF I could personally meet someone and spit on them, Jimmy Carter would not be on the intended list for my spittle. Jimmy Carter seems to prefer to work against all interest American or Israeli and truly makes for one sad sack of an emissary, but there are sub-human pieces of unquestionably unadulterated garbage that I would reserve that kind of clear and direct disrespect for. Spitting on someone, as some Leftists have stated they would like to do, should be an act of threat and assault.
Liberals / Leftist Democrats, I think that you need to think about what has apparently gone wrong in your life. Take up sports, gambling, or something, anything. Get yourself something hands-on to do to ratchet down your hatred of all things George Bush. IF you do need professional help, then you should get it and certainly don’t pay any attention to the non-professionals like me. There are truly worst people in the world that would be far more deserving of the level of hatred-unbridled that you direct towards Ex-President Bush every day, in your total Liberal Inability to recognize the one commodity that this world has no shortage of.
The new president does seem to have the good sense for respect and civility that the Leftist partisans need to give some serious attention to. IF, of course, that is within their ability of recognition, as limited as it is. Get yourself some help if you need to and have a nice day.

You should also direct your criticism to your fellow righties like John D and Paulo, who spew their hate for all liberals, and especially Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton every opportunity they get. If you really are concerned about elevating discourse, rather than just protecting George Bush, you really need to have the courage to criticize your own side as well. If you were to do that, I would take your post alot more seriously.

Lou,
Don't worry about it. My fellow Righties, John D., Paulo, heartburn, Jeff, et.ux. are, like me, generally expressing the conservative point of view ~ "The underpining of our very existence" according to Margaret Thatcher. If I did not have some sense of personal responsibility, I absolutely would never make it out of bed on any given day.
It took me some time to get beyond Bill Clinton and I probably will NEVER be able to find much good to say about Jimmy Carter, but there is still a limit to my distaste for him that falls Light Years short of what the Liberals seem to want to do to George Bush, even after he has exited the public stage.
I don't think that much of 'No Child Left Behind'. The burden of responsibility there, is all on the already over-worked teacher. Huge deficits, that's not what Republicans should be engaged in creating. We - Republicans, can say that we liberated Iraq and that Iraq will, with some good fortune, be more like Turkey and less like Syria or Iran in 10 - 20 years, but that has come at a huge price and essentially helped to ruin Bush's presidency and any real chance for any Republican to follow him. Right now, it looks like never.
There are any number of things that would be a fair criticism of the Bush presidency. But here's the liniment on that; when the Left has gone on the attack with the crazy, abstruse accusations like having secret knowledge of 9/11 before 9/11, starting a war solely to grab 3 million Bbls per day of Iraqi oil, Hurricane Katrina to wreak havoc on N.O., Tax Cuts that only the wealthy has benefitted from, and then after all of that plays out, they come again with the vile, viscious, personal stuff, then any legitimate discourse or difference of opinion is beyond elevation, by anyone.
Even though I do not always understand Democrats, I recognize that they are not the 2008-2009 version of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Lucifer, Jezebel, etc. If you too have a few limits with respect to how far you would ever go to abuse your non-favorite people, whomever they may be, then absolutely don't worry about what I am soliquoying about. I probably could not lead a dog to a meat truck, so it is very unlikely that I could elevate the discourse on anything. There are though, some very dark alleys that I personally will not walk down. Have a nice day, and thanx for the No-Name Callin'.

Dear Barry,
Look how much trouble I got into and I had six years of executive experience before sitting behind this desk.
Imagine how much trouble you're going to get into having no executive experience at all!
Warmest regards,
W

When you free them crimnals from GitMo, I know of good carpenter that'll add rooms to the White House for their safe abode. ;wow! all those extra babysitters.
Let me know.
I really don't think they'd like Texas, thank you.
By the way, is Michele expecting?

There's a reason I don't typically read the comments after the news articles...the vitriol spewed by both sides is frankly disturbing. While I strongly disagree with the majority of Bush's policies and think he was misguided at the least, I believe he felt he was doing the right thing. I'm extremely happy that Mr. Obama is now president. But George W. Bush is not the Devil and Barack Obama is not God. They are both men, with the failures of men, who both try to serve their country to the best of their abilities. I wish more people would take note of the graciousness with which they and their wives treated each other at the inauguration. We could all stand to follow their example.

Now that the fog of utopian dreams has lifted and we've seen the Great Obama in action, he has managed to attain one great accomplishment that no one expected...He makes George W Bush look pretty good by comparison.
